Mrs. Sally Jane Barnes

Sally Jane (Thomas) Barnes, 67, of Mount Airy, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at University of Medical Center. She was the spouse of William Herman Barnes Jr.

She was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late George C. Thomas and the late Justa (Witherspoon) Thomas.

Mrs. Barnes worked as a nurse for 20 years at Carroll Hospital Center and later became a school nurse for Howard County Public Schools before retiring in 2007. She was a 1958 graduate of Mount Airy High School. She enjoyed the company of her friends and family.

Surviving her in addition to her husband, are daughter and son-in-law, Julia and David Call of Prince Frederick; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Suellen Barnes of Mount Airy; brothers, George Thomas of Columbia and Dennis Thomas of Westminster; grandchildren, Brandon and Zachary Call and Mary-Kaitlyn and Mathew Barnes. Preceded in death by Brother Jim Thomas of Mount Airy.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, with the Rev. Clarence Kaylor officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Mount Airy. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug.18, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations to UMBF School Medicine, Attn: Alison Smith, Office of Development, 100 N. Greene St. Suite 600, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Mr. William R. Zimmerman

Mr. William R. Zimmerman, 79, of Frederick, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. He was the husband of Orpha Rudy Zimmerman, his wife of 43 years.

Born Dec. 29, 1928, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Roy Calvin and Helen Beachley Zimmerman.

Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the American Legion Post #11 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #371. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Nancy Lee Wilson and husband, Preston, of Florida; and a brother, Robert B. Zimmerman and wife, Ilse, of Glen Burnie; and devoted friend and caregiver, Brenda Pearson. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Jessica Palmer; and sister, Barbara Miskell.

He is also survived by a son from a former marriage, William R. Zimmerman Jr. and wife, Loretta, of Frederick.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Glade cemetery, Walkersville,

Mrs. Dorothy Blodgett

Mrs. Dorothy Cecilia Blodgett, 78, of Mount Airy, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at her daughter's residence in Hagerstown.

Born Nov. 24, 1929, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Snyder. She was a statistician for the U. S. Government, retiring in 1997, after 42 years service.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, with her family being the most important thing in her life.

Surviving are five children, Carol Ann Maclaskey and husband, Jay, of Montgomery, TX, Janice Kay Boylan and husband, Richard, of Mount Airy, Nancy Lee Hudson of Conroe, TX, Barbara L. Wright and fianc?, William Burson, of Hagerstown and Joseph R. Blodgett and wife, Patricia, of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Christina Marie Barnhart and husband, Robert, Larry Broschart Jr, Cheyne Maclaskey, Chase Maclaskey, Sean Hudson, Joseph J. Blodgett, Brendan Boylan, William Schaake, Shyann Dawson and Molly Blodgett; great-grandchildren, Jared, Megan and Allison Barnhart.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd, Mount Airy, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, with Deacon John Manley of St. John's Catholic Church, Frederick officiating.

Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville.

Mr. Everett Newman

Mr. Everett Emory "Buck" Newman, 89, of Clarksburg, died peacefully at home Friday, Aug. 15, 2008. He was the husband of the late Bille Dillon Newman, who died in 1977.

Born Aug. 13, 1919, in Pine Creek, Va., he was the son of the late Henry Augustus Newman and Lula May Smith.

He married his wife, Billie, July 6, 1940. He entered the U.S. Navy, Oct. 13, 1943, and was with the Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit #568 (Seabees), during World War II, serving in the Philippines. He retired with the united Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1590, of Washington, D.C. He was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church.

Surviving are children, Betty Peck of Clarksburg, Richard Newman and wife, Tammy, of Damascus, Gloria Briggs and husband, Frederick, of Comus, Everett E. Newman Jr., of Keedysville, Christine Farrell of Rockville and Cheryl Ann Newman of Rockville; grandchildren, Tiffany Newman of Damascus, Marley Wilkinson (Jamie) of Monroe, ME, Shawn Peck (Allison) of Katy, TX, Joseph Briggs of Comus, Jason Farrell of Salisbury, and Colby Newman of Willamston, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, James, Sarah, Elizabeth and Matthew; brothers, William Newman and wife, Toni, of Rockville, Wallace Newman and wife, Peggy, of Port Republic, Va.; sisters, Nancy Brodnax of Highland Springs, Va., and Shirley Clark of union Bridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Kathleen Blankenship, Pauline Murrell and Winnie Harris; brother, Clinton Newman; son-in-law, William "Danny" Farrell.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 11501 Mountain View Road, Damascus, MD 20872. The Rev. Glen Dameron will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Mountain View United Methodist Church at the address above or the ARC Program of Montgomery County, 11600 Nebel St., Rockville, MD 20850.

