Dr. Vaman Waravdekar
Dated: Wednesday, February 6, 2002.
Dr. Vaman S. Waravdekar, 87, of Ijamsville, died Tuesday Feb. 5, at his home from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

He was the husband of Mazie Frances Duke Waravdekar, whom he married May 7, 1960.

Born May 11, 1914, in Varavda, India, he was a son of Shivram B. and Hirabai Kanvinde Waravdekar.

Dr. Waravdekar immigrated to the United States from India and became a citizen in 1958.

He was a Hindu.

He was a biochemist specializing in cancer research. He was educated at St. Xavier College in Bombay, India, where he received doctoral degrees in pharmacology and chemistry. His initial work was done in India.

In 1948, he taught and did research at Georgetown University. In 1952, he was the first visiting scientist to be invited to conduct research at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health where he made contributions to the developing fields of biochemistry and cancer research.

He was the first chairman and professor of biochemistry at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, in 1957. He became the chief of biochemistry at the Armed Forces Institutes of Pathology in 1958. In 1966, he joined Microbiological Associates.

Dr. Waravdekar returned to NIH and the National Cancer Institute in 1974, where he worked in grant research until his retirement in 1982. After retirement, Dr. Waravdekar formed BioPharma Research and did consulting work until the time of his death.

During his career he published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He was a Life Member Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences for outstanding work in the advancement of Science. He was a 52-year member of the American Association of Cancer Research. He was also a member of the Federation of American Society for Experimental Biology in addition to numerous other societies.

He was a member of the Historical Society of Frederick County for over 30 years.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles, the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins. He enjoyed gardening and spending time at Deep Creek Lake.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Dr. Neil V. Waravdekar and wife Anita of Frederick, and Jay V. Waravdekar and wife Michelle of Gloucester, Va.; five grandchildren, Drew N. Waravdekar, Rebecca A. Waravdekar, Cristina A. Waravdekar and Nicolas N. Waravdekar, all of Frederick, and Blake J. Waravdekar of Gloucester; one brother, Dr. Mukund S. Waravdekar of Bombay; one sister, Dr. Sushiela R. Pai of Bombay; and many nephews and nieces.

Dr. Waravdekar was preceded in death by six siblings.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Memorial services are planned for the near future.

Internment will be private.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made as memorial contributions to The Chest Foundation, c/o American College of Chest Physicians, 3300 Dundee Road, Northbrook, Ill. 60062.

Mr. Ray Miller
Dated: Wednesday, February 6, 2002.
Mr. Ray Guy Miller, 44, of 16903 Sabillasville Road. Sabillasville, died Tuesday Feb. 5, at his home, following a long illness.

He was the husband of Kimberly Marie Stambaugh Miller, whom he married Feb. 13, 1983.

Born April 14, 1957, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was a son of Virginia Green Miller of Thurmont, and the late James R. Miller.

Mr. Miller was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Sabillasville.

He had worked for his father at Miller's Lumber Co. He was a mechanic, and for the past eight years he owned and operated Miller's Repair in Thurmont.

He was a member of the Blue Ridge Sportsman's Club, and the South Mountain Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of AMVETS Post 7 bowling team, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are three children, Jamie Rae Miller, Megan Marie Miller and Cory Mathew Miller, all at home; one brother, James E. Miller Sr. and wife Bonnie of Sabillasville; two sisters, Arleen M. Donnelly and husband Bruce of Thurmont, and Jill D. Miller of Emmitsburg; his father- and mother-in-law, Lyman and Betty Lou Stambaugh of Thurmont; his brother- and sister-in-law, Chuck and Carol Stambaugh of Sabillasville; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home, with Mr. Miller's pastor, the Rev. Janet Comings, officiating.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, near Frederick.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, Md. 21702; or to St. John's United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 137 Sabillasville, Md. 21780.

Ms. Betty Jackson
Dated: Wednesday, February 6, 2002.
Ms. Betty Jane Jackson, 74, formerly of New Windsor, died Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center, Emmitsburg, after a long illness.

Born Feb. 19, 1927, in Carroll County, she was a daughter of the late John Herbert and Olivia Beatrice Budd Jackson.

Ms. Jackson was a 1946 graduate of Robert Moten High School, Westminster.

She was a member of Strawbridge United Methodist Church, New Windsor.

Ms. Jackson was employed at the Brethren Service Center, New Windsor, for a number of years, retiring in 1986. She became a resident of St. Catherine's in 1998.

Surviving are one daughter, Robyn R. Duppins and husband Leon Jr. of Fairfield, Pa.; one son, Randy J. Brown and wife Michele of New Oxford, Pa.; three grandchildren, Trey R. Brown, Kobe J. Brown and Chelsea Brown; and one brother, John Gary Jackson of Westminster.

Ms. Jackson was preceded in death by three sisters, Matilda Brightful, Frances Talbot and Virgie Hill.

There will be no public visitation.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Strawbridge United Methodist Church, with Ms. Jackson's pastor, the Rev. Gertie Williams, officiating.

