October 20, 1999

Herbert Lee Broadwater of Chester died at University Hospital in Baltimore on Thursday, October 20, 1999. He was 73.

Born on October 2, 1926 in Barton, MD, he was the son of the late Harman and Harriet Catherine Bittinger Broadwater. He attended school in Barton and enlisted in the U.S.Navy on June 26, 1944.

His tours of duty included the Naval Recruiting Station in Baltimore; the Naval Telecommunications Center in Bainbridge; the Commander Service Force 7th Fleet; Motor Torpedo Boat 20; and the USS Orestes. He received the Pacific Theater (1 star), American Theater and Phillipine Liberation (1 star) ribbons and the Victory Medal. Mr. Broadwater was honorably discharged on February 18, 1946.

He married Doris Frances Dawson on September 29, 1946. They moved to Baltimore where Mr. Broadwater finished his education under the GI Bill. He began working for Barry’s Auto Garage in Baltimore and then moved to Glen Burnie in 1950. He worked for Ewell Motors in Glen Burnie until 1955. Mr. Broadwater then operated Herb’s One Stop until 1957. After being self-employed for 18 months in Severn, he closed the shop and began working for Subway Garage in Odenton in 1958. After twenty years, Mr. Broadwater purchased the business in 1978 as the sole owner/operator. He retired in 1991 due to health problems.

Mr. Broadwater and his wife moved to Chester in 1992. Mr. Broadwater was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church, American Legion #276 and V.F.W. #160. He was also a scout leader for 15 years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Broadwater is survived by two sons: Wayne Randall Broadwater of Hernden, VA and Stephen Lee Broadwater of Severna Park; two daughters: Helen Leslie Lotter of Hollywood, FL and Marcelene Sue Patton of Ohio; four brothers: Howard Broadwater and Grover Broadwater, both of Lavale, Edward Broadwater of Corriganville, and Robert Broadwater of Lonaconing; six sisters: Della Beeamon of Carlie, PA, Tressa Broadwater of Barton, Myrtle Broadwater of York, PA, Rosella Yoder of Springs, PA Lillie Broadwater of Westernport, and Thelma Ikes of Summerset, PA; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Broadwater is predeceased by five sisters: Minnie Broadwater, Dorothy Sutherland, Flossie Beeamon, Nellie Llewyne, and Edith Long.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 25, 1999 at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester. Family and friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester. Burial will be in Stevensville cemetery.

October 19, 1999

Joseph Libersky of Chestertown, Md. died on October 19, 1999 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital. He was 84.

He was born in Manhattan in New York City on December 16, 1914, the son of the late Antonin and Barbara Ohlidah Libersky. Mr. Libersky lived in Queens where he graduated from Newtown High School in 1928, He then studied art at New York University. He married Bertha “Kitty” Synek. They lived in New York where Mr. Libersky worked as a lithographer for 34 years, all the while he continued to study art. He retired in 1954 and together they built their home in Double Creek near Chestertown. Mr. Libersky began farming and continued in this capacity until his retirement in 1970. He enjoyed folk dancing, photography, and art. He was a member of the Czch. Society of America.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters: Marie Libersky of Henderson, Md. and Joanne Libersky-Vansant of Chestertown, Md.

Charles Vernon “Chuck” Stevens former Mayor of Rock Hall, Md. died on October 19, 1999 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital. He was 61.

He was born in Baltimore, Md. on June 21, 1938 the son of the late Edgar Leroy Stevens and Carmella Stevens of Tampa, Florida. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at a young age and served from 1955 until 1959 when he was honorably discharged.

Mr. Stevens moved to Rock Hall in 1988. He worked as a law enforcement officer for the town of Rock Hall from 1989 until 1994. He served as Mayor of the town of Rock Hall from 1994 until 1998. He enjoyed collecting.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Margaret L. Mills of Rock Hall, Md. along with 3 sisters: Patricia C. Tawney of Tampa, Florida, Barbara C. Conville of Columbia, Md., and Janet E. Stevens of Conifer, Colorado.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday October 23, 1999 at 1:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Route 20 Rock Hall, Md. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family is asking donations be sent to the Building Fund of Rock Hall Fire Department P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

October 18, 1999

Ethel Marie Cotton of Chester, MD. died October 18, 1999 at her home in Chester, MD. She was 35.

