Mr. John Snyder

John Pawling Snyder, 89, of Hanover, Pa., entered into God's care Thursday, July 17, 2008, at the Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center.

Born June 5, 1919 in Los Angeles, Calif., he was the son of the late John E. and Eva A. (Fridley) Snyder. He was the loving husband of 64 years of the late Dorothy T. Snyder who died Aug. 24, 2008.

Mr. Snyder retired from Sears Roebuck & Co., where he worked for 25 years in Los Angeles and Sacramento. Prior to that, he owned his own photography studio in Los Angeles. He attended the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena.

John was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hanover, Pa. as well as the Disabled American Veterans. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in the Navy OSS during World War II.

John is survived by two sons, Thomas P. Snyder, Ph.D. of Mount Prospect, Ill. and Donald E. Snyder, DDS of Clovis, Calif.; five granddaughters; and one brother, Ellsworth B. Snyder of LaPine, Ore.

A service to celebrate and remember both John's and Dorothy's lives will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 12, at the Homewood at Plum Creek Chapel, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, Pa., with the Rev. Joel Hummel officiating. Private burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Arrangements are by Kenworthy Funeral Home, 269 Frederick St., Hanover, Pa.

Mrs. Dorothy Snyder

Dorothy Olivia Thomas Snyder, 90, of Hanover, Pa., entered into God's eternal care Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at the Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center.

Born Feb. 20, 1918 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Elmer E. and Maude L. (Roderuck) Thomas. Dorothy was the loving wife of 64 years of the late John P. Snyder, who died July 17, 2008.

Mrs. Snyder was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hanover, Pa. She was an officer in the United States Navy having served as a nurse during World War II. She was a graduate of Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. where she received her registered nursing degree.

Dorothy is survived by two sons, Thomas P. Snyder, Ph.D. of Mount Prospect, Ill. and Donald E. Snyder, DDS of Clovis, Calif.; five granddaughters; and two sisters, Agnes Thomas of Williamsport and Geraldine Thomas of Hampstead.

Mrs. Deborah Hait

Mrs. Deborah Lillian Hait, 49, of Thurmont, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Patrick Alan Hait, whom she married Aug. 28, 2004.

Born July 28, 1959 in Hialeah, Fla., she was a daughter of Vera Lampert McDaniel of Clearwater, Fla. and the late Eugene Lloyd McDaniel.

Mrs. Hait was a member of the Frederick Christian Fellowship. She was a certified personal trainer with ISSA.

Surviving besides her mother and husband is a son, John McShannon of Frederick; three stepdaughters, Vanessa L. Wood and husband, Andrew, Alyson N. Hait and Marleah M. Hait, all of Frederick; a grandson, Aidyn M. Herr of Frederick; a sister, Cathy King and husband, Ed, of Clearwater, Fla.; and a brother, Eric E. McDaniel and wife, Mary Lou, of Georgetown, Texas. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the Grace Community Church, 5102 Old National Pike, Frederick, with Pastor Mike Brubaker officiating.

Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Hait to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 1877 GO Komen, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.

Mrs. Marion Bennett

Marion Bennett, 93, died Sept. 4, 2008, after a short fight with lung cancer. She was living with her daughter, Lisa/Betty Morse, in Vermont. Her husband, Melvin, passed away in 2007 after 67 years of marriage.

She is survived by two other daughters, Kathryn Dahlberg and Tricia Paul of Gaithersburg; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Marion was born in Waterville, Maine, and lived her adult years in Ontario, Canada, New Jersey and Maryland. She and Melvin moved to Chelsea, Vermont, in 2006.

She was always active in her local Methodist churches, often as leader of the women's society. As a volunteer for 30 years in community hospitals, Marion was a strong proponent of giving of time and love. She was an active member of PEO, a women's service organization, for 25 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick or any other charitable organization.

Mrs. Billie Blakesley

Mrs. Billie L. Blakesley, 83, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Ralph W. Blakesley, her husband of 63 years.

Born July 3, 1925, in Anaheim, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Robert G. and Dollie Fitzsimmons Goodwin.

