Dr. Warren Iverson

Dr. Warren Philip Iverson, 84, longtime resident of Frederick, and noted microbiologist, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret Ellen Golibart Iverson.

He was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Plymouth, Wis., the only child of Barthold A. and Edna C. Hall Iverson.

Dr. Iverson received a B.A. in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin in 1944. He was a World War II veteran, being a member of the U.S. Army 104th iInfantry division medical unit (Timberwolf Div.). Warren received his PhD. in microbiology from Rutgers University in 1949. On February 4, 1956, Warren Iverson married Margaret Ellen Golibart at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Frederick. Dr. Iverson worked at the former National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg, retiring in 1985, where his work on microbial corrosion received international attention. Throughout his career he traveled widely, taught courses in microbiology and was author or coauthor of over 60 scientific papers.

He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Frederick; prior to that he attended St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Frederick. Dr. Iverson was a member of the American Society for Microbiology, American Society of Geolinguistics, Explorers Club, International Biodeterioration Society, Society of Industrial Microbiology, National Association of Corrosion Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Frederick Torch Club and Elks Club BPO #684 of Frederick.

Dr. Iverson was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving besides his wife, are a son, Martin Philip Iverson and wife, Kerry Callan, of Frederick; a daughter, Mary Katherine Rosso and husband, John, of Birmingham, Mich.; grandchildren, Emily, Jennifer and Caitlin Rosso of Birmingham Mich.; Timothy Iverson of Mount Airy, Melody Baumgardner of Frederick, Trenton Roudabush Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Krista Threefoot and husband, Matt, of Columbia; a great granddaughter, Michele Threefoot of Columbia; sisters-in-law, Madeleine Sherald of Frederick, Chica Golibart of Emmitsburg, and Jeanne Rogers and husband, Joseph, of Bethany Beach Del.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by friends, neighbors, colleagues and caregivers at Homewood at Crumland Farms. We will truly miss our beloved husband, father and grandfather "Pop."

Dr. Iverson is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Aug. 30, at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, with Fr. Keith Boisvert as the celebrant.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Donations in memory of Dr. Iverson may be sent to St. Katharine Drexel Church Building Fund, 8428 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702 or to the charity of one's choice.

Ms. Eileen Wachter

Ms. Eileen Wachter, 44, of Du Bois, Pa., formerly of Walkersville, died Monday, Aug. 25, at Christ the King Manor Nursing Home in Du Bois.

Born on Feb. 28, 1964, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Arthur Pilatsky and wife, Pat, of Du Bbois, Pa., and the late Sybil Creper Pilatsky. She was a software specialist at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Eileen was a 1982 graduate of Walkersville High School and attended Frederick Community College. She was a member of Walkersville United Methodist Church. Eileen was also a member of the American Legion Auxillary in both Yuma, Ariz., and Du Bbois, Pa. Eileen owned and operated a karaoke business in Arizona for 5 years. She enjoyed music, singing and shopping, but most of all loved being with her children.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two children, Melissa Erin Wachter and Jed Dulaney Wachter both of Walkersville; four brothers and sisters, Andrea Pilatsky, Julianne Moreno and husband Steve, all of Yuma, Ariz., John Croft and wife Victoria, of Culpepper, Va., and Nicholas Pilatsky and wife Gina, of Frederick.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, with Rev. Richard J. Murphy as Celebrant.

Interment will take place in Glade cemetery, Walkersville.

Memorial contributions may be made to DRMC Hospice, P.O. Box 447, Du Bois, PA 15801.

Mrs. Dorothy McHugh

Mrs. Dorothy Marie Savage McHugh, 77 of Silver Spring, formerly of Germantown, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Monday, Aug. 18, 2008. She was the wife of Paul McHugh.

Born Feb. 6, 1931, in Boyds, she was the daughter of the late William and Nellie Poole Burdette.

Before her retirement, Mrs. McHugh worked many years for the Blind Industries, running a blind stand at the National Bureau of Standards and then at the Atomic Energy Commission.

She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Chauncey and husband, Richard, of Silver Spring; and son David Savage and wife Jane, of Thurmont; four grandchildren, Brian James and wife Denise, of Cedar Park, Texas; Kevin James of Silver Spring; Jessica Robertson and husband Sean, and Jason Savage and wife Amanda, all of Thurmont; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Barbara Hefner and husband George, of Gaithersburg; Eleanor Frank of Baltimore; and Doris Carter and husband Roy, of Gaithersburg. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by a son, Marshall "Joe" Savage Jr.; her brothers and sisters, William Burdette Jr., James Burdette, Melvin Burdette and Joyce "Peggy" David.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, from Boyds Presbyterian Church, 19901 White Ground Road, Boyds. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. McHugh to the Boyds Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 320, Boyds, MD 20841.

Mr. Ronald Rockwell

Ronald T. Rockwell, 74, of Frederick, went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. He passed away at Golden Living in Frederick. He was the husband of Eunice C. Bown Rockwell. They were married for 28 years.

