Mr. Alfredo Borrero

Mr. Alfredo Borrero, 75, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at the College View Nursing Center. He is survived by his former wife Luz Borrero.

Born Sept. 10, 1932, in Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Thomas and Petra Borrero. Mr. Borrero was a member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church and also attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an 8-year veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War. Mr. Borrero spent most of his career as a electronics technician.

He is also survived by one daughter, Rida B. Mitchell and husband, Julian; two sons, Alfred Borrero, Rory Borrero and wife, Lyn; three grandchildren, Robert, Amanda and Eric Borrero.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Richard Murphy officiating.

Mrs. Lillian Joy

Mrs. Lillian Grace Thomas Joy, 88, lifelong resident of Frederick County and lifelong Frederick County educator, passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, surrounded by her family at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was affectionately known as "Dutch" by her family and friends. She was the wife of the late Jack Wilson Joy, with whom she enjoyed a marriage of more than 50 years.

She was born Sept. 29, 1919 in Frederick, one of three children, born to Guy Clifton Thomas and Helen Grace Dillar Thomas. She was raised and nurtured by her grandparents, George C. and Lillie J.E. Thomas and her late aunts, Pearl and Eva Thomas, along with her two sisters on wholesome Frederick County farms. Both aunts were educators in Frederick County, as well as her late sister Margaret Thomas Russell. Her late sister, Anna Louise, was a lifelong resident of Frederick.

Dutch was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1936. She received her bachelor's degree in Home Economics from Hood College in 1941, where she was a collegiate archery champion. She later completed her teaching certificate in education. Her teaching career was started at the former Libertytown High School after completing college. She worked for GSI in Washington, D.C. for several years before getting married and starting a family. Dutch completed her teaching career at Yellow Springs Elementary School and retired in 1982. She started teaching at Yellow Springs when the school opened and enjoyed teaching several generations of many area families. She will be remembered by the many hearts she touched in her learning career and by her sincere efforts and commitment to the field. It was a rare occasion when she would be outside the home and not have a chance meeting with a former student.

Dutch was a lifelong member of the Grace United Church of Christ at 25 E. 2nd Street, Frederick. She was a founding member of the Golden Ray Class and crossed boundaries by becoming the first female president of the church consistory. She also taught Sunday School classes and sang many years in the Grace Church Choir. Dutch served faithfully in church missions such as the Frederick Soup Kitchen and jail ministry. It was a large part of her life.

Dutch was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are sons, Mark Joy and wife, Pat, Bruce Joy; Michael Joy and wife, Jan, Alan Joy and wife, Cathy; and daughter, Peggiane Joy and lifelong companion, Steve Yinger, all living in the Frederick area. She has 11 grandchildren, Sarah Joy of Nashville, Tenn., Casey Joy of Denver, Colo., Megan Joy of Salisbury, Erin Joy of McConnellsburg, Pa.; Seth Joy, Catlin Joy, Nicolas Joy, Nash Yinger and Riley Yinger of Frederick; and a great-grandson, Samuel Richards of McConnellsburg, Pa. She will be remembered by friends, neighbors, colleagues and home care givers as well.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Keeney and Basford, PA, Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A service will be held at Grace United Church of Christ at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, Pastor Joe Foster officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missions Committee of Grace United Church of Christ at 25 E. 2nd Street, Frederick MD 21702.

Ms. Patricia Naugle

Ms. Patricia Lee Naugle, 70, of Boonsboro, died Wednesday. Aug. 27, at her home.

Born in Middletown, June 17, 1938, she was a daughter of John Herman and Elsie Dutrow Harshman. She was an avid bird lover, a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by one son, Wayne A. Baker and wife, Robin L., of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Aaron Baker and wife, Stephanie, of Hagerstown and Kyle Baker of Hagerstown; two sisters, Lorraine Watkins of Clarksburg and Nancy Reeder of Middletown.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Pamela Baker in 1991 and her bother, John Harshman in 2006.

Friends may call from p a.m. until time funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Interment will be made in the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren cemetery, Burkittsville.

