Mr. Michael Pepper

Mr. Michael A. Pepper, 33, of Emmitsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Gettysburg Hospital.

He was the husband of Rebecca Sue Rakes Pepper, whom he married Jan. 17, 1998.

Born June 12, 1975, in Albany, N.Y., a son of Timothy and Cheryl Richmond Pepper of Andover, Ohio.

Mr. Pepper worked at NVR Homes of Thurmont, and was an active member and the choir director at the Pioneer Baptist Church, Thurmont. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and, especially playing with his four children. He was well-loved by all who knew him.

Survivors include his parents in Ohio and his wife Becky at home; four children, Hannah Beth Pepper, Wyatt Austin Pepper, Emma Grace Pepper, and Matthew Owen Pepper, all at home; a sister, Rebecca Miller and husband, Todd, of Greenville, Pa; a brother, Paul Pepper and fiance?, Tiffany, of Mawmee, Ohio; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Michael and Linda Rakes of Thurmont; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael Rakes II and wife, Casey, of Thurmont; several nieces and nephews also suvive, including, Abigail, Ashley, Lane, Colby, and Tyler.

Mr. Pepper is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. There will be no visiting or calling at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Pioneer Baptist Church, 13802 Long Road, Thurmont. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, with his pastor the Rev. James Coblentz, officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

Memorial donations may be made for the children of Michael and Rebecca Pepper, c/o Pioneer Baptist Church, 13802 Long Road, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mrs. Virgina McElfresh

Mrs. Virginia Mae Burdette McElfresh, 84, formerly of Damascus, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Lindsey L. McElfresh.

Born Oct. 2, 1923, in Woodfield, she was a daughter of the late John Norman Sr. and Dorcas Ifert Burdette.

Mrs. McElfresh was a hairdresser and operated a beauty shop from her home in Damascus for 23 years.

After retirement she enjoyed spending time with family and friends at her homes in Ocean City and in Florida. Virginia enjoyed crocheting and crafting; was a member of Damascus United Methodist Church, and sang in the church choir.

Surviving are her daughter, Joyce A. Farkas and husband, Steve, of New Windsor; five grandchildren, Jennifer Hedinger of Strongsville, Ohio, Sheila Roark and John McElfresh, both of Damascus, Christopher Farkas and Shannon Farkas both of New Windsor; six great-grandchildren, Allison, Aleah, Megan, Kendall, Terri Lyn and Abigail Lee; a sister, Jean Morris of Gaithersburg; son-in-law, Meredith Alexander of Winston-Salem, N.C. and daughter-in-law, Linda McElfresh of Mount Airy.

Mrs. McElfresh is preceded in death by daughters, Linda Alexander and Cora Bonita McElfresh; son, Terry McElfresh; and brother, J. Norman Burdette Jr.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Damascus United Methodist Church, 9700 New Church St., Damascus. Interment will be in Damascus cemetery.

The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1025 Connecticut Avenue, N.W. Suite 1005, Washington, D.C. 20036-4104.

Mr. Emmett Hannawald

Emmett Benjamin Hannawald, was born Aug. 10, 1915, at Iuka, Kansas, the son of the late John Lewis and Clara Mable (Rolf) Hannawald. His parents and grandparents were Kansas pioneers. He departed this life at 10:13 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008, at the age of 92 years. He was united in marriage to Dorris L. McWilliams on Aug. 2, 1941.

Mr. Hannawald attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1939. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He worked for the Kansas State Board of Agriculture until February 1942, when he transferred to the Crop Reporting Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He came to the Washington area in 1948. In 1973, he was the recipient of Agriculture's Superior Service Award. At the time of his retirement in 1973, he was Branch Chief for the Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Statistics Branch.

He served 39 months in the Army during World War II in the States and in the Aleutian Islands.

He was a member of the Ashton United Methodist Church.

He loved working in his yard and garden, and then canning and freezing the produce. He did woodworking until his eye sight began to fail and he could no longer see to do it. For many years, he and Dorris square danced and round danced in several clubs in the area.

He is survived by his wife, Dorris; his son, James E. Hannawald and wife, Terry, of Denton; two daughters, Karen S. VanAacken of Silver Spring, and Janice L. Davis of New Market; six grandchildren, Duane Davis and wife, Joanne, Daniel Davis and wife, Patricia, Jason Davis, Matthew Hannawald, Patience Walz and husband, Timothy, Jered Hannawald; and six great-grandchildren; DJ Davis, Joey Davis, Diana Davis, Austin Davis, Raquel Davis, and Ryan Davis.

