Mr. Raymond Young Sr.
Dated: Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mr. Raymond E. Young Sr., 75, of 4227 Chestnut Grove Road, Keedysville, died Friday, May 24, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

He was the husband of Juanita Mae McCoy Young, his wife of 54 years.

Born Jan. 14, 1927, near Lincoln, Neb., he was a son of the late James Cicero and Effie Rebecca Spencer Young.

He had attended Boonsboro High School.

He was formerly employed with the painters' union and retired from Ironworker's Local 568 in Cumberland.

He was a member of Antietam Lodge 197 A.F. and A.M. in Keedysville, and Tall Cedars in Hagerstown.

He had played in the Independent Baseball League for many years and was active in youth baseball.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Donna Kay Farrie and Melissa Ann Swartz, both of Mount Briar; two sons, Raymond E. Young Jr. of Mount Briar and Randy Allen Young of Louisiana; two sisters, Deloris Flook of Middletown, and Bonita Shank of Boonsboro; one brother, Dean R. Young of Boonsboro; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Bibb; and three brothers, Willie Lee Young, James C. Young Jr. and Arnold S. Young.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the funeral home. The Rev. Jan Wade will officiate.

Interment will be in Boonsboro cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sharpsburg Area Emergency Medical Services, P.O. Box 307, Sharpsburg, Md. 21782, or to Parkinson's disease research.

Mr. Stephen Toop
Dated: Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mr. Stephen Edward Toop, 40, of New Windsor, died Sunday, May 26, at University of Maryland Shock Trauma from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.

The accident occurred near New Windsor as he was returning from the Rolling Thunder Rally in Washington.

He was the husband of Andrea Bell Toop, his wife of 15 years.

Born Jan. 23, 1962, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late William Edward and Elizabeth Ann Toop.

He was a 1980 graduate of Westminster High School.

He was a truck driver for Hahn Transportation, Union Bridge.

He attended Union Street United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed drag racing and riding his motorcycle.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Kellen Edward Toop of New Windsor; a sister, Valerie Fisher and husband Troy of York, Pa.; a brother, William Scott Toop and wife Marni of Westminster; his father-in-law, Robert Bell Sr. of Baltimore; a niece; three nephews; and many cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Howard Hinson and the Rev. Joan Carter Rimbach officiating.

Interment will be in Westminster cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kellen E. Toop Trust Fund, 2600 Old New Windsor Road, New Windsor, Md. 21776.

Mrs. Shirley Grossnickle
Dated: Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mrs. Shirley Louise Grossnickle, 61, of 22329 Cave Hill Road, Smithsburg, died Saturday, May 25, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

She was the wife of Harold Morgan Grossnickle. They were married 43 years.

Born April 26, 1941, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Bernard and Ruth Valentine Sines Funk.

She was employed by the Washington County Board of Education for more than 25 years.

She was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ.

She was a volunteer with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Crystal L. Ancarrow of Smithsburg, Kathy L. Keeney of Clear Spring, and Kimberly A. Lancaster of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Keith W. Grossnickle of Waynesboro, Pa.; three sisters, Evelyn Martin of El Paso, Texas, Martha Goldthorpe of Mayflower, Ariz., and Treen Null of Catonsville; three brothers, John Kline of Frederick, and Bernard Funk and Boyd Funk, both of Myersville; numerous nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald Conley and the Rev. Richard Daughtridge officiating.

Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742, or to National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, 500 N.E. Spanish River Blvd., Suite 14, Boca Raton, Fla. 33431.

Mrs. Willa Cotterman
Dated: Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mrs. Willa Sanders Cotterman, 85, of Westminster, formerly of Damascus, died Monday, May 27, at Westminster Nursing Home.

She was the wife of the late Harold F. Cotterman Jr.

Born March 24, 1917, in Washington, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Elsie Bowles Sanders.

She was a former treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department and the Women's Democratic Club, and was a former member of Damascus United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Ross of Berlin; one son, Harold F. Cotterman III of Westminster; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Neil S. Cotterman in 2001.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30.

Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Mount Airy.

Arrangements are by Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus.

Mr. Charles Shawver
Dated: Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mr. Charles E. Shawver, 88, of Gaithersburg, died Friday, May 24, at Wilson Health Care Center, Gaithersburg.

He was the husband of the late Elizabeth H. Shawver.

