January 17, 2001

Edith Helfrich Bittorf of St. Michael’s died on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at her home. She was 81.

Born in Baltimore on January 3, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Edith Benson Helfrich. She graduated from Catonsville High School in the class of 1938. On July 22, 1940, she married Henry Bittorf of Baltimore. She raised her family in the Gilford area of Baltimore until1965, when they moved to Chester.

She and her husband were housing developers and automobile dealers on the upper Eastern Shore. Mrs. Bittorf was a past active member of Kent Island United Methodist Church, and a present member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church of St. Michael’s. She will be remembered for her painting, carving, and ceramics.

Mrs. Bittorf is survived by two sons, William H. Bittorf of Daytona Beach, FL and James Bittorf of St. Michael’s; six grandchildren, Michelle Bittorf of Daytona Beach, FL, William Bittorf of Tallahassee, FL, Robert Stanfield of Roberta, GA, Edith Huber of Griffin, GA, Jennifer Bittorf and James Bittorf, both of St. Michael’s; and three great grandchildren, Robert Stanfield Jr. and Austin Stanfield of Roberta, GA, and Megan Huber of Griffin, GA. A daughter, Edith Stanfield, predeceased her in 1984.

Services will be held at the Kent Island United Methodist Church, Chester, on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Family and friends may call at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chester on Friday, January 19, 2001 from 3 pm till 5 pm and 7 pm till 9 pm. Entombment will be private.

Clara Odell Bridges of Preston, died at her home on Wednesday, January 17, 2001. She was 81.

Born in Rogersville Tennessee, on June 3, 1919 she was the daughter of the late Enoch E. and Bell Daugherty Hunley. After graduating from Surgeonsville High School in Surgeonsvlle, Tennessee, she made her home in various places.

In 1943 she married Floyd W. Bridges and in 1945 they moved to Talbot County, then to Preston in 1969. Mr. Bridges died in February 1979. She was a member of Women of the Moose #1250, Easton. Mrs. Bridges is survived by; numerous nieces, nephews and very dear friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home Easton, on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00PM. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Friday evening from 7-9PM. Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Preston Volunteer Fire Dept. Ambulance Fund, Preston, Md. 21655.

A Funeral Liturgy for James Leo Gannon, Jr., of Easton, will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton, on Wednesday, January 17th, at 10 A. M. Mr. Gannon died at The Memorial Hospital at Easton on Saturday, January 13, 2001. He was 78.

Born near Cordova, April 22, 1922, he was one of thirteen children of the late James Leo, Sr. and Ethel Rhodes Gannon. After graduating from Easton High School in 1941, he was employed by The Preston Motor Company in Preston. In December of 1942, he was drafted into the U. S. Army and he served in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II.

Following his release from active duty in 1945, he returned to the Preston Motor Company where he worked in sales and accounting until 1975. He then farmed in the Cordova area until retiring in 1994. He was also a corporate officer in Gannon's Refrigeration from 1981 until his death.

A resident of Preston until moving to Easton in 1973, he was a member of Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Easton, Talbot Farm Bureau, Talbot Post #70, American Legion and a former member of the Preston Lions Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing bridge and attending any activities that his grandchildren were involved in including ball games, concerts and plays. His wife, the former Eloise Wood whom he married on January 17, 1953 in Centreville, died on March 3, 1992.

Mr. Gannon is survived by two daughters, Ann G. Siegfried of Crofton and Maria G. Nimmo of Cordova; two sons, James L. Gannon III of Cordova and Patrick R. Gannon of Easton; ten brothers and sisters, Anna Mae Rash, Franklin Gannon, Robert Gannon and Mary Jo Jump, all of Easton, Clara Herzog of Lutherville, Marie Dudley of Wye Mills, Regina Russ of Cordova, Holton Gannon and Edwin Gannon, both of Church Hill and Vincent Gannon of Cambridge and nine grandchildren. Two brothers, Eugene Gannon and William Gannon, are deceased.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, on Tuesday, Jan. 16th, from 7 - P.M. Memorial donations may be made to the National Marfan Foundation, 382 Main St., Port Washington, N.Y. 1 1050.

