Mr. James Roberson
Dated: Monday, April 9, 2001.
Mr. James Thomas Roberson, 73, of Lovettsville, Va., died Saturday, April 7, in Lovettsville.

He was the husband of Mary L. Roberson.

Born April 27, 1927, in Hendersonville, N.C., he was a son of the late Ben and Bessie Abbott Roberson.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a shop manager for Chesapeake Petroleum until he retired in 1993.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children, Sharon Smith and Linda Via of Falls Church, Va., Diane Witmer of Manassas, Va., Pat Hay of Virginia Beach, Va., Daniel Roberson of Silver Springs, James Roberson Jr. of Annandale, Va., and Ronald Roberson of Sterling, Va.; two sisters, Mildred Stafford of Norfolk, Va., and Elisabeth Skipper of Michigan; two brothers, Clarence Roberson of Mount Airy, and Pete Roberson of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He will also be remembered by his friends, James and Peggy Graham of Hamilton, Va.

Friends may call Monday, April 9, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 32 E. Broadway St., Lovettsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 10 at the funeral home with the Rev. Patricia Riggs officiating. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Taylorstown, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northern Virginia, P.O. Box 1576, Merrifield, Va., 22116-1576.

Mrs. Rhoda Boone
Dated: Monday, April 9, 2001.
Mrs. Rhoda Virginia Halter Boone, 95, of West Baltimore Street, Taneytown, died Sunday, April 8, at Carroll County General Hospital, Westminster.

She was the wife of John Donald Boone, who died in 1960.

Born Aug. 10, 1905, in Mayberry, she was a daughter of the late William J. and Annie Marker Halter.

Mrs. Boone was a member of St. Mary's United Church of Christ, Silver Run; Union Bridge Plymouth Chapter 41, Order of the Eastern Star; and the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Co. auxiliary.

She retired from Cambridge Rubber Co., Taneytown.

Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Carrie R. Boone of Taneytown; one grandson, Joseph R. Boone of Taneytown; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Mrs. Boone was preceded in death by one son, Robert Donald Boone, in 1982; one sister, Cora Hunt; one brother, Paul Halter; and one grandson, Daniel Robert Boone.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Skiles Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the funeral home, with Mrs. Boone's pastor, the Rev. Richard W. Scott, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Church of Christ cemetery, Silver Run.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's United Church of Christ, 1441 E. Mayberry Road, Westminster, Md. 21158.

Mrs. Gladys Huff
Dated: Monday, April 9, 2001.
Mrs. Gladys M. Brown Huff, 86, of 13541 Dutrow Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. and a resident at Manorcare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa., died Sunday, April 8, at the nursing home.

She had been in failing health for the past two years and critically ill for the past month.

She was the wife of Joseph F. Huff Sr., who died Jan. 4, 1965. They were married Nov. 1936, in Sabillasville.

Born Sept. 4, 1914, in Highfield, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Esther B. McLaughlin Brown.

Mrs. Huff lived her early life in Highfield.

She attended Highfield School and then Smithsburg High School.

Mrs. Huff had lived at the Dutrow Lane address for more than 20 years. She entered the nursing home on March 24, 2001.

She was employed with the Army/Air Force Exchange System at Fort Ritchie for 25 years, where she last worked as assistant manager at the post exchange. She retired in 1976.

Mrs. Huff was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Highfield.

Surviving are one daughter, Lois May Huffman of Sicklerville, N.J.; three sons, Joseph E. Huff Jr., James F. Huff and Jeffery B. Huff, all of Waynesboro, Pa.; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Dixon and Pauline Hahn, both of Smithsburg, and Joyce Hays of Shippensburg, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Huff was preceded in death by one sister, M. Geraldine Brown; three brothers, Herbert U. Brown, C. Lee Brown, and Thomas C. Brown; and one nephew.

There will no public viewing.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Kelly L. Crenshaw officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Church cemetery, Cascade. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the funeral home.

Mr. Maurice Dade
Dated: Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
Mr. Maurice Lee Dade, 96, a lifelong resident of Jefferson, died Monday, April 9, at his residence, 3850 Shadywood Drive, Jefferson.

He was the husband of Hazel Louise Cawood Dade, his wife of 73 years.

Born Sept. 5, 1904, in Jefferson, he was a son of the late Roger L. and Susan E. Ball Dade.

He was a graduate of Frederick High School and had a dairy farm in the Jefferson area until he retired from farming in 1959.

He then became associated with Frederick County Agricultural Stabilization Association until his retirement.

He was a lifelong member of Jefferson United Methodist Church and had taught Sunday school.

He was a member and former president of Frederick County Farm Bureau, a member of Holstein Association of Frederick County, and Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Association.

He participated for many years in Maryland Tree Conservation Program.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Joyce Remsburg and husband Merhl, and Stanley Dade and wife Alma, all of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Marilyn Young, Jody Rood, Leasa Mercer, Joe Dade and Vickie Dade; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Readon, Dusty Rood, Dallas Rood and Katie Renner; and one great-great-grandson, Henry Readon.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

The family will receive friends at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., on Wednesday, April 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at the funeral home. The Rev. Lori M. Hoffman, pastor of Jefferson United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to either the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 3882 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, Md. 21755, or to Jefferson Ambulance Co., P.O. Box 578, Jefferson, Md. 21755.