Born Aug. 15, 1934, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Thomas A. Rockwell and Edna Waters Rockwell.

He was a lifetime member of the Frederick First Church of the Nazarene. His favorite hymn was "Victory in Jesus." Ronald was a mail room supervisor for N.I.H. for 33 years, until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed sports, especially pool, and traveling. He loved watching movies and was an avid fan of World War II and John Wayne movies.

In addition to his loving wife Eunice, he is survived by a daughter, Faith Renee Neumann and husband, Les, of Thurmont; a brother, Paul A. Rockwell and wife, Doris, of Frederick; three grandchildren, Heather Chaney, Joshua Neumann and Jared Neumann; and two nephews, Paul Rockwell Jr. and Jerry Rockwell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Allison.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, where the family will be present to receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Frederick First Church of the Nazarene, 7899 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702, with the Rev. Robert Merki officiating.

Interment will be in Linden Hills cemetery, Frederick.

Mr. Sheldon Scher

On Aug. 26, 2008, Sheldon Scher, beloved husband of the late Etta Scher (nee Wacke); loving father of Howard Scher, Carol Grube, Ellen Scher and Susan Hoffmaster; loving father-in-law of Shari Scher, Barry Grube, Martha Dunn and Alan Hoffmaster; devoted brother of the late Ruth Rodell and Chester "Tom" Scher; beloved grandfather of Jennifer Amy, Jedd and Benjamin Scher; Joshua and Timothy Hoffmaster; and Matthew and Felicia Corinne Grube.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Sol Levinson & Bros. Inc., 8900 Reisterstown Road, Mount Wilson Lane. Interment was in Oheb Shalom Memorial Park -- Berrymans Lane.

Mr. Bernard Kelly Sr.

Mr. Bernard "Tony" Kelly Sr., 60, of Thurmont, passed away Aug. 27, 2008, at home with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diane Miller Kelly.

Born Dec. 25, 1947, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Bernard Norbert and Margaret Shields Kelly.

Tony was employed by Mount St. Mary's University, Emmitsburg, campus as a Lt. in the Public Safety Department. He was a member of the Son's of the Amvet's Post 7, Thurmont., the VFW canteen in Emmitsburg, and Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, Emmitsburg.

He is also survived by two children, a daughter, Stacy A. Long and husband, Jeremy, of Woodsboro; son, Tony Kelly Jr. and friend, Courtney, of Thurmont; three grandchildren, Patrick M. Kolb Jr and Fiancee, Lindsey Harbaugh, Christopher A. Kelly and Fiancee, Maggie Lawrence, and Laken Grossnickle Long all of Thurmont. His number two Susan Ott of Emmitsburg . A sister Patricia Sweeney and husband, Elmer, of Thurmont; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. He was proceeded in death by a sister and brother- in- law, MaryAnn Glass and husband, Sonny; a niece, Christina Glass and nephew, Francis Patrick Glass all of Taneytown.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, there will be a wake service at 8 p.m. with Father Jack Lombardi at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, from St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, St. Anthony's Road, Emmitsburg, with Father Paul Redmond as celebrant. Interment Mount Saint Mary's cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made, in Tony's name, to Hospice of Frederick County, P. O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Harry Fritz

Mr. Harry Roland Fritz, 88, of Westminster, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Carroll Hospice Dove House after an extended illness.

Born Oct. 2, 1919, in Union Bridge, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary Horning Fritz. He was the husband of Elizabeth Warehime Fritz, his wife of 62 years.

Mr. Fritz served in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing action in the Asiatic-Pacific theater. He was formerly employed with Farmers Fertilizer and Feed Co. of Westminster and then with Baltimore Gas and Electric for 32 years, prior to his retirement. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 31 and V.F.W. Post 467, all of Westminster and the North Carroll Rod and Gun Club. He was a former member of the Heart of Maryland Tractor Pullers. He enjoyed gardening and yard work.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Garey R. Fritz and wife, Janet, of Hanover, Pa. and William A. Fritz and wife, Paula, of Union Mills; two granddaughters, Tammy Lynn Fritz and Holly Fritz Byrnes and husband, Matthew; and a sister, Elsie Baust of Westminster. He was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Smith and three brothers, William, Kenneth and Leighton Fritz.

A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with the Rev. Kevin Clementson, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1.

Memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.

Mr. Avance Smith Jr

Avance Smith Jr., 77, of Frederick, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Avance Smith Jr., was born June 20, 1931, to Olivia and Avance Smith Sr.

Avance was known to all his friends as "Smitty." As a young man, Smitty entered the military when he enlisted with the Army in 1950. He had many assignments throughout his career but settled in as a satellite communications specialist at Fort Detrick. He served dutifully in Vietnam, and received a bronze medal. After suffering his first stroke in 1986, he received a medical discharge from the Army at the rank of Master Sergeant.In his active years Smitty loved bowling, dancing, and photography, later he especially loved the horse races, the Triple Crown, and going to Charlestown whenever he got the chance.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Sonya Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Daryl Smith; daughter, Rhonda; and son-in-law, Keith Patterson; granddaughters, Imani Patterson and Joy Scott; grandsons, Parris Scott and wife, Brandy, Keith Patterson Jr. and wife, Tiana, Omari Patterson and wife, Ashley, Akil Patterson; great-grandchildren, Chris, Nadir, Rakim, Parris Scott Jr., Tobias, Angelina, Maya and a host of family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.

