Ms. Rosa Ellen Farlow Apple, 88, of Randleman, N.C., formerly of Rockville, died Thursday, July 26.

Surviving are one son, Joe Kemp Apple and wife Linda of Frederick; three daughters, Mary Ellen Smith and husband Doug of Randleman, Kathryn Apple of Wake Forest, N.C., and Patricia Congdon and husband Skip of Brookeville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville. Please meet at the cemetery gates by 12:45 p.m.

Mrs. Emily Hawkins
Dated: Tuesday, July 31, 2001.
Mrs. Emily Henrietta Hewitt Hawkins, 61, of 405 Braddock Ave., Frederick, died Sunday, July 29, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

She was the former wife of Earl W. Hawkins of Mountaindale.

Born Nov. 11, 1939, in Frederick, she is a daughter of the late Alonzo William and Susie Francis Rice Hewitt.

She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church of Urbana.

She owned and operated Frederick Truck Equipment for more than 30 years.

She was secretary and treasurer of the Western Maryland Chapter of the Motor Truck Association. She was president of the cemetery board of the Mount Prospect Church cemetery.

She enjoyed gardening and collecting antiques.

She is survived by two children, Barbara Laurie Gladhill and husband Michael L. of Woodsboro, and Patrick Paul Hawkins and wife Julee Ann of Frederick; four grandchildren, Angela Marie Gladhill and Cory Michael Gladhill, both of Woodsboro, and Kyle Patrick Hawkins and Kristin Amanda Hawkins, both of Frederick; one brother, Willis Hewitt and wife Rosemary of St. Augustine, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Maetta Hewitt of Frederick.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Morris Hewitt.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 1201 N. Market St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at the funeral home with Pastor Vicki M. Dotterer, Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Urbana, officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Prospect Church cemetery, Little Church on the Hill, Lewistown.

Memorial donations may be made to Mount Prospect Church cemetery Association, in care of the Rev. Warren Rice, 204 Apples Church Road, Thurmont, Md. 21788.

Mr. John Hoffman
Dated: Tuesday, July 31, 2001.
Mr. John Edward "Eddie" Hoffman, 66, formerly of 9321 Liberty Road, Mount Pleasant, a resident of College View Nursing Center since 1994, died Monday, July 30, at the center.

Born April 29, 1935, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Charles Edward and Beulah Main Hoffman.

He is survived by one sister, Bernice M. Haugh of Frederick; and one brother, Donald E. Fogle of Frederick.

There will be no visiting or calling at the funeral home.

Private services and interment will be held at the graveside in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

The family requests flowers be omitted.

Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, Frederick, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Elsie Milstead
Dated: Tuesday, July 31, 2001.
Mrs. Elsie Lillian Springer Milstead, 99, of Tallahassee, Fla., formerly of Frederick, died Friday, June 27, in Tallahassee.

She was an Episcopalian.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Marianne Clark of Edgewater; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Those wishing to attend the service should assemble at the Francis Scott Key Memorial Chapel inside the gates of the cemetery by 1:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, 12502 N. Pine Drive, Tampa, Fla. 33612.

Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, Frederick, is handling the local arrangements.

Mrs. Patricia Bruffy
Dated: Tuesday, July 31, 2001.
Mrs. Patricia A. Bruffy, 57, of Frederick, died Sunday, July 29, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

She was the wife of the late John Bruffy.

Born Dec. 13, 1943, in Whyte County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Esmon and Ruth Phillips Rose.

She is survived by three sons, Charles Barth of Virginia Beach, Va., Robert Barth of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Michael Barth of Hedgesville, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; one brother, the Rev. Arnold Rose of Coeburn, Va.; and two sisters, Janice Trent of Rogersville, Tenn., and Joy Cope of Frederick.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Faye Gray.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Arnold Rose officiating.

Interment will be private.

Infant Cory Shaw
Dated: Tuesday, July 31, 2001.
Infant Cory Grant Shaw died at birth Saturday, July 28, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of James C. and Jacquelyn Stull Shaw of Creagerstown Road, Woodsboro.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Tyler Phillip Shaw, at home; maternal grandparents, Walt Stull of Brunswick, and Catherine Harrant Stull of Frederick; paternal grandparents, Clarence Grant and Margaret Arnold Shaw of Frederick; maternal great-grandmother, Betty Harrant of Frederick; and maternal great-grandfather, Walter Stull of North Carolina.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. The Rev. John Powell will officiate. Those desiring to attend should meet at the cemetery's old chapel at 10:30 a.m.

