Mr. Kermit Fillner

Kermit Ellis Fillner, 80, a resident of Lovettsville, Va., since 1972, died Sunday, Nov. 11, in Lovettsville. Mr. Fillner was born May 29, 1927 in Ettrich, Wisconsin to the late John and Clara Hagestad Fillner. He was raised in Lacrosse, Wisconsin and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Fillner retired from the Naval District of Washington as a senior systems analyst in 1982. He was an active member, past treasurer and lions tamer for the Lovettsville Lions Club. Mr. Fillner received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2006 for his humanitarian service. He is also a member of the Brunswick Moose Lodge #1582. Mr. Fillner was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Marie Jacobs Fillner in 1992 as well as two brothers, John and Warren, and two sisters, Harriet and Miriam.

Mr. Fillner is survived by his beloved daughter, Vanessa Everhart, of Hamilton, Va.; two sisters, Tess Sherwin, of Silver Spring, Clarice Rolfe, of Olney; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 13, at the Brown/Loudoun Funeral Chapels 34 East Broad Way, Lovettsville, Va. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m., Wednesday Nov. 14, with Rev. Tom Keithley officiating. Interment will follow in Lovettsville Union cemetery.

Donations may take the form of contributions to the Lovettsville Lions Club.

Mr. K. Dale Ashwell Sr.

Mr. K. Dale Ashwell Sr., 73, of Mount Airy died Monday, Nov. 12, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Nancy L. Griffith Ashwell, his wife of 55 years.

Born on June 5, 1934 in Lynchburg, Va. he was the son of the late George and Inez Snow Ashwell. Dale worked at Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point Shipyard with his father from 1953 to 1962; then as a sheet metal worker for Stromberg Sheet Metal in Washington, and for the last 33 years along with his family operated Ashwell Bus service, contracting school bus to Carroll and Howard County Public Schools. Mr. Ashwell was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Union #100, the Howard County School Bus Contractors Association, as well as the Triumph Boys Club and the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed racing stock cars, boating, hunting, coaching young athletes and working on his buses.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Dale Ashwell Jr. and wife, Denise, and Michael Ashwell and wife, Judy, all of Sykesville; a daughter, Charlene Johns and husband, Charles, of Westminster; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson; a sister, Joan Anne Ashwell, of Pasadena; and a daughter-in-law, Joanne Ashwell, of Westminster. Mr. Ashwell was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Ashwell and brother, Ben Ashwell.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, with Revs. Robert Murr and Gary Hicks officiating.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the K. Dale Ashwell, Sr. Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 289, West Friendship, MD 21794.

Mrs. Bernice "Bonnie" M. Lee

Mrs. Bernice "Bonnie" M. Lee died on Saturday, Nov. 10, at her home after a long battle with cancer. She was 58. Loving wife of Philip, and devoted mother of Adam, Caitlin, and Alexandra. Survived by parents, Mike and Molly; sister, Sandy; a nephew, nieces, and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, MD 21771. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006 or Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Avenue, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mr. Kirk Thomas Meinel-schmidt

Kirk Thomas Meinel-schmidt, 33, of 17814 Taylor's Landing Rd, Sharpsburg, passed away, Monday, Nov. 12, at the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

Born Wednesday, May I, 1974, in Glen Burnie, he was the son of Raymond and Karen Meinelschmidt.

Kirk graduated from Boonsboro High School in 1993. He enjoyed his cats, sewing, coin collecting, and was a WWE fan.

He is survived by sister, Wendy and husband, Ryan Chapin; two brothers, Eric Meinelsehimdt, Cort and wife, Gretchen Meinelschmidt; god-daughter, Emily Meinel-schmidt; and a niece, Rizzo Chapin.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 16, from the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, MD 21742, with the Rev. James O. Murr Jr. officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home, 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Renaissance Charitable Foundation care of the Kirk Meinelschmidt Fund, 18352 College Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Mr. John William "Mr. John" Yingling

John William "Mr. John" Yingling, 82, of Lynn Haven, Fla., died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at his home. He was born in Adamstown, on Sept. 25, 1925, to William and Edith Yingling. He served in the Air Force durlng World War II and during the Korean conflict, specializing in radar. After graduating from the University of Miami in 1959, he worked with Hughes Aircraft Co. as an electrical engineer for the Test Squadron at Tyndall Air Force Base for 16 years. He later worked for Hughes Aircraft In San Antonio and Denver.

