Mrs. Bertha Miller

Bertha E. "Bert" Miller, 91, of Jefferson, died Aug. 7, 2008. She was the wife of the late George W. "Bill" Miller.

Born Aug. 5, 1917 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Harry Blanchard and Emma Alverta (Woods) Dukehart Sr.

Formerly of Westminster, Manchester, Freeland and Street, Mrs. Miller was a dedicated homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She was a former member of North Harford Baptist Church, Jarrettsville, where she sang in the choir, and was a member of AARP. Bert was very proud that all five of her children served their country in the United States Armed Forces.

Mrs. Miller is survived by three children, Samuel E. Miller and his wife, Mary of Jefferson, Shirley A. Miller and her partner, Kent Perry of Costa Rica, and George R. Miller and his wife, Michelle of Natick, Mass.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many special friends. She was preceded in death by two sons, W. Robert "Bobby" Miller and Donald L. Miller; two brothers, Harry B. Dukehart Jr. and William R. Dukehart; and a sister, Ruth V. Dukehart.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the J. J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 Second St., New Freedom, Pa., with Rev. Mark E. Fair officiating. Viewings will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment in Middletown cemetery, Freeland, will follow the service.

Mrs. Joan Smith

Joan Gussie Whiten Smith entered into eternal rest Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at the Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy.

Born April 24, 1934 in Sunnyside, she was the daughter if the late James L. R. Whiten and Gussie M. Harris Whiten. She was the wife of the late John Frances (Smikey) Smith.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1952, where she served as national president of Future Homemakers of America. She also attended the University of Maryland at Princess Anne where she continued as national president of Future Homemakers of America.

Joan worked for many years at the National Institutes of Health, Price Electric Company and at Fort Detrick.

She was an avid reader, accomplished pianist and loved to solve crossword puzzles.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sisters, Micleta Alfernia Dailey and Helen J. Tyler; brothers, James H. Whiten and Larry L.M. Whiten and wife, Phyllis, all of Frederick. She is also survived by several devoted nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and close friends.

She will always be remembered for her bright smile and her sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where the family will be present to receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Rev. LaDelel Feemster will officiate.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be may to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Shirley Tregoning

Mrs. Shirley Anna Louise Tregoning, 74, of Westminster, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at Shepherds Glen, Union Bridge, following an extended illness with Alzheimers.

Born Sept. 27, 1933, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Ethel Jones Stambaugh. She was the wife of Maurice T. Tregoning Sr., with whom she would have celebrated their 58th anniversary on Monday, Aug. 18.

Mrs. Tregoning was currently a member of Mount Union Lutheran Church and was very dedicated to volunteering at numerous churches throughout her life. She was a homemaker, always taking care of her family. She enjoyed flowers, bird watching and was a nature lover.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Jay John of Fallston; sons and daughter-in-law, Maurice Tregoning Jr. of Hanover, Pa., and Keith and Paula Tregoning of White Plains; grandchildren, Ryan John and wife, Shelby, Amanda Bryson and husband, Bill Jr., Elizabeth Tregoning, Eric Tregoning, Christopher Tregoning and wife, Kristen, Erin Tregoning, Katie Tregoning and fianc?, Daniel Latimer, and Maggie Tregoning; five great-grandchildren, Grace, Nora and Derek John, Cade Bryson and Cayden Latimer; sister, Mary Keyser of Union Bridge; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by brother, Kenneth E. Stambaugh in 1988; and sisters, Virginia Smith in 1999 and Thelma Rowe in 2002.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, with the Rev. Richard L. Michael, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Uniontown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, Aug. 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Union Lutheran Church, c/o Claude P. Bohn, P.O. Box 1060, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Mr. Paul J. McHenry

Mr. Paul J. McHenry, 63, of Hagerstown, passed away unexpectedly at his home.

Born July 6, 1945, in Trenton, N.J., he was the son of the late Dr. J. Bernard and Neda McClellan.

Paul attended Frederick High School, and worked several jobs before taking a position with Weis Markets. He became a manager and worked at Weis for 35 years, before illness forced his retirement. Paul loved to shoot pool and play cards, and he especially loved the game of chess.