Mrs. Corrinne Watkins
Dated: Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
Mrs. Corrinne Bennett Watkins, 100, of Mount Airy, died Monday, April 9, at Homewood at Crumland Farms Nursing Center, Frederick.

She was the wife of the late Donald E. Watkins, to whom she was married for 49 years. They were married in 1924 and built their home on South Main Street in 1936.

Born Jan. 6, 1901, in Lonaconing, she was a daughter of the late Burman and Margaret Linn Bennett.

She graduated from the Frostburg Normal School in 1921 and began teaching first grade at Mount Airy Elementary School.

She retired in 1963, after 42 years of teaching several generations of Mount Airy residents.

She was a member of Retired Teachers Association, an original member of the Mount Airy Garden Club and Mount Airy Ki-Wives. She was a past matron of Eastern Star Prudence Chapter 95 Mount Airy.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, serving in many positions, including president of the conference and lay delegate to the conference.

She is survived by one nephew, Donald J. Bell and wife Carolyn; one grandniece, Brenda Bell Williams; one grandnephew, Brad Leigh Bell and wife Leslie; one great-niece, Megan Bell; and two great-nephews, Justin Williams and Nathan Bell.

She was preceded in death by three siblings, George Linn Bennett, Lola Porter Bennett Bell and Elizabeth Linn Bennett.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Prudence Chapter 95 Order of Eastern Star will conduct memorial services at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 12, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St., Mount Airy.

Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Irene Cecil
Dated: Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
Mrs. Irene Long Cecil, 78, of Frederick, died Sunday, April 8, at the home of her daughter.

She was the wife of Arthur Bud Cecil, who died in January 1995.

Born Feb. 16, 1923, in Mount Airy, she was a daughter of the late Clifford and Ethel Long.

For many years, she worked with her husband on dairy farms, in janitorial services with Eastalco and in house cleaning.

She is survived by four daughters, Janice L. Calhoun of Frederick, Barbara A. Cecil of Texas, Catherine B. Dustin and husband Carlton of Bowie, and Sharon L. Domer of Frederick; one brother, Chester Long and wife Ruth of Frederick; one sister, Lillian Bartholow of Frederick; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Catherine Moggy of Frederick; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Roland Long.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the funeral home. The Rev. Ross M. Jackson, of Westfalls Christian Community Church, Mount Airy, will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, Md. 21702.

Mr. Walter Smith
Dated: Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
Mr. Walter E. Smith, 90, of Colony Court, Walkersville, died Monday, April 9, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was preceded in death by three wives, Margaret Ann Smith, Eliza Maud Smith and Pearl J. Smith.

Born Feb. 9, 1911, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he as a son of the late Franklin C. Smith and Marcella A. Boecklin Smith.

He was a graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor of science degree.

He was employed as an electrical engineer with Bell Labs in New Jersey, retiring after 40 years service.

He attended church, and recently attended St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Walkersville.

He is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Clemson; one son, David Smith; one brother, Franklin E. Smith; four grandchildren, Susan Marie Webb, Diane Margaret Schaefer, Christofer Walter Smith and Alyce Smith; one great-grandson, Chase Daniel Webb; five stepsons, Joseph James Trembulak, Richard Thomas Trembulak, Ronald Robert Trembulak, Robert Ratay and Raymond Ratay; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville. The family will receive friends at the church one half hour prior to services. The Rev. Richard J. Murphy will be the celebrant.

Interment will be in Glade cemetery, Walkersville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Timothy's Catholic Church, in memory of Mr. Walter Smith, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, Md. 21793.

Mrs. Martha Koons
Dated: Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
Mrs. Martha Ellanor Koons, 70, of 1710 Wilt Road, New Windsor, died Sunday, April 8, at Carroll County General Hospital, Westminster, following an extended illness.

She was the wife of William S. Koons, her husband of 50 years.

Born March 27, 1931, near Shellsburg, Pa., she was a daughter of the late James and Clara Dick Hilleary.

She was a member of St. Luke's Winters Lutheran Church, New Windsor, where she had formerly taught Sunday school.

She was formerly employed as a nurse's aide at Springfield Hospital, Sykesville, and retired in 1985 from Carroll County Health Department as a vision and hearing tester, working in public and private schools throughout Carroll County.

She loved bluegrass music, camping and bird watching.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Patricia Dunphy of Finksburg, and Susan Britt and husband Robert of North Wales, Pa.; two sons, William S. Koons Jr. of Columbia, and Kenny Koons and wife Leah of Hickory; five grandchildren, Martin Dunphy, Lauren Britt, Heather Britt, Sarah Britt and Kenny Koons; one sister, Marguerite Malone and husband David of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; one brother, Ralph Hilleary of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lindsay Ann Britt; one sister, Clara Hilleary; and three brothers, Earl Hilleary, John Hilleary and Levi Hilleary.

The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, on Tuesday, April 10, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the funeral home with the Rev. Anne Durboraw, her pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Winters cemetery, New Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke's Winters Lutheran Church, c/o Phyllis Bassler, 1401 New Windsor Road, New Windsor, Md. 21776; or to Carroll Hospice, 95 Carroll St., Westminster, Md. 21157.
