Mr. Robert Miller

Robert "David" Miller, 64, of Denison, Kan., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kan. He was born June 23, 1944, in Frederick, as the son of Samuel A. and Ruth L. Free Miller.

Mr. Miller graduated from Frederick High School in 1962. He served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam as a member of the Strategic Air Command. He worked at Holton Napa Auto Parts Store for 12 years. Mr. Miller has lived in the Denison community since 1983 and had previously lived in Topeka.

He married Barbara Anderson on August 1, 1970, in Topeka, Kan. She survives.

Other survivors include his sister, Barbara Wellington and husband, Ron, of Titusville, Fla.; a brother--in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Charlene Anderson of Hoyt, Kan.; a niece, Lisa Wellington of Titusville, Fla.; two nephews, Gary Anderson and his wife, Leslie, of Meriden, Kan., Doug Anderson and his wife, Brandy, of Netawaka, Kan.; two great-nephews, Blake and Brock; two great-nieces, Kacie and Taylor; an aunt, Grace Koehl of Frederick; by marriage, his aunt, Ida Boyles of Denison, Kan.; his uncle, Gordon Kern of Mayetta, Kan.

Mr. Miller was cremated. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Denison cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Jackson County Humane Shelter or a charity of their choice sent c/o Mercer Funeral Home P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.

Mrs. Dorothy Groomes

Mrs. Dorothy Groomes, 86, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at her home in Mount Airy. She was the wife of Gilbert Groomes, her husband of 43 years.

Born Jan. 13, 1922, she was the seventh generation of her family to be born in Mount Airy. Dorothy was a daughter of the late Lester and Della Moxley Harrison, and was the last of her immediate family to survive.

Dorothy worked for 10 years at Floyd's Restaurant in Mount Airy, 10 years at Myers Drug Store and then worked as a nannie for several Mount Airy families.

She loved to dance in her youth. She enjoyed dining out at different area restaurants with her husband and daughter. She had a great love for her home, and the neighborhood in which she lived and she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving, besides her husband, is her daughter, Doris Ann Bridges Remines of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Mandy Remines of Hagerstown, Mike Remines of Mount Airy and Elaine Chaney of Taneytown; one great-granddaughter, Alexandra Chaney of Taneytown; and her loving maltese, Mollie.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Brandon Chaney; son-in-law, Mike Remines; one brother and two sisters.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mount Airy. Pastors Wayne Hall and Wallace Lusk will officiate. Interment will be private.

The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Locust Grove Church of The Brethren — Good Samaritan Fund, and mailed to the church address above.

Arrangements are by Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, Damascus.

Mr. James Hess

Mr. James Phillip Hess, 86, of Littlestown, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Gettysburg Hospital.

Born Nov. 17, 1921 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Jacob and Mabel Hess. He was the husband of Marie Morgan Hess who died in 1981. He was raised in Indian Head.

Mr. Hess served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1972. He saw action in the Pacific theater during World War II and was assigned to the Marines as chief hospital corpsman on Iwo Jima where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. He was the officer in charge of the quarantine station with the U.S. Public Health Service. He was a life member of the Glen W. Eyler American Legion Post of Woodsboro.

Surviving are a son, Justin Hess and wife, Gwainevere, of Bethesda; a granddaughter, Kathryn Morris; sister, Elaine Whitley of North Carolina; great-niece, Courtney and great-nephew, Brian, both of North Carolina and his companion of 24 years, Joan Athey of Germantown.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Rocky Hill cemetery, Coppermine Road, Woodsboro, with the Rev. Russell Mills officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro.

Mr. Frank Stong

Frank Hazzard Stong, 65, of Union Bridge, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at his home after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 11, 1942 in Oxford, Pa., he was the son of the late Albert Harrison and Eula Mae Clark Stong.

Mr. Stong was a 1962 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School then served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1970, seeing action in Vietnam. He and his brothers owned and operated Stong Brothers Fork Lifts in materials and handling. He was also an independent cross country trucker. Frank was a member of Bark Hill Bible Church and enjoyed playing stringed instruments.

Surviving are two sisters, Eula M. Uhler of Reisterstown and Dr. Mary E. Stong of Union Bridge; and two brothers, Albert H. Stong of Glen Rock, Pa. and Beach C. Stong of Union Bridge. He was predeceased by a sister, Dr. Jean Elaine Stong; brothers, Charles M. Stong, Joseph E. Stong and James L. Stong; and friend, Mary Ridwell.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the family residence, 4210 Bark Hill Road, Union Bridge, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Darner, his pastor and the Rev. Mitchell Dillon, former pastor of Uniontown Bible Church, officiating.

There will be no public visitation at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bark Hill Bible Church, 4350 Bark Hill Road, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Mr. Kyle Sawyers

Kyle David Sawyers, 78, of Broad Creek, N.C., departed this life Aug. 16, 2008.

He was born in Smoot, W.Va., Feb. 14, 1930, to the late Rev. Edwin Kyle and Edith Katherine Sawyers.

Mr. Sawyers was a 1948 graduate of Damascus High School. He was a proud veteran with 22 years of service in the U.S. Army and retired as a Master Sergeant in November 1973.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Sawyers of the home; a daughter, Mary Katherine Dennis; a son, Robert Earl Sawyers; and two grandchildren, Lean and Kyle, all of Swansboro, N.C. He has one surviving sister, Betty Burdette and husband, Norman, of Ijamsville.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Sue Graf of Hampstead; a brother, Robert Lee Fry of North Carolina; and a son, Gary Martin Sawyers of Frederick.

Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were by Munden Funeral Home, Morehead City, N.C.

