Mr. William duBell

William H. duBell, 74, of Walkersville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Jean D. duBell; by his three children, William H. duBell Jr. and wife, Margaret, of Jamison, Pa., Sarah Ozcandarli of Boston and Nancy duBell of Havre de Grace; two grandchildren, Stirling and Phoebe duBell of Jamison, Pa.; and by his brother, Frank S. duBell of Southbury, Conn.

Mr. duBell was born Dec. 26, 1933 in Wilmington, Del. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1955, after which he attended the Army Language School in Monterey, Calif. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Army from 1955 to 1959, primarily stationed in Kassel, Germany. After working in sales for Procter & Gamble, Mr. duBell began a career working in low- income housing. He served both Frederick County and the City of Frederick in this capacity, and retired in 1996 after 18 years as the Frederick City director of Housing and Community Development.

In retirement, Mr. duBell remained active in low-income housing, serving as an arbitrator resolving tenant-landlord disputes. He traveled extensively with his wife, Jean. He enjoyed birding and was a longtime member of the Maryland Ornithological Society Frederick Bird Club. He assisted the elderly in completing tax returns and tutored elementary school students in math. He also often visited schools and nursing homes with his Shelty, Angus.

The body was cremated by the Cremation Society of Maryland and plans for a private memorial service are pending. Memorial contributions can be made to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, 410-328-4438.

Mr. Joseph Wolford

Joseph Winfield "Winnie" Wolford died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008. He passed away peacefully at his home in Rockville, with his family by his side.

He retired after 38 years with C&P; Telephone Company. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley Wolford; their six children, Debbie McConoughey, Gary Wolford (Beth), David Wolford (Liz), Donna Bewley (Jim), April Sartwell (Pat), Alice Calloway (Billy); 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. One great-grandchild preceded him in death.

Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 where services will immediately follow at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville.

Mrs. Edna Meadows

Edna Mae (Lowe) Meadows, 57, of Mount Airy, died suddenly Friday, Aug. 15, 2008 in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

She was the spouse of John A. Meadows of Mount Airy. She was born March 23, 1951 in Rockville.

Mrs. Meadows owned a cleaning service. She enjoyed gaming and playing slots and loved her family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are son, Quintin Trout of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Virginia Lynn Martinelli of Plano, Ill.; son, John Meadows II of Mount Airy; son, James Meadows of Mount Airy; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be private.

Mr. William Bates Jr.

William "Bill" Thomas Bates Jr., 60, of Martinsburg, W.VA., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, from complications received in a June automobile accident.

Born Nov. 2, 1947, he was the son of the late William Thomas Bates Sr. and Charlotte L. Watts, and the late Roy T. Watts. Bill was a 1966 graduate of Middletown High School, and served in the Air National Guard. Bill was a professional truck driver for more than 30 years and was known for his wonderful sense of humor, and was an avid lover of cars and horses.

Bill is survived by his sister, Carol (Watts) Hesse-Rodgers (wife of Brad Rodgers and the late Drew Hesse); his stepmother, Thelma Watts; two nieces, Kerri Fugate, and Korri Sanchez; six great nieces and nephews; his dear friends, Richard Allman and Eugene and Linda Clark, and a large network of friends in the Martinsburg, W.VA area.

A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at Harmony Methodist Church, 9455 Williamsport Pike, Falling Waters, W.Va., 25419. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mrs. Ann Daugherty Smiley

Mrs. Ann Daugherty Smiley died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, of Clarksburg.

She was the beloved wife of J. Martin Smiley; mother of Mark K. Pumphrey and his wife, Laura Kolb, of Fairfax, Va., Kevin M. Pumphrey of Clarksburg, and Scott M. Smiley of Montgomery Village; grandmother of Gregory M. Pumphrey; sister of Edward Daugherty Jr. and J. Lynn Stimmel. She is also survived by her former husband, Frank Pumphrey.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Avenue (Md. 28, exit 6-A just off I-270), Rockville. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church, 205 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church at the above address.