Inurnment will be in St. James cemetery, New Windsor.

Arrangements are by Hartzler Funeral Home, New Windsor.

Mrs. Isabell Hough
Dated: Wednesday, February 6, 2002.
Mrs. Isabell Lee Hough, 91, formerly of Johnsville, died Monday, Feb. 4, at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center, after an illness of one week.

She was the wife of John Edward Bough, who died in 1997.

Born Sept. 27, 1910, in Frederick County, she was daughter of the late Charles Edward and Rachel Lee Warner Lippy.

She was a member of Union Bridge United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Berean Sunday School class and was a former Sunday school teacher.

She was also a member of the Johnsville Senior Citizens.

She was formerly employed at Taneytown Manufacturing Company for 40 years, retiring in 1973.

Mrs. Hough and her late husband were residents of Johnsville for 32 years until 1992 when they moved to Carroll Lutheran Village.

She is survived by one sister, Anna Bair and husband Ralph of Union Bridge; and one niece.

The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, on Thursday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 8, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Barry Taylor, her pastor, and the Rev. Jimmie Schwarz, chaplain of Carroll Lutheran Village, officiating.

Interment will be in Rocky Hill cemetery near Woodsboro.

Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of Union Bridge United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 460, Union Bridge, Md.; or Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, Md. 21158.

Mr. LeRoy Girson
Dated: Monday, July 30, 2001.
Mr. LeRoy Solomon Girson, 74, of Ijamsville, died Friday, July 27, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Connie Lee Girson, his wife of 28 years.

Born May 14, 1927, in Homestead, Pa., he was a son of the late Edward and Ida Seiavitch Girson.

Mr. Girson was the chief executive officer of his business, Theatre Vision, located in Rockville. He was in business for over 20 years. He created and had held the patent on large screen TVs.

Mr. Girson was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was a Redskin fan and a season ticket holder for more than 40 years. He also enjoyed his country living at his home, where he enjoyed his horses and other domesticated animals.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Shelly Sas and husband Andrew, Mark B. Girson, Danny J. Mansker and wife Cindy, and Ken Lee Mansker; three grandchildren, Jonathan Reese, Matthew Reese and Kassy Mansker; and two siblings, Marion Pelzner and Samuel Girson.

Mr. Girson was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Girson; and one sister, Cecilia Goldstein.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, U.S. 15, Frederick, with Rabbi Morris Kosman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 839 Quince Orchard Blvd., Suite E, Gaithersburg, Md. 20878, or to a favorite charity.

Mr. Troy Shelton
Dated: Monday, July 30, 2001.
Mr. Troy Eugene Shelton, 18, of 1817 Hoffmaster Road, Knoxville, died Friday, July 27, in Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 8, 1982, in Baltimore, he was a son of Nora E. Green at home.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his stepfather, Kim Allen Green, at home; one sister, Blaire Shelton, at home; two brothers, Joseph M. Huntzberry and John R. Huntzberry, both at home; and one stepsister, Rachel L. Green of Frederick.

Mr. Shelton will also be remembered by his friends, Megan E. Demory and Jessika M. Keeney, both of Brunswick.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 30, at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, where funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. Pastor Michael Forshee will officiate.

Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family, c/o Jefferson Baptist Church, P.O. Box 413, Jefferson, Md. 21755.

Mrs. Nancy Thomas
Dated: Monday, July 30, 2001.
Mrs. Nancy J. Geistwite Thomas, of Woodbine, died Friday, July 27, at her home.

She was the wife of the late Jack L. Thomas.

Born in Bloomsburg, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Jack and Leatha Bennett Geistwite.

Mrs. Thomas was church secretary for Ashton United Methodist Church. She was a member of Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, Woodbine.

Surviving are two daughters, Gail Thomas of Woodbine, and Sally Thomas of Lexington, Ky.; and one sister, Doloras Mcilvain of Seaford, Del.

Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by a son, Dale Jack Thomas.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, 2601 Jennings Chapel Road, Woodbine.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, or to Ashton United Methodist Building Fund, 17314 New Hampshire Ave., Ashton, Md. 20861.

Arrangements are by Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus.

Mrs. Bessie Kosack
Dated: Monday, July 30, 2001.
Mrs. Bessie E. Kosack, 80, of Charles Town, W.Va., died Friday, July 27, at Shenandoah Health Village Center, Charles Town.

She was the wife of the late Stanley Kosack Sr.

Born June 10, 1921, in Washington, she was a daughter of the late George and Bessie Snow Engle.

Mrs. Kosack was a homemaker.

She was a member of the auxiliary of American Legion 108, Cheverly.

Mrs. Kosack was Protestant.

Surviving are three daughters, Teresa M. Herbst and husband Larry of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Carole Stapleton and husband William of Alexandria, Va., and Linda Ramsburg and husband Bruce of Cheverly; one son, Stanley A. Kosack Jr. of Cheverly; a son-in-law, Douglas Grissom of Erwin, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Kosack was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith A. Grissom, March 27, 1983; three sisters; and one brother.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
