Mr. Richard Schindel

Richard L. (Dick) Schindel, 80, a lifelong resident of Frederick, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, at the Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Hagerstown, the son of the late Howard and Maisie Schindel. He moved to Frederick at the age of six months and lived here the rest of his life.

He was a graduate of Frederick High School, Augusta Military Academy, and York Junior College in York, Pa. He majored in business administration.

Always active in sports, he played football with the Frederick Hustlers and baseball with the Frederick Senecas during his school years. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. He was stationed in Italy.

Dick retired in 1996 after 45 years of service with the State Highway Administration. He was chief of the Right of Way Department and was in charge of purchasing rights of way for Frederick, Howard, and Carroll counties.

He was a member of the Frederick Lions Club, Cotillion Club, Catoctin Club, Frederick County Fish and Game Protective Associations, Elks Lodge 684, FSK American Legion, and VFW Post 3285.

Over the years, Dick served on the boards of several non-profit organizations. These included the Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, Community Living, Jeanne Bussard Center, and the United Way Gift Giving Committee. He also served on the Frederick City Board of Zoning Appeals and was a member of the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission.

Dick was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Washington Redskins, Baltimore Colts and later the Baltimore Ravens. He regularly followed the Baltimore Orioles and the University of Maryland. He particularly enjoyed golfing with his buddies at the Westwinds Golf Club. If he was not playing, he liked to watch professional golf tournaments.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Ann; his sister and brother-in-law, Julia and Robert Smith of New Oxford, Pa.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Maureen and Robert Kallstrom of Frederick; brother-in-law, Richard Israel of Frederick; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bentz and Second streets, Frederick.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Community Living, Inc. 620B Research Drive, Frederick, MD 21703.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Mrs. Ruth Shaffer

Mrs. Ruth Evelyn Shaffer, 84, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation, Frederick.

She was the wife of Irvin Woodrow "Bud" Shaffer, who died Jan. 14, 1981.

Born Nov. 4, 1923, in Cedar Mountain, Va., she was a daughter of the late Boate Guy and Molly E. Stovall Myers.

Surviving is a sister, Lucille N. Howard of Gaithersburg; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorene Myers and Florence Dodson; and four brothers: Floyd, Harry, Bernard and Elton Myers.

Mrs. Shaffer is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 North Market Street, Frederick where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14.

Graveside services and Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Those attending are asked to assemble at the Francis Scott Key Chapel inside Mount Olivet cemetery by 9:45 a.m. to proceed to the grave.

Mrs. Irva Powell

Mrs. Irva E. Powell, 94, fondly known as "Skippie", died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center, Westminster, formerly of Baltimore, she was a resident of Carroll Lutheran Village, since 1981. She was the wife of Luther Elwood "Joe" Powell, who died June 25, 1997.

Born July 15, 1914, in Baltimore, her parents were the late Joseph G. Ensor and Nena May Sundergill Ensor.

Mrs. Powell attended schools in Baltimore and worked as a billing clerk for Baltimore Gas & Electric prior to her marriage. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and spent the Christmas holidays in Williamsburg, Va., for many years. Mrs. Powell served as a volunteer at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Westminster, and, in later years, attended services in Krug Chapel at Carroll Lutheran Village. Surviving are eight devoted nieces and nephews, Corinna S. Bishop of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Raymond B. Sigler and wife, Sharon, of Harleysville, Pa., Yvonne P. Arbuckle of Flat Rock, N.C., Charles L. Powell and wife, Joan, of Spartanburg, S.C., Elizabeth H. Henley and husband, Robert, of Frederick, Grayson B. Haller III and wife, Carol, of Elmhurst, Ill.; William D. Powell Jr. and wife, Gail, of Thurmont, and Margaret P. Trimmer and husband, Donald, of Woodsboro.

Mrs. Powell was predeceased by a brother, Francis Ensor; a sister, Phoebe E. Sigler; and a niece, Jenny P. Rickman.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at in Krug Chapel, Carroll Lutheran Village, with Chaplains Jimmie Schwartz and Dahl Drenning officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time, Monday in Krug Chapel. Interment will be in Mount Hope cemetery, Woodsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Luther E. and Irva E. Powell Endowment Fund, Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD 21158.

Mrs. Betty Eyler

Mrs. Betty Rebecca Eyler, 78, of Thurmont, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey Pa. She was the wife, of Mearl Lloyd Eyler, who died in 1981.

