January 5, 2001

John Charles Barcus of Centreville, MD died on Friday, January 5, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. He was 80.

Born March 14, 1920, he was the son of the late William James and Alice Rousie Storey Barcus. He attended school in Willoughby, MD and he made his home with his parents until their deaths when he moved to Centreville.

Mr. Barcus is survived by three sisters, Alice Dwyer of Mt. Airy, Loretta Carlin of Clifton Heights, PA and Nellie R. Shortall of Lewes, DE. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel of the Maryland Veteran cemetery, Hurlock on Wednesday, January 10, 2001 at 11:00.

Burial will be at the Maryland Veteran cemetery, Hurlock.

Edward C. Olson, formerly of St. Michaels, and long time Baltimore County resident died at his home in Easton, Md. on Friday January 5, 2001 after a short battle with brain cancer.

With him at time of death was his wife of 55 years, Mary Lee and daughter Lee Healy of Perth, Australia. He is also survived by his son Edward C. Olson Jr. and wife Patricia, both of Greenville South Carolina, his sister Norma Grogan and husband R. A. Grogan of Lake Montezuma, Arizona and 4 grandchildren in Australia.

Edward Olson was born in San Bernadino California on March 12, 1923, the only son of Lucy and Conrad Olson. He attended Compton Junior College where he was Student Body President. After graduation he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He graduated in 1945 with the class of 1946, which was shortened to 3 years due to demands of WWII. Soon after the end of WWII he resigned his commission in the navy and began work at Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point, Md. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served until April of 1954.

Upon entering civilian life again, he returned to Bethlehem Steel where he rose to Assistant General Manager. In 1980 he was promoted to General Manager of Bethlehem's plant in Steelton, Pa. A further promotion sent him to Bethlehem, Pa. as a corporate Vice President in 1983.

He retired in 1985 and moved to St. Michaels, Md. where he had built a house on Long Haul Creek. Not one for being idle in his retirement, he became active in the local community and was a member of the Power Squadron for many years, becoming commander for a term as well as joining various committees in Martingham. He was president of WOA for a year and served on the architectural and sewer and water committees. He also enjoyed the local men's club activities as well as being a keen golfer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, Md. 21601 and thanks them for their care and support during Edward's short illness.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday January 9, 2001 at 2pm at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam.

Clara May Seigler of Bethlehem died at her residence on Friday, January 5, 2001. She was 61.

Born in Queen Anne on March 7, 1939, she was the daughter of Annebel Fogwell Whitby of Bethlehem and the late Charles L. Whitby, Jr. As a resident of Bethlehem for the last 22 years and a former resident of Easton, she worked for Airpax in Cambridge as an electronics assembler and for Solo Cup in Federalsburg as a machine operator where she worked for the last 15 years.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Charles L. Whitby, III of Bethlehem; a brother, Charles A. Whitby of Trappe; and a sister, Mary "Betty" Corder of Dallas, TX. Memorial services will be held at Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private.

Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1306, Easton, MD 21601.

January 4, 2001

Charles Wesley Higgs, Sr. of Rock Hall, Md. died on Friday January 4, 2001 at his home. He was 56.

Born in Still Pond, Md. on Feb. 2, 1944 he was the son of the late William and Mamie Higgs. Mr. Higgs was a graduate of Chestertown High School class of 1962. He served his country with the U.S. Army from 1965-1967 when he was honorably discharged. Mr. Higgs moved back to Kent County and married Patsy Glenn in 1969.

They made their home in Rock Hall, Maryland where Mr. Higgs worked as a self-employed waterman with his wife and brother-in-law. He then worked with Tolchester Marina as a painter for approximately 18 years. Mr. Higgs enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends and family. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #652 Millington, Md.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son: Donald Perry Higgs of Rock Hall, Md., 3 granddaughters: Sara, Bobby, and Sheila Plato of Rock Hall, Md., a great grandson: Dakota Collison also of Rock Hall, Md. 3 brothers: Elwood Higgs of Millington, Md., Harvey Higgs of Dover, De., and Joe Higgs of Still Pond, Md. He is also survived by one sister: Geraldine Nicholson of Worton, Md. A son the late Charles "Brown" Higgs Jr. predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held on Monday January 8, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Rock Hall, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the home on 5865 Williams St. Rock Hall, Md. on Sunday January 7, 2001 between the hours of 2-4 and 6-8. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Charles W. Higgs Memorial Fund 5865 Williams St. Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

Ruth Kalb Kirk of Worton, Md. died on January 4, 2001 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. She was 93.

Born in Catonsville, Md. on June 23, 1907, she was the daughter of the late William and Caroline Kromm Kalb. Mrs. Kirk was a graduate of Catonsville High School and the Robert Beach Finishing School. She was married on May 25, 1935 to William W. Kirk Jr., former President and Owner of Bill Kirk Volkswagen in Owings Mills, Maryland.