Master Andrew Bucknor

Andrew Walten Bucknor, born Aug. 12, 2008, as the infant son of Magna Johnston-Bucknor and Orville Bucknor, of Frederick, went to be with the Lord Aug. 13, 2008. Besides his parents, survivors include his sister, Kimberly Paige Bucknor, his four loving grandparents, and several, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. Harold Leatherman

Harold L. Leatherman, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at the Village of Laurel Run.

He was born Feb. 2, 1936, in Libertytown, as the son of the late Lloyd and Pauline (Emsweller) Leatherman.

Leatherman was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, retiring in 2004 after 20 years of service with the Valley Quarries. He was a life member of The Greenmount Fire Co. and The South Mountain Rangers Riding Club, a member of The Gettysburg Moose, former member of The Gettysburg American Legion Post #202, VFW Post #15 and The Fairfield AmVets.

Leatherman is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy M. (Kennell) Leatherman; a son, Todd L. Leatherman of Gettysburg, Pa.; two daughters, Kim M. Leatherman and Kelly L. Leatherman, both of Gettysburg, Pa.; two grandchildren, Justin Leatherman and Ravin Marie Selby; one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Leatherman; and two brothers, Earl Leatherman and D. Richard Smith of Gettysburg.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg. Interment with full military honors, provided by the Adams County Allied Veterans Association, will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Chaney

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Chaney, 94, of Westminster, died Tuesday, Aug.19, 2008, at Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster. She was the wife of the late Prentice Earl Chaney.

Born Sept. 21, 1913, in Maryland, she is the daughter of the late John Charles and Beulah E. (Peregoy) Osborn.

She was a bookkeeper at Montgomery Wards and Hess Country Stores, also a life member of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Reistertown.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles P. and Debi S. Chaney of Finsburg; a daughter, Cheryl (Chaney) Wright of Frederick; a granddaughter and husband, Jennifer E. and Jacob Bush of Hapstead, N.C.; grandsons, Harold B. Wright III (Rusty) of Arilington, Va., Andrew P.C. Wright of Arlington, Va., Jeffrey R. Chaney and wife, Elizabeth, of Westminster, Timothy J. Wright of Alexandria, Va. and Scott W. Chaney of Finksburg; great-granddaughter, Emma E. Chaney of Westminster.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 at Eline Funeral Home, Reisterstown. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 15331 Dover, Rd. Reisterstown. The Pastor Mary Ka Kanahan and Chaplain Jimmie Schwartz and Chaplain Dahl Drenning will officiate. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery, Reistertown.

Mr. Ernest Espinosa

Mr. Ernest Parker Espinosa, 72, of Walkersville, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at the Alice Manor Nursing Home in Baltimore. He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. Espinosa; youngest son, Jharad L. Espinosa.

Born June 11, 1936, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Ida (Parker) and Ernest Espinosa who had been a lobbyist.

He is also survived by his sister, Nina Yeager of Albuquerque, N.M.; as well as children from a previous marriage, a son, Christopher A. Espinosa; a daughter, Monica (Ida) Morgan both of Las Vegas, Nev., and his eldest daughter, Yvette Greene of Denver, Colo. In addition are many nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives from Albuquerque, N.M.; Buckeystown, and California.

He greatly enjoyed many trips to Albuquerque, where the majority of his relatives lived. Many buildings and locations in New Mexico, are named after his late relative, Senator Chaves.

He retired from the U.S. Senate as a staff employee where he worked with Senate documentation under the secretary of the U.S. Senate. He had started his career working at the Senate as a pageboy. He then moved back to Albuquerque, N.M., where he purchased and operated a restaurant. He later moved back to Maryland, where he owned and operated his own taxi cab under Yellow Cab of Washington, D.C., before returning to work at the U.S. Senate. He loved his work at the Senate, which are him the opportunity to personally meet and interact with many of the senators. His choice of careers shows his outgoing spirit and love of meeting new people.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N. in Frederick. The memorial service will be officiated by the Rev. Andy Aaron from St. Timothy's Catholic Church of Walkersville. Entombment will be private following the service.--

Memorial contributions may be made to the new Frederick Memorial Hospital's Catheration Lab 400 W.-- 7th St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Arrangements are by Dignity Funeral Home of Baltimore, and Resthaven Memorial Gardens of Frederick.

