Mrs. Rosemary Miller

Mrs. Rosemary Miller, 68, of Frederick, passed away Friday, January 19, 2007, at her winter home in Sebring, Fla.

She was the loving wife of Frank T. Miller Jr. for 48 years. They were married on Feb. 14, 1958.

Mrs. Miller was born June 22, 1938, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late William and Anne Santangelo Oden.

She was a homemaker and loving mother. She was a graduate of St. John's Literary Institute. She retired from AT&T; as a telephone operator in 1996.

Mrs. Miller enjoyed knitting, crocheting, doing puzzles and all types of crafts since her retirement. She also enjoyed going to yard sales and flea markets with her husband. They enjoyed their time together and friends at their winter home in Sebring, Fla., as well. She was a member of St. Joseph on Carrollton Manor Catholic Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Frank T. Miller III and wife Cindee of Adamstown and Anthony W. Miller and wife Monica of Hagerstown; one grandson, Tommy Miller and wife Bailey of Jacksonville, Fla.; step-grandson, Shane Miller; step-granddaughter, Jamie Miller of Adamstown; two brothers, Richard Oden of Falls Church, Va., and James Odem of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Kay Mullican of Mount Airy, Sylvia Hammond of Thurmont and Paula Grove of Chester, Va.; numerous special nieces, nephews and close friends.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the St. Joseph on Carrollton Manor Building Fund, P.O. Box 33, Buckeystown, MD 21717.

Mr. Glenn Reifsnider

Mr. Glenn William Reifsnider, 80, of Keymar, died Monday, January 29, 2007, at Lorien Taneytown in Taneytown, as a result of a stroke.

Born January 14, 1927, in Keymar, he was the son of the late Isaiah W. and Alice Marie Rinehart Reifsnider. He was the husband of C. Georgette Ashbaugh Reifsnider, his wife of 61 years.

He began dairy farming in 1943, after his father died. He was president of the Eastern Milk Co-op for many years. He retired from farming in 2000 and moved to Keysville.

He was a very active member of his church. He served on numerous committees and in the choir throughout his life membership at Grace United Church of Christ, Taneytown.

He enjoyed farming, helping others and visiting and talking with his friends and family.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, G. Wayne Reifsnider and friend Cathy Gesell, Douglas E. Reifsnider and wife Cindy; daughter, Sheila D. Robertson and husband Tom, all of Keymar; grandchildren, Clinton Reifsnider, Lara Stambaugh, Rhiannon Robertson, Heidi Robertson and Brennan Robertson; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Stambaugh, Grace Stambaugh and Kayla Reifsnider; brother, Roger Reifsnider of Keymar; and sisters, Alice Crabbs of Westminster and Doris Grimes of Keymar.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Reifsnider.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Grace United Church of Christ, 49 West Baltimore Street, Taneytown. His pastor, the Rev. Steven M. Ostendorf-Snell, will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Skiles Funeral Home, 136 East Baltimore Street, Taneytown, and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace United Church of Christ Repair Fund, 49 West Baltimore Street, Taneytown, MD 21787.

Mrs. Lillie Swartz

Mrs. Lillie Louise Swartz, 79, of Frederick, died suddenly early Saturday afternoon, January 27, 2007, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, Frederick. She was the wife of the late James Howard Swartz Sr., who preceded her in death on January 28, 1968.

Born September 7, 1927, in Pearl, she was the only child of the late Reuben Willard and Ida Beatrice Cromwell Hall.

She was a graduate of Frederick High School.

Though Louise worked for Price Electric and Woolco, she may best be remembered from Carmack Jay's Grocery Store, formerly on N. Market St., Frederick.

Mrs. Swartz is survived by children, Janis S. Martell and husband Louis and James H. Swartz Jr. and wife Arlene, all of Frederick; grandchildren, Kevin H. Swartz Sr. and wife Elizabeth of Greenville, N.C., and Stephanie Fogle and husband Mark of Hagerstown; and great-grandchildren, Kevin H. Jr. and Haley M. Swartz. She will also be remembered by her beloved and cherished cat, Chrissy.

Besides her husband and parents, Louise was preceded in death by a grandson, Kurt David Martell.

