Mrs. Rosina Leone

Rosina Leone, of Monrovia, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008. She was born in Italy.

Mrs. Leone was the beloved wife of the late Luigi Leone; mother of Linda Romano, Vanda Petruccelli and Tina Leone; mother-in-law of Dorino Romano and Nicholas Petruccelli; grandmother of Nino, Gracie, Gino, Rosina, Christina, Maria, Rosina, Lisa, Gabriel and Luigina; grandmother-in-law of Kevin, April, Brian, Rob, George, Tony and Tim; great-grandmother of Joey, Jenna, Jacob, Michael, Julia, Nicholas, Anthony, Olivia, Dominic, Sofia, Lucia, Mateo, Nina, Nicola, Maria, Michela, Rosina, Vincent and Giana.

Relatives and friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Holy Redeemer Church Summit Avenue and Cable Drive, Kensington. Interment Gate of Heaven cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ignatius of Loyola Building Fund, 4103 Prices Distillery Road, Ijamsville, MD 21754.

Mrs. Elsa R. Wertenbaker

Elsa R. Wertenbaker, 86, of Walkersville, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008. She was the wife of the late William O. Wertenbaker Jr., who died in 2007.

Born May 26, 1922, in Wurzburg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Valentin and Anna Baumbach Roeder.

Mrs. Wertenbaker grew up in Fulda, Germany. She came to the United States following World War II to marry her husband.

Mrs. Wertenbaker worked for the National Geographic at the Foreign Register until her retirement. She was a former member of the Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, a Member of Saint Timothy's Roman Catholic Church of Walkersville, the Catholic Daughters, Our Lady of Emmittsburg prayer group, the "Seniors" of Walkersville and was actively involved in the "Daybreak Program."

Mrs. Wertenbaker is survived by her daughter, Linda Holdcroft and husband, Barry, of Knoxville; her grandchildren, Gabriela, Forrest and Clayton Holdcroft; her sister, Inge Ramsburg and special friend, Rudy Rodriguez, of New Market; and her niece, Anna Ramsburg of Selbyville, Del.

Mrs. Wertenbaker was preceded in by her daughter, Carol Ann High.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the Saint Timothy's Roman Catholic Church of Walkersville.

Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. from the church. Father Andrew Aaron will officiate. Interment will be at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

The Wertenbaker family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Frederick Memorial Hospital Cardiology and Intensive Care departments' staff for the care of their mother and to Dr. Gough for the many years of care he provided.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mission of Mercy, 22 S. Market St., #6D, Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Madeline Gemmell

Madeline Santa Gemmell, 77, of Mount Airy, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at her residence following a brief illness.

Born Jan. 16, 1931, in Manhattan, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine LaBabera Bellone. She was the wife of Robert A. Gemmell, with whom she celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary last week.

Mrs. Gemmell was a homemaker for most of her adult life, but was also employed as a secretary and later with JoAnn Fabrics and The Hello Shop. She was a member of the Good Neighbors Club and the Hyattstown Fire Company Auxiliary. She was of the Catholic faith and was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing and crafts.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Tim Lowman of Unionville, Cheryl Hopko of Monrovia; son and fianc?e, Robert K. Gemmell and Cynthia Cusumano of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Britney and Steven Lowman, Lauren, Rachel and Andrew Hopko; sister, Rose Milici and husband, Joe, of Flushing, N.Y.; brother-in-law, John Loscalzo of Flushing; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by granddaughter, Christiana Lowman; sister, Pauline Loscalzo; son-in-law, Mark Hopko; sister-in-law, Joan Gemmell; and brother-in-law, James Gemmell.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Chapel Mausoleum at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick; Rev. Daniel Goulet, of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Frederick, will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Louise Layman

Mrs. N. Louise Waltz Layman, 79, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Northampton Manor. She was the wife of George Martin Layman Jr., whom she married May 5, 1951.

She was born Sept. 18, 1928, in Baltimore and was the daughter of the late Author and Margaret Runkles Waltz. Louise was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Lodge 49. She was also a member of Calvary Methodist Church. She worked at the B&O; Railroad in Baltimore until her marriage. She then moved to Frederick where she worked at the F&M; Bank until she retired.

She is survived by one son, George Martin Layman III and his wife, Rebecca; and three grandchildren, Hannah, Andrew and Caroline; one sister, Lacy Smalley of Baltimore; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Arnold, Kathryn Waltz and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Layman.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, from the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Those desiring may send memorial donations to the Alzheimers Association, 108 Byte Drive, Ste 103, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Margaret Ann Noel Wilbur

Margaret Ann Noel Wilbur, 95, died Aug. 13, 2008, at the National Lutheran Home, Rockville. She was the wife of Herbert S. Wilbur for 65 years before he passed away in 1998.

Mrs. Wilbur was born in Windsor, Mo. to Peter Ramie Noel and Frances Lucinda Hicks Noel. She moved to the Washington, D.C., area during the Great Depression after attending what is now the College of the Ozarks.

Mrs. Wilbur studied music at St. Cecilia Music Preparatory School, Paris, Ark., and later under Sophicles Pappas, guitar, and Gordon Atwater, organist, in Washington, D.C. She taught hundreds of students piano, organ, guitar and violin in the Frederick area for more than 60 years.