Mrs. Eliza Smoot

Eliza Smoot, 100, of Walkersville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008. She was born May 6, 1908, in Morehead, Ky., to the late Levi and Martha Eldridge. Eliza was a former Gary, Valparaiso and Kentucky resident.

She is survived by one son, Walter (Sandra) Smoot of Crown Point, Ind.; one daughter, Irma (Charles) Medinger of Walkersville; one son-in-law, Paul Blomeyer of Valparaiso, Ind.; granddaughters, Jill (M.J.) Hermes of Ijamsville; Kathryn (Joseph) Kramer-Jefferson of Hagerstown; great-grandchildren, Ben Hermes, Gentry and Olivia Jefferson. Also survived by six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild in Indiana and Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond W. Smoot; three daughters, Vivian Stimson, Irene Blomeyer and Billy Katherine Smoot; five sisters and six brothers.

It was Eliza's desire that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 3215, Frederick, MD 21705.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart with the Rev. Mario Bustos officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland cemetery, Valparaiso, Ind.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.

Mr. John Rogers

John R. "Jack" Rogers, 74, of Mechanicsville, Va., died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, after being in a confused world of Alzheimer's for more than seven years, having the disease destroy a lifetime of memories for him and altering the lives of his family.

He was born June 15, 1934, son of the late John and Mary Rogers of Beacon, N.Y. Jack was a veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps. He retired from IBM after devoting 35 years of service.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Barbara; son Bill Rogers and his wife, Jenny; stepsons, Patrick Beall and his wife, Meta, and Jeff Beall and his wife, Kellie; also 5 grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at St. Catholic Church, 9420 Damascus Road, Damascus, MD 20872.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mrs. Edith Mae Alger

Edith Mae Alger, 84, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village in Boonsboro.

She was born Feb. 16, 1924 in Brunswick, and was the daughter of the late James Edward Devine and Sarah M. Mock Devine.

She was a retired clerk from the Newberry Store in Brunswick.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brunswick.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna Kay Tritapoe and husband, Brian, of Knoxville; one son, James E. Alger Jr. and wife, Dorothy, of LasCruces, N.M.; four grandchildren, Amy, Julia and Evan Tritipoe and Lisa Wentz and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Alger; one sister; and one brother.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, Brownsville, with Pastor Alan Smith officiating. Internment will be in Brownsville Heights cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Frederick. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, for the convenience of friends.

Mr. Clarence F. Speak Jr.

Clarence F. Speak Jr., J.R./ Junie Speak, loving husband and father, formerly of Frederick and Hagerstown, died Sept. 3, 2008, at his home in Ormond Beack, Fla., surrounded by his family after losing his battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Speak was born Jan. 12, 1932, in Frederick. He was the son of the late Clarence and Lillian Speak. He retired from Fairchild Industries in 1987, working in Germantown, Hagerstown and at Dulles Airport sites.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen F. (Kathy) Speak. His is also survived by two sons, Jerry F. Speak of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and Marty A. Speak and his wife, Shannon of Clear Spring; and one daughter, Tammy F. Baker and her husband, Rodney, of Hagerstown. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Ryan M. Dudley, of Lackland AFB, Texas; Brent T. Dudley of Hagerstown; Miranda N. Speak and Logan D. Speak of Clear Spring; and Lauren Speak of Agoura Hills, Calif.

He is also survived by three brothers, Delmar Speak, Thomas Speak and Robert Speak, all of Frederick; and two sisters, Gloria (Toots) McGlaun of Georgia, andPat Huntzberry of Frederick.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Speak and Donnie Speak. At his request, there will be no service.

Mrs. Cecelia Bowens

Cecelia Bowens, 82, of Baltimore, formerly of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Northwest Hospital.

Born on January 13, 1926, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late John and Cleaslea Keys Bowens.

She was retired as custodian from the U.S. Post Office.

She is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Melernea C. Frisby.

Funeral services will be held at the Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, on Wednesday at 1 pm. Interment will be in Westminster cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm. Please use the chapel entrance.

Mr. William Merriman

Mr. William "Jack" Mason Merriman of Jefferson, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008. He was the husband of Jennifer "Pearl" Merriman.

Mr. Merriman worked for the Montgomery County Government for 35 years, retiring in 2002 as fleet manager. Jack enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and especially his grand puppy "Sophie."

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Ashley Merriman of Frederick, his mother-in-law Mary Pearl of Jefferson, and his sisters-in-law Winifred Pearl of Jefferson, Evelyn Stephenson and husband Mark and Lana Crutchley and husband Michael all of Brunswick.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Avenue, Brunswick, where services will be held Tuesday, September 9 at 11:00 a.m.

Interment St. Mark's cemetery, Petersville.

Contributions may be expressed to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.

Mrs. Lydia Anzalone

Mrs. Lydia E. Anzalone, 77, of Frederick, died Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Rudolph D. "Rudy" Anzalone Sr.

Born Oct. 20, 1930 in Teaneck, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Evo Carlo and Alfrida Itro Antonini.

Mrs. Anzalone was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Daughters of the Nile and was a Past First Lady of Salaam Shriners.

She is survived by two sons, Mark Anzalone and Rudolph Anzalone Jr. and wife, Donna, both of Frederick; and her daughter, Karen Hoek and husband, John, of Sussex, N.J.; two grandchildren, Kristin and Laurel Kimball of Sussex, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Maretta Anzalone and Jean Antonini; and brother-in-law, Salvatore Anzalone. Many nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her brother, Evo Carlo Anzalone Jr. and her sister, Rose Marie Ministero.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the Stauffer Funeral Home Chapel, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

Contributions may be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 3229 Burnett Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095.
