February 23, 2001

M. Pearl Gardner of Chester, MD died Friday February 23, 2001 at Corsica Hills Nursing Center in Centreville, MD. She was 95.

Born on February 1, 1906 on Kent Island she was the daughter of the late Augustus Klebo Reamy and Mary Ann Roberta Graham. She attended school in Chester, MD. and worked with her family on their farm until Dec. 24, 1930 when she married Thomas Y. Gardner. Together they worked on the water harvesting the seasonal offerings of the Chesapeake. They had their only child; a son Norman Milburn Garden born October 11, 1935 predeceased them on October 1, 1939. Mrs. Gardner worked for Seldy Grocery Store in Dominion. She would later work for Perfect Garment Factory in Grasonville, MD. and retire from there.

During her retirement she would lend a hand and help her nephew with Britt’s Barber Shop in Chester. She was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, M D.

She is survived by three sisters Elsie Porter of Stevensville, MD.; Elizabeth Haddaway and Edna Britt both of Grasonville, MD. Two brothers Presley Reamy and Charles Reamy both of Stevensville, MD. and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Y. Gardner August 13, 1960 and a sister Irma R. Britt on Sept. 8, 1985.

Funeral Service will be held 11AM Monday February 26, 2001 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Family & friends may call at the funeral home from 3PM to 6PM on Sunday February 25, 2001. Interment will be in Stevensville cemetery in Stevensville, MD.

Family requests that memorial contributions be made to Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department c/o Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 27 Stevensville, MD. 21666.

Alice Mary Grace Low died at Heron Point, Chestertown on February 23, 2001.Mrs. Low had been a resident of Heron Point since June 1991 and previously lived in Silver Spring, MD. She was 81 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas Warren Grace and Mary Lydia Mellish Grace of Vancouver, B.C. Canada. She was predeceased by two brothers Hugh John Grace and Thomas Boyd Grace and by her husband Seth Low. Mrs. Low was born in Vancouver where she received two degrees from the University of British Columbia, a BA in philosophy and a MSW in child welfare. She came to the United States in 1951 and became an American citizen in 1957. She practiced social work in child welfare agencies and juvenile courts in B.C., Oregon and Washington State. She later worked for the U.S. Federal Government as a consultant and social science analyst in the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She was a Charter Member of the National Association of Social Workers.

Mrs. Low was a life long Episcopalian and a member of Emmanuel Church in Chestertown, where she served as registrar from 1992-1995 and was also an Alternate Delegate to the Diocesan Convention in Easton. She was a Volunteer Librarian for fifteen years at the National Cathedral Library and the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington, D.C. Her special interest was music. She played the violin and viola, performing in orchestras and string quartets in all the areas she had lived in. She was a member of the Newark, DE Symphony and the Dover, DE Symphony after she moved to Chestertown. For nine years she was a member of the Midshore Symphony Board and a Committee Member of the Kent County Friends of Chamber Music. She was member of the Friday Morning Music Club in Washington D.C. for many years. At Heron Point, Mrs. Low was a member of the Resident Council for two terms and she was also a member of the Book Club and the Spiritual Life Interest Group.

She is survived by her son Seth Low of Cockeysville, MD, three step daughters, Deborah Low of Wilton, CT, Jacqueline Low of Marathon, FL, and Miriam Quinzy of Ann Arbor, MI three step grand children Ava, Seth, and Stephen and one step great grandson, Shane.

A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Church, Chestertown, MD on Friday, March 2, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. Followed by a reception at Wesley Hall, Heron Point.
Interment will be private.

Dorothy Rada Monroe of Chester River Beach, Grasonville, died at Memorial Hospital at Easton on Friday morning, Feb. 23, 2001. She was 76.

Born on May 17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Sarah Pfarr Rada. After attending school in Baltimore, she married Lester M. Monroe on Sept. 11, 1943. At that time Mr. Monroe was serving with the U.S. Navy Armed Guard in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Monroe, who was a carpenter, died April 20, 1999. In 1958, the Monroes moved from Dundalk to the Eastern Shore and Mrs. Monroe was the caregiver at home for their son David, who had cerebral palsy. David died in 1963.

After her son's death, Mrs. Monroe went to work as a secretary for then attorney John W. Sause Jr. of Centreville, who also owned the Queen Anne's Record Observer, a weekly newspaper in Centreville. She eventually became office manager for the newspaper and continued in that position when the newspaper was purchased by Chesapeake Publishing Corp. in 1982. Even after her formal retirement from the Record Observer in September 1994, she continued to work part-time at the Record Observer. She also came in to train new office staff at the Record Observer, the Bay Times in Stevensville, and The Star Democrat in Easton, and was a substitute newsroom typist at The Star Democrat until late last year. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Chester River Beach Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7464, Grasonville.

Mrs. Monroe is survived by 18 nieces and nephews, and several cousins. Her brothers, William, George, and Henry Rada, and her sisters, Sue Stringer, Marie Rada, and Mary Thomas, are deceased.

Funeral services are at Old Wye Episcopal Church in Wye Mills at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26. Visitation is at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Fanny Roark Willis of Galena, Maryland died on February 23, 2001 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 90.