He belonged to the White Whale Diving Unit at Tyndall Air Force Base and enjoyed spearfishing. John was a square dancer for 10 years with several clubs, including the Swingin' Squares. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling the U.S. and working out at HealthPlex with the many friends he made.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 35 years, Ruth M. Yingling; his sisters, Jean Yingling, of Adamstown, and Joyce Hinder, of Bel Aire; his children, Jan P. (Rick) Helfand, of Rosemary Beach, Fla., Jill K (Jim) Satterwhite, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and John T. Yingling, of Southport, Fla.; his stepchildren, Frankie Tibbetts (Hugh) Perego, of Nederland, Texas, and Kellie Tibbetts (Randy) DeMary, of Beaumont, Texas; his grandson, Joshua J. Satterwhite; stepgrandsons, David K. Perego, of Austin, Texas, and Justin P. DeMary, of Beaumont, Texas; and a stepgreat-granddaughter, Lauryn R. Perego, of Nederland, Texas. Visitation was held at noon Saturday, Oct. 27, at Wilson Funeral Home with a memorial service at 1 p.m.

Mr. Harry Ketterman

Mr. Harry Wesley (Henry) Ketterman, 69, of Frederick, died Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Kline Hospice House, in Mount Airy. He was the husband of the late Joan Carol Sutkiewiez Ketterman, who died in 2001.

Born in Frederick, on Jan. 25, 1938, he was a son of the late Harry A. and Dorothy Ford Ketterman.

He was retired from the Ponton's Auction House in Frederick, where he worked as a truck driver and mechanic.

Surviving are his two brothers, Jerry L. Ketterman and wife, Judy, of Frederick, and Gary W. Ketterman and wife, Becky, of Thurmont; two sisters, Betty M. Rowe and husband, Henry Jr., of Laurel and Margaret Blank and husband, Franklin Sr., of Frederick; brothers-in-law, Jeff, Jimmy, Timmy and Tommy SutKiewiez of Frederick; a sister-in-law, and caregiver, Marilyn Ketterman, of Frederick, and his niece and caregiver, Angel Kolbe, of N.C.; and nephew, Ben Bellassai, of Pasadena; also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, including, Samantha "Sam" LaGrave.

He will also be remembered by special friends, Charles Diggs, Charles Smith and Bill Scott.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry R. Ketterman Sr.

The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff of the Frederick Memorial Hospital, for there excellent care and to the staff of the Hospice House.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9, on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, from the funeral home. The Rev. Charles Beekley, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mr. George Hawes

George W. Hawes, 87, of Frederick, passed away on Monday, Nov. 12, at College View Center, Frederick. He was born on July 25, 1920 in Adamstown, and was the son of the late Charles and Rosa Bell Riley Hawes. He was the husband of the late Helen Schultz Brown.

Throughout his life, Mr. Hawes attended the Edgewood Church of God and the Lewistown United Methodist Church. During the depression, Mr. Hawes worked in the Civilian Conservation Corporation before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. He began by receiving training as a Tank Driver, Gunner and Radio Operator. He arrived in North Africa on May 21, 1944. He was attached to the 601st Tank Distroyer Battalion in Southern France. George and his unit were engaged in the following battles and campaigns, "Rome-Arno, " "Southern France, " "Rhineland, " and "Central Europe." His most memorable day was in Southern France, when several tanks in his unit came to the aid of U.S. infantry threatened by German Tanks.

In a letter written home, George reports to his mother that he destroyed three German tanks with three shots. In the same battle George's tank ran over a land mine, putting his tank out of action and wounding several men, including George. George received the Silver Star and Purple Heart Medal for his actions that day. George was discharged Oct. 19, 1945. After returning from the war, George worked at Ox Fiber Brush Co. where he met and later married his wife, Helen. He then became employed by the federal government at Fort Detrick and National Institute of Health retiring in 1992.

