February 20, 2001

Elwood S. Achenbach of Tacoma Park, Md. died on Tuesday February 20, 2001 in the Washington Adventist Hospital, near Tacoma Park, Md. of heart failure. He was 90.

Mr. Achenbach was born in Pennsylvania, the son of the late Elmer and Lillie I. Solt Achenbach. Mr. Achenbach was a self-employed carpenter specializing in finish work. His wife Nora Hawk Achenbach who died on February 13th precedes Mr. Achenbach in death. Of this year.

Mr. Achenbach is survived by 1- daughter Rena Bernice Whitley of Kernersville, N.C. 1- son, LeRoy E. Achenbach of Tacoma Park, Md. 1- Brother- Orison E. Achenbach of Wind Gap, Pa. And several grand and great grandchildren .

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday February 24th. 2001 at 2pm from the George G. Bensing Funeral Home, Moorestown, Pa. 2165 Community Drive, Bath. Where friends and family may call 1hr. prior.

Interment will follow in the Plainfield cemetery, Plainfield, Pa.

Betty Jane Happersett Patterson of Crumpton and Rock Hall, Maryland died on Tuesday February 20, 2001 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, Md. She was 76. Born in Rock Hall, Maryland on March 26, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Howard Evans and Louise Casey Ashley Happersett. She was the wife of the late Walter Ezra Patterson who predeceased her on February 18, 1991. Mrs. Patterson was married in May of 1958, she and her husband resided in Rock Hall, Md. where she worked for several area restaurants before moving to Crumpton, Md. in 1990. Mrs. Patterson then worked at the Crumpton "Outpost" for several years until she retired due to illness. She was active with the Millington V.F.W. Post #652 for several years. Mrs. Patterson also participated in serving fundraising dinners and breakfasts for Crumpton Vol. Fire Department. Graveside services will be held on Friday February 23, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Wesley Chapel cemetery in Rock Hall, Md. Relatives and friends may call between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. on Friday before the service. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel cemetery.

February 19, 2001

Phyllis Ann Walls Smith of Annapolis died of natural causes at the Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis on Monday, February 19, 2001. She was 50.

Born January 14, 1951 in Milford, DE, she was the daughter of Florence Ann Carroll Walls Lee of Easton and the late Charles Fletcher Walls. Phyllis graduated from Queen Anne’s County High School in 1969. Following her graduation she went on to work at the C & P Telephone Company. In 1973 she began her career with United Parcel Service in Baltimore, MD. At the time of her death she was the Feeder Supervisor at the Joe Avenue location.

On June 29, 1982 she married Charles George Smith, III of Annapolis. She was a member of the Jeff Davis Unit #18, Ladies Auxiliary in Centreville, MD. She loved to travel and being in the sun.

In addition to her husband, and mother, Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Charles George Smith, IV of Centreville, VA; her daughter, Stacey Renee Smith of Annapolis, MD; Buddy’s Boy, Tommy Michael Welch of Pasadena, MD; her step-father, Wendell Lee of Easton; her step-brothers and sisters, Kevin Lee, Kenny Lee, Kaye Butler and Kim Reynolds; her step-mother, Flossye Walls Morris of Centreville, MD; her brothers, Charles Phillip Walls of Orlando, FL and John Medford Walls of Alexandria, VA; her sister, Marsha Lee Hennessey of Orlando, FL; and her step-sister, Donna Lee North of Marydel, MD.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 23, 2001 at 1:00 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD where friends may call on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Entombment will be in Chesterfield cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the John’s Hopkins Children’s Center, Development Office, 111 Market Place, Suite 901, Baltimore, MD 21202 or Make a Wish Foundation, 10920 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 1600, Kensington, MD 20895.

February 18, 2001

Eleanor Frew Alexander of Centreville, MD, formerly of Baltimore, died at the Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville on Sunday, February 18, 2001. She was 90.

Born in Baltimore, MD on January 14, 1911, she was the daughter of the late James and Katherine Carter Alexander. She graduated from Friends School in Baltimore in 1929 and then worked for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Baltimore as a lab technician and later for Dr. Sunday in private practice. At the time of her retirement she moved to Sudlersville and later to Queenstown.

Miss Alexander is survived by three nephews, Ronald Armstrong of Wedderdurn, OR, Brice Alexander and Andrew Alexander, both of Gillette, WY and a niece, Dulaney Alexander of Lynn MA.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD with a Graveside Service following at the St. Thomas Church cemetery, 232 St. Thomas Lane, Owings Mills, MD at 1:00 PM.

Memorial donations may be made to the Grasonville Volunteer Fire Dept. Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 554, Grasonville, MD 21638.

Eleanor B. Mead Peacock, 76 Mother, Grandmother, Teacher, Artist El. Mead, (Mum Mum), formerly of Media, PA resident of Rock Hall, MD. Who taught in the Rose Tree Media School District, Died Feb.18th at Chestertown Rehabilitation and Convalesance home, in Chestertown, MD from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.

She was a graduate of Upper Darby High School and West Chester Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. She taught fifth and sixth grade at Glennwood Elementary School until 1975.

El enjoyed painting, arts and crafts and her grand kids. El was married to the late Walter H. (Bucky) Mead who passed away December 17, 1974, and is survived by her companion, Henry W. Peacock of Rock Hall, MD. El is also survived by her daughter Anne M. Beals of Frederick, MD, a brother William H. Bassett, Jr. of Exton, PA and seven grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 6179 Rock Hall Road, Rock Hall, MD at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2001.