Mrs. Blakesley was a member of the Brook Hill United Methodist Church. She was a licensed vocational nurse at the Fullerton Community Hospital for 10 years in California. She was very active, for almost 30 years, with the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, working in the emergency room, other units in the hospital and also with Select Seconds. She was also a volunteer with the Red Cross for many years. Mrs. Blakesley loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Robert Blakesley and wife, Debbie, of Frederick, and Donald Blakesley and wife, Sherry, of Mercer, Pa.; four grandchildren, Brian, Michael, Jennifer and Kristin Blakesley; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Spring Road, Frederick. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be expressed to the American Diabetes Assoc., 1701 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311.

Arrangements by are Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. James Frisby

James Arthur Frisby, 80, of Westminster, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at the Carroll Hospital Center.

Born Oct. 2, 1927 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late John Arthur and Beatrice Summers Frisby. He was the husband of the late Melernea C. Ambush Frisby, who predeceased him in October 2007.

For more than 50 years, he was a cook/chef for Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, watching the Orioles, Ravens and basketball. He also enjoyed family gatherings and cookouts and was a member of the Union Memorial Baptist Church.

He is survived by children, Colleen McClain of Randallstown, Nathan Frisby of Baltimore County and Cecilia Bowens, Timothy, Wayne, Edward, Patricia and Kevin Frisby, all of Westminster, and Jeanette McCory of Gywnn Oak; siblings, Agnes Blake of Georgia, Dorothy Smith of Union Bridge, Harriet Hill of New Windsor, Charlotte Willis of Taylorsville, John Frisby of Westminster, Frances Dalton of Baltimore and Barbara Outen of Philadelphia, Pa.; grandchildren, Joey, Boyd, Nathan, Chazma, Travis, Marcus, Kierra, Tristynn, Cody, Corey, Jeremy, Theresa and Derrick; five great-grandchildren; adopted daughters, Marie Isaac, Grace Stewart and Tracey Battle; and caregiver, Iantha Costley. He was predeceased in 1995 by son, Arthur Frisby; sisters, Mary Dorm and Carolyn Ross; and by sister-in-law, Cecelia Bowens, who died Sept. 3, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, at the Westminster United Methodist Church, 162 E. Main St., Westminster, with Pastor Jamie Green officiating. Interment will be in Westminster cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Wayne Frisby, 28 Charles St., Westminster, MD 21157.

Mrs. Carolyn Wars

Carolyn Sims Wars, 63, of New Windsor, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at the Carroll Hospital Center.

Born Dec. 19, 1944, in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Walter A. Sims Sr. and Lamore Wilson Sims. She was the wife of Hyland "Rabbit" Elmer Wars Jr. for 44 years.

She was a 1962 graduate of Robert Moton High School. She was a member of the Union Street United Methodist Church where she had served as a member of the PPRC, Nomination, Scholarship and Finance Committee. She also was a member of the Sisters of Joy at Asbury United Methodist Church in Frederick.

Surviving in addition to her husband are daughter, Dorothea L. Wars of Lexington Park; son, Dannel Wars Sr. of Long Branch, N.J.; granddaughters, Keshawn Cartnail of Westminster and Candice Frisby of New Windsor, Dayshana Gary and Leighaira Wars, both of New Jersey; grandson, Desmond Wars of New Windsor and Dannel Wars Jr. of New Jersey; great-granddaughter, Nylah M. Craig, Westminster; brother, Eugene T. Sims of Baltimore; sisters, Mary Jane Duppins and Joan E. Edelen, both of Westminster, Elaine Pierre of Baltimore; and a host of family and friends. She was predeceased by siblings, William L. Sims, Richard O. Sims, Marion A. Jason, Nelson L. Sims Sr., James L. Sims Sr., Walter A. Sims Jr. and Irvin D. Sims.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Westminster United Methodist Church, 162 E. Main St., Westminster, with the Rev. Daryl A. Foster and the Rev Robert E. Walker, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

Mr. Charles Fowler

Charles Francis "Chuck" Fowler, 72, of Westminster, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness.

Born Aug. 16, 1936, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Raymond N. and Emma Dulany Fowler. He was the husband of Shirley Blacksten Fowler, his wife of 53 years.

He graduated from Westminster High School, Class of 1954. After graduation he joined the Marine Corps, where he served during the Korean Conflict as sergeant, flight equipment officer and parachute rigger. He made several jumps during that time. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1958.