Mrs. Susan Beans

Mrs. Susan Irene Black Beans, 39, of Smithsburg died Thursday, Aug. 28 at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington D.C. Mrs. Beans spent the last three years battling illnesses that were a result of treatment for Hodgkins disease she had as a child. She was the wife of Michael Wayne Beans of Smithsburg.

Born Sept. 27, 1968, in Front Royal Va., she was a daughter of Benjamin Hoffman and Norma Irene Moreland Black of Cascade.

Mrs. Beans was a very giving and generous person. She was a member of Frederick Chapter of MSSA and was a former realtor. She attended Evangelical Bible Church in Thurmont. She was an ardent cook, artistic cake decorator and an avid gardener. She loved all her nieces, nephews and pets.

Surviving besides her husband and parents are four sisters, Cheryl Fay Hooper and husband, George, of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Jennifer Alice Beck and husband, Eric, of Fairfield Pa., Sarah Beth Miller and husband, Jeff, of Waynesboro, Pa., and Marie Michelle Black of Charleston, Maine; a brother, Benjamin Richard Black and wife, Lisa, of Smithsburg; nieces and nephews, Angela, Megan, Alisha, Kristen, Joshua, Gabriel, Elijah, Joel, Nathan, Matthew and Emilee; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marlin and Jeanette Beans of Frederick; grandmother-in-law, Ruth McKenzie of Frederick; and two brothers-in-law, Stephen Beans of Fairfield, Pa., and David Beans and wife Tonya, of Sharpsburg. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed by everyone especially her family.

Mrs. Beans is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 East Main Street, Thurmont where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1. On Tuesday, September 2, Mrs. Beans will be removed to the Evangelical Bible Church, 14698, Albert Staub Court, Thurmont where she will repose from 10 to11 a.m. at which time services will begin with her pastors the Rev. Donna Sandridge and the Rev. Jeff Miller and the Rev. Warren Rice of Living Word Ministries, Blue Ridge Summit Pa.Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

The family wishes that any flowers for Mrs. Beans should be sent to the funeral home.

Mrs. Jean Reichard

Jean Marie Reichard, 77, formerly of Myersville, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Autumn Assisted Living in Hagerstown.

Born May 27, 1931, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Robert A. and Cora E. Baker Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles E. Reichard in 2005.

She was employed with the American Type Culture Collection Agency for 26 years. She was a member of the Manor Church of the Brethren, and previously served as church secretary.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Hord Clifton Reichard of Greenville, Va.; two sons, Steven Reichard, and Douglas Reichard, both of Hagerstown; a twin sister, June Alee Nigh of Funkstown; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Gary J. Reichard.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday at the Manor Church of the Brethren. Pastor Joy E. Zepp will officiate. Burial will be in Manor cemetery in Tilghmanton. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. Tuesday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard.

Mrs. Katherine Charlotte Carter

Katherine Charlotte Carter, 71, a resident of Readers Memorial Home, in Boonsboro, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at the Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 3, 1937 in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Martin S. Carter and Katherine L. Leith Monroe.

She is survived by her seven children, John Best Jr., of Hayattstown, Vanessa Shanholtz of Keyser, W.Va., Thomas Leo Kurrsey Jr., of Hagerstown, Dale Lee Kursey of Frederick, Robert Henry Kursey of Hagerstown, Marvin Daniel Kursey of Elizabethon, Tenn., and Garnet Ann Bond of Iuka, Miss.; one brother, James Curtis Carter of Dickerson; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sister, Alice Marie Vining; brothers, William Ownes, Martin Cater Jr., Harrison Barnhouse and Robert Barnhouse; step-fathers, Virgil Clark Barnhouse, and James J. Monroe; step-brothers, Ernest Barnhouse and Virgil Barnhouse.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. Seminarian Regina Beard will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording cemetery in Hagerstown.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Benjamin Runkles

Benjamin Samuel Runkles, 75, of Myersville, died Friday Aug. 29, 2008, at the Veteran's Affair Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. He was the husband of Nadine Brandenburg Runkles for 51 years.

Born in Brunswick, June 6, 1933, he was a son of the late Winter Sellman and Emma Catherine Walker Runkles.