She is survived by three sons, Herbert S. Wilbur, Jr. and wife, Voula, Corona, California, John P. Wilbur and wife, Jeanie, Frederick, and Charles S. Wilbur and wife Cynthia, Chevy Chase; granddaughters, Diane Younkins and husband, John, Knoxville, Susan Jensen and husband, Chris, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Noel Williams and husband, Robert, Seattle, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Adam Jensen and wife, Kimberly, Nashville, Tenn., Laura Wecke, and husband, Erick, San Antonio, Texas, Candace Upton, and husband, Glen, Phoenixville, Pa., and Lindsey Younkins, Phoenixville, PA; and a great-great-grandson, Alexander Upton.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to music endeavors that provide assistance to youth interested in music.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1914 Ballenger Creek Pike, Point of Rocks MD 21777.

Mr. Walter D. Folger Jr.

Walter D. Folger Jr., 68, of Frederick, passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at the Gettysburg Lutheran Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Dec. 9, 1939, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Walter and Genevieve Folger.

He was a graduate of Milford Mill High School. In 1964 he received his undergraduate degree and in 1966 his master's both from the Maryland Institute of Art.

He previously was a professor at Hood College and most recently a professor at Frederick Community College.

He enjoyed photography, art and antiques.

He is survived by his son, Marcus Folger and wife, Beth, of Gettysburg, and three grandchildren, Jennifer Zanella, Evan Folger and Weston Folger, all of Gettysburg.

He is preceded in death by his son, Alexander Folger.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick; the family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to service time.

Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexander Folger Scholarship, Frederick Community College Foundation Inc., 7932 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702 and/or to the Hospice of the Good Shepard, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325.

Mr. John Matthews

John Tankard Matthews, 80, of Keymar, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at his home.

Born May 22, 1928, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Lewis James Jr. and Elizabeth Emery Matthews. He was the husband of Jacqueline Schweitzer Matthews, his wife of 57 years.

Mr. Matthews was formerly employed as an aeronautical aerospace research engineer with David Taylor Model Basin in Carderock. He had attended Doubs United Methodist Church, near Adamstown. He was a life member of Carroll Manor Fire Co. and New Midway Fire Company, where he held various offices in both. He was very active in the Carroll Manor Lions Club while living in Adamstown, and was a former member of the Linganore Grange.

Mr. Matthews enjoyed life and woodworking, his family around him and all of his projects.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter, Christine Ann Matthews Garver and husband, Douglas E., of near Keymar; grandson, Jason D. Garver; sister, Helen Lauretta Wilson of Wheaton; and brother, Stephen E. Matthews of Berline.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lewis James Matthews III; and a sister, Margaret Matthews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, with the Rev. Jerry Cline, pastor of Libertytown United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home; where Carroll Manor Fire Department will hold a memorial service at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Manor Fire Co., P.O. Box 7, Adamstown, MD 21710, or New Midway Fire Co., P.O. Box 67, New Midway, MD 21775.

Mr. Samuel Mullen III

Mr. Samuel “Sam” H. Mullen III, of Thurmont, died June 30, 2008, in Frederick. He was the husband of Barbara Ballinger Mullen. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6., from Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 3425 Green Valley Road, Ijamsville.

Mr. William Mercer

William Burtis Mercer, 84, died suddenly of heart failure Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was a resident of Cape Saint Claire near Annapolis for 37 years.

Mr. Mercer was born Aug. 12, 1924, and raised in Fairmont, W.Va. He lived in Frederick from 1952 until 1971. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a master's in chemistry from The Ohio State University, and taught chemistry and mathematics at Denison University in Ohio and Salem College in West Virginia.

Mr. Mercer worked for the Department of Defense at Fort Detrick in Frederick, then at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center in Annapolis, before his retirement in 1985. Mr. Mercer held several patents with coworkers at NSRDC.

He was an active member of Cape Saint Claire United Methodist Church, where he served on the board and visited the sick and shut-ins. He was a longtime member of the American Chemical Society and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. Mr. Mercer studied Spanish and French and enjoyed painting watercolors and baking bread.

He was the son of the late Arza Fountain Thomas Mercer and Ella Burtis Schooley Mercer.

He is survived by his wife Doris C. Mercer, nee Fisher, whom he married Oct. 16, 1955. Mr. Mercer is also survived by his daughter, Susan Mercer Coale of Arnold; a son, Mark Burtis Mercer of Lutherville; four grandchildren, Katie Coale, Amanda Coale, Jenny Mercer and Jamie Mercer; and one brother, Herbert B. Mercer of Conway, S.C.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Barranco & Sons, P.A., Severna Park Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Cape Saint Claire United Methodist Church. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cape Saint Claire United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 855 Chestnut Tree Drive, Annapolis, MD 21409.

Mr. Anthony Velez

Mr. Anthony Velez, 49, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at his residence.

Born Sept. 10, 1958, in New York, he was a son of the late Frank J. and Iris D. Vilches Velez formerly of Miami Springs, Fla.

His life and times was that of a devoted father to his daughters and one that enjoyed all that life could afford him. His hobbies included working on his Camaro and the thrill of sport. He graduated from Miami Springs Senior High School in Miami Springs, Fla. He worked for nearly two decades with the Coventa Energy Company throughout the United States, finishing his employment at the plant in Frederick.

Surviving are his two daughters, Tiffany and Rena Velez of Pennsylvania, who gave him the most pleasure in life; a sister, Diana Legler of Colorado; a brother, Dennis Velez of North Carolina; and nieces, Jessica and Lindsay Rose Legler of Colorado and Nicole Velez of North Carolina.

Arrangements are by Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick. There will be no calling or visiting at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the funeral home.

Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Velez to the Trust of Tiffany and Rena Velez, c/o Diana Legler, 712 Aurora Street, Fort Morgan, CO 80701.
