Mrs. Elizabeth Schiess

Elizabeth Schiess died Aug. 24, 2008, at Calvert Memorial Hospital.

She was born Elizabeth Picard in Meridian, Miss. in 1913, spending her early years in Newton. She later moved to Denver, Colo., where she married Henry Schiess and her daughter, Cynthia, was born. They later moved to Washington, D.C., and after 10 years to Woodsboro.

Together with her husband and daughter, she formed Cynthia Fehr Antiques, opening a shop in New Market and subsequently, Georgetown, D.C.

She worked at the Atomic Energy Commission in Germantown until retirement when, with her husband, she ran the shop and exhibited in shows from Maine to Texas. They often traveled to England on buying trips.

In 1985 they moved to Spout Farm in Lusby, where her husband died. She continued exhibiting at antique shows until 1995 when she ended the business. She then spent most of her time gardening on the property and caring for stray animals.

In 2003, she was admitted to Solomon's Nursing Center where she spent the remainder of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Fehr.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pets with Disabilities of Prince Frederick or a Calvert Co. Animal Shelter of choice.

Arrangements are by Rausch Funeral Home, P.A., Lusby.

Mrs. Susan Richards

Susan Leigh Richards, 65, of Walkersville, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was predeceased by her parents, John S. and Ann Bartlett Weld, and by her brother, Timothy. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Moore; her son, Christopher Richards of Tucson; stepdaughter, Cathy and Tim Smith of Buffalo; and brothers, Jonathan Weld and Noel and Maury Brooks of New York City, and Jeremy and Linda Weld of Anchorage.

She grew up in Maine, N.Y., and graduated with a B.A. from Wells College and an M.S. in marine biology from McGill University in Montreal. She held research positions at the Buffalo, N.Y. Veterans Administration Hospital, East Carolina University Medical School, and Fort Detrick. She was also a computer programmer at Sherikon Corp. in Frederick.

She was active in the Niagara Frontier Bicycle Club, the Frederick Chorale, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick. She participated in the 1964 Voter Registration Drive in Mississippi, and was active in several peace groups and women's rights activities.

There will be a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, 4880 Elmer Derr Road, Frederick. Directions can be obtained at www.frederickUU.org/

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Susan's name to the UU Congregation of Frederick.

Mr. Donald Hoen

Donald C. Hoen, 61, of Ocean City, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret A. Hoen, in 2007.

He is survived by his parents, Ralph and Alice Hoen of Berlin; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer H. Dotson and Daniel M. Dotson of New Market; his son and daughter-in-law, Christoper D. And Jennifer A. Hoen of Bishopville; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Timothy, Chase, Cameron, Piper and Payton Dotson of New Market and Caitlyn and Baylor Hoen of Bishopville. Additional survivors include his sisters, Lelia H. Masachi of Timonium, Susan H. Hoen of Towson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. A mass of Christian burial will be offered Friday. Location and time of mass will be provided at a later date.

Interment will be held Saturday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus cemetery in Baltimore.

Mr. Paul Kemp

Paul Calvert Kemp, 87, of Friends Cove, Pa., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

Born June 10, 1921, in Daisy, he was the youngest son of the late John Daniel Frances Kemp and Clara Virginia (Knill) Kemp. Mr. Kemp was also preceded in death by five brothers and their spouses, William and Leona Kemp; Frances Kemp; Victor and Margie Kemp; Samuel and Stella Kemp, and Donald and Anna Kemp. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A United States Army Veteran during World War II serving from 1942 to 1945 in the European Theatre, Paul was a sergeant first class heavy wrecker operator and was a first class gunner machine gun expert in the 705th Ordinance Light Company. On Oct. 30, 1948, he married the love of his life, Mary Alice Gaither, in Frederick.

Paul grew up on a farm and was a farmer at heart all of his life. He made his living as a commercial steam fitter and was an active member of the Steam Fitters Union Local #602 in Washington, D.C., since 1955.

Paul ran his own business, Kemp Heating Company, from 1956 until he retired at the end of 1978. He put the heating plant in many schools, apartment, and government buildings in the greater Washington, D.C., area, including the Washington, D.C. Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints.

Paul and his wife, Mary Alice made their home on their farm in Boyds, from 1950 to 1979, and later on their farm in the Cumberland Valley from 1979 to 1993 raising Black Angus cattle until they moved to Friends Cover in 1993.

Paul is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Alice Kemp; his daughter, Susan "Susi" K. Jolley and her husband, Edward "Bill" III, of Manns Choice, Pa.; his son, Daniel M. Kemp and his wife, Ann, of Cumberland Valley, Pa.; and his only grandchild, Mary Helen (Jolley) Tichnell and her husband, Andrew, of Cumberland Valley, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com).

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the funeral home, with Pastor Todd Pejack officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Interment will be at the Maryland Veterans' cemetery at Rocky Gap.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Reverend Jack Samuel Scholarship Fund, c/o Yeager Memorial Lutheran Church, 7945 Main Road, Bedford, PA 15522.

