January 9, 2001

Carl Egbert Daley of Hurlock died on Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at the Genesis Eldercare-The Pines, Easton. He was 80.

Mr. Daley was born on July 23, 1920 in Fairview, NJ. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was in the hardwood floor business all of his life.

In addition to his wife, Iris Gay Daley of Hurlock, he is survived by three sons, Gary Lee Daley of Thurmont, MD, Michael Jay Schultz of Oak Grove, KY, and Matthew Bryan Schultz of Annapolis, MD; a brother, Dr. Robert Daley of Manlius, NY; a sister, Moira Miller of Schenectady, NY; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be held at the Maryland Veterans cemetery-Eastern Shore Chapel on Friday, January 12, 2001 at 11:00 AM.

James F. Lawrence of Grasonville died at his home on Tuesday, January 9, 2001. He was 84.

Born on February 28, 1916 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Gurtrude Lieser Lawrence. He attended McKinley High School in North East Washington D.C., and then went to work at age 18 as a milk delivery man. Mr. Lawrence was drafted into the U.S. Navy on May 5, 1943, and served during WWII on the U.S.S. MARBLEHEAD in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Oceans. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Embassy Dairy as a milkman, and worked his way up to management before retiring on April 30, 1974.

He married Edith Rita Husband on April 17, 1937, and she died on July 17, 1968. On May 2, 1969 he married Violet V. Kirby of Oxenhill, Maryland. He was a member of the Grasonville Seventh Day Adventist Church.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Lawrence is survived by a son, James Francis Lawrence, Jr. of Annapolis, MD, a daughter, Mary Ann Campbell of Melbourne, FL, two brothers, Joseph P. Lawrence, Jr. of College Park, MD and Rolland B. Lawrence of Winter Park, FL, four grandchildren, Robert Campbell and Shelly Owens, both of Palm Bay, FL, Anne Lawrence of Frederick, MD and Matthew James Lawrence of Lexington Park, MD, and four great-grandchildren. Two brothers, William J. Lawrence and John T. Lawrence predeceased him.

Services will be held at the Grasonville Seventh Day Adventist Church on Friday, January 12, 2001 at 2:30PM. Family and friends may call at the church on Thursday, January 11, 2001 from 3:00 PM till 5:00 PM and from 7:00 PM till 9:00 PM. Burial will be at Stevensville cemetery.

A Funeral Liturgy for Anna M. Shakespeare of Easton, MD formerly of Old Greenwich, CT, will be celebrated at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Easton, on Tuesday, January 9th at 10 A. M. Mrs. Shakespeare died at her home on Saturday, January 6, 2001 of lung cancer. She was 65.

Born in Bethlehem, PA, Sept. 12, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Calvin C. and Hannah Deane Christman. After graduating from Bethlehem High School, she attended the St. Luke's School of Nursing in Bethlehem where she graduated at the top of her class in 1956. She then nursed at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City until her marriage to William Shakespeare in July of 1960. They made their home in Old Greenwich where she was a member St. Clements Catholic Church, served on the Board of Directors of The Mary Fund and was involved in many other civic activities.

Since moving to Easton in 1992, she has been a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton, Talbot Country Club and the Board of Directors of The Talbot County Historical Society. She has also been very active in the work of the Habitat for Humanity.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Catharine Shakespeare of Branford, CT and Judith Dill of Riverton, N.J.; a son, William C. Shakespeare of Framingham, MA; a sister, Catharine Novak of Coopersburg, PA and two grandchildren, Victoria and Jonathan Shakespeare. Burial will be at Old St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery, Cordova, MD. Friends may call on Monday evening Jan. 8th, from 7 - 9 P.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Anna Shakespeare Education Fund, % Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1209, Easton, MD 21601, ATT: Doug Collison.

Eleanor M. Yater, of Preston, died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Tuesday, January 9, 2001. She was 77.

Born in the Bronx, New York City, Feb. 6, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Katherine M. Trainor Turner. After graduating from high school, she worked as a booking agent for Loews M.G.M. in Manhattan, N. Y. for fifteen years. She then worked for the Gillette Company in New York and Chicago in Marketing and Distribution.

In 1958, she married Joseph H. Yater, Jr. and they made their home in Cranford, N. J. and then Toms River, N. J. In 1974, they moved to the Easton, Md. area and in 1991 to the Preston area. She worked for fifteen years as a switchboard operator at Memorial Hospital at Easton, before retiring in 1993.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Joan M. Yater of Preston; a son, Joseph F. Yater of Templeville; a sister, Ann Marie DeBlasio of Allenhurst, N.J.; a brother, Frank J. Turner of Hurst, TX and two grandchildren, J. Zachary Yater and Kelsey L. Yater.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 12th, at 10 A. M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 209 E. Market St., Salisbury, MD 21801.

January 8, 2001

James Samuel Kreeger, Jr., of Cambridge died on Monday, January 8, 2001 at the Chesapeake Woods Nursing Home in Cambridge. He was 86.

Born in Chestertown on April 21, 1914, he was the son of the late James S., Sr., and Fannie Anthony Kreeger. As a resident of Easton, he worked for Hess Apparel as a store manager until 1971. After retiring, he worked for William Hill Manor as a chauffeur until 1995.

In his earlier years, he was also active as a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and in the Talbot Country Club where he served as President and was an avid golfer. For the last three years, he lived in Cambridge with his granddaughter, Andrea Kreeger Waters. His first wife, Deborah Brown Kreeger, whom he married in 1932, died in 1973, and his second wife, Gail K. Kreeger, whom he married in 1974, died in 1991.