Arrangements are being handled by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home P.A., Frederick. Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Louise was very dedicated to the care and upkeep of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Yard. Not only did she research and write about many of the individuals interred in the church yard, but also used her own funds to aide with the maintenance. Therefore, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Treasurer, MCUMC cemetery Fund, in care of Sharla Worley, Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, 9411 Baltimore Rd., Frederick, MD 21704. These funds will be used in the continued care of the church yard.

Mrs. Kathleen Thorpe

Mrs. Kathleen Mary Thorpe, 74, of Waynesboro Pike, Emmitsburg, died Sunday, January 28, 2007, at her home.

Born July 8, 1932, in Lyndhurst, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Francis and Eleanor Maquire. She was the wife of the late Malcolm Clifford Thorpe, who died in 1984.

Mrs. Thorpe had worked as a secretary in research and development at Fort Detrick in Frederick. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Emmitsburg.

Surviving is her son, Michael F. Thorpe and fiancˇ Tammy Yerka of Smithsburg; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen M. and Harry Fogle of Waynesboro, Pa.; grandchildren, Miranda Poole, Cassandra Rose Fogle, Isaac Fogle, Megan Fogle, Jacob Fogle and Shane Yerka; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, the Rev. Francis H. Maguire and John J. Maguire; and by a sister, Mary Burns.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Emmitsburg, with the Rev. Vincent J. O'Malley as celebrant. Inurnment will be in New St. Joseph's cemetery, Emmitsburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Skiles Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m.

Mrs. Anna Travis

Mrs. Anna Lois Travis, 89, of Jefferson, died Monday, Jan. 29, at Homewood at Crumland Farms, Frederick. She was the wife of the late Arthur Romer Travis.

Born in Manassas, Va., on September 26, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Emma Pearson Ennis.

She was a member of the Gapland Christian Church.

She is survived by five children, Romer Travis of Hagerstown, Gerald L. Travis Sr. of Headwaters, Va., Lois Hackley of Myersville, James L. Travis of Smithsburg and Helen Colburn of Frederick; one brother, Neal Ennis of Mount Airy; 32 grandchildren; 39 great-great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three children, Cecil Travis, Franklin Travis and Richard Travis; and a brother, Robert Ennis.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2. from the Gapland Christian Church. The Rev. Jimmy Jones and the Rev. James Mueller will officiate. Interment will be made in the Locust Valley Bible Church cemetery, Middletown.

Pallbearers will be James Travis, Mark McCully, John Hackley, Jaime Hackley, Eddie Travis and Nathan Shakleford.

Mr. Austin Wiles

Mr. Austin C. J. Wiles, 89, formerly of Middletown, died Sunday, January 28, at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home, Boonsboro. He was the husband of Ruth N. Grossnickle Wiles, who died Oct. 31, 2004.

Born March 22, 1917, near Middlepoint, he was a son of the late Russell P. (Pete) and Letha Grossnickel Wiles.

Mr. Wiles was a lifelong farmer, farming in the Ballenger Creek area and Middletown area until his health declined. He was one of the founding farmers of Capitol milk. He loved attending farm sales and auctions and was an avid supporter of the Frederick 4-H programs and the Heifer Project International. He was a lifetime member of the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville.

He is survived by his children, Phyllis J. Agent of Baltimore, Charles A . Wiles and wife Martha of Boonsboro, Wayne L. Wiles and wife Frances of Buckeystown, and Robert A. Wiles and wife Claire of Alexandria, Va.; two granddaughters; six grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. He was the oldest of nine children, all of whom survive him: Doris Grossnickle and Pauline Grossnickle of Walkersville, Marie Harshman of Frederick, Janice Hawkins of Braddock Heights, Regean Fogle of Hagerstown, Yvonne Georg of Brunswick, Russell P. Wiles Jr. of Wirtz, Va., and Thomas Wiles of Middletown. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, from the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, near Ellerton. The pastors, Tim and Donna Ritchey Martin, will officiate. Interment will be made in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Memorial donations may be made to Heifer Project International c/o Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 575, Myersville, MD 21773.

Pallbearers are all grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Abbey Wiles, Melissa Wiles, Ashley Wiles, Austin Wiles, Brad Wiles, Greg Wiles, Jeff Wiles and Ryan Wiles.

Mrs. Jacqueline Goertemiller

Mrs. Jacqueline Palmer Goertemiller, 73, died Saturday, January 27, 2007, in Frederick. She was the wife of Benjamin R. Goertemiller of 55 years of marriage.