Born in Flatwoods, Kentucky on June 6, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Della LeMaster Roark. Mrs. Willis moved to Baltimore, Maryland from Kentucky to live with her sister. There she met Wm. Maxwell Willis; they were married in July of 1959.

Mrs. Willis worked with Genesco Company for several years and retired in the mid 1960's. Upon her husbands retirement they moved to Galena, Md. There she was a member of the Busy Bee's Senior Group. Mrs. Willis was also a member of Kennedyville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. Her husband, the late Wm. Maxwell Willis predeceased her on August 15, 1999.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews: Dale, Paul, Garold, Lowell, and Tommy Roark, Loella Carter, Mary Salyers, Danny Brainard, Roy Brainard, Bobby Justice, Harry Justice, Reba Della Roush, Ann Brown, Becky Stephens, Mary Robinson, and Norma Barker all of Flatwoods and Grayson, Kentucky. She is also survived by several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday February 27, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Chester cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Galena Vol. Fire Department Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 189 Galena, Maryland 21635 or Kennedyville United Methodist Church 11979 Augustine Herman Hwy. Kennedyville, Md. 21645.

February 22, 2001

Reba T. Carroll of Kennedyville, Md. died on Thursday February 22,2001 in the Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville, Md. of heart failure. She was 85.

Mrs. Carroll was born in Queen Anne's County MD. the daughter of the late George and Maude Wiggens Squares. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Carroll was a very active member of the Kennedyville United Methodist Church, Kennedyville, Md. She was also a member of the Kennedyville Vol. Fire Co. ladies Aux. And the Kennedyville Homemakers Club. Mrs. Carroll enjoyed gardening, and in her early years she enjoyed crafts and making Afghans for each of her immediate family members. Mrs. Carroll also served as President of the William Penn High School Band Boosters, and served as the Vice President of their P.T.A. Mrs. Carroll loved spending time with her family epically her grandchildren and great grandchildren. For 25yrs. She spent her summers with her 2 sisters in Ocean City, Md. at the Hotel Mayflower.

Mrs. Carroll is survived 2- daughters Vera C. Eliason of Chestertown, Md. and Nancy C. Toulson of Newark, De. 1- sister Evelyn S. Hopkins of Kennedyville, Md. 7- Grandchildren and 9- great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday February 26, 2001 at 11am from the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. where friends and family may call on Sunday afternoon from 5-7pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Crumpton cemetery, Crumpton, Md.

Arthur K. Legg Jr. of Lewes De. died on Thursday February 22nd. 2001 in the Beebe Hospital, Lewes, De. of heart failure. He was 70.

Mr. Legg was born in Chestertown, Md. the son of the late Arthur and Violet LeCates Legg Sr. Mr. Legg was an associate Scientist for the DuPont Co. in Wilmington, De. working at the experimental station and retiring in 1993.

Mr. Legg was a former member of the Chestertown Vol. Fire Co., Chestertown, Md. He also served in the Maryland National Guard in Chestertown for nine years. Mr. Legg was a former member of the Mill Creek Lions Club, and was currently serving his second term as President of the Love Creek Woods Home Owners Assoc. Mr. Legg enjoyed golf, surf fishing and loved the Baltimore Orioles. He was an avid Jeff Gordon fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR events. Mr. Legg also enjoyed oil painting and shared his work with many family members.

Mr. Legg is survived by his wife of 50yrs. Florence M. "Toddi" Legg, 1- son, Arthur K. Legg III and his wife Candy of Newark, De. 2- daughters, Terry L. Feret and her husband Tom of Laurel, De. and Ellen Faries and her husband Dave of Middletown, De. 1- Sister, Peggy Schauber Davis of Chestertown, Md. and 5- grandchildren. In addition to his parents Mr. Legg was predeceased by 1- brother James V. Legg.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday February 26th. At 2 pm. From the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where friends and family may call Sunday afternoon from 5-7pm.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society Eastern Shore Chapter, 1358 Parsons Rd. Salisbury, Md. 21801 Interment will follow service in the Chester cemetery, Chestertown, Md.

February 21, 2001

James Robert "Bobby" Scoon of Rock Hall, Maryland died on February 21, 2001 at his home. He was 70.

Born in Rock Hall, Md. on March 28, 1924 he was the son of the late J. Walter and Macy Joiner Scoon. Mr. Scoon served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Philippines and was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his discharge he returned to Rock Hall, Md. and owned and operated the Rock Hall Ice Company until his retirement in 1983.

He was married to Arline McGinnis in 1948; she predeceased him October 17, 1999. Mr. Scoon served on Peoples Bank Board of Directors, as Mayor of Rock Hall during the late 1950's, and was a fifty-year member of Chester Lodge #115 in Chestertown, Md. He was also a 55-year member Sgt. Preston Ashley American Legion Post #228. He and his wife both enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by a brother J. Walter Scoon, Jr. of Chestertown, Md. and a sister Esther Hillyer of Chestertown, Md. along with a nephew Jeffrey Hill of Rock Hall, Md. Memorial services will be held on Friday February 23, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Route #20 Rock Hall, Md. where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service (1:00-2:00). Interment will be in Wesley Chapel cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Rock Hall Vol. Fire Department P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.
