February 27, 2001

James John Joseph Carroll, Jr. of Stevensville, MD. Died Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. He was 84.

Born on July 12, 1916 in Wilmington, DE. He was the son of the late James J. Carroll, Sr. & Catherine J. Murnane. He attended schools at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in the Irish Catholic Democratic 10th Ward and St. Charles College Seminary in Baltimore. Mr. Carroll joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. in 1936, which later became the U. S. National Guard. On June 20th, 1942 he married Mary Esther Coale of Cedarvale Farm in Churchville, MD.

He was employed as a hook and ladder fireman for Truck Company #11 in Baltimore City until he was drafted into the U. S. Army. Serving his country during WW II as a Sergeant operating as a Message Center Chief, he landed on Omaha Beach (D+78), served in the European Theatre in England, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, Belgium, The Battle of the Bulge in Germany with the Headquarters Battery of the 557th AAAAWBN (Anti- Aircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons Battalion). Mr. Carroll was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, American Theatre Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, WW II Victory Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Award.

Returning home after the war he resumed his position with the Baltimore City Fire Department and later worked as a U. S. Park Ranger in Patapsco State Park. During this time Mr. Carroll returned to school on the GI Bill at the University of Maryland, College Park Campus where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture in 1954. He then began teaching math, science & vocational education for the Howard County Public School System. Mr. Carroll would later become a Federal Employee of the National Security Agency in Fort Meade. During his career he continued to serve in the Army Reserve with the 949th Transportation Division in Curtis Bay where he was the Master of the Hickory Knoll M/V (the largest vessel in the US Army) and was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer Grade 4. Residing at Shamrock in Ellicott City he retired in 1980. During his retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico, Scandinavia, Europe and the Caribbean. His wife predeceased him on October 10, 1996, and he later resided with his daughter on Kent Island in Stevensville, MD.

Prior to relocating to Kent Island, Mr. Carroll was active with the Catholic Church at the Church of the Resurrection in Howard County, was a member of the Jessup VFW Post #8097 and Senior Vice-Post Commander of the Columbia VFW Post #11136, and was the Neighborhood Commissioner of the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America (1960). He was a 3rd Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Notre Dame Council in Baltimore, Phoenix Society, Beltsville Garden Club, National Geographic Society, Maryland Historical Society, and the Howard County Historical Society. After moving to Stevensville he became very active at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester where he was a 3rd Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #7941, he participated in the Vacation Bible School Programs as an “Honorary Fire Marshall”, and was a member of the Family Parish Life Committee. He was a committee member with the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay-Junior Girl Scout Troop 226 on Kent Island, a member of the American Horticultural Society, and a member of the Cove Creek Club. Mr. Carroll was an avid gardener and spent many hours working in his greenhouse and vegetable garden.

Mr. Carroll is survived by a daughter, Catherine Coale Carroll Lynch of Stevensville, MD, two sons, James J. Carroll, III of Bellevue, WA and Patrick Murnane Carroll of Pasadena, MD, a brother, Daniel A. Carroll of Baltimore, MD, four grandchildren, Scott J. Carroll of Bellevue, WA, Briana Carroll Millman of Stevensville, MD, Elizabeth L. Carroll and Courtney J. Carroll both of Bellevue, WA, many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews. A sister, Katherine A. Carroll Lemon of Baltimore, MD and a granddaughter, Jennifer J. Carroll of Redmond, WA both predeceased him.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family & friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD on Monday, March 5, 2001 from 2 PM to 4 PM and 7 PM to 9 PM. A prayer will be said by Father Paul Jennings of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church at 3:30 PM, a prayer service will be said by the VFW Post #8097 at 7 PM, and the Rosary will be said by the Knights of Columbus Council #7941 at 8:30 PM at the Monday, March 5th viewings. Internment will be in Arlington National cemetery on March 27, 2001 at 1:00 PM.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Fatima Prayer Garden c/o St. Christopher’s Catholic Church P.O. Box 660 Chester, MD 21619.

Dr. Albert Roth of Chestertown, MD died on February 27, 2001 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home. He was 86 years old.