January 16, 2001

Katherine Anthony Clements of Chestertown, Md. died Tuesday January 16, 2001 at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md. She was 84.

Katherine A. Clements was born April 1, 1916 in Kingstown, Md. the daughter of the late E.Rumsey and Rebecca Anthony "Rigley". In 1950 she and her family moved to Puerto Rico for a period of time and then returned to Chestertown in 1967. Throughout her life Mrs. Clements was known for her many hours spent volunteering her time to several organizations across Kent and Queen Anne's County. This time was donated to the Kent Hospice, where in 1998 she received " Volunteer of the year"

. She was involved for many, many years in the Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital Auxillary where she held the office of president as well as several other offices. She was a part of the Washington College Womens League since its inception in 1951, the Kent Conservation, the American Heart Association, and the Kent Museum. She was also a member of the Chester River Yacht and Country Club and the 1st United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, collecting antiques and refinishing furniture from time to time.

Mrs. Clements is survived by her husband Alday M. Clements of Chestertown, Md., two sons, Anthony M. Clements of Reisterstown, Md. and Christopher B. Clements of Buena Vista, Co., one daughter, Kittemeria Laroux Runde of Chestertown, Md., two brothers, Louis B. Anthony of Chestertown, Md. and Richard Anthony of Fairlee, Md., one sister, Patricia A. Blake of Towson, Md., seven grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday January 20, 2001 at 11:00 am at the 1st United Methodist Church in Chestertown, Md. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be private to the family.

Neva Katherine Conrad, of Easton, died at Genesis Elder Care-The Pines, Easton, on Tuesday, January 16, 2001. She was 87.

Born in Trappe, MD, September 10, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Howard B. and Clara E. Salisbury Streets. After graduating from Trappe High School, she was employed by Wrightson Cannery. On January 1, 1936 she married Algie T. Conrad and they made their home in Easton where she worked as a telephone operator at Memorial Hospital.

In 1945 she became an operator for C & P Telephone Company, where she worked for thirty years, until her retirement in 1975. Mr Conrad died in1963. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Easton where she was a former choir member.

Mrs. Conrad is survived by a daughter, Beatrice E. Conrad of Easton. She is predeceased by two brothers, Edward E. Streets, who died March 21, 1942 during WWII on Malta while serving with the Royal Air Force of Great Britain, for whom the E.E.Streets VFW Post 5118 in Easton was named and Willis Streets who died July 1986, also a sister, Margaret Streets O'Brochta, who died in November 1999.

Graveside services will be held at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton, on Monday January 22, 2001 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimers Association Eastern Shore Chapter, P.O. Box 2233, Salisbury, MD 21801 or to the Grace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 111 Brookletts Ave., Easton, MD 21601.

Catherine Virginia Hoover of Easton died at William Hill Manor Health Care Center on Tuesday, January 16, 2001. She was 90.

Born July 6, 1910 in Baltimore City, she was the daughter of the late Elijah B. and Marie Weber Hoover. She attended schools in Baltimore City and then moved to Severna Park in the 1950's. She worked as a clerk for the C & P Telephone Company. In 1979 she moved to Easton. She was a member of Gleaner Chapter #49 Order of the Eastern Star, Baltimore City. She was also a member of the Easton Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Hoover is survived by a brother, Elijah W. "Budd" Hoover of Easton, MD; one niece, Phyllis McClintock of Stevensville, MD; three nephews, Floyd F. Booth of New Windsor, MD, Louis Hoover and Gary Hoover, both of Baltimore, MD. She was predeceased by a dear friend, Martha MacDonald, who died December 1992.

Graveside services will be Monday, January 22, 2001 at 1:00 PM at the Lorraine Park cemetery, Security Boulevard, Baltimore, MD.

Marian Sherman Lewis of Centreville, formerly of Towson, MD died at the Corsica Hills Nursing Home on Tuesday, January 16, 2001. She was 98.