In addition to the granddaughter he lived with, he is survived by three other grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Frances Kreeger Tully of Chestertown. Two sons, James S. Kreeger, III and Lynn T. Kreeger, and a sister, Ann K. Matthews, are deceased.

Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton on Friday, January 12, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Delmarva Community Services, P.O. Box 637, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Claude Grover Pardoe, formerly of Cordova died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Monday, January 8, 2001. He was 97.

Born on May 10, 1903, he was the son of the late William S. and Lona lane Pardoe. After attending Talbot County public schools, he started a lifelong career in farming on a rented farm in the Chapel District. In 1928, he married the former Bertha Mae Simpson and in the 1930's they purchased their own farm in the Cordova area, the Long Range Ranch. Mrs. Pardoe died in 1978.

Mr. Pardoe also worked as a rural mail carrier in Talbot County until retiring in 1979. He continued farming until 1983. Mr. Pardoe was a member of the Talbot County Farm Bureau. Mr. Pardoe is survived by two sons, Samuel Lee Pardoe of Cordova and Robert Pardoe of Chestertown; a brother, Raleigh Pardoe of Easton; one sister, Marge Lutz of Easton; and three grandchildren, Lisa Pardoe of Cordova, Robbie Pardoe and Mary Christina Pardoe, both of Chestertown.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Friday, January 12, 2001 at 1:00 PM. Service to be officiated by Rev. Robbie Townsend, pastor of the Double Creek United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8 PM. Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton. Memorial donations may be made to the Cordova Vol. Fire Dept., Cordova, MD 21625.

January 7, 2001

William Merle Coleman of Rock Hall, Md. died at his home Sunday morning, January 7, 2001. He was 61.

William Merle Coleman was born July 22, 1939 the son of the late Wesley and Frances Coleman "Elburn". He graduated from Rock Hall High school in 1958 and shortly after joined the United States Army. After serving his country he came back to Rock Hall where he has resided ever since.

Mr. Coleman worked as a self employed contractor, a painter, and a commercial waterman in the Rock Hall area.. Mr. Coleman was a member of the American Legion Post 228, and a past member of the Waterman's Association. He enjoyed photography and fishing.

William M. Coleman is survived by one daughter Terri Coleman of Louiville, Ky. , two sons, Michael Coleman of Hagerstown, Md. and William Coleman of Suisun, Ca. , two brothers, Wesley Coleman of Worton, Md. and Russell Coleman of Georgia, three sisters, Jenny Simns of Rock Hall, Md., Peggy Hepbron of Townsend, De. and Edna Mae Morris of Chestertown, Md. , four grandchildren and 1 step grand daughter. He was preceded in death by one son, Leonard Coleman and one brother Albert Coleman.

A Viewing will be held Saturday January 13, 2001 at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 6179 Rock Hall Road, Rock Hall, Md. from 2- 4 pm. Interment will be private by the family. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to be sent to the American Legion Post 228 , P.O. Box 207 Rock Hall, Md. 21661 or to the Rock Hall Fire Department, P.O. Box 577, Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

Margaret T. Marvel of Easton, MD and Selbyville, DE died at the Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin on Sunday, January 7, 2001. She was 71.

Born in Havre de Grace January 30, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Ernest C. and Emily D. Todd. After graduating from Havre de Grace High School in 1945, she, in September 1948, married Wendell J. Marvel. They made their home in Talbot County where she first worked as a secretary for the Talbot County States Attorney. She then worked as a secretary for the Anthony and Latham Co. She remained with the Latham firm where she received her Real Estate license in 1959. Later she earned her brokers license and started her own real estate business, Margaret T. Marvel Realty in which she remained active until retiring in the 1970'S.

A resident of Talbot County since her marriage, she also maintained a summer home in Selbyville, DE. She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks, Easton Lodge #1622 and a former member of the Talbot Soroptomist Club. Her husband died in November 1985.

Mrs. Marvel is survived by a daughter, Wendy M. Elliott of Easton; three sisters, Esther Keys of Arcadia, FL, Mildred Brumfield of Forest Hill, MD and Jean Lupi of the Bronx, New York City; three grandchildren, Todd E. Elliott, April J. Elliott and Jena L. Elliott. A brother, Ellis Todd, is deceased.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2001 at 11 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, 8400 Roosevelt Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19152 or the Easton Vol. Fire Dept, Creamery Lane, Easton, MD 21601.

Benjamin Hayden Pentz, Sr., of St. Michaels, died at the Talbot Hospice House, Easton, on Sunday, January 7, 2001. He was 94.

Born in Baltimore, March 2, 1906, he was the son of the late Charles William and Angela Josephine Grossi Pentz. He was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic. The majority of his business life was spent in real estate and typewriter sales. He represented the Royal Typewriter Co. in the Midwest for a number of years and later owned and the operated the Callaway Typewriter Co. in Salisbury, MD where he lived from 1958 until 1971.

Following the sale of that business, he moved to Talbot County where he was active in real estate sales until retiring in 1987. A member of Christ Church, St. Michaels, he was a former member of the Edge Creek Boat Club, the Miles River Yacht Club and the Talbot Dance Club.

Mr. Pentz is survived by his wife, the former Frances Louise Merryman whom he married in November of 1954; a brother, John A. Pentz of Easton and two grandchildren. A son, Benjamin Hayden Pentz, Jr., died in July of 1991.

Memorial services will be held at Christ Church, St. Michaels, on Wednesday, January 10th, at 2 p.m. Entombment will be in the Christ Church Columbarium.

Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Dr., Easton, MD 21601 or to the St. Michaels Vol. Fire Company, St. Michaels, Md 21663.