Mr. Roland Faulkner

Mr. Roland "Bud" Faulkner, 72, of Mount Airy, died Wednesday Aug. 27, 2008. He was the husband of 46 years of marriage to Mrs. Dorothy "Dee" Faulkner.

Born Oct. 3, 1935, in Washington D.C. He was the son of the late Roland R. Sr. and Mary Edna Tyler Faulkner.

Bud enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid R/C enthusiast with a passion for classic boats, automobiles and aviation.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Faulkner is survived by his sons, Kevin H. of Frederick and Jeffrey S. Faulkner of Mount Airy; his daughter, Mary E. "Liz" Baker and husband, Harry of Walkersville; his grandchildren, Corey West, Ashley Faulkner and Madison Marinaro; four sisters; three brothers and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Faulkner was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert "Boo" Faulkner.

Visitation with family will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, from the funeral home. Monsignor John A. Dietzenbach will officiate. Interment will be at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Pall bearers for services will be Jimmy Mitchell, Todd Mitchell, Jaime Mitchell, Harry Baker Jr., Jeffrey Faulkner and Kevin Faulkner.

Mr. Ralph Ohler

Ralph Calvin Ohler, age 87, passed away quietly at his daughter's home, Wednesday Aug. 27, 2008.

Ralph was born and raised in and around Emmitsburg all his life except for the three years of army duty. He served in the South Pacific, Hawaii, New Zealand, the Philippines, and after the war, he was sent to Korea then to return home.

Ralph married his wife, Leah (Smith) Ohler in 1947, by Pastor Philip Bower at Elias Lutheran Church in Emmitsburg. Ralph loved his church and was a Sunday school teacher as well as serving as a deacon in the church. One of his hobbies was building model airplanes, flying them and to his dismay crashing them. He worked at the Cambridge Rubber Factory for several years, then going to work for the Springfield state hospital, retiring at the age of 62.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Leah, is a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and James Winfield; and a son, Eric Ohler all of Emmitsburg; grandchildren, Melissa Lewis of Cascade, Sherry Bomburger of Rocky Ridge, James Winfield Jr. of Gettysburg and Dustin Winfield of Emmitsburg; and a great grand-daughter, Courtney Bomburger of Rocky Ridge. Ralph was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Ohler Jr.; parents, Glen Ohler and Alma Ohler Sheely and step-father, Earl Sheely.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m Saturday at Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 North Ave., Emmitsburg with his pastor, the Rev. Ronald Fearer, officiating. Interment will follow in the Emmitsburg Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church, c/o Bonnie Hahn, P.O Box 465, 100 North Avenue, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.

Arrangements are by the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, Emmitsburg.

Mr. Charles K. Norwood II

Mr. Charles K. Norwood II, 83, of Mount Airy, died Aug. 27, 2008, at home with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Shirley Ann Norwood.

Born Aug. 5, 1925, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Charles Kemp and Hattie Rimbey Norwood.

He was a member of Mount Airy Full Gospel Church and also attended Prospect Methodist Church for many years. He was active in The Full Gospel Mens Fellowship for many years. He also served as a volunteer taking refreshments once a month to Springfield State Hospital. He served in the U.S. Navy, for three years and was part of The Seabees Unit. He served in the U.S. Army, for four years. He was a member of the Mount Airy American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mount Airy and was also active in the Mount Airy Fire Company for many years. He retired from the Mount Airy Post Office in 1986.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Charles "Butch" Norwood of Mount Airy and Joseph "Tony" Norwood and his wife, Patricia, of Keymar; six grandchildren, Stacy Perry and her husband, Mike, of Frederick, CK Norwood, Jacob Norwood and Seth Norwood of Mount Airy and Katie and Kellie Norwood of Keymar. He had a foster daughter Patti and her husband, Lou Lassiter; and children, Jacob, Kaci, Matthew, Caleb and Autumn Joy of Mosley, Virginia; one sister, Peggy Strine and husband, Robert, of Frederick; and sisters-in-law Dorothy Norwood of Mount Airy and Becky Norwood of Woodfield. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, William J. Norwood and brothers, Donald and Howard Norwood.

The family would like to express their thankfulness for care given by Hospice of Frederick County, the DSS Senior Care of Frederick and Doctors Eng and Toro for their care in the treatment for Parkinson's.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd, Mount Airy. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Mount Airy Full Gospel Church, 13949 Penn Shop Road, Mount Airy. Pastor Thomas Gue will officiate. Interment will follow in Prospect cemetery, Mount Airy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Airy Full Gospel Church, Hospice of Frederick County for the Parkinson's Foundation.