Memorials may be made to the Ashton United Methodist Church in Ashton.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday Aug. 9, at at Ashton United Methodist Church, 17314 New Hampshire Ave., Ashton, MD 20861.

Mr. Michael Pepper

Funeral services will be held at at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the church, with his pastor the Rev. James A. Coblentz, officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

Memorial donations may be made for the children of Michael and Rebecca Pepper, c/o Pioneer Baptist Church, P.O. Box 355, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mr. Paul Seiser

Paul H. Seiser, age 63, of Middletown, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at his residence. He was the loving husband of Joanne Seiser for 40 years.

Born April 3, 1945, in Cranford, N. J., he was the son of the late Herbert and Florence Seiser.

Paul graduated from Rider University, Lawrenceville, N.J., with a BA in political science. Immediately after graduation he signed up for active duty in the Army. He went to Officers Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Va., and received his commission as second lieutenant. Paul then went through training at Fort Holabird, for Military Intelligence. He and Joanne were married during this brief training period. In January of 1968, Lieutenant Seiser was deployed to Vietnam. On Dec. 26, 1968, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his Meritorious service. he returned to the United States in January of 1970, and was reunited with his wife, and first daughter, Ellen, who was born while he was overseas.

Paul and his family came to Middletown in 1979, while working for Fort Howard Paper Company. He rose to the position of Regional Sales Manager, South Eastern Division. For the past six years he has worked for Home Depot in home services.

In addition to his wife, Joanne; he is also survived by his two daughters, Amy Riley, and husband, Paul, of Mount Airy, and Ellen Lynn Seiser and her fianc?, Marc Carpenter, of Fairfax, Va. Mr. Seiser is the grandfather of three, Katie Nicole, Matthew James, and Nicholas Paul Riley. Also surviving are two cousins, Donald Seiser, who was most devoted as a cousin, and a best friend, and his wife, Helen, and Diane Handerhan, and her husband, Bill.

Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. with a wake service at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Holy Family Catholic Community, 7321 Burkittsville Road, Middletown, MD 21769. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the church. The interment will be at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ cemetery, Middletown, MD. The Father J. Kevin Farmer will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Alfaro family to help in their battle against cancer so that one life lost may be one life saved, care of Maria Alfaro, 502 Partridge Way, Frederick, MD 21703, Hospice of Frederick County, PO Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702-1799, or to Holy Family Catholic Community Building Fund, at the above address.

Mr. Gilbert Fogle Jr.

Mr. Gilbert "Gill" N. Fogle Jr., 58, of Frederick, died Sunday, Aug. 3, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Betty J. (Fogle) Fogle.

Born Nov. 12, 1949, in Boyds, he was a son of the late Gilbert N. Fogle Sr. and Marie E. (Leppo) Fogle.

Mr. Fogle was employed with Suburban Propane for 38 years. He enjoyed dancing with his wife Betty, traveling, gardening (especially tomatoes), and trips to Charles Town and Atlantic City. Gill cherished spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving beside his wife are four children, Charles Gilbert, Kathy Gilbert and fianc?, Lee Ellis, Tammy Stambaugh and husband, David, Carol Burriss and husband, Michael; 11 grandchildren, Barry Wallace, Jimmy and Billy Burriss, Paul, Donnie and Ashley Gilbert, Davie, Sheena and Ariel Stambaugh, Modesta Weedon and Jessica Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Keyonna Dorsey, Amea Dorsey, and an expected great-grandchild; he is also survived by his twin brother, Charles H. Fogle; a brother, Daniel E. Fogle, and two sisters, Shirley A. And Evelyn R. Fogle. He was preceded in death by a brother Joe Leppo.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m Friday, with the Rev. Ed Jordan officiating. Interment in Resthaven Memorial Gardens

Pallbearers will be grandchildren; Paul and Donnie Gilbert, David Stambaugh Jr., Barry Wallace, Billy and Jimmy Burriss, and nephews; Mike Johnson and Robert Cook.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784.

Mr. Lloyd Snoots

Lloyd A. Snoots, 58 years old, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, in Benson, Ariz.

He is survived by his son Lloyd A. Snoots Jr. and wife, Betsy; also, daughter, Krista Murr and husband, Eric of Greencastle; he leaves behind two granddaughters; five grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition, his wife, Rina; and two step-children, also of Benson; one sister, Kaye Deener and husband, Gene; and a brother, Boyd "Buddy" and wife, Debbie; also two uncles and one aunt. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Margaret Snoots.