Born Jan. 12, 1914, in Tazewell, Va., he was a son of the late Charles S. and Vannie Leffel Shawver.

Mr. Shawver had attended Poolesville School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the 29th Division. He landed in Normandy on D-Day. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Mr. Shawver retired from Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel after 32 years of service as the chief of the guard force.

He was a former member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg.

He enjoyed working in his vegetable and flower gardens. He was a Redskins fan.

Mr. Shawver is survived by three children, Doug Shawver and wife Nellie of Tampa, Fla., and formerly of Germantown, David L. Shawver and wife Dianne of Mount Airy, and Deborah Shawver Arnold and husband Daniel of Marietta, Ga., and formerly of Gaithersburg; six grandchildren, Tammy Shawver of Frederick, Jennifer Ambrose of Gaithersburg, Kevin Shawver of Jenkintown, Pa., Josh Newton of Mount Airy, Brandon Arnold and Devin Arnold, both of Marietta; and nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the funeral home where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Interment will be in Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville.

Mr. Donald Weaver
Dated: Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mr. Donald C. Weaver, 81, of Monrovia, died Friday, May 24, at Montgomery Hospice Casey House, Rockville.

He was the husband of Mildred E. Weaver.

He was born in Altoona, Pa.

He served in the U.S. Army during the European Theater of World War II, receiving rank of staff sergeant.

He attended George Washington University, Washington, after returning from World War II.

He was employed by the federal government as an executive officer.

He was an Eagle Scout troop leader for Boys Scouts of America in Purcellville, Va. He was a Sea Scout on Silver Star ship.

He was a former member of Sons of the American Revolution.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Janet C. Spessert of Ijamsville, and Sharon M. Celeste of Frederick; four grandchildren, Jason D. Spessert and wife Julie, Heather C. Spessert, Sean D. Sadtler and wife Jennifer, and Nicole M. Wassell; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Michael Spessert and Veronica Leigh Sadtler; and a sister, Janet L. Warsing of Hollidaysburg, Pa.

He was preceded in death by a brother, the late Rev. J. Benner Weaver.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville.

Inurnment will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, Md. 21701 or to Montgomery Hospice Casey House, 6001 Muncaster Mill Road, Rockville, Md. 20855.

Mr. James Wood
Dated: Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mr. James Alan Wood, 39, of 93 Andy Drive, Bumpass, Va., and formerly of Edgemere, died Friday, May 24, in Rockwall, Texas.

He was the husband of Karen L. Wood, formerly of Frederick.

Born July 16, 1962, in Baltimore, he was the son of Percy J. and Bertha Wood of Bumpass of Port Deposit.

He was a truck driver.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Krista L. Williams; and a sister, Linda Yancosky.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home of Dundalk, 7922 Wise Ave.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at the funeral home with Pastor Timothy Rush officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. in Brownsville Heights, Brownsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Edgemere Free Methodist Church, 2512 Brannan Ave., Baltimore, Md. 21219.

Mrs. Phyllis Flook
Dated: Wednesday, May 29, 2002.
Mrs. Phyllis Myers Flook, 69, of 7929 Edgewood Farm Road, Frederick, died Monday, May 27, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, Frederick.

She was the wife of Howard O. Flook Jr., whom she married Dec. 28, 1986.

Born Dec. 31, 1932, in Hagerstown, she was a daughter of the late Howard David and Naomi Catherine Bloyer Myers.

Mrs. Flook was previously married to Dr. Robert J. Thomas.

She was a 1950 graduate of Hagerstown High School, received her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, and her master's degree from Hood College.

Mrs. Flook was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

She spoke three languages, loved to travel, and was an avid tennis player. She was a volunteer with many civic and service organizations and was an educator for most of her life.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Cindy T. Whaling and husband Alex of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Cathy T. Spencer and husband Mark of Frederick; three stepchildren, Howard O. Flook III of Flagstaff, Ariz., Mark A. Flook of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Mollie F. Richardson of Houston; and six grandchildren, Forrest, Catherine, Rob and Austin Whaling, and Justin and Allison Spencer.

Mrs. Flook will also be remembered by Judy Lowe of Rockville.

There will be no calling at the funeral home.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, with the Rev. James R. Seale, rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, Frederick, officiating.

Interment will be private in All Saints Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to H.F.C. Kline House, c/o Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, Md. 21705.