In January of 1959, he graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy and was stationed at various locations. He spent most of his time in Carroll County before retiring after 22 years of service in 1981 as First Sergeant. He served as a bailiff in the Carroll County Court System from 1982 to 1990.

He continued his law enforcement career in 1990 as chief deputy with the Sheriff's Office in Carroll County, retiring in 1998. In 1999, he started working with FEMA and the National Disaster Medical System out of Washington. During that time he worked at numerous locations in the U.S. including New York 9/11, Pennsylvania crash sites, and sites in Louisiana, California and Florida.

He retired in February 2007 after being diagnosed with cancer. He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of the Maryland State Police Alumni, the National Sheriff's Association, a lifetime member of the Maryland Sheriff's Association, the Westminster Moose Lodge 1381, the Molleville Farm Post VFW 476, the Carroll County Marine Corps League 896, the Westminster Elks Lodge 2277, the American Legion Carroll Post 031, the Littlestown Eagles Aerie Post 2226 and was on the board of directors and past president for the Maryland Sheriff's Youth Ranch.

He also owned and operated Chuck's Charter, a fishing charter service out of Crisfield. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles and playing cards.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughter and son-in-law, Teresa (Terry) and Harvey Meininger of Westminster; son and daughter-in-law, William (Bill) and Donna Fowler of Upperco; granddaughters, Holly Naill and Crystal Meininger; grandson, Joshua Meininger; great-granddaughter, Brianna Naill; step-granddaughter, Rachel Heagy; and mother-in-law, Bessie Blacksten. He was predeceased by siblings Dorothy Long, Rosalie Tears, June Green, Noah, Raymond "Bud, " William and James Herb Fowler. He was the last of his immediate family.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at the Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with the Rev. Dr. Frederick P. Eckhardt officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery in Uniontown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home and one hour prior to service on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157 or to the Pleasant Valley Fire Department, 2030

Mr. Martin Castle Sr.

"Pete" "Pappy" Martin Edward Castle Sr., 63, of Frederick, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Kline Hospice House in Frederick, due to a brief illness with cancer.

Born Jan. 9, 1945, in Frederick, he was the son of late Pauline Castle.

Pete began his first job working with his family on the farm, after graduation he went to work at the Corning Plant in Frederick. He later built trucks for the telephone company at General Cable. He was maintenance mechanic at Bioqual Industries in Rockville and Fort Richie Military site. He retired in January 2007 from the Frederick County Jail in the maintenance department.

He was a member of the Maryland Saltwater Fisherman's Association Frederick Chapter, Potomac Fish and Game Club in Hagerstown and Trails Ends Campground in Chincoteague, Va. Pete will always be remembered for his hard work, dedication, commitments and especially loyalty to his friends, family, neighbors and his dog, Pooh.

He was an avid fisherman; it was not a good day at fishing unless "Pete caught the first fish." He was "Pappy" to his grandsons and all their friends, providing them with guidance and wisdom.

Mr. Castle is survived by his wife, Robin Castle, of Monrovia; his son, Martin Edward Castle Jr.; two grandsons, James and Scott Castle; his aunt, Mary A. Stull and husband, H. Lamar, of Walkersville; cousins, Becky Stull, Chuck Stull and Mark Stull; his niece, Jana Marie Cornell; his sister-in-law, Kathey E. Mullen; brother-in-law, James W. Corley; mother-in-law, Erma G. Corley; and daughter-in-law, Tammy McCormack and husband, Jason McCormack; his best friend, Rick Etzler and wife, Glenda Etzler, Brian Etzler, Brett Etzler, Edward and Mona Meely, Charles King, Robbie and Bob Pellicot, Gordon Jernigan; and many other loving family and friends.

Mr. Castle was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Seward Castle; his mother, Pauline LaRue Castle; a cousin, Kathy King; and a dear friend, Suzanne Beans.

Visitation with family and friends will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, from the funeral home. The Rev. Burnis D. Barrett will officiate. Interment will be at the Resthaven cemetery, Frederick.

Pallbearers will be Rick Etzler, Brian Etzler, Mike Beans, Robert Pellicot, Edward Cornell, Edward Meely, Jason Meely, Shane Meely, Chuck Stull, Charles King, Bruno Nicknadarvick and Jason McCormack.

There will a celebration of Pete's life from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 12, at the Mount Pleasant Ruritan; directions will be provided at the funeral home.