Mr. James Underwood Jr.

Mr. James "Jim" Underwood Jr., 65, of Plant City, Fla., formerly of Frederick, died Friday, Aug. 15, at Montgomery Hospice Casey House, Rockville. He was the husband of Diane M. Underwood.

Born on June 10, 1943, in Frederick, he was the son of James A. Underwood Sr., of Frederick, and the late Ruby Underwood.

Mr. Underwood was a former City of Frederick Policeman and a Frederick County Deputy Sheriff. He worked part time during the 1970s at the Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. He went on to own and operate Underwood's Concessions as well as being a Comedy State Hypnotist.

He was in the Masonic Order third degree mason, a member of the Showman's Shrine Club of Riverview, Fla., and the Blue Lodge of Gibsonton, Fla.

Jim had a great zest for people and life and lived his life to the fullest.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father are children, James "Buster" Underwood III of Walkersville, Tracey, Ginger and Jody all of Frederick, Kimberly McDonald of Florida and Tim Staley of Frederick; also survived by grandchildren; one brother, Larry Underwood of Frederick.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.. Wednesday, Aug. 20. The Rev. Tim May will officiate. Interment will be in Glade cemetery, Walkersville.

Mr. Leon Paradise

Leon Myron Paradise, age 84, of Somerford Place, Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at the home of his son.

Born March 10, 1924, in Moosic, Pa., he was the son of the late Marc A. and Edna M. Corby Paradise. He was preceded in death by his wives, Doris McNamar Paradise and Martha Sullivan Paradise.

He was formerly employed as a professor at the University of the District of Columbia. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. He was a member of Morris-Frock American Legion Post 42 in Hagerstown, Middletown Lions Club and he was an Eagle Scout.

He is survived by two daughters, Laura L. Paradise of Virginia and Mary Anne Paradise of Monrovia; three sons, Tom M. Paradise of Middletown, Richard L. Paradise of Sharpsburg, and Edward Paradise of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James B. Paradise.

Services will be private. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Western Maryland Region, 108 Byte Dr., Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Mary Wiles

Mrs. Mary Christine Wiles, 80, of Frederick died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, with her daughter by her side. She was the wife of John F. Wiles.

Born on Nov. 11, 1927, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late William M. And Mary M. Tyeryar Stevens.

Mrs. Wiles worked for the Frederick Tayloring Company, The Hartz Sewing Company and for American Optical Company where she was instrumental in the design of a cost saving device in the making of eyeglasses for which she received company recognition. After her retirement she went to work in retail at the Bon Ton and the Woolworth Co.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Judy A. Neal and her husband, Robert B., of Middletown; one grandson, Randy B. Neal of Middletown; brother, Russell Stevens of Ranson, W.Va.; special friend, Violet I. Neal of Frederick.

Mrs. Wiles was preceded in death by brothers, Alvin and Rudolph Stevens; and sister, Betty Keyser; also survived by nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the following people who helped with her care; Faye Scott at Citizens Nursing Home, Dr. Zaidi, Dr. Casagrande, Janet McCurdy, and the Staff of Citizens Nursing Home for their wonderful care.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday Aug. 17, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18. The Rev. Elsabeth Hilke will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mrs. Katherin Johnson

Katherin Marie Sullivan Johnson, 82, of Martinsburg, W.Va., formerly from Essex, passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at the Shenandoah Health Village Center, Charles Town, W.Va.

Born May 20, 1926, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Graham DeLeon Sullivan and Katherin Wilhelmenia Haywood.

She was of the Lutheran faith. She worked as a medical receptionist for Johns Hopkins Hospital.

She is survived by three sons, Brian P. Opie of Falls Church, Va., James Nesbit and Phillip John Opie of Baltimore; three daughters, Mary K. Opie Burdette, of Charles Town, W.Va., Melissa Opie Wood of Freeland, and Elizabeth Ann Duncan of Baltimore; grandchildren, Heather Burdette of Martinsburg, W.Va., Ricky Shafer of Frederick, Raymond Shafer of Thurmont, Roy Shafter of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Gregory Opie of Manchester, Tiffaney Blevins of Cockeysville, Christopher Opie of Falls Church, Va., Jeffrey, Eric and Nicole Hammaker of Baltimore; 16 great-grandchildren; special friend of 54 years, Roberta Stancliff of Baltimore, and friend, Ronald Kidwell. Thanks to caregiver Heather Burdette.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va., with the Pastor Doug Pixler officiating. Interment will be private.