He is survived by two brothers, Robert J. McHenry and special friend, Julie, and John McClellan and wife, Pam; eight children, Jerry Lee McHenry and wife, Brenda Stull, Ronnie Lee McHenry and wife, Carol Adams, Terry Lee McHenry, Dawn Michelle Summers and husband, Matthew, Angie Harris and husband, Wayne, Lynn Roberts, Edie Nichols and husband, Dean, and Kristi Hildebrand; and twelve grandchildren.

Friends may gather from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N. in Frederick, where a memorial service will begin at 2 p.m.

John Nelson Balch Jr.

John Nelson Balch Jr., 77, died suddenly and peacefully Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in Frederick. He was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Crossville, Tenn., to the late Josephine and John N. Balch.

John donated his remains to George Washington University. We are honoring his wish that no service be held.

He is survived by his wife, Erma; children, Joan K. Balch of Washington, D.C., Susan N. Balch of Franklin, Canada and John N. Balch III of California; grandchildren, Salem MacLean and Olathe Clark; great-grandchild, Cosima; and several nieces. He is survived by sister, Martha Jo Potts of Lake Junaluska, N.C.; and brother, William H. Balch of Knoxville, Tenn.

He retired from the federal government mapping service. John was active in his community. He is loved and missed by many.

Mr. George Thompson Jr.

George R. Thompson Jr., (Tubby), from Newport News, Va., formerly from Frederick County, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at 7:25 p.m. at his step-daughter, Renee Weston's home.

Born Sept. 10, 1934, in Frederick, he was the son of the late George R. Thompson Sr. and Helen Thompson Barber.

Mr. Thompson is survived by seven children, George (Tubby) Thompson III of Thurmont, Stewart Thompson of Thurmont, Bruce Thompson of Monrovia, Cheryl Horman of Hagerstown, Ronald Thompson of Hedgesville, W.Va., Kim Schaub of Belcamp and Stacey Smith of Jefferson; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol Bower; and his brothers, John and Al Thompson; aunt Tiny Gross and aunt Lee May, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Know by his friends and family as "Tubby", he most recently worked at Walmart in Williamsburg, Va. Formally he owned Thompson Body and Paint Shop located in Middletown, then Frederick.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main Street, Middletown, MD 21769. Interment in Middletown Lutheran Church cemetery will follow the service.Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at the funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21705.

Mr. Joseph Gerard Kramer

Joseph Gerard Kramer, 86, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Ilchester, and was the son of the late Henry Joseph Kramer and Gertrude Marie Hood Kramer.

He was of the Catholic faith. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Jackson-Perks Post No. 200, Charles Town.

He is survived by his son, Mark J. Kramer and wife, Wanda, of Harpers Ferry; one sister, Sister Gertrude Marie Kramer, of Baltimore, and two grandchildren, Jessie and Amanda Kramer, of Harpers Ferry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Mae Gross Kramer in 2006; two sisters, Mary Lansinger and Theresa Schard; and one brother, William Kramer.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Loudon Park cemetery, 3620 Wilkens Avenue, Baltimore.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, at the Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, U.S. 340 at Halltown Road, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry.

Mrs. M. Grace Grove

M. Grace Grove, 76, of Frederick, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at her home after many years of poor health. She was the wife of the late William D. Grove, who passed away in 1976.

Born March 8, 1932, in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Nellie Hildebrand Rothenhoefer.

Mrs. Grove grew up in the Frederick area and after getting married , she and her husband moved to Cumberland in 1961, and raised her family.

Mrs. Grove did a great deal of volunteer work and later worked in real estate. She returned home to Frederick in 1988.

Grace was best remembered by her family as a wonderful seamstress, enjoyed gardening, reading and baking. Known as "Grammy" and "Ginna" by her grandchildren. She said "her children and grand children were her life." She worked the daily crossword puzzle, (always in ink), and her favorite food was crab cakes and she never turned down a slice of lemon meringue pie.