He was employed at Mack Truck, Firestone, and Massey Ford in Hagerstown, for many years.

Mrs. Mary Johnston

Mrs. Mary Louise McBride Johnston, 81, of Frederick, and formerly of Young Place, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at the Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center. Twice married she was the wife of the late Fred R. Johnston and George W. McBride.

She was born in Frederick, Feb. 13, 1927, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Louise Mullican Zimmerman.

Mrs. Johnston had worked for many years at Seegers Hardware Store and May's Hardware as a clerk in sales. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church and the auxiliary to the Francis Scott Key American Legion.

Surviving her is a brother-in-law, Wilbur McBride and wife, Betty, of Thurmont; and their children; six cousins, Cheryl Mullican, of Frederick, Barbara Mullican, of Palm Springs, Calif., Albert Mullican Jr., and wife, Kay, of Mount Airy, Helen Louise Shipley Garber, of North Olmstead, Ohio, Don Shipley, of Tenn., and Dorothy Jeschke and husband Eric, of Canada.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington, pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick County Humane Society, 5712-D Industry Lane, Frederick, MD 21704, or Calvary United Methodist Church, 133 West Second Street, Frederick, MD 21701, or to the Auxiliary to Citizens Nursing Home, 1900 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21702.

Mr. Charles Fultz

Mr. Charles E. Fultz, 74, of Thurmont, passed away peacefully at home Aug. 4, 2008. He was the husband of Frances I. Fultz, his wife of 44 years.

Born Sept. 1, 1933, in Frederick, he was the son of the late William and Sophia Fultz. He graduated from Frederick High School and served in the U.S. Army in Korea. After his service overseas, he returned to the Frederick area and began his apprenticeship as a plumber. He mastered the trade, and worked for many years until disability forced his retirement.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his brother, Morris Fultz and wife, Wanda; two sons, Charles W. Fultz and wife, Wanda, and David E. Fultz and wife, Deborah; four grandchildren, Haylie Fultz, Denise Hanton and husband, Andy, David Fultz and wife, Julie, and Shaun Fultz; a great-grandchild, Hailey; step-children, Sylvia Matz and John Hailey Jr.; as well as step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his good friend and cousin, Butch Keeney, and his beloved dog, Spike.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N in Frederick. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the Veterans Garden of Honor II at Resthaven. Floral tributes are welcome, and may be delivered to the Chapel Mausoleum.

Ms. Ina Whitley

Ms. Ina M. Whitley, 85, of Arlington, Va., died February 3, 2007.

She was the loving mother of George M. (Phyllis) Whitley Jr. of Vienna, Va.; dear daughter of the late William M. and Lola A. Kline; and the beloved sister of Ruth Staples of Brunswick. She is also survived by two devoted grandchildren, Scott E. (Nadege) Whitley of Chantilly, Va., Kelly W. (Nils) Warga of Ashburn, Va.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Westover Baptist Church.

After retirement, Ina took up oil painting and won several prizes for her artwork.

Friends may call the Arlington Funeral Home, 3109 North Fairfax Dr., Arlington, Va., on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Park Heights cemetery, Brunswick.

Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to Capital Hospice, 6565 Arlington Blvd., Suite 501, Falls Church, VA 22042.

Ms. Claire Cherntet

Ms. Claire Cherntet, 88, of Wall Township, N.J., and formerly of Frederick, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2007, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, N.J.

A devout Catholic, Claire was a devoted mother and grandmother and was the loving wife of her deceased husband, Col. (Ret.) Samuel Chernet, a decorated Air Force veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Claire was born and raised in Orange, and also lived in Germany, New York, Maryland and Honda during her life. She loved to read, travel and was an avid basketball fan. She worked at the Prudential in Newark, N.J. Ms. Chernet was a former resident of Edenton Retirement Community of Frederick.

She was loved by many members of her family and her friends. Surviving her are daughters, Deborah Chernet Kendall and husband Paul of Ijamsville, Jane Berube of Lyndhurst, N.J., and formerly of Damascus and JoAnn Fortier and husband Ken of Manasquan, N.J.; and six grandchildren, Justin and Ryan Berube of Lyndhurst, N.J., James and Cameron Kendall of Ijamsville and Ms. Lauren Fortier of Belmar, N.J.; and Chris Fortier of Manasquan, N.J.

A private graveside ceremony will be held Tuesday at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Claire's name may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the O'Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, N.J.