Dr. Roth was born in New York City, on December 7, 1914. He was the son of the late Bernhardt and Gussie Weiskopf Roth. Dr. Roth received his Bachelor of Science Degree from New York University, New York; and his Medical Degree at Medical School of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, University of London, England in 1943. He served in the Royal Air Force as a Medical Officer, Flight Lt. from 1943 until 1946 during WWII.

Dr. Roth married Joy James of London, England on Nov. 8, 1941. He and his wife moved to the United States in 1946, where he interned in New York City for 1 year. He opened a Medical practice in P.G. County in the Lanham and Riverdale, MD areas. He and his wife retired to Chestertown, MD in 1992. Dr. Roth was a past president of the Prince George's County Medical Society in 1963 and a member of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. Dr. Roth was Director of the Family Practice Program at Prince George's Hospital from 1975 to 1980. In addition to his wife of 49 years he is survived by 4 daughters, Sarah Roth of London, England, Caroline Petit of Melbourne, Australia, Rachel Roth of Tempe, Arizona and Victoria Roth of Chestertown, MD. and 4 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at St. Paul's cemetery in Chestertown, MD on March 1, 2001 at 10:30 a.m.

February 26, 2001

Amanda J. Landon of Grasonville, MD died on Monday, February 26, 2001 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis. She was 90.

Born in Grasonville, MD on March 10, 1910 she was the daughter of the late Harry and Agnes Sommers Baker. After graduating from Stevensville High School, she lived in Grasonville, Stevensville and Baltimore for a number of years. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grasonville. Her husband, James Norman Landon died in 1964.

Mrs. Landon is survived by a daughter, Marian Cianciosi of Annapolis, MD; four sons, James Landon of PA, John T. Landon of Stevensville, MD, Ronald Landon and William Landon, both of FL; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Private services were held.

Burial was in Stevensville cemetery.

Timothy D. Walbert of Scottsdale, Arizona, formally of Centreville, MD died on Monday, February 26, 2001 in the Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital, Chestertown, MD of an apparent heart attack. He was 39.

Born in Chestertown, Md, he was the son of the late Sterling and Helen Sparks Walbert, Sr. He was a self-employed landscaper and pool service operator. Mr. Walbert was a member of the Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing and anything to do outdoors.

Mr. Walbert is survived by his wife, Cheryl Ann Walbert; a son, T. Aaron Walbert of Centreville and a daughter, Brook Nicole Walbert, also of Centreville; two brothers, Sterling “Jay” Walbert, Jr. of Barclay, MD and Jeff A. Walbert of Centreville, MD.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2001 at 10:00 AM from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 408 S. Liberty St., Centreville, Md where friends and family may call on Thrusday evening from 7 ­9 PM.

Interment will follow the services in the Chesterfield cemetery, Centreville, MD.

February 25, 2001

Robert Hope Raleigh SR. of Chestertown, Md. died on February 25, 2001 at his home in Fairlee, Md. He was 77.

Born in Chestertown, MD on August 13, 1923 the son of the late Charles Albert and Sarah Gardner Raleigh. He graduated from Chestertown High School's Class of 1941. On October 14, 1948, he married Doris Foreman of Fairlee, MD. Mr. Raleigh worked with his brother in home construction until 1968 when he became a maintenance supervisor for Kent County Maryland until 1973. Mr. Raleigh became an inspector for the State of Maryland where he inspected new school construction on the Eastern Shore. He retired in 1984.