Born June 2, 1930, in Thurmont, she was a daughter of the late Walter Vernon and Ethel Mae Kelly Smith.

Surviving are three children, Rebecca K. Eyler, Mearl Richard Eyler and wife, Pam, and Marlene Rae Eyler and fianc?, Cecil Ridenour, all of Thurmont; one granddaughter, Jennifer Renae Cregger and husband, Adam, of Fairfield Pa.; and a sister, Dorothy Alexander of Thurmont. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Eyler is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 East Main Street where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the funeral home with the Rev. James Hamrick, Lamb of God Church officiating.

Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

Mrs. Jean Keyser

Jean W. Keyser, 88, of 915 Kenly Avenue, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Towson.

Born April 1, 1920, in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Wallace N. and Ann Bowers Wheatley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Franklin S. Keyser July 15, 1978.

She was a graduate of Washington College in Chestertown. She was employed as a school teacher in Washington County for 28 years. She taught at Boonsboro High School and Pangborn Elementary, retiring in 1980.Jean was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. She was active in The Sterling-Bell Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women's Evening Enrichment Circle. Over the years, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was active in many church activities and committees. She was a member of the Hagerstown Women's Club. She was a member and Past President of The Crossroads Garden Club; Friends of Reeders Volunteer Board of Reeders Memorial Home; active member of Washington County Retired Teacher's Association; and a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha, Frederick Alumni Chapter.

She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Keyser Selby of Frederick; one son, Thomas F. Keyser of Millsboro; Del.; and three nephews, Richard Wheatley, William Wheatley Jr., and Robert Wheatley.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William W. Wheatley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Otterbein United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown

Memorial donations may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church for Mission Projects, 108 East Franklin Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740, or the charity of ones choice.

Mrs. Ethel Hoffman

Mrs. Ethel Mae Hoffman, 94, of Thurmont, died peacefully at her home Monday, Aug. 25, 2008. She was the wife of the late Earl "Si" Hoffman.

Born in Thurmont on Dec. 31, 1913, she was the second of 12 children to Glenna (Weller) and Edgar R. Lewis. A 1930 graduate of Thurmont High School, Ethel worked for more than 25 years as a sales lady at Lewis Cards and Gifts in Thurmont. She was one of the first telephone operators in the Thurmont area.

At her death, she was the oldest living member of Thurmont United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and for 27 years as the financial secretary. She was a member of Business and Professional Women's Club, a member of the Homemakers Club, and in her spare time loved to work in her garden and cook.

Devoted to her family, church and to helping others, Ethel is survived by her two daughters, Sue Ferguson and husband, Robert, of Thurmont, and Claudia Carnes and husband, Chuck, of Fort Worth, Texas; a son, James "Jim" Hoffman and wife, Joyce, of Frederick; five grandchildren, Steve Ferguson, Lisa George, Kristie Mills, Joanna Barton and Matthew Hoffman; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice Cary of Florida; three brothers, Donald Lewis and Raymond Lewis, both of Thurmont, and Robert Lewis of Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Anna, and brothers, Charles, Keefer, Morris, Harold, Harry "Buck" and Howard.

Sincere thanks goes out to her faithful caregivers, Jean Heims and Bev Lowe and her dear friend and care giver Mary Rice. Also a thank you to Stacy Bowers her hospice nurse for the wonderful medical care she received.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. A memorial service celebrating Ethel's life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Thurmont United Methodist Church with Rev.'s Gary Morgan and Matthew Poole officiating. The family will hold a reception immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and all are invited. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thurmont United Methodist Church, 13880 Long Road, Thurmont, MD 21788 or to Hospice of Frederick County P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Annette Contardi

Annette Andrea Contardi, 69, of Gambrills, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, after a two-year battle with lung cancer at her home with her family. Mrs. Contardi was born Nov. 13, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Michael and Anna Ciongoli, graduated from Turtle Creek High School, Business Training College in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Point Park College in Pittsburgh, Pa.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church located in Millersville.

She ran her own medical transcription business, worked in the medical field and proudly worked for more than 25 years with the United States Government, and retired as an analyst for the National Security Agency located at Ft. Meade.

She was a loving wife and mother who adored spending time with her seven grandchildren, reading, solving puzzles, and the theatre.