Born Nov. 18, 1933, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Evelyn Dell Palmer.

Mrs. Goertemiller was a graduate of Catonsville High School, class of 1951, and attended the Western Maryland College. She was a communicant of St. Timothy's Church, served on the alter guild and was chairwoman of the Woman's Auxiliary. She was also a communicant of St. John's Church, Worthington Valley, and served on the alter guild of the church.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Goertemiller is survived by her sons, Timothy R. and wife Jenny of Trappe and Stephen G. and wife Anita of Baltimore; daughters, Susan Byrne and husband Timothy of Frederick, Kristen Porter and husband Karl of Westminster and Rebecca Snell and husband David R. of Libertytown; one sister, Janis Dishman and husband Wayne of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Goertemiller was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Palmer Crook.

Visitation with family will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Keeney and Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mr. David Grizzle

Mr. David Randall "Randy" Grizzle, " 55, a resident of Point of Rocks, died Friday, January 26, 2007, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Kim Clarke Grizzle.

Born September 16, 1951, in Wheeling, W.Va., Mr. Grizzle was a son of Heyward H. and Dora Elizabeth Young Grizzle of Wellsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Grizzle had served with the United States Navy from January 1970 until his discharge in January 1976.

He had worked as a cruise director of passenger ships for a number of years, sold real estate for I Sell House.com and at the time of his death was employed by the United States Postal Service.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is one daughter, Sophie McKenna Grizzle, at home; one brother, Dennis Heyward Grizzle and wife JoAnn of Frederick; two sisters, Rebecca Kay Lemasters and husband Harley and Kimberly Elizabeth Eames and husband James, all of Wellsburg, W.Va.; and eight nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. at the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Keeney and Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Randy Grizzle Memorial, in care of P.O. Box 747, Frederick, MD 21705.

Mrs. Betty Hurst

Mrs. Betty J. Hurst, 91, of Damascus, died Saturday, January 27, 2007, at Rockville Nursing Home. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Dudley Hurst, her husband of 72 years.

Born August 11, 1915, in Larimer, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William George Davis Sr. and the late Annie Radford Davis Nield.

Betty was a 1933 graduate of Norwin High School. She was a member of Manor Presbyterian Church in Manor, Pa. Betty was a homemaker and an active volunteer in her church and community. She also served as a Girl Scout leader for many years.

Betty is survived by two daughters, Donna Hurst Ogg and husband Alvin of Lewistown, N.Y., and Linda Hurst New and husband Rowland of Germantown; five grandchildren, Diane Johnson and husband Mark, Cynthia Kline and husband Michael, Krista Romagnoli and husband Joseph, R. Joseph New and wife Stephanie, Daniel New and wife Paula; 10 great-grandchildren, Stephen and Kaitlyn Johnson, Cole Kline, Sarah, Hannah and Joseph Romagnoli, Jordan Pitchford, Emma, Gressa and Wyatt New; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by a daughter, Neila Hurst Sloane; a brother, William G. Davis Jr.; and a sister, Anne M. Brinkos.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Molesworth-Williams P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Rd., Damascus, MD 20872.

Funeral services will be at Rodgers E.J. Funeral Home, Manor, Pa., on Friday, Feb. 2, and interment will be held at Irwin Union cemetery, Irwin, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Mrs. Loretta Dobbins

Mrs. Loretta Mayes Dobbins, 46, of Rockingham, N.C., and formerly of Mount Airy, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at her home in North Carolina.

She was the spouse of Michael Dobbins.

Mrs. Dobbins was born April 30, 1960, in Frederick, the daughter of the late John and Ressie Jefferson Mayes. She was a homemaker and loving mother, and a graduate of South Carroll High School. She attended Brandywine College.

Mrs. Dobbins enjoyed gardening, cooking and canning as well as motorcycle rides with her husband and partying with her sister and brother. She was a member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are son, Michael P. Evans of Shallotte, N.C.; daughter, Jessica Evans of North Carolina; brother, John Mayes of Houston, Texas; and four sisters, Charlotte J. Cassini of Boonsboro, Patricia Smesler of Union Bridge, Vickie S. Leahy of Mount Airy and Lisa J. Tompkins of Dravosburg, Pa. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas C. Mayes.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A. 1212 W. Old Liberty Road Winfield, with the Rev. Wallace Lusk officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Independent Baptist Church cemetery, Mount Airy. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of service at noon.
