Mr. George James Sr.
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Mr. George F. James Sr., 71, of Sioux City, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 20, at a Sioux City hospital.

He was the husband of Sarah Holloway, whom he married Jan. 2, 1954, in Sioux City.

Born March 16, 1930, in Burkittsville, he was a son of the late Adam and Julia Gross James.

Mr. James entered the U.S. Air Force on Aug. 26, 1947, and remained on active duty until Sept. 1, 1951. He re-enlisted, moved to Sioux City, and remained on active duty until his retirement on Oct. 1, 1967.

During his military service he received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with 4 Bronze Loops, the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 2 bronze oak leaf clusters and the United Nations Service Medal.

Mr. James worked for a brief time at Kidder Knoefler and part-time for a number of years at Kenny's Apco. He worked as a security guard for the Iowa Air National Guard for 24 years, until his retirement in 1993.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Gloria James and Karen James, both of Sioux City, and Debra James-Brown and husband Dexter of Milwaukee, Wis.; one son, George James Jr. and wife Diane of Kenosha, Wis.; two sisters, Manzella Grayson of Washington, and Ruth Judge of Mount Rainier, Wash.; three brothers, Joe L. James of Sioux City, Alfred James of Northern Virginia, and Edward James of Fairfax, Va.; a brother-in-law, Tom Holloway of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, Rachelle James, Heather Givens, Tony James, Aaron James, Tiffany Hodges, Brandon Jones, David James, Daneshia Jones, Troy Brown, Nathan Jones, Dante Pope and Chaunte Pope; two great-grandchildren, Santiea Givens and De Vante James; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. James will also be remembered by his friend, Elizabeth Jones of Sioux City.

Mr. James was preceded in death by one daughter, Evelyn James; one son, Michael James; one granddaughter, La Terra James; two sisters, Mary Lovelace and Ethel James; and one brother, Charles James.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at Nelson-Berger Funeral Home, 822 Jennings St., Sioux City, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Cathedral of the Epiphany, Sioux City, with the Rev. Paul Kelly officiating.

Interment will be in Calvary cemetery, Sioux City.

Mr. Carroll Ausherman Sr.
Dated: Monday, July 23, 2001.
Mr. Carroll Milton Ausherman Sr., 90, formerly of Adamstown Road, more recently a resident of Beverly Health Care of Frederick, died Friday, July 20, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Margaret Elizabeth Sanbower Ausherman, who died March 6, 1999.

Born Nov. 4, 1910, in Monrovia, he was a son of the late Milton Keefer and Daisey Virginia Haller Ausherman.

Mr. Ausherman operated the family farm in Adamstown for many years.

He was a member of Frederick Church of the Brethren, where he served as a deacon. He was a lifetime member of Carroll Manor Volunteer Fire Co.

Surviving are four children, Carroll M. Ausherman Jr. and wife Sally of Frederick, Shirley A. Lippy and husband Paul of Mount Pleasant, Paul David Ausherman of Virginia, and Sara Frederick and husband Paul of Lutherville; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Theodore Ausherman of New Oxford, Pa.; one sister, Madeline Stover of York, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ausherman was preceded in death by one son, Calvin Ausherman in 1991; four brothers, Melvin, Herbert, Chester and Ernie Ausherman; and one sister, Irene Sanbower.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 23, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick. The Rev. Lerry W. Fogle will officiate.

Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Park at Linden Hills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, Md. 21701, or to Carroll Manor Volunteer Co., 2795 Adams St., Adamstown, Md. 21710.

Mr. Russell Klipp Sr.
Dated: Monday, July 23, 2001.
Mr. Russell Conrad Klipp Sr., 83, of Key Avenue, Frederick, died early Sunday, July 22, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Katherine Elizabeth Rothenhoefer Klipp, his wife of 53 years.

Born Oct. 6, 1917, in Frederick County, he was a son of the late John Henry and Catherine Shultz Klipp.

Mr. Klipp worked as a plasterer for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Russell C. Klipp Jr. of Frederick; one stepson, George W. Harris Jr. of Frederick; one brother; four sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation. Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mrs. Pauline Phelps
Dated: Monday, July 23, 2001.
Mrs. Pauline Rebecca Wilhide Phelps, 90, formerly of Bartonsville Road, Frederick, more recently a resident of Beverly Health Care of Frederick, died Saturday, July 21, at the nursing home.

She was the wife of William Daniel Phelps, who died Aug. 21, 1964.

Born May 21, 1911, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Nellie Wilhide.

Mrs. Phelps formerly attended Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and most recently attended Frederick Church of the Nazarene.

She enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Surviving are four children, Doris J. Webb and husband Paul of Charles Town, W.Va., Bernard Phelps of Mount Airy, and William D. Phelps Jr. and wife Sharon, and Jerry Phelps and wife Sherry, all of Frederick; five grandchildren, Joseph and Gregory Ricketts, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Kimberly Phelps of Westminster, and Christopher and Michael Phelps, both of Frederick; and two sisters, Nancy Shaffer of Chambersburg, and Kathleen Mickey of Marion, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the funeral home. The Rev. Richard G. Diffenderfer of Frederick Church of the Nazarene will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mr. Harold Late
Dated: Monday, July 23, 2001.
Mr. Harold Franklin Late, 74, of 507 Gateway Drive, Thurmont, died Saturday, July 21, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Lois J. Stambaugh Late, whom he married in 1953.

Born Nov. 7, 1926, in Rocky Ridge, he was a son of the late Charles Bruce and Nettie V. Krise Late.

Mr. Late farmed for more than 50 years, retiring in 1988. He then worked part-time at Jubilee grocery store, Thurmont, for five years, and at the Thurmont Food Lion for seven years.