Born on June 6, 1964 in Baltimore, MD. the daughter of Richard Melvin Sauers, Sr. and the late Mary Annie Johnson. She attend school in Glen Burine, MD. She married Norman Cotton on June 29th 1991 and moved to Chester, MD. where she was a homemaker and a seasonal employee of the Mount Hope Farm of Prospect Bay in Grasonville, MD. She was a member of the women of the Moose Chapter 1696 Queenstown, MD. & the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post #40.

She is survived by her husband Norman Cotton of Chester, MD; her father, Richard M. Sauers, Sr. and step mother, Kathleen Marie Sauers, both of Grasonville, MD; two sons: William Sauers of Stevensville, MD and Robert Sauers of Chester, MD; one step-daughter, Denise Cotton of Baltimore, MD; two brothers: Richard M. Sauers, Jr. of Glen Burine, MD. and Albert F., Sauers, Sr. of PA; three sisters: Rose Marie Pleasant of Baltimore, MD, Mary Annie Carper and Donna Heffner, both of Brooklyn, MD; one step-sister, Dawn Gant of Grasonville, MD; one granddaughter, Carissa Em Sauers and one step- granddaughter, Lynetta Cotton.

Funeral Services will be held 11AM on Thursday October 21, 1999 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD, where family and friends may call on Tuesday, October 19,1999 from 7 to 9 PM and Wednesday, October 20, 1999 from 3 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Interment will be in Cedar Hill cemetery in Baltimore, MD.

Ivan Leon Stubbs formerly of Church Hill, Md. died on October 18, 1999 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital. He was 74.

He was born in Starkeys Corner in Queen Anne’s County on June 9, 1925; the son of the late Thomas and Ruby Voshell Stubbs. Mr. Stubbs graduated from Church Hill High School class of 1942 and worked on the family farm. In 1952 he married Anne Churay of Massey, Md. they lived in Church Hill and continued to operate the family farm until 1985 when Mr. Stubbs retired. His wife of 45 years predeceased him January 30, 1998.

Mr. Stubbs was an avid sportsman, shooting skeet and sporting clays; he was Past State Skeet Shooting Champion. His other interests included bowling, Baseball, and hunting, especially quail, ducks, and geese. He received a Hall of Fame Award in 1998, for his outstanding performance as a Bowler presented by the Greater Eastern Shore Bowling Association. He was a past member of the Church Hill Lions Club.

He is survived by a sister: Frances Stubbs Conley of Centreville, Md. a half sister: Helen Kirby Hammond of Bishopville, Md. along with several nieces and nephews. A half brother: William Roe predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held on Friday October 22, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call the funeral home one-hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Church Hill cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Eastern Shore Chapter 212 W. Main Street Suite 202 C Salisbury, Md. 21801.

October 15, 1999

Amanda Lee McGinnes of Chestertown, Md. died October 15, 1999 at her home. She was 71.

She was born in Roberts Station near Church Hill, Md. on Feb. 7, 1928, the daughter of the late Medford and Louise Altvater Coursey. Mrs. McGinnes graduated from Church Hill High School and attended Goldey Beacom Business College. She married Ralph W. McGinnes in 1946; they made their home near Church Hill, Md. Mrs. McGinnes worked for Queen Anne’s County as a secretary for Trial Magistrate and Planning and Zoning. In 1965, she and her husband moved to Deep Landing near Chestertown and in 1983 she retired from Queen Anne’s County employment.

Mrs. McGinnes was a devoted member of Chestertown Baptist Church, attending nearly 20 years. She also enjoyed knitting, reading, and attending church.

In addition to her husband of 53 years she is survived by a son: Mac McGinnes of Church Hill, Md., 2 grandchildren: Anne Louise McGinnes of Rock Hall, Md. and Rebecca “Cissy” McGinnes of Church Hill, Md., along with a dear friend: Angie Jones of Chestertown, Md.