Mr. Charles Thomas Riley Jr.

Mr. Charles Thomas Riley Jr., 89, of Mount Airy, died Tuesday, Aug.19, 2008, at the Ellicott City Health Center. He was the lifelong companion of the late Margaret "Kitty" Long.

Born Nov. 7, 1918, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Charles T. and Anna Tracey Riley. He was a salesman in the beverage industry.

Surviving are a son, Charles T. Riley III and wife, Nora, of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Kimberly Riley of Odenton, Michael Riley and Christopher Riley both of Mount Airy; a brother, Robert Riley of Baltimore; and a sister, Mary Jane Hurley of New Jersey.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Poplar Springs Methodist cemetery, Mount Airy with the Rev. Michael J. Ruane officiating.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

Mr. Milton Bowens Sr.

Mr. Milton Stanley Bowens Sr., died Aug. 14, 2008.

Born July 29, 1944, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Charles and Edna Bowens and the husband of the late Gloria Mae Bowens.

He is survived by three sons, Milton Jr., Jermaine and Jonathan; one daughter, Shannon.

There will be a public viewing from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 at the Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, Frederick.

His homegoing service will be held at 10 a.m. until the time of the service, 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Calvery United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St., Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Mr. Mark McKenzie

Mark "Mick" McKenzie died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick.

He was the beloved son of Geneva "Genny" and Tom Meek of Rapidan, Va. and Gibson "Ed" and Donna McKenzie of LaPlata. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving partner, Samantha DeVries of Frederick. He was the father of Halligan T. McKenzie, Katelyn and Randi Hawkins; brother of Malissa "Missy" McKenzie Martin and her husband, Greg, of Rapidan, Va.; half-brother of Amanda "Mandy" McKenzie of LaPlata, Patricia "Tricia" McKenzie Buckler and her husband, Robert, of Mechanicsville and Wyatt McKenzie of LaPlata; uncle of Lucas and Kelsey McCulley and Alyssa and Payton Buckler.

Mick is also survived by all his brother firefighters in Maryland and in New York City.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Avenue (Rte. 28, exit 6-A just off I-270), Rockville. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 4101 Norbeck Road, Rockville.

Interment will be in Gate of Heaven cemetery.

Mr. John Lease

Mr. John William "Buster" Lease, 90, of New Windsor, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at his home after an extended illness.

Born August 6, 1918, in Harrisville, he was the son of the late Samuel and Rachael Ruth Chaney Lease. He was the husband of Dorothy Eyler Lease, his wife of 66 years.

Mr. Lease was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, New Windsor. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1943 with the 71st Coast Artillery. He was a dairy farmer and a rural mail carrier for the New Windsor post office. He volunteered with many community activities, including Cub Scouts, the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. and his church. As a former member of the Purple Martin Association, he was an avid enthusiast of this bird and observed them in his front yard in the numerous martin hotels he had made. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and watching baseball, especially the Orioles. He loved spending time with his family and was devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Barbara Misenar and husband, Neal, of New Windsor; three sons, Jerry Lease and wife, Ruth, of New Windsor; Larry Lease and wife, Pat, of Westminster; and Richard Lease and wife, Barbara, of Union Bridge; four sisters, Doris Gill of Towson; Evelyn Fleagle and husband, Bill, of New Windsor; Peggy Platt and husband, Tom, of Syracuse, N.Y.; and Mary Nagle and husband, Bruce, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Dot Lease, and a brother-in-law, Buck Gill.

A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with the Rev. Helen Armiger, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22.