Arrangements were handled by Stauffer Funeral Home, Walkersville.

Mr. Emmart Preston
Dated: Tuesday, July 31, 2001.
Mr. Emmart H. Preston, 77, of Reisterstown, died Sunday, July 29, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel Air.

He was the husband of Mary C. Preston.

Born Nov. 3, 1923, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Howard and Irene Preston.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was employed with Western Electric in the purchasing department for 44 years.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Richard H. Preston of New Market, Robert E. Preston of Timonium, and William P. Preston of Westminster; one daughter, Mary J. Trivette of Fallston; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charles H. Preston.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 3 to 5 and 5 to 7 p.m. at Eline Funeral Home, Reisterstown.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Sacred Heart Church, Glyndon, with Monsignor Lloyd E. Aiken officiating.

Interment will be Baltimore National cemetery, Baltimore.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 65 Sacred Heart Lane, Glyndon, Md. 21071.

Mr. Elmo Ruby
Dated: Wednesday, August 1, 2001.
Mr. Elmo Shaffer Ruby, 84, formerly of Box Elder Court, Frederick, died Tuesday, July 31, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home.

He was the husband of Mildred Mary Basler Ruby, whom he married in 1939.

Born Oct. 24, 1916, in Hampstead, he was a son of the late George Adam and Emma Shaffer Ruby.

Mr. Ruby was employed as a salesman.

As a young man he played basketball and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Later he enjoyed attending Orioles baseball games and going to see Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts.

All of his life, Mr. Ruby liked gardening and picking fresh fruits and vegetables.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Julie Rose Ruby of Springfield, Va.; one son, Michael E. Ruby of Newcomb; and four grandchildren, Robert V. Goodden of Austin, Texas, Amy L. Goodden of Gainesville, Fla., Roger S. Ruby of Newcomb, and Holly J. Ruby of Cambridge.

Mr. Ruby will also be remembered by his daughter Julie's fiance, Pete Russell of Springfield.

Mr. Ruby was preceded in death by one brother, Wilbert E. Ruby; and one sister, Mary R. Mathias.

Friends may call at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 1201 N. Market St., Frederick, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Westminster.

Mr. Leslie Buhrman Sr.
Dated: Wednesday, August 1, 2001.
Mr. Leslie S. Buhrman Sr., 78, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Foxville, died Thursday, July 19, at his home.

Born Aug. 17, 1922, in Foxville, he was a son of the late Clyde A. and Leacy R. Toms Buhrman.

Mr. Buhrman was a veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant while serving Dec. 30, 1940 to June 16, 1945, with the 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army. He was awarded a Purple Heart as a result of wounds received March 29, 1943, in Tunisia, during the North African campaign.

He was employed 28 years, until his retirement, at Moore Business Forms, Thurmont.

Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Wastler and husband Dennis of Smithsburg; two sons, Leslie S. Buhrman Jr. and wife Joyce of Fairfield, Pa., and Gregory Buhrman Sr. and wife Virginia of Sabillasville; two sisters, Olive G. Bowman of Smithsburg, and Mildred F. Weller of Foxville; one brother, Francis Buhrman of Foxville; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Buhrman was preceded in death by a stepson, Ronald Lee Hershberger; and two brothers, Jesse Buhrman and Roger Buhrman.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, Foxville, with the Rev. Blaine Feightner officiating.

Mr. Steven Murray
Dated: Wednesday, August 1, 2001.
Mr. Steven Elwood Murray, 31, of 15514 National Pike, Clear Spring, died Monday, July 30, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born May 21, 1970, in Hagerstown, he was a son of Willis Lenwood and Glendora Hart Murray of Hagerstown.

Mr. Murray attended Wilson Chapel, Clear Spring.

He was a 1989 graduate of Clear Spring High School and attended the Career Studies Center, Hagerstown.

Mr. Murray was employed as a welder with SFA Inc., Frederick Manufacturing Division, Frederick.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one brother, Jesse Linwood Murray of Hagerstown; several aunts and uncles; and one niece.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring.