Funeral services will be held on Monday October 18, 1999 at 11:00 A.M. at Chestertown Baptist Church. Relatives and friends may call at the church one-hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Crumpton cemetery. Those serving as pallbearers are Billy, Bobby, Jerry, Craig, Jeff, Abe, and Andrew McGinnes along with Sean Wilson. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to: Hospice of Queen Anne’s County 300 Del Rhodes Ave. Queenstown, Md. 21658.

October 14, 1999

Thomas Elson of Stevensville died at his home on Thursday, October 14, 1999. He was 77.

Born in Anne Arundel County in Maryland on June 30, 1922, he was the son of the late Frank and Irene Potts Elson. He was married to Beatrice C. Elson, who predeceased him January 6, 1997.

Mr. Elson was a member of the Masonic Order of Patapsco Blue Lodge and the Boumi Temple Shrine.

Mr. Elson is survived by his sister, Evelyn Elson of Baltimore, MD and one niece.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 21, 1999 at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie, MD.

Lucile Dorothy Ahrens of Chester, MD. died on October 14, 1999 at the Colonial Manor home in Catonsville, MD. She was 89.

Born on May 3, 1910 in Baltimore, MD. the daughter of the late Frederick Phillip and Lucille Trussell Miller Schuler. She was a graduate of Western High Scholl Class of 1928. On July 2, 1930 she married Gilbert Bannister of Hickory, MD. He predeceased her in October of 1963. In 1965 she married Raymond Weyrauch who later predeceased her in 1973. She worked as a sales clerk at Hutzlers Department Store and Hochschild Kohn Department Store in Baltimore, MD. She later worked as a clerk typist for Publicker Industries of Baltimore, MD. She retired in 1973. She married Courtice Donald Ahrens of Cherry Hill, N.J. on April 14, 1979 and moved to Chester, MD. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, MD.

She is survived by her husband Courtice Donald Ahrens of Chester, MD. one (1) son Donald Schuler Bannister of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Two (2) step-sons C. Donald Ahrens of Modesto, CA and William Garner Ahrens of Cherry Hill, N.J. one (1) daughter Phyllis Abendschoen of Catonsville, MD. (9) Nine grandchildren and (9) nine great grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be held 11AM November 20th, 1999 at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, MD. inurnment will be private. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Episcopal Church c/o Building Fund, P.O. Box 92, Stevensville, MD. 21666, or American Cancer Society, Queen Anne’s County Chapter, P.O. Box 132, Queenstown, MD. 21658 or American Heart Association, Queen Anne’s County, Chapter 300 Hope Road, Centreville, MD. 21617

October 12, 1999

Maria Johanna Lednum of Tilghman died at her home on Tuesday, October 12, 1999. She was 72.

Born in Poland, September 29, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine Bronislawa Gagorowska. She came to the United States in 1948 where she married W. Wendell Lednum, a Talbot County waterman, in Tilghman in October of 1948. Following her husband's death in 1984, she worked as a housekeeper for several Talbot County families. She was a member of the Tilghman United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Lednum is survived by a son, J. Wendell Lednum of Tilghman; three daughters, Patricia E. Hughes and Marjorie L. Reed, both of St. Michaels and Mary Jo Gaultney of Cordova; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 15, 1999 at 11:00 AM at the Tilghman United Methodist Church, Tilghman where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Tilghman United Methodist Church, Tilghman, MD 21671.

October 11, 1999

Joseph John Rauseo of Chester died at his home on Monday, October 11, 1999.He was 37.

Born on April 14, 1962 in Denver, CO he was the son of Nicholas Peter and Eva Louise King Rauseo of Annapolis.He attended Annapolis High School and was a graduate of the Washington Area United Brotherhood of Carpenters Apprenticeship School.He worked as a carpenter foreman for Giant Construction, Inc.Mr. Rauseo married Bettie Jo Rafter on January 3, 1983 and resided in Chester.

Mr. Rauseo was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society. He was also an active member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America Local 132.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Rauseo is survived by two daughters: Cieanna Marie Rauseo and Joleen Louise Rauseo, both of Chester; one brother, Steven Nicholas Rauseo, of West Chicago, IL; two sisters: Diane Marie Rauseo of Alexandria, VA and Theresa Rauseo Burtis of Randallstown; and his grandfather, Jennings J. King of Cheyenne, WY.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, October 15, 1999 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM on Thursday.