In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, Constitution Place 325 Chestnut St. Suite 1120, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

February 17, 2001

Florence E. Bertrand of Chestertown, Md. died Saturday, February 17, 2001 at Magnolia Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 70.

Florence E. Bertrand was born in Millington, Md. the daughter of the late Walter and Isabel Mabrey Everett. She graduated from Cecilton High School in 1949 and has been a life resident of Kent County. For the majority of her life she devoted her time and energy towards helping people as a private Care giver where she has worked in several institutions as well as privately.

Florence Bertrand was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Fairlee, Md. She loved to collect angels and in her earlier years she loved to dance.

Ms. Bertrand is survived by her daughter Donna Bertrand of Chestertown, Md. Whom she enjoyed spending time with. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, February 22, 2001 at 2:00 pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Friends may call Wednesday, February 21, 2001 from 7-9 pm.

Interment will be at the Crumpton cemetery in Crumpton, Md. following the service.

Francis G. Ford, 65 yrs, of Chester, MD, died on Saturday, February 17th, 2001 at the residence of his daughter in Centreville, MD.

A life long resident of Maryland's Eastern Shore, Mr. Ford was the son of the late Charles Owen & Carrie L. [Whitby] Ford. He was raised with a healthy respect for the treasures of the Chesapeake Bay and as a result of this up bringing he dedicated his life to the preservation of the Bay, while at the same time depending upon it for his living. He was a Waterman all of his life, fishing the various seasons and harvesting the Chesapeake's offerings.

Mr. Ford was extremely family orientated and his life evolved around his family and his work. He enjoyed his friends and was a well-known and respected member of his community. Mr. Ford liked watching wildlife, particularly the deer and the area's birds He was a charter member of the Bay County Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge # 831 in Queenstown, MD. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ford is preceded in death by 2 sisters, Barbara F. Lynch, and Christine F. Brady as well as by a brother, John L. Ford.

Surviving Mr. Ford is his wife of 42 years, Mary Lane Ford of Chester, MD, a daughter, Susan Ford Altfather and a sister Mary Agnes Ford Engle both of Centreville, MD, 2 brothers, Charles Owen Ford, Jr. of Ft. Pierce, Fl and Lawrence Theodore Ford of Kennedyville, MD and his two beloved grandsons, Daniel F and Charles L. Altfather both of Centreville, MD. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 21st from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the residence of his daughter, Susan Altfather - 1441 Ruthsburg Road, Centreville, MD.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 22nd, 3 :00 P.M. at Stevensville cemetery, on Kent Island.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made in his name to one or more of the following; The Bay County Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 831, 6154 Main Street, Queenstown, MD 21658, Queen Anne's Waterman's Festival, Inc. Virginia Lee Strawn of Easton, formerly of St. Michaels, died on Saturday, February 17, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 70.

Born on January 3, 1931 in Easton, she was the daughter of the late Walter Roy and Bessie Bell Robinson Warner. A lifelong resident of the Eastern Shore, she worked as a loan manager for the Talbot Bank from 1956 until 1974 when she married Hugh "Gus" Meredith Strawn

. Mrs. Strawn was a member of the St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Easton, the Martingham Country Club, Miles River Power Squadron Auxiliary, Edge Creek Boat Club, Poplar Islands Yacht Club, and the Navy League.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Bruce D. Hope of Stevensville, two step-daughters, Meredith A. Wellman of Chagrin Falls, OH and Andrea L. Powles of Herndon, VA; a sister, Lillian L. Brohawn of Newark, DE; and eight grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Easton on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601 or the American Heart Association, C/O Sheila Bateman, 501 Dutchman's Lane, Easton, MD 21601.

Charles H. Rideout, Sr., 95, a retired president of the S. Kann's Company of Washington, D.C., died after a short illness on February 17, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, MD.

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Mr. Rideout was educated in the public schools there and graduated from Ohio State University in 1928. The following year he received his Master's Degree in Retailing from the New York University. After working briefly at Macy's in New York City and Lamson's in Toledo, he accepted an executive position with Kann's Department Store where he worked for forty years until his retirement in 1975. When Kann's opened a suburban store in Clarendon, VA in 1951, Mr. Rideout was appointed manager.

While working in Clarendon, he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and chairman of the Community Chest. He was also a member of the Kiwanis, co-founder of the Committee of 100, a board director of the Clarendon Trust Company, and a member of the board of the Virginia Heart Association. In 1972, he moved back to the DC store where he served as president until his retirement in 1975.

In his retirement years in Easton, Mr. Rideout continued his volunteer service as chairman of the Junior Auxiliary and board member of the Easton Memorial Hospital, as president of the Easton Day Care Center, as co-founder of "Friends of the Easton Public Library", and as past-treasurer of the William Hill Retirement Community. Mr. Rideout's wife, Ruth, died in 1994.

He is survived by three sons, Charles H. Rideout, Jr. of Rockville, MD, Thomas P. Rideout of Hampton, VA, and Stephen W. Rideout of Alexandria, VA; a cousin, Miss Marie Fox of Toledo, OH; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your local chapter of the American Heart Association.
