Mr. John Smith

Mr. John Elmer Smith, 82, of Rolling Acres Farm, New Windsor, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 10, 2007 after a brief illness.--

Born February 24, 1925 on the family farm, he was the son of the late Dennis B. and Edna L. Mitchell Smith.--He was the husband of Mary Florence Peltz Smith, who died on July 20, 2007.--

Mr. Smith was a 1941 graduate of New Windsor High School and had attended the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the ROTC program.--He was a lifelong dairy farmer on the family farm.--He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, New Windsor, Maryland Farm Bureau and was a charter member of the Carroll County Progressive Farmers.--He loved playing cards with several bridge groups and was part of a 500 group for more than 50 years.--He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and being in the fields on his combine and haybine.--

Surviving are a daughter, Edna McNemar of New Windsor; two sons, John Parker Smith and wife, Marsha, of New Windsor and Malcolm W. Smith and wife, Linda, of Hanover, Pa.; a sister, Helen Humbert of Westminster; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.--He was predeceased by a brother, Dennis Mitchell Smith, in 1980.--

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 200 Main St., New Windsor, with Rev. Helen Armiger, his pastor, officiating.--

Interment will be in Winters cemetery, near New Windsor.--The family will receive friends at Rolling Acres Farm, 524 Smith Road, throughout the day on Tuesday, Nov. 13.--In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 250, New Windsor, MD 21776 or to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.

Mr. Robert Kight

Mr. Robert William Kight, 67, of Walkersville, died on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy D. Kight.

Born on October 27, 1940 in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late Thomas and Lola Harper Kight.

He worked for the Department of Energy for over 32 years as a computer specialist and retired in 1997. He was the AMVETS Executive Director for 14 years for the Department of Maryland and was AMVET of the year 2006-2007.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Rusty Kight and his wife, Laura, of Frederick, and Bryan Kight and his wife, Michelle, of Hagerstown; grandsons, Russell, Tyler and Ryan Kight; granddaughters, Melody, Bailey and Hannah Kight; one brother, Gordon Kight and his wife, Anna Lee, of Frostburg; and two sisters, Jean Beaman of Frostburg and Arlene Phiffer and her husband, Herbie, of Florida. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Kight was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Kight.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick where Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16. The Rev. Tim May will officiate. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the Jeffrey W. Kight Scholarship Fund C/O Community Foundation of Frederick County, 206 West 2nd Street, Frederick, MD 21701 or the charity of ones choice.

Ms. Mae Heffner

Mae Elizabeth Heffner, age 91, of Frizzelburg, died on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Long View Nursing Home in Manchester.

Born April 11, 1916 in Mayberry, she was the daughter of the late Paul T. and Matilda (Bowman) Hymiller. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 52 years, Markwood Staley Heffner in 1989.

She was a homemaker and attended Wakefield Bible Church in Westminster.

Surviving are children and spouses, Elizabeth H. Prise of Westminster, Timothy M. and Connie Heffner of Westminster, Janice M. Bowman of Hanover, Pa., and Lori D. and Mark Peterson of Littlestown, Pa.; a sister, Marion E. Shank of Westminster.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Barbara Rice in 2000, and by siblings, Kemp, Ray, Paul, and Jenette Hymiller, and Helen Myers.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, from the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster. The Rev. Frederick E. Horner will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Emmanuel Baust U.C.C. cemetery in Tyrone. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Doris Hipkins

Doris L. Hipkins, 74, of Myersville, died Saturday, November 10 at Western Maryland Hospital Center, Hagerstown.

She was born April 12, 1933 in Myersville and was the daughter of the late Grayson F. and Louise F. Miller Rice.

Doris was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Myersville, and was a dedicated volunteer coordinating many church functions and also making certain there were fresh flowers on the altar. She retired from the Frederick County Board of Education as a food service worker in the Myersville Elementary School and was a hostess at the Dan Dee Restaurant for several years.

Surviving is her husband of 52 years, John W. Hipkins; two sons, Nelson T. Hipkins and wife, Sharon, of Wolfsville and Kevin F. Hipkins and wife, Tammy, of Fairfield, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Katie Hipkins, Dustin Hipkins, Seth Hipkins and Eric Hipkins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Myersville, with Pastor Mary Worrell officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 at Ricketts Funeral Home, Myersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Chruch, P.O. Box 299, Myersville, MD 21773.

Mr. Christopher Borst

Christopher Ryan Borst, 26, of Smithsburg, passed away Friday, November 9, 2007 at his home.

