Mrs. Hazel Mullinix

Mrs. Hazel M. Mullinix, 78, of Calliope Court, Mount Airy, and a former resident of Sunshine, died Friday, February 2, 2007, at Carroll County Medical Center, Westminster. She was the wife of the late Norman D. Mullinix.

Born October 6, 1928, in Hyattsville, she was a daughter of the late John and Louise Seek Gordon.

She was an accomplished quilter and an active member of the Mount Airy Senior Center and the 55+ Club. Hazel will be remembered as a gardening enthusiast and an avid sports fan, with a soft spot for the Washington Redskins.

She was the devoted mother of Greg Mullinix of Lisbon, Glenn Mullinix of Mount Airy and Diana Ward of Annapolis and their spouses, Barbara, Barbara and Buck. She was the proud grandmother of Keven, Bobby, Scott, Brian, Matt, Zachary, Mark, Morgan, Michael, Brad, Sharon and Andrea; great-grandmother of Riley, Chanse and Cayden; and sister of Evelyn Mullinix, Russell Gordon, Beverly Green, Donald Gordon and Dorothy Rosensteel.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Gordon Jr.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Carmel cemetery, Sunshine.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, 1211 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Suite 501, Washington, DC 20036.

Mr. Robert Williams Sr.

Mr. Robert "Gene" E. Williams Sr., 63, of Frederick, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Homewood at Crumland Farms.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Phyllis (Simms) Williams.

Born on September 12, 1943, in Mount Airy, he was a son of the late Robert Hammond and Minnie Williams.

Mr. Williams was a graduate of Lincoln High School. He was employed in construction with HMF Paving, retiring after 14 years of service.

Surviving, besides his wife, are five children, Lisa Williams, Robert Williams Jr. and wife Robin, Charles, Kim and Marcel Williams, all of Frederick; three grandchildren, Ty'Lisa, Robert III and Sanaa (Nana); three step-grandchildren; Jeremy, Kenneth and Tykia, all of Frederick; two brothers, Leon Tyler and wife Mary and Richard Tyler and wife Bernice, all of Frederick; seven sisters, Minnie Hines and husband Len of Westminster, Betty Gennes and husband Larry of Gaithersburg, Irene Byrd and husband Mark of Richmond, Ind., Beverly Prather of Rockville, Sylvia M. Tyler-Dotson of Mount Airy, Deloris Hammond of Westminster and Rosemary Kelly of Westminster; and a step-brother, Clifton Bowins of Frederick.

Gene will also be remembered by his favorite niece, Latressa Dotson; his friends, Ronald Dorsey, Ronald Butler, Mike Lyles, James Thompson and the Ells family; and several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hammond.

Family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Robert H. Walters officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Edwin A. Thomas

Mr. Edwin A. Thomas, 66, died in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. His death was attributed to the long-term effects of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) sensitivity.

Mr. Thomas was born in Silver Spring, and spent much of his childhood and work career in the Washington, D.C. area. He and his wife, Kay, currently resided in Fayetteville, Pa.

A 1958 graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Mr. Thomas found his subsequent college studies at the University of Maryland, College Park interrupted during the Berlin crisis of 1960 when his army reserve unit, the 800th Military Police Company of Rockville, activated. He spent an additional year of active duty at Fort Chaffee, Ark., while President Kennedy increased the draft. Many of those new recruits received their basic training at Fort Chaffee. He left the Army Reserve in 1964 with the rank of Staff Sergeant E-6.

Mr. Thomas was a 1966 graduate from the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and 13-year retiree from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. As an employee with the USDA, he had assignments in Washington, D.C., Beltsville, Frederick and Hyattsville. His last assignment was with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) as chief staff officer for strategic planning and program evaluation. He considered his most significant career achievement the establishment of the APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine Professional Development Center in Frederick in 1979. He received USDA's second highest honorary award for the achievement in 1981.

Mr. Thomas was an active supporter of University of Maryland athletics and served for two years as president of the football booster group, Maryland Gridiron Network.

In recent years, Mr. Thomas became a student and practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism. He participated in many Insight Meditation Community of Washington (IMCW) retreats in and around the Washington area.

Mr. Thomas was an avid photographer. His favorite media was black and white photography of group photos of family and friends.

Ed is survived by his wife of 15 years, Kay Barcklow Thomas; his daughter, Courtenay Thomas Page and husband Scott of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; his stepdaughter, Amy Kristin Mojadidi and husband Mawdood of Burke, Va.; his stepson, Jason Michael Heilemann and wife Rose of Bel Air; five grandchildren, Madison Courtenay Page, Carter Thomas Page, Morgan Alexandra Page, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Jared Matthew and Olivia Rose Heilemann of Bel Air; his sister, Jeannette Thomas McNair of Orlando, Fla.; his brothers-in-law, Tom McNair of Orlando, Fla., William A. Barcklow of Roslyn, Pa., Ross R. Barcklow of Greeley, Colo.; dearest of friends, Nate and Kathy Lehman of Chambersburg, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews and friends he cherished dearly.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 at the APHIS Plant Protection and Quarentine Professional Development Center, Suite 100, 69 Thomas Johnson Drive, Frederick.

Mrs. Barbara Ann Slone

Mrs. Barbara Ann Slone, 67, died Saturday, February 3, 2007, at her home in Damascus. She was the wife of George A. Slone.

Born March 18, 1939, in Baltimore, she was a daughter of the late Calvin Francis Edward and Mildred Hess Murphy.

Barbara enjoyed softball. She loved her dogs and her home in West Virginia.