They made their home in Washington D.C. until later moving to Reisterstown, Md. and after Mr. Kirk's retirement, they moved to Worton, Md., where they have permanently resided since 1990. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Worton, Md.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kirk is survived by a son: William W. Kirk III and his wife M. Christine of Eldersburg, Md., a grandson William Michael Kirk who resides in Kansas and a graddaughter: Susan Offley of Rockville, Md..

Funeral services will be held on Monday January 8, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at St. James United Methodist Church in Worton, Md. and on Tuesday January 9, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Ruck Funeral Home 1050 York Rd. (Beltway Exit 26-A) Towson, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday January 7, 2001 between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. and on Monday January 8, 2001 at Ruck Towson Funeral Home between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 pm. Interment will be in Dulaney Valley cemetery in Timonium, Md.

Beloved mother, grandmother & great grandmother, Mary Helen Usilton of Centreville, MD. died Thursday January 4, 2001 at her daughter’s home in Centreville, MD. She was 84.

Born on June 9, 1916 on Kent Island she was one of 13 children of the late William Henry Moore and Mary Helen Hall Moore. After attended school in Centreville, MD. she married Carroll Usilton on May 16, 1936 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Centreville, MD. She was a homemaker residing in Kent, Caroline and primarily in Queen Anne’s County where her husband farmed.

She was predeceased by her husband Carroll Usilton October 2, 1993 and a son Frederick Carroll Usilton. She was currently attending Centreville United Methodist Church with her daughters. Mrs. Usilton enjoyed sewing, making dolls & gardening.

She is survived by five children Norma Jean Heflin of Centreville, MD; Helen Lee Badur of Rehobeth Beach, DE.; George "Sonny" Usilton of Centreville, MD.; Nancy C, Morris of Centreville, MD. and M. Rebecca Chance of Centreville, MD. two sisters Florence Paugh of Easton, MD. and Geannette Collins of St. Michael’s, MD. 13 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2PM on Monday January 8, 2001 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD. Family and Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday January 7th, 2001 from 4PM to 6PM. Interment will be in Chesterfield cemetery in Centreville, MD.

Family request that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Ave. Queenstown, MD. 21658.

January 3, 2001

Walter Warner Cook, of Oxford, died at The Memorial Hospital at Easton on Wednesday, January 3, 2001. He was 94.

Born in Talbot County, January 2, 1907, he worked for many years as a commercial waterman, fishing party captain and pound net fisherman. He retired in 1972 from the Oxford Boatyard where he had worked for 15 years. A lifelong resident of Oxford, he was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church and a former member of the Oxford Vol. Fire Co. During World War II, he volunteered as a Minute Man.

Mr. Cook, or Minner or Cookie as he was best-known, was devoted to his family and was beloved by the Oxford community and all who knew him.

Surviving, are his wife of 69 years, the former Ethel G. Pope; a daughter, Ann C. Stewart, of Easton; three grandchildren, Cynthia A. Closs of Atlanta, GA, Michael E. Stewart of Easton and Rue P. Stewart of Baltimore and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 8th, at 2 P.M. at the Oxford United Methodist Church, Oxford, where friends may call one hour prior to service. Burial will be at the Oxford cemetery, Oxford.

February 28, 2001

Mary Anna Doran of Cranburry, N.J., died Wednesday, February 28, 2001 at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md. She was 80.

Mrs. Doran was born January 25, 1921 in Manhattan, NY the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Rommele. She was married to Richard William Doran from September 14, 1946 until his death on August 9, 1994. She was a lifetime employee in the corporate and international headquarters in New York City for the Phillip Morris company where she was in charge of payroll services for all corporate and international employees. After over 40 years with Phillip Morris she retired. She has spent the the last 3 years as a resident of the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md. after leaving her former home in Cranburry, N.J.

Mary A. Doran is survived by her nephew, John C. Broderick of Suburban Crumpton, Md., 2 niece’s, Barbara A. Delucia of Howard Beach, N.Y., and Mary Owen and husband George Owen of Tampa, Fl., 2 great nieces, Jennifer Delucia of Howard Beach, N.Y. and Amanda Owen of Tampa, Fl., and 3 great nephews, Joseph Delucia of Howard Beach, N.Y., Kevin Owen of Tampa, Fl. And Mathew Owen of Tampa, Fl.

A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the St. Rita Chrch in Howard Beach , N.Y. at 10:00 am. Entombment was held at the St. John’s cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, N.Y. following the mass. Arrangements handled by the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md.

In Lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern Shore Chapter, P.O. Box 665 Elkton, Md. 21921