Born Wednesday, February 11, 1981, in Sacramento, Calif., he was the son of Brian M. Borst and Christine P. Lewandowski McElroy of Greencastle, Pa.

He was a 1999 graduate of Mercersburg Academy and was also a counselor with Camp Horizons in Harrisonburg, Va.

Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mistie Witt of Hagerstown; grandfather, Robert Borst of Jessup; grandmother, Cecelia Lewandowski of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; aunt, Diana Donegan of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; aunt Dorothy Lutgen of Elma, N.Y.; uncle, Leonard Lewandowski of Alden, N.Y. and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Grace N. Borst.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 from the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Easter Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Assn., 801 Roeder Road Ste. 400, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Lt. Col. Leland Embrey

Lt. Col. Leland Edward Embrey was peacefully brought home to our Lord on Thursday, November 8, 2007 at his home. He has been married to his loving wife, Marion (Soliwoski) Embrey for 64 years.

Born June 6, 1917, in Bliss, Okla., he was the son of the late John Thomas Embrey and Bertha (Durand) Embrey. He graduated from Virgil High School in Kansas in 1935.

During WWII, Ed served as a bomber pilot in England flying 65 missions over Europe in a B-26 Marauder. His group led the airborne invasion of Normandy.

Throughout his 28 years in the Air Force, he was decorated for his service with many medals including The Distinguished Flying Cross, and The Joint Service Commendation Ribbon. He also served our country in the Philippines, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and at the Pentagon.

After retiring, from the Air Force, Ed worked at various jobs until he truly retired in 1991. He enjoyed re-upholstering furniture, and served the community through a variety of volunteer work, including the Red Cross.

He is survived by his wife Marion; six children, Lee Embrey of Carmel, Calif., Glenn Embrey and wife, Lola, of Redondo Beach, Calif., Joanne (Jan) Beaird and husband, Mike, of Billings, Mont., Peter Embrey and Peggy Campione, of Ashburn, Va, Denise Daly and husband, Chris, of Frederick, and Kevin Embrey and wife, Nina, of Bethesda; thirteen grandchildren, Alex and Erin Embrey, Sophie and Noah Embrey, Rachel Beaird and Grant Beaird and wife, Carrie, Michael Embrey and wife, Jocalyn, and Dan Embrey, Colleen, Scott, Elizabeth and John Daly, and Nicholas Embrey; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; and many dear and wonderful friends.

Ed was preceded in death by nine siblings, Roy, Lloyd, William, Jack, Ralph and Leo Embrey, Daisey (Embrey) Dobbins, Mary (Embrey) Crill and Robert Yingling.

Visitation with family will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville. Father Andrew Aaron and Father Keith W. Boisvert will officiate. Interment will follow at St. John's cemetery Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799 Frederick, MD 21702-1799, or to--the Frederick County Chapter, --American Red Cross, P.O. Box 189, Walkersville, MD 21793.

Mr. Robert Bishop Jr. and Mrs. Fern Bishop

Robert Fulton Bishop Jr., 79, of Frederick, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at the Washington Hospital Center. He was the loving husband of Fern Bishop of 44 years who passed away on October 16, 2007.

Born May 13, 1928, in Laurens, S.C., he was the son of the late Robert F. Bishop Sr. and Nomie Gossett Bishop. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Anthony and husband, Allen, and grandchildren, A.J. and Laura Anthony, of Frederick. He is also survived by children from his first wife, Catherine Rooney, Jack Bishop, and Barbara Guitard, of Rhode Island, as well as a daughter-in-law, Karen Bishop, and grandson, Ryan Bishop of Rhode Island. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine Lucy Redmond, sons, Robert Fulton Bishop III, David and James Bishop. He is also survived by a sister Mrs. Irene Williams of Greenville, S.C., and her husband, Franz. He was preceded in death by his sister Alma Kimbrell of Greenville, S.C.

Mr. Bishop served in the US Navy just after WWII. He was an upholster adjuster for Woodward & Lothrop for 40 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of Forcey Memorial Church in Silver Spring before moving to Frederick in 2005. His hobbies included gardening, cooking with his granddaughter Laura, fishing with his grandson, A.J., or watching him play basketball. He was always busy with home improvement projects, helping his neighbors or building remote control airplanes. He also had a love for flying and received his pilot's license in the early seventies. His favorite past time was time with his family or reading his Bible and spending time with his Lord and Savior.

Fern Elizabeth Bishop, 79, of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of Robert Bishop of 44 years, who passed away on October 21, 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anthony and husband, Allen and grandchildren, A.J. and Laura Anthony, of Frederick.