Mr. Raleigh was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Fairlee, MD. as well as the Chester Lodge #115 A.F. and A.M. in Chestertown, MD and a life member of the Chestertown Order of Eastern Star Chapter #86. Mr. Raleigh was also a member of the Gideons and St. Andrew's Society. He served as Grand Standard Bearer of the Grand International Lodge of the State of Maryland. Mr. Raleigh was also a member of the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons International; Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Maryland Grand Commandery; Knights Templar of Maryland, York Rite, Boumi Temple, and a charter member of Dr. John Coats Memorial Lodge. Mr. Raleigh served on the Commission on Aging as a member from 1989 until 1995. He also served on the advisory council of Upper Shore Aging, Inc. from 1991 until 1994. He enjoyed woodworking, boating and his family.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, a son: Robert Hope Raleigh, Jr. of Fairlee, Md., 2 daughters: Deborah Lynn Ray of Plant City, Fla. and Darlene Marie Kuechler of Centreville, Md. along with 8 grandchildren. 2 brothers the late Walter and Albert Raleigh predeceased him.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday March 1, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call on Wednesday February 28, 2001 between the hours of 6:00 until 8:00 at which time a Masonic Service will be held. Interment will be in Chester cemetery in Chestertown, Md.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Salem United Methodist Church 23055 Parsons Road Chestertown, Md. or Kent Hospice Foundation 103 Dixon Drive Chestertown, Md. 21620.

February 24, 2001

Anna Louise Gregory Kent of Chestertown, Md. died at her home on February 24, 2001. She was 75.

Born in Baltimore, Md. the daughter of the late Andrew and Adella R. Gregory. Her husband of 56 years, the late Myron H. "Bud" Kent predeceased her in September of 2000. Mrs. Kent was a homemaker for the majority of her life. She drove a school bus for approximately 5 years for Baltimore County School System. She and her husband retired to Chestertown, Md. in 1980. She is survived by her son Richard Kent of Alexandria, Va. and Chestertown, Maryland.

Graveside services will be held privately.

William Henry Myers, of Oxford, died at his home in Oxford on Saturday morning, February 24, 2001. He was 88.

Born February 22, 1913 at Plimhimmon Farm, Oxford, his family home for four generations, he was the son of the late William Henry and Wilson Strayer Myers. After graduating from Oxford High School, he attended the University of Maryland until his senior year when he returned home to manage the farm and take care of his extended family after the death of his father. He continued to farm for sixty-five years.

A lifelong hunter, he was a pioneer in the development of the commercial hunting business in Talbot County. Until the governmental ban on goose hunting, thousands of hunting enthusiasts, including such notables as Bing Crosby and the Crown Prince and Princess of Nepal, benefited from his knowledge of how to make a hunt successful.

At the time of his death, he was as member of the Board of Directors of the Talbot Bank in Easton where he had served for over fifty years including a term as Chairman and a Director Emeritus and past president of the Oxford cemetery Company. He served on the Board of Directors of the Memorial Hospital at Easton from 1969 - 1975 and as its Secretary from 1971 - 1975.

A founding member of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, he had also served a term as a commissioner of the Town of Oxford. He had a lifelong love of sailing and started sailing sixteen-foot knockabouts in the early days of racing in Oxford. Later, he successfully raced Star Boats, Penguins and cruising sailboats. Over the years, he won many Star Class Regattas on the Chesapeake Bay and nationally, including races in the Chicago, IL and Gibson Island, MD World Championships. Racing his cruising boats named "White Shadow", he and his family won the Annapolis Fall Series Viking Trophy and several Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association High Point Championships. He competed in many ocean races crewing on board "Reindeer" and "Dyna". He was a founding member of the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford and served as its Commodore from 1951 - 1953. He was also a member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club and served as its Commodore 1977 -78. He was a member of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake and served as a class representative for the Star class to the North American Yacht Racing Union. He was at home on any sailboat and successfully competed against some of the best sailors of his time.

Mr. Myers is survived by his wife, the former Grace Geiger Wilford whom he married in 1943; two daughters, Marjorie Myers Robfogel and her husband, James, of Rochester, NY and Eleanor Myers O'Mara and her husband, Gerald, of Oxford, MD; two grandsons, William Myers O'Mara of Cary, NC and Gerald Knight O'Mara of Oxford, Md. and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Bevan, in infancy, and Paul Robert Myers, M.D. and a sister, LuMar Myers Slocum.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at 11 A. M. at the Oxford United Methodist Church, Oxford, MD. Private burial will be at the Oxford cemetery, Oxford.

Memorial donations, in his memory, may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601 or to the Oxford Vol. Fire Co., P. O. Box 421, Oxford, MD or to the Oxford cemetery Company, P. O. Box 189, Oxford, MD 21654.