He was a life member of Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, Rocky Ridge, and was the church treasurer for 51 years. He also served on the church council many times.

Mr. Late was a member of the Thurmont Grange for many years and was master for three years. He was a member of Rocky Ridge Fire Co. for 32 years and was director at different times. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Dwyane Allen Late and wife Antonia of Thurmont; one daughter, Pamela Sue Late, at home; two grandchildren, Steven D. Late and Jennifer M. Late, both of Thurmont; one stepgranddaughter, Heidi Mandl of Thurmont; one aunt, Ruth Krise of Gettysburg, Pa.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; one brother-in-law, Lyman Stambaugh and wife Betty Lou of Thurmont; and two sisters-in-law, Celia Fraley and husband Carroll, and Doris Warthen and husband Dave, all of Thurmont.

Mr. Late was preceded in death by one brother, Paul B. Late.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the funeral home, with the Rev. James L. Fisher officiating.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Mr. George Chadwick Jr.
Dated: Monday, July 23, 2001.
Mr. George A. "Jay" Chadwick Jr., 89, a resident of Buckinghams Choice, Adamstown, former long-time resident of Boyds, died Friday, July 20.

His first marriage to Eleanor W. Margerum ended in divorce. His second wife was Avaleen Gazaway Seamans Chadwick.

Born Nov. 20, 1911, in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Va., he was a son of the late George A. and Asenath Graves Chadwick.

For many years, Mr. Chadwick's home was at Washington Grove.

He graduated from Gaithersburg High School and St. Albans School. He received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and his bachelor of laws from Georgetown University. He was admitted to the District of Columbia bar in 1936 and to the Maryland bar in 1944.

He conducted the Chadwick Bar Review School from1937 until his entry into the armed forces in 1943. Many of his former students were counted as his lifelong friends.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and held the rank of captain upon his discharge in 1946.

Mr. Chadwick launched a career in the private practice of law in 1937. In 1938 he became associated with the firm of Frost, Myers and Towers. Except for his military service, he continued his affiliation with that firm and its successor, Frost & Towers, until 1968, when he became associated with his son, Charles M. Chadwick, in general practice in Washington and Rockville.

Although a great deal of his practice was concerned with government contracts, he never lost his interest in trial work. During the latter part of his career he represented Sperry Rand Corp. and was general counsel and a director of Southern Oxygen Co. and the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. In 1976, he was inducted into the HBPA's Hall of Fame in Rockingham Park, N.H.

Following his retirement from law, he participated in the organization and operation of Maryland Midland Railway Inc. He was the first president of the company and later served as chairman of the board of directors for a number of years.

He was a member of the Princeton clubs of Washington and New York City, the Army and Navy Club, the Barristers and Barber-Briggs American Legion Post 247. He was founder of the Boyds Federal Credit Union and was listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Railroading.

For most of his life, Mr. Chadwick was a communicant of the Church of the Ascension, Gaithersburg, where he had served in many offices. Since 1983, he was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Poolesville.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, George A. Chadwick III of Alexandria, Charles M. Chadwick of Union Bridge, Jane Seamans Adams of Blodget, Ore., and Dan L. Seamans of Boyds; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Church of the Ascension, 205 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 20100 Fisher Ave., Poolesville, Md. 20837.

Arrangements are by Pumphrey's Funeral Home, Rockville.

Mrs. Mildred Horn
Dated: Monday, July 23, 2001.
Mrs. Mildred Ruth Horn, 82, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 19, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

She was the wife of James C. Horn Sr., her husband of 63 years.

Born Oct. 9, 1918, in Four Locks, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Amy Elizabeth Moser McLucas.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by five daughters, Ruth Johnson and Betty Seibert, both of Hagerstown, Virginia Kimble of Warrenton, Va., Dolores Izer-Horn of Williamsport, and Mary Bisesi of Hagerstown; one son, James C. Horn Jr. of Hagerstown; one sister, Helen Hornbaker of Hagerstown; four brothers, Earl McLucas of Wolfsville, and Gordon McLucas, Ralph McLucas and Robert McLucas, all of Hagerstown; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Della Souders, Ethel Whittington and Edith Dick; and one brother, Paul McLucas.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 23, at Rest Haven Funeral Home and Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Patricia L. Sebring officiating.

Interment will follow in Rest Haven cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 108 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Mr. Clark Schlossnagle
Dated: Monday, July 23, 2001.
Mr. Clark Howard Schlossnagle, 87, of 708 I St., Mountain Lake Park, died Saturday, July 21, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

He was the husband of Ethel Virginia Layman Schlossnagle.

Born April 12, 1914, in Accident, he was a son of the late Howard and Maude Spoerlein Schlossnagle.

Mr. Schlossnagle was a member of Bear Creek Church of the Brethren and served in various offices in the church. A retired farmer, he was a member and past director of the Garrett County Farm Bureau and participated in the Farming for Better Living program.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Louis Schlossnagle of Bowdon, N.D., Roy Schlossnagle of Columbiana, Ohio, and Ellis Schlossnagle of Frederick; two daughters, Darlene Almon of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Linda Sanders of Oakland; five brothers, Raymond Schlosnagle of Friendsville; Marvin Schlosnagle of Rochester, Minn., Eugene Schlosnagle of Carlisle, Pa., and John and Glen Schlosnagle, both of Accident; five sisters, Mabel Graves of Coudersport, Pa., Gladys Broadwater of Louisville, Ky., Eleanor Grove of Waynesboro, Pa., Marjorie Higley of Morris, Pa., and Dorothy Moon of Watkinsville, Ga.; 22 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 23, at Newman Funeral Home, 26722 Garrett Highway, Accident.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Bear Creek Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Wegman officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services.

Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Southern Rescue Squad or the American Cancer Society.