Born February 3, 1928 in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late George Edgar Towles Sr. and Fern Edith Towles. She is survived by a sister Marion T. Zook of Gaithersburg and was preceded in death by a brother, George Edgar Towles Jr.

Mrs. Bishop was a graduate of Roosevelt High Washington, D.C., Class of 1946. She worked for I.B.E.W. (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) for 43 years before retiring in 1989. Her favorite pastime was her grandchildren. She was a very loving and caring person and her family will miss her smile and unconditional love and generous spirit to those in need.

A memorial service to celebrate Robert and Fern's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Faith Baptist Church, 2212 Jefferson Pike, Knoxville, with Pastor Ed Jordan officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made for A.J. and Laura's tuition to New Life Christian School c/o New Life Fourscore Church, 5909 Jefferson Pike, Frederick, MD 21703 through the month of December 2007.

Mr. Ralph Weagley

Ralph W. Weagley, 85, of Quirauk School Road, Foxville, died Saturday, Nov. 10, at N.M.S. Healthcare, Hagerstown.

Born March 21, 1922 at Foxville, the son of the late Omar and Lulu Grace Smith Weagley.

He was a veteran of WWII U.S. Army.

He retired in 1983 from Noland Co., Hagerstown, with 36 years service.

He was a member of Garfield United Methodist Church, South Mt. Rod and Gun Club, Smithsburg.

He is survived by two sons, Richard M. Weagley of Rocky Ridge, and Kelly R. Weagley of Hagerstown; sisters, Charlotte Shipp of Killeen, Texas, Hilda Valencia of Bethlehem, Pa., and Elva Schultz of Frederick; two grandsons, Patrick Weagley, and Deane Weagley, both of Foxville; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sister, Freda Draper, brothers, Gerald Weagley, Hubert Weagley and Merle Weagley.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from J. L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, with Pastor Randy Reid officiating. Burial will be in Garfield United Methodist Church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Garfield United Methodist Church, 13628 Stottlemyer Road, Smithsburg, MD 21783.

Mrs. Natalie Hoover

Mrs. Natalie Elizabeth Stewart Hoover, 67, of Damascus, died on Sunday, November 4, 2007, at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. She was the wife of Mr. David W. Hoover.

Born on January 10, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Sanderson and Irene Elizabeth Mahoney Stewart. In addition to being a loving mother and homemake, Mrs. Hoover worked for many years with the Stewart family's photography business.

Surviving besides her husband are her children, William Morrison of Damascus, Sherry Louise Hunt of Richmond, Va., Donna Marie Poe of Winchester, Va., Joseph Stewart Morrison of Raleigh, N.C., and Monica Hoover of Inwood, W.Va. Natalie is also survived by eight grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and brother, George Stewart of Mount Airy.

A memorial service was held on Friday evening, November 9, at the Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus. Long-time family friend, the Rev. Mary Laymon officiated. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Mr. Donald Smith

Donald F. Smith, 90, of Middletown, died Saturday, Nov. 10, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Lucille Smith, who died June 21, 1999.

Born in Washington, D.C., Oct. 17, 1917, he was a son of the late John C. and Mabel Lutz Smith.--He was employed by Judd and Detweiler Inc., Washington, D.C. until his retirement.

He is survived by three children, Donald D. Smith of Middletown, John C. Smith of Barnesville, and Susan J. LaLone of Duncannon, Pa.; and 14 grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be held in Zion Lutheran cemetery in Middletown.

Mrs. June Landis Smith

June Landis Smith, 80, of Hagerstown, died Monday, Nov. 12, at her home.

Born September 17, 1927 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late John B. and Birdy May (Phebus) Landis.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of the Bowman School of Technology, Lancaster, Pa.

She retired from the family business, Landis Jewelry Store, Frederick where she worked as an engraver.

She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church, Hagerstown where she was part of the Evangelism Explosion Outreach Group. She also was a charter member of Haven Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, Earl R. Smith; two sons, Craig Landis Smith, of Williamsport and Keith Bennett Smith, of Hagerstown; four daughters, Gail Karen Smith, of Hagerstown, Pamela Ann Davis, of Hagerstown, Janel Susan Deavers, of Williamsport and Cheryl Lynn Smith, of Hagerstown; fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by two brothers, John B. Landis Jr. and James Phebus Landis.

Funeral services will be conducted at11 a.m., on Friday, Nov. 16, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Terry Broadwater officiating.

Interment will follow in Rest Haven cemetery.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, at the funeral home.