George's surviving children include his daughter, Sharon Hawes Oland and husband Terry of Urbana, and two sons, Mark Hawes and wife, Robin, of Frederick, and Ralph Brown and wife, Fae, of Jefferson. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Ginger Murphy Hawes, of Frederick. He is the grandfather, of Emily Oland Squires, of Ellicott City, Jamilyn Hawes, of Frederick, Cheryl Brown Smith, of Frederick, Carol Brown Cluster, of Knoxville and Douglas Brown, of W.Va. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Hawes is survived by two sisters, Margaret DiPaolo and Mary Gregg.

In addition to his wife, George is predeceased by one son, G. Wayne Hawes. He is also predeceased by brothers, Paul, Joseph, and Charles Hawes, and sisters, Mabel Hawes and Helen Staub, and his special friend, Ellen Gladhill.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, at the funeral home. The Rev. Elza Hurst will be officiating. The interment will be held at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Contributions may be made in Mr. Hawes' name to National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Area, 5335 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Suite 300, Washington, D.C. 20015.

Mrs. Vina Edwards

Mrs. Vina L. Edwards, 91, of Mount Airy, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007 at Heartfields. She was the wife of the late Vernon L. Edwards Jr.

Born February 25, 1916 in Caspian, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Joe and Anna Polich Kuchan.

Vina, a devoted daughter, wife and nurturing mother, was very supportive of her husband's career and made friends around the world. She enjoyed gatherings of family and friends and sought to make certain everyone was comfortable and had a good time. Beloved by all who knew her, she brought a smile to everyone's face whenever she entered a room. She was simply spectacular. Mrs. Edwards was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and was an avid bridge player.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Kingsley Edwards and her son-in-law, Michael Dunbar; nieces Kathryn Gelb, Mary Jo Kohunsky, and Peggy Sue Jorns; nephew, Joseph Kuchan; and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Irene Peterson and Audrey Jorns; brother, Emil Kuchan, and nephew, Stephen Jorns.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the St. James Episcopal Church, 1307 N. Main Street, Mt. Airy, with Rev. Portia Hirschman officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 and 6 to 7 p.m. at the church, prior to the service.

Interment on Friday, Nov. 16, Fort Lincoln cemetery, Brentwood.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

Mr. Dane Roberts

Mr. M. Dane Roberts Jr., 38, of New Market, died Sunday, Nov. 11, at his home.

Born July 30, 1969 in Olney, he was the son of M. Dane Roberts Sr., of Mount Airy and his step-mother, Cher, of Ruckersville, Va. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Wells Roberts.

Dane was employed as a carpenter by the Montgomery County School System. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, camping, collecting guns and loved working on his car. Dane always had a smile and his home was always open to everyone.

In addition to his father and step-mother, he is survived by his sister, Machelle Adkins and husband, Richard, of Poolesville; his best friend and brother, Carl Bourne; his aunts, who were like mothers, Carolyn Freeman and husband, Danny, of Ala. and Dee Ayers and husband, Kenny, of New Market; his nieces, Heather Day, Megan Lindsey and husband, Grant, Ashley and Samantha Adkins; his great nephew, Da' Shawn Stanton. Many cousins and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert and Pauline Roberts and maternal grandparents, Edgar and Edith Wells.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m, on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 16, at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissons Mill Road, Mount Airy, with Rev. Wayne Hall officiating.

Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Robert Routier

Mr. Robert G. Routier, 51, of Fairfield, Pa., passed unexpectedly at his home on Nov. 11, 2007. He was the husband of Myrna Ulloa, of Fairfield, his wife of 24 years.

Born March 31, 1956 in Augusta, Colo., he was the son of Joseph L. and Marian Routier, of Columbus, Ga. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a bachelor of science degree in environmental science, he served in the U.S. Army until 1987. After his active military service, he worked as a civilian at Fort Detrick, as a Post Safety Officer. Bob was active in Beth Sholom Congregation, Frederick, where he taught Sunday school for several years.

In addition to his wife and his parents, he is survived by six children, Yenda, Pablo, Rafael, Gizzelle, Fernando and Omar; two brothers, Sonny and Steve; a sister, Cheryl; eight grandchildren; two nephews; two nieces; and many other relatives and friends.