Annette is survived by her beloved husband of 42 years, Kenneth Contardi. She is also survived by two sons, Craig and wife, Carol Contardi and children, Jeremy, Courtney, and Hannah of Alexandria, Va.; Kevin and wife, Wendy Contardi and children, Nick, Katie, Mary, and Christina of New Market.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Donaldson Funeral Home located at 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton. A funeral mass will be held by Father Eugene Nickol at noon Friday, Aug. 29, at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Ave. S, Millersville. Friends are invited to stay for lunch at Our Lady of the Fields after the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 825 Hammonds Ferry Road, Suites H-J, Linthicum, MD 21090.

Mr. Ernest Lillard

Ernest "Tip" Renn Lillard died peacefully in Frederick on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008.

He was born Feb. 5, 1919 in Sellman, Montgomery Court. He was raised in Barnesville. He was the son of James Robert and Stella Renn Lillard. He graduated with a degree in accounting in 1939 and practiced in Washington until he volunteered for duty in the Army Air Corp of the U.S. Army in the spring of 1942.

As a first sergeant he served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before returning home and marrying Ellen Kessler Lillard in April of 1946. He changed careers and partnered with his father for more than 20 years in an excavating and paving company (Lillard and Son) before completing his work career as a construction project coordinator for the Frederick County government.

Tip enjoyed traveling worldwide throughout his 58 years of marriage with his wife, Ellen, and had many adventures.

He is survived by his sons, Jim and wife, Sharon, and Gary and wife, Krista. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Stephanie Phelps and husband Jon; Jack Renn Lillard and wife Christine; Matthew Lillard and wife Paula; and Rebecca Pomato and husband Nick. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren; a former daughter-in-law, Debbi Weddle; his brother, J. Robert Lillard Jr.; a sister, Rebecca Lillard Umstead; and several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen, in 2004 and his great-grandson, Joshua Phelps.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. David J. Albertson, will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Maryland, Frederick Memorial Hospital Cancer Patient Assistance Fund or to the charity of one's choice.

Mr. Steven Wellen

Steven W. Wellen, 35, of Winfield, died Monday Aug. 25, 2008, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

He was born Dec. 5, 1972 in Baltimore, the son of Debra and Steven Wellen of Finksburg.

He was the husband of Jennifer M. Wellen (nee Harrison).

He was the owner of A-Quality Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. He lived life to the fullest. He loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed friends, race cars and camping.

He is also survived by his children, Kyle Steven Wellen, Luke Harrison Wellen and Julia Michelle Wellen, all of Winfield. He was the brother of Brian Wellen of Sykesville; loving grandson of William Whitecotton of Westminster and Catherine Wellen of Hanover, Pa. and the late Doris Whitecotton and the late Hugh Wellen; son-in-law of Gary and Betty Poole of Winfield, and Gerald (Sonny) and Bonnie Harrison of Mount Airy; brother-in-law of Emily Hymiller of Union Bridge, Ben Poole of Winfield, Jason Harrison of Mount Airy and Greg Hymiller of Union Bridge; also survived by best friend and partner, Earl Post of Mount Airy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at St. James Episcopal Church 1307 N. Main St., Mount Airy, with the Rev. Portia Hirschman officiating.

Interment will be in Poplar Springs cemetery, Poplar Springs.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (beside South Carroll High School).

Mr. Les Zarnstorff

Mr. Les Paul Zarnstorff, 86, of Snow Lake, Miss., died Aug. 16, 2008, at Briarcrest Extended Care, Ashland, Miss. Born March 9, 1922 in Lake Geneva, Wis., he was the husband of Louise Zarnstorff of Snow Lake, Miss.

Les was in World War II, serving in the Air Force from 1942 to 1946. He spent most of his life in Montgomery County, where he owned a gas station and then became a small- engine mechanic.

He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church, Ashland, Miss.

He was predeceased by a son, Daniel Gene Zarnstorff, who died in 2005. He is survived by his wife, Louise; two daughters, Linda Davis, of Snow Lake, and Carol Reynolds and husband, Jim, of Brandon, Miss.; one grandson, Loftie Davis, of Columbus, Miss.; two granddaughters, Leanna Davis, of Columbus, Miss., and Samantha Reynolds of Brandon, Miss.

Graveside funeral services were held Aug. 18, at Liberty United Methodist Church, Ashland, Miss.