Mrs. Grove is survived by her daughters, Alison Bratun and husband, Joseph, of Washington; and Christina Kallio of Westerville, Ohio; her grand children, Courtney and Lindsey Bratun and Madison and Davis Kallio; and her sisters, Ida Marie Fox and Betty Craver.

Mrs. Grove was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine Klipp; and her brothers, Thomas and Martin Rothenhoefer.

Visitation with family will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday Aug. 17, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Frederick. The Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington will officiate. Interment will follow at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be to the Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 W. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Enoch Harlan Jr.

On Aug. 14, 2008, Enoch "Skip" Lewis Harlan Jr., 79, of Taneytown, beloved husband of Nancy Harlan (nee Andersen); father of Sarah "Sally" H. Cox and her husband, Gary; Susan H. Taylor and her husband, Loren; Katharine "Kitty" H. Trout and her husband, Paul; James F. Harlan and his wife, Valerie; and the late Enoch Andrew "Drew" Harlan and his wife, Sarah Harlan Marusich; brother of Dorothy Fadrowski and Ann Novak. Also survived by 39 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was a loving, faithful and Godly husband and father.

Born in Baltimore, was in insurance sales and as an engineer. Member of the American Legion Post 297, Emmitsburg; former Gideon; and longtime member of the Walkersville Christian Fellowship.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road (at Franklin Blvd.) Interment in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Northwest Baptist Church.

Mrs. Irene Halpert

On Aug. 15, 2008, Irene Halpert, beloved sister of the late Daniel Halpert, Rose Shapiro, and Harold Halpert; devoted aunt of Lewis, Gary, Steven, and Daniel Shapiro.

Funeral services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Mount Lebanon cemetery, Adelphi.

Dr. Christopher C. Fordham III

Dr. Christopher C. Fordham III, 81, died peacefully Aug. 14, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

Dr. Fordham, Chancellor Emeritus and former dean of the UNC School of Medicine, served the university faithfully for nearly 50 years. In addition to his deep love for his family, he will be remembered for his devotion and dedication to the university.

Dr. Fordham is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Barbara Byrd of Greensboro, N.C.; he will also be missed by three daughters, Pamela Fordham Richey and fianc?, Stewart Walker; Susan Fordham Crowell and husband, James Allen Crowell Jr.; and Betsy Fordham Templeton and husband, Michael Maloney; also surviving are six grandchildren, Jennifer Richey Votel, and husband, Kevin; Leigh Richey Furman and husband, Jeff; Christopher Allen Richey and wife, Suzanne; Ryan DeHaven Templeton; Shelly Blythe Crowell and James Allen Crowell III; great-grandchildren, Camden Alexander Richey, Samantha Paige Richey, Abigail Elizabeth Furman, Molly Frances Furman, William Garrett Furman, Beckett Fordham Votel and Charles Thomas Votel. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher C. Fordham IV; his brother, Henry Clendenin Fordham; and his great-grandson, John Fordham Furman.

The entire family greatly appreciates the kind, loving care provided in Dr. Fordham's last months by Kim Albright and Francis Kamara. The compassionate care and concern of the physicians and staff at North Carolina Memorial Hospital was deeply meaningful to the family.

The family will receive visitors from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Orange United Methodist Church, 1220 Martin Luther King Blvd., Chapel Hill. Following a private internment service, a celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at University United Methodist Church, 150 E. Franklin St., in Chapel Hill. Parking has kindly been made available at University Baptist Church, 100 S. Columbia St. and in the university lot behind University Methodist Church.

Mrs. Leah Brandenburg

On Aug. 14, 2008, Leah Brandenburg (Nee Buhrman); dearest wife of Eugene H. Brandenburg; beloved daughter of the late Archie and Charlotte Buhrman; devoted mother of Galen B., Karl E., Kurt H. Brandenburg, and Dawn Delaney and husband, Phillip B. IV; loving sister of Henry, Arthur and Tommy Buhrman, and Louella Rowe and the late Lorraine Hurley, Larry, Dale, and William Buhrman. Also survived by may other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