Dr. Harold Neufeld

Dr. Harold "Hal" Alex Neufeld, 84, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at Northampton Manor. He was the husband of Shirley Y. (Lazerowitz) Neufeld, who were married in 1950.

Born in Paterson, N.J. March 23, 1924, he was a son of the late Meyer and Helen (Stein) Neufeld. Dr. Neufeld was a 1942 graduate of Eastside High in Paterson and attended Rutgers University before enlisting in the United States Army during World War II. He served in the signal corps in Central Europe and the Rhineland before his honorable discharge in 1946.

He later returned to Rutgers and received his bachelors degree in chemistry in 1949. He then served as a research fellow with the Department of Biochemistry and received his doctorate from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Professionally, Dr. Neufeld was a research biochemist at Fort Detrick from 1955 until his retirement in 1983. He also was a part-time faculty member at Frederick Community College, where he lectured in chemistry from 1956 to 1970; and a graduate lecturer in biochemistry at Hood College from 1974-1977. He later returned as adjunct professor of organic chemistry and astronomy at Frederick Community College from 1985 until 1994.

He had also been an instructor of science at Gov. Thomas Johnson Junior High School. Dr. Neufeld had been honored with federal recognition numerous times including the Sustained Superior Performance Awards in 1954 and 1981; Exceptional Performand Award in 1981; and the Commander's Award from USMRIID in June 1983.

He was a long time active member of Beth Sholom Congregation, Frederick and Dr. Nuefeld was honored for his civic work and was named 1960 Man of the Year, Frederick Chapter, Junior Chamber of Commerce; was a charter member of the Frederick County Human Relations Council and 1979-1980 Volunteer of the Year with the Frederick County YMCA.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Howard Neufeld and wife, Claudia, of Boone, N.C., Kenneth Neufeld and wife, Karen, of Frederick, Marjorie Barber and husband, Donald, of Frederick, Matthew Neufeld, of Greenbelt; eight grandchildren, Joshua Neufeld and wife, Amy, Julie Stotler and husband, David, Staci Neufeld, Ross Neufeld, Lisa Barber, Gabriela Neufeld, Donald Barber and wife, Lisa, and Amy Barber; one great-grandchild, Kayden Glotfelty. Dr. Neufeld was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Donald Neufeld.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, from the Beth Sholom Community Center, 1011 N. Market St., Frederick. Rabbi Morris Kosman will be officiating.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. The family will be observing Shiva on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at their home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the Beth Sholom Early Childhood Center, 1011 N. Market St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Mr. William Hungerford Jr.

Mr. William Roger "Billy" Hungerford Jr., of Mount Airy, died suddenly Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at his residence.

Born May 26, 1956 in Olney, he was a son of Ruby Coleman Hungerford Adams, of Piedmont, S.C., and of the late William Roger Hungerford Sr.

Billy attended Damascus High School. He enjoyed fishing with his brothers and was well versed with his job as a heavy equipment operator. Currently Billy was employed with R.A. Kelley of Gaithersburg and was previously employed by Hungerford Brothers, Boyds.

Surviving besides his mother are two sons, Jesse and Joshua (Hungerford) Keith, both of Frederick County; six siblings, Teresa F. Walker of New Market, Deborah G. Melton and husband, Ben, of Damascus, Robert L. Hungerford of Brunswick, John Joseph Hungerford and wife, Aubrey, of Frederick, and Barbara Jean Hungerford of Beallsville; and step-mother, Jeannye Hungerford, also of Beallsville.

Besides his father, Billy was preceded in death by brother, Michael Wayne Hungerford.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Billy's uncle, the Rev. Allen B. Hungerford will officiate. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Hazel Shriner

Mrs. Hazel P. Shriner, 93, formerly of Thurmont, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at Scotland Memorial Hospital, Laurinburg, N.C. She was the wife of the late Edgar Joseph Shriner Sr. Hazel moved to Maxton, N.C., with her daughter, Patricia in 2001.

Born Sept. 3, 1915, in Thurmont, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. And Cora Mae (Isanogle) Humerick.

She was Christened and attended the United Brethren Church until she married and moved to Baltimore, where she attended the Curtis Bay United Methodist Church . She was also a member of Weller United Methodist Church, Thurmont. Her employment included Thurmont Canning Factory, Hooper's Mills and a Dry Cleaners, both in Baltimore. Hazel enjoyed collecting light houses, crocheting, sewing, bowling and her Baltimore Orioles. Of most importance to her was her family, sharing her time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and traveling over the United States.

Mrs. Shriner is survived by six children, Robert Lee Humerick and wife, Louise, of Knoxville, James Clifford Humerick and wife, Carol, of Thurmont, Edgar Joseph Shriner Jr. and wife, Norma, of North Port, Fla., Patricia Ann Shriner Locklear and husband, Adrian, of Maxton, N.C., Harold Michael Shriner and wife, Cheryl, of Hanover, Gerald Wayne Shriner and wife, Mary, of Union, W.Va.; a step-daughter, Elizabeth L. ( Betty Lou ) Shriner of Baltimore; one sister, Pauline Virginia Humerick Grimes of Thurmont; 15 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers; Caroll Lee and Earl William Humerick.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a..m. Saturday, with the Rev. Richard C. Broome officiating. Pallbearers will be David Humerick, Jim Humerick Jr., Kevin Locklear, Jeff Shriner, Jerry Shriner Jr., Scott Shriner, Charles Hecker and Less Ingram .