Born December 4, 1902 in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret Gordy Sherman. Her husband, Henry A. Lewis died January 21, 1988. Mrs. Lewis is survived by two daughters, Margaret E. Lawrence of Silver Run, MD and Teresa S. Lawrence of Parkville, MD; a son, John S. O’Brien of Centreville, MD; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Woodlawn cemetery, Baltimore, MD at 1:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to St. Martin’s Home for the Aged/Little Sisters of the Poor, 601 Maiden Choice Lane, Baltimore, MD 21228.

January 15, 2001

Marion Charles Ewing of Chestertown, MD, died on Monday, January 15, 2001 at Corsica Hills Nursing home, Centreville, MD. He was 84 years old.

Mr. Ewing was born December 28, 1916 in Centreville, Maryland. He was the son of the late Lawrence Sr. & Bertie Draper Ewing. Mr. Ewing was a manager of Warsaw Manor Farms in Cecilton, MD for 4 years and then he and his wife owned and operated a dairy and grain farm for 45 years. He enjoyed all sorts of hunting, crabbing in his later years. His devotion was his rabbit beagles. Mr. Ewing was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Chestertown, MD, Farm Bureau, a member of Chesapeake Beagle Club and The Delaware Beagle Club.

Mr. Ewing was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Marion Ewing, who died on December 13, 1964. He is survived by his wife Ruth Eloise Ewing of 60 years; a son Donnie Ewing and his wife Toni of Galena, MD, 2 daughters; Joyce Shaver of Huntington, WV and Beth Sampson and her husband Roger of Felton, DE; 2 sisters; Gertrude Richardson of Clayton, DE and Virginia Lee Fleming of Denton, MD and one brother, Lawrence Ewing, Jr. of Easton, MD, 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Chestertown, MD. Friends and relatives may call from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland. Interment will be in Chester cemetery, Chestertown, MD Memorial

Benita Spry Hyland of Worton died at her home on Monday, January 15, 2001. She was 58.

Born in Chestertown, MD on October 20, 1942, she was the daughter of John B., Jr. and June Maslin Spry of Chestertown. She was a 1960 graduate of Chestertown High School and worked in local retail stores. On August 10, 1975 she married William Edward Hyland, Sr.

In 1977 they moved to New York and later in 1987 moved back to the area where she owned and operated an antique store, "Classy Closet" in Chestertown and later the "Cobweb" in Rock Hall where she worked until the time of her retirement in 1998 due to her health. She was a member of the Rock Hall Church of God, the Chestertown Ladies of the Elks and the Rock Hall American Legion Aux.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hyland is survived by four sons; Richard Newsome, Jr., Gregory Todd Newsome both of Worton, William Edward Hyland, Jr. of Tampa, FL and Michael Scott Hyland of Worton; a daughter, Debra Legg of Still Pond; two brothers, Robert Spry of Fredericksburg, VA and John Spry, III of Chestertown; two sisters, Linda Miller of Dover, DE and Mary Beals of Chestertown, and two grandchildren, Morgan Legg and Spencer Legg, both of Still Pond.

Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown on Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 7:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Kent Hospice Foundation, 103 Dixon Dr., Chestertown, MD 21620.

George L. Klingman of Millington, Md. Died Monday January 15th. 2001 in the Corscia Hills Nursing Home, Centreville, Md. of heart failure. He was 81.

Mr. Klingman was born in Cleveland Ohio, the son of the late Louis and Mam ie Brown Klingman. Mr. Klingman worked for the Chrysler Corp. in Newark De. On there production line, retiring in 1986. Mr. Klingman was a WWII Veteran, and a member of the VFW Post in Hinckley, Ohio.

In his spare time and retirement he enjoyed woodworking and could be found throughout upper Kent and Queen Anne's counties collecting Aluminum cans from neighbors and friends.

Mr. Klingman is survived by his wife of 56yrs. Margaret E. Klingman, 1- daughter, Lanora J. Wilhelm of Westminster, Md. and 1- son Elliot L. Klingman of Chester, Md. 6- Grandchildren and 2- Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday January 18th, 2001 at 2pm from the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. where friends and family may call Wednesday evening from 7-9pm. Interment will be in the Sudlersville cemetery, Sudlersville, Md.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 1358 Parsons Rd. Salisbury, Md. 21801