Committal services will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15th in the Chapel Mausoleum at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N. in Frederick. Interment will follow in the Garden of Solomon at Resthaven; Rabbi Morris Kosman will officiate. Please omit flowers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beth Sholom Community Center, 1101 N. Market St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Michael Pishvaian

Michael Masoud Pishvaian, of Poolesville, passed from this life on Nov. 11, at Georgetown University Hospital. He was 70 years old. He is survived by the light of his life, Azam Hedayatpour; his sister, Nasrin Keshmiri; his brother, Mohammed Pishvaeian; and four children, Michelle Vancura, of Milwaukee Wis., Julie Newcomer, of Mount Airy, Jennifer Clingan, of Frederick, and Michael J. Pishvaian, of Potomac.

He was a wonderful grandfather of eight, Katianne, Tyler, Matthew, Tess, Megan, Hannah, Nicholas and Christopher.

Michael was born in Kerman, Iran and came to the U.S. to earn his degree in engineering at a university in Iowa. He made his home in Poolesville, and lived life to its fullest. He enjoyed traveling to all ends of the earth and spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Hwy in Falls Church, Va. Interment will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Mike's memory to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, 5845 Richmond Highway Suite 800, Alexandria, VA 22303. 703-960-1100.

Mr. Lawrence Mills Jr.

Mr. Lawrence Carlton "Larry" Mills Jr., 49, of Frederick, died on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at College View Center, Frederick.

Born February 10, 1958 in Olney, he was a son of Lawrence Carlton Mills Sr. and his wife, Betty, of Frederick, and Eleanor Mae Fox Waters, also of Frederick. Larry worked as a chef in a number of area restaurants and was formerly a member of Laytonsville Methodist Church.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Jill Manahan, of Arnold; two brothers, Kenneth Mills of Frederick, and Richard Mills, of Laytonsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling at the funeral home. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Providence United Methodist Church, Kemptown. Burial will be in the Kemptown cemetery.

Mrs. Ruth Eyler

Ruth Cassell Galt Eyler, of Thurmont, died in Westminster after a brief illness. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Nov. 29, 1914.

She is survived by sons, Joseph Galt Eyler of Thurmont, and Joseph Eugene Eyler of Westminster. She was predeceased by her former husband, Joseph H. Eyler, a son, Joseph Albert Eyler, and a grandson, Joseph Sterling Eyler. She has five grandchildren, Mitzi Jo Eyler Campbell of Frankfort, Ind., Barbara Ann Eyler Garcia and husband, James, of Clearwater, Fla., Troy Stephen Eyler and wife, Dorothy, of Hillsdale, Pa., and Nicki Eyler of Thurmont. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Brittany May and Brooke Ann Eyler of Hillsdale, Pa., Sterling James Garcia of Clearwater, Fla., and Addison Eyler of Thurmont.

During her lifetime, she was a well-known horsewoman, harness racer and part-owner in the Eyler Liverstock Sale. She was the only woman to join her husband in the Frederick County Sports Hall of Fame.

At her request, there will be no service.

Mrs. Dorothy Riggleman

Mrs. Dorothy Riggleman, 81, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 at College View Center. She was formally a lifelong resident of Derwood. She was married to the late William T. Riggleman for 49 years before he passed in 1992. Born Feb. 7, 1926 in Montgomery County, she was the daughter of the late Washington L. and Viola M. Earp.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and aunt, especially to her brother Donald's sons. She helped raise them as if they were hers, because unfortunately she was never able to bear children. Her love for children shined through her work as a special ed bus driver's aide, also for special great-greatnieces and nephews: Bradley Earp, Meghan Bouchard, Victoria, Jerry, Hope Gue, and Natalie Earp.

She will be dearly missed by her second family at College View Center especially by her roommate and best friend, Betty Goines. Everyone there knew her as "Hot Dog" because that's all they had to feed her to get a smile!!

She is survived by two brothers, Donald C. Earp Sr. and his wife, Sara, of Frederick and Harry Earp, of Salisbury. Two special nephews, Donald C. Earp Jr. and his wife, Wendi, who also cared for Dorothy and Wayne D. Earp and his wife, Sue, of Abington, Pa. In addition to several other nephews and nieces.

She was predeceased in death by three brothers and one sister, Henry Earp, James Earp, Stanley Earp and Lillian Moton.

Family and friends can visit from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19 at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

Funeral services will follow immediately after, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Lloyd Fuss officiating.

Internment will be at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Rockville.