Interment in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

Mrs. Doris Carlton

Doris E. Carlton, 78, of Sanford, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008.

Doris was a former long-time resident of Walkersville.

She is survived by daughters, Kathryn Lowrey and husband, Michael, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Rebecca Carlton of Casselberry, Fla.; granddaughters, Jessica Robinson of Hagerstown, Jennifer Kemner of Inwood, W.Va., and Hannah Carlton of Casselberry, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rowan Carlton, and her son, David Kingston.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Walkersville. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Sara Mullinix

Sara Jane Wilson Mullinix of Poplar Springs, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia.

Born April 5, 1934, in Mount Airy, she was the daughter of the late Edgar E. and Eva M.Wilson. She was the wife of the late Robert A. Mullinix, Sr. who died in 1990.

Known as Sally to her family and friends, she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved celebrating and decorating for the many holidays. She enjoyed being a homemaker throughout her life and was an excellent cook and baker winning many champion and blue ribbons for her entries at the Howard County Fair. She previously worked with her husband in their family business, Woodbine General Mart, up until 1981. She enjoyed traveling with her sister, Ruth and brother-in-law, Hugh. On her travels she visited Australia and New Zealand, a cruise through the Panama Canel and a National Park tour. Disney World was also a favorite spot to visit with family and friends.

She is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, R. Allen, Jr.and Sue Mullinix of Mount Airy and Thomas L. Mullinix of Mount Airy; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah K. and Jim Wilk of Ellicott City; grandchildren, Hillary and Justin Wilk, Robbie, Donnie, Patrick, Steve and Blake Mullinix; great-grandson, Mack Mullinix. She was predeceased by her son, Steven W. Mullinix and sister, Ruth W. Jenkins. Also survived by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Howard County Fair Assn, 2210 Fairground Rd, West Friendship, MD 21794 or to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company, 702 North Main Street, Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Mrs. Kathleen Cramer

Mrs. Kathleen Harriet Cramer, 86, of Mount Pleasant, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at her home. She was the loving wife of the late Edward Lambert Cramer Sr., who died in 1995.

Mrs. Cramer was born in Frederick, Nov. 6, 1921, and she was a daughter of the late Joshua Eli and Pansie Harriet Shankle Murphy.

She was a homemaker for most of her life and a member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren and the Home Builders Sunday School Class. She will be remembered as a loving and caring, wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving her are three children, Edward L. Cramer Jr., and wife, Barbara, of Mount Pleasant, James W. Cramer and wife, Judy, of Walkersville and Carol Ann Benton and husband, Harry of Fairplay; sister-in-law, Betty Cramer, of Frederick; eight grandchildren, Jeremy Curry, Christina Clark, Virginia Clifford, James W. Cramer, Jr., Lauren Cramer, Stephanie Boyer, Shannon Humphreys and Josh Benton; and nine great-grandchildren. She will be remembered by a special friend who is like a sister, Betty Reese Eyler, of Libertytown. Mrs. Cramer was preceded in death by a brother, who was killed in World War II, Joshua E. Murphy Jr.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, , at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Wallace A. Lusk, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mrs. Barbara Shankle

Barbara Lynn Shankle, age 43, of Walkersville, passed away Thursday, Sept., 11, 2008, at her mother's home in Frederick. She was the loving wife, of Mr. Gary Shankle of Walkersville.

Born Aug. 21, 1965, in Frederick, she was the daughter of Randall Wayne and Virginia Irene Boone.

Mrs. Shankle worked for 18 years doing research for the National Cancer Institute at Fort Detrick. In her free time, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchild, family cook outs and swimming. She had hoped to live to see 10 grandchildren, five from each of her daughters. Barbara liked to gossip and was always up to mischief. Additionally, she loved going to Charles Town, going on cruises, and reading, most notably romance novels.

In addition to her husband and her parents Mrs. Shankle, is also survived by her two daughters, Karen Saylor, and husband, Brandon, of Frederick, and Kimberly Harrison, and her husband, Joshua, of Frederick. She was the grandmother of Kami Harrison; also surviving is a brother, Randall Wayne Boone Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Buckeystown. She will also be remembered by her grandmother, Ruth Oden, of Frederick and her step-grandmother, Charlotte Boone, of Frederick. Additionally, she is survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be remembered and missed by Peter Johnson and all of her other coworkers at the National Cancer Institute at Fort Detrick. Barbara is preceded in death by her brother, James L. Boone.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, and from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Keeney & Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home . The interment will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. The Rev. Dorothy A. Lundgren will officiate.