He was employed as an electrician with Ridge Electric in Frederick until his retirement. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and also served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the FSK American Legion Post 10, Frederick and Frederick AMVETS Post 2. He enjoyed fishing and swimming.

Surviving, besides his wife, are, one daughter, Cris Linn Lewis and husband, Richard, of Wolfsville; two sons, Matt B. Runkles and wife, Judy, and Kirk N. Runkles and wife, Tammy, all of Wolfsville; five grandchildren, I. Benjamin Lewis, Nicki Runkles, Mandi Runkles, Rebecca Runkles, Eli Runkles; one great-grandson, Anthony Runkles; one sister, Ann Hardy and husband, Daniel, of Lovettsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a half-brother, Leo Runkles and a half-sister, Virginia Summers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Friends may call anytime on Monday, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, from the Harmony Church of the Brethren, 3924 Brethren Church Rd., Myersville. The Rev. Tracy L. Wiser, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Harmony Church of the Brethren cemetery, Myersville.

Mr. Robert E. Booth

Robert E. (Bob) Booth, 69, of Mount Airy, who formerly lived in Laurel for 20 years, died peacefully at his home Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008.

Born Feb. 25, 1939, in Baltimore. Bob is survived by his wife of 49 years, Erma L. (Boone) Booth; brother, David E. Booth Sr.; daughters, Linda McDaniel and Barbara Henney; son, Timothy Booth; and nine grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves from 1957 until 1963 and worked as an Industrial Specialist for the Naval Air Systems Command first at the Washington Navy Yard, then at their offices in Crystal City, Va. He served as Master of Laurel Wreath Lodge 149 in 1970. He also served as secretary for 4 years, treasurer for 20 years and president of the Laurel Temple Holding Corporation for 10 years. He was currently conducting instruction and holds an honorary membership at Prudence Lodge 190 of Mount Airy.

A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, 915 E. Watersville Road, Mount Airy. A time of visitation with follow the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P. O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Sandra Kindred

Mrs. Sandra Kindred, 73, died Monday, Aug. 18, of ovarian cancer.

Sandra was born in Lansing, Mich., and spent most of her childhood in Orlando, Fla. She spent many years in Pensacola, Fla., and Alexandria, Va., before moving to Frederick in 1992.

Sandra loved the community and was deeply committed to her work as a nurse-therapist. She was a loving and devoted mother; a caring aunt; a friendly neighbor; and a fun-loving and faithful friend. Sandra's smile lit up the room, and her kindness, warmth and generosity were apparent to all who met her. She will be profoundly missed.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the chapel of Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. George Carney Jr.

George Leonard Carney, Jr., 82, of LaVale, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008.

Born Feb. 18, 1926, in LaVale, he was the son of the late George Leonard Carney and Mary Loretta (Knieriem) Carney. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Elizabeth Thomas, Mary Ann Knight and Loretta LaNeve.

A 1943 graduate of LaSalle High School, Mr. Carney enlisted in the military in 1944, and served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Force. He was stationed in Germany during World War II; receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1946.

Upon his return from military service, he worked in his family's business, Carney's Auto Parts, until entering the insurance field. In 1965, he began his career with CIGNA, assuming the position of Associate Manager and attaining his CLU and ChFC. Following his formal retirement in 1988, he continued to be active in the insurance industry as an independent consultant.

Mr. Carney was also a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, served as Past President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Elks, and a lifelong member of American Legion. Prior to his declining health in recent years, he was an avid golfer. Remembered for both his wit and integrity, he will remain highly respected, deeply loved and greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, June (Smith) Carney; four children, Michael G. Carney and wife, Katie, of Cumberland, Kathryn A. Barbati and husband, Ronald, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Barbara C. McIntyre, of Cumberland and Georgia L. Connor and husband, Rick, of New Market; nine grandchildren, Carolyn Knight, Brandon Carney, Lydia Paszek, Anthony Barbati, Renee Barbati, Brett MyIntyre, Sean McIntyre, Eric Connor and Megan Connor; as well as five great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland. www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Bernard Finerty as celebrant.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans' Honor Guard. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans' cemetery at Rocky Gap.