Mr. William Morris Jr.

Mr. William Monroe Morris Jr., 76, of Martinsburg, W.Va., formerly of Mount Airy, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Martinsburg City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va. He was the husband of Stella Nydia Early Morris, his wife of 54 years.

Born Jan. 26, 1932, in Black Mountain, N.C., he was the son of the late William Monroe and Mary Louise Mull Morris.

William graduated from high school in Black Mountain in 1949, and then entered the U.S. Navy as a Fire Control Technician First Class, serving until 1958. He was next employed at Vitro Laboratories from 1958 to 1968. In 1968 William opened Mare Inc. in Frederick, serving area fisherman with boats and equipment until he sold the business in 1983. He was a charter member of the Mount Airy Baptist Church and served as a Deacon until 2003, when they moved to Martinsburg, and he became an active member of Baker Heights Baptist Church. He was God's witness wherever he went.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Sara M. Swetcharnik and husband, William, of Mount Airy, Mary M. LeGore and husband, Eric, of Woodbridge, Va., and Billie Eliza LaPlaca and husband, Mark, of Frederick; four grandchildren, Nicole L. Crouse and husband, Travis, Eric D. LeGore, Bryan LaPlaca and Jenna LaPlaca; a brother, Charles H. Morris and wife, Mary Ann, of Texas; three sisters, Dorothy McMahon and husband, Robert, of Black Mountain, Josephine Shook of Glouster Point, Va., and Marilyn Mizelle of Spotsylvania, Va.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Baker Heights Baptist Church, 580 Needy Road, Martinsburg, W.Va. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Baker Heights Baptist Church, 580 Needy Road, Martinsburg, WV 25405.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mrs. Emelie Slack

Emelie Lurene Slack, age 71, of North Main Street, Keedysville, went to be with the lord Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Reeders Memorial Home in Boonsboro.

Born Nov. 21, 1936, in Myersdale, Pa., Emelie was a daughter of the late Oscar and Rhea Horning Burt.

She was a homemaker. Emelie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church near Boonsboro where she loved going to church and was devoted to the Lord. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and sister-in-law and had many wonderful neighbors and friends.

Emelie is survived by her husband, Larry P. Slack Sr., with whom she would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 12, 2008; three children, Larry P. Slack Jr. and Rhea K. Slack, both of Keedysville, and Elmer Lee Slack and wife, Kim, of Gaithersburg; one brother, Harrold L. Burt and wife, Bessie, of Myersdale, Pa.; sister-in-law, Mary Burt of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Justin, Carly, Kristina, Kelly and Carrie Slack; daughter-in-law, Connie, and daughters, Chelsea and Danielle.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Slack; and two brothers, William Burt and Daniel Burt.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Calvary Baptist Church, located at the corner of Mount Carmel Church Road and Rt. 67 near Boonsboro. The Rev. Mark Waldron will officiate. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall.

Mrs. Irene Winebrener

Mrs. Irene Catherine Winebrener, 89, of Union Bridge, died quietly Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, aboard the Fox Den II in the Baltimore Harbor.

Born March 22, 1919, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Leven and Maida Biles Barnes. She was the wife of Thomas R. Winebrener, who died in 2002. After high school Mrs. Winebrener, attended nursing school and worked as a therapist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she met the Pfoutz family, which brought about the later move to Union Bridge, learning that Buckey's Hardware Store was for sale. While in Baltimore, during World War II, she assumed her husband's position in his hardware store during his time in the Army, and she maintained a headquarters for the Civil Air Patrol. In 1952, she and her husband moved after purchasing the hardware store in Union Bridge, and owned and operated it for 50 years.

She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church of Libertytown, a former girl scout troop leader, and she served on the board of elections for a number of years. She enjoyed her family and friends, traveling, animals, flowers and her pets. Surviving are a son, Thomas William Winebrener and wife, Linda, of Union Bridge; a granddaughter, Jacqueline L. Nigh and husband, Lee, of New Market; a great-grandson, Thomas A. Dodson of Brunswick; three sisters, Thelma Kline of Hamilton, Charlotte Ratcliff of Hancock and Bernie Stallknecht of Hampstead; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Humphreys. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Parish Center of St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Msgr. John Dietzenbach as celebrant. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery, Union Bridge. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund of St. Peter's Catholic Church, P.O. Box 278, Libertytown, MD 21762.