Surviving besides her husband are four loving children, Nick Chopas of Germantown, Scott Chopas of Damascus, Barbara Bittner and Kelli Costello, both of West Virginia.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Molesworth-Williams P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home. Interment will be in All Souls cemetery, Germantown.

Mrs. Marion Cole

Mrs. Marion Waters Cole, 76, of Union Bridge and formerly of Waynesville, Ga., died Friday, February 2, 2007, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law after a brief illness.

She was born October 15, 1930, a native of Coffee County, Ga., and moved to Maryland in 2005. Mrs. Cole was a member of Zion Primitive Baptist Church, Brunswick, Ga. She was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Robert Stevens; granddaughter, Heather Stevens; great-granddaughter, Molly Stevens, all of Union Bridge; niece, Debby Ferrell of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Judy Edgy and Georgia Rainey of Brunswick, Ga.; son, Alton Cole of Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

A viewing will be held at McIver's Funeral Home in Douglas, Ga. on Monday, Feb. 5, followed by a graveside service and interment at Meeks cemetery, Nicholls, Ga.

Mr. John Giles Jr.

Mr. John Sydnor Giles Jr., 77, of Frederick, died Monday, January 29, 2007, at Perry Point Veterans Center, Perry Point.

Born November 22, 1929, in New York, he was the son of the late John Sydnor and Mary Elizabeth Giles.

Mr. Sydnor was a retired Sergeant First Class, serving in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, receiving the Bronze Star with One Oak Leaf Cluster, First Oak Leaf to Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by cousins, Margaret H. Brown of Knoxville and Ethel Spencer of Philadelphia, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at the John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. The Rev. Jonathan Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the service on Monday. Interment with full military honors will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Arlington National cemetery.

Mr. Joseph Hackett

Mr. Joseph L. Hackett, 70, of Walkersville, died on Friday, February 2, 2007, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was husband of Phyllis A. Boice Hackett, his wife of 42 years.

Born on January 11, 1937, in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late John R. and Alice P. Parker Hackett. Joseph was a microbiologist and clinical pathologist for the Food and Drug Administration. He was a graduate of Ohio State University earning a B.S. in medical technology, masters in microbiology and a Ph.D. in clinical pathology. Mr. Hackett was a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the American Board of Bioanalysis. Joseph was an active member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council. He enjoyed dominoes, reading, gardening, genealogy, Civil War reenactments and wine making. Joseph was an accomplished magician and a member of the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians

Surviving, in addition to his wife are three daughters, Amy Morris and husband Brett of West Virginia, Beth Iluz and husband Yaniv of New York and Susan Hackett of Walkersville; a son, Ron Hackett of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Wyatt Morris, Jared Morris, Callie Morris, Laurel Morris, Logan Morris and Lilly Morris; a sister, Pat Mehl and husband Mike of Middleton, Ohio; and a brother-in-law, William Boice and wife Gail of Pittsburgh.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, with the Rev. Richard Murphy as Celebrant.

Interment will take place in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mrs. Wanda Majernik

Mrs. Wanda Marie Majernik, 45, of Mount Airy died on Thursday, February 1, 2007, at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C. She was the wife of David M. Majernik, her husband of more than 20 years.

Born on May 10, 1961, in Rosedale, she was the daughter of Martha Bennett Bekkely of Rosedale and the late Magnus Bekkely. She was an electrical engineer working for a contractor serving the U.S. government. Mrs. Majernik was a graduate of Capitol College and Johns Hopkins University. She was an assistant Girl Scout Leader and was very active in the activities of her children.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother, are a daughter, Stephanie Majernik; a son, Kevin Majernik, both at home; and two sisters, Greta Gay and husband Tom of Joppa and Sharon Lindner of Bel Air.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Mount Airy Baptist Church, 710 N. Main St., Mount Airy with her pastor Dr. Michael L. Trammell officiating.

Interment will be private.

Mrs. Marian Tuttle

Mrs. Marian Veronica Lafayette Nash Tuttle, 88, formerly of Silver Spring and Boonsboro, died on Saturday, February 3, 2007, at her home in Adamstown. She was the wife of the late Dr. Lewis Carlton Tuttle Jr., who died November 29, 1998.

Born in Dodgeville, Wis., on October 28, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Harry Lafayette and Selena Ryan Lafayette Nash. She was stepdaughter to the late Lewis Nash.

Mrs. Tuttle had been employed for several years at Gimble's Department Store as a buyer for ladies apparel. She was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Soaring Society. (Gliders)

Surviving are her children, Thomas Tuttle and wife Janette of Fort Myers, Fla., Judith A. Hampson and husband Howard of Adamstown and Marcia Frank and husband James of Hollywood, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She will also be remembered by a special friend, Hope Howard, of Frederick.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Carlotta Keenan.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 5, 2007, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 6, at 10 a.m., from the funeral home. The Rev. Lawrence K. Frazier, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mrs. Marion Wheeler

Mrs. Marion Agnes Wheeler, 48, of Frederick died on Friday, February 2, 2007, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Jerome C. Wheeler Sr., her husband of 21 years.

Born on May 14, 1958, in Olney, she was a daughter of Betty Ruth Bladen Mills of Greencastle, Pa., and the late Morris Calvin Mills. Mrs. Wheeler was a homemaker. She was a dedicated wife and mother and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother are two children, Jerome C. Wheeler Jr. and Jennifer M. Wheeler, both of Frederick; a brother, George W. Mills and wife Missy of Greencastle; and two sisters, Mary M. Merritt and husband Patrick of Beltsville and Betty M. Viverette of Boonsboro; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tim May officiating.

Interment will take place in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.
