Mrs. Louellen Powell

Louellen (Lou) Vrahiotes Powell, 83, died Aug. 10, 2008, after gracefully enduring a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of Dr. Albert M. Powell Jr. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and close friends.

Lou Powell was born July 24, 1925, in Washington, D.C., to Greek immigrant parents, Maria and Aristides (Harry) Vrahiotes. She was raised with her older sister, Helen, and younger brother, Peter. Lou learned Greek as a child and continued to speak it fluently throughout her life, much to the delight of her family.

She attended Roosevelt High School, then earned a bachelor's degree in sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Lou completed extension studies in education at Johns Hopkins University and, later in life, a master's degree in education at College Park, specializing in family mediation. She was a proud Terp who supported both academics and athletics at her alma mater, though she could not always watch the final minutes of a close basketball game.

Lou applied her education to work as a nurturing first grade teacher in Baltimore City and at Waverly and Wolfsville Elementary Schools in Frederick County. Pursuing her love for children and families, she later developed a family mediation practice to assist parents with the difficult passages of separation and divorce. Her kindness, knowledge, and professionalism helped people of all ages.

Lou especially will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and Nonnie. She met her husband, Al, when he was in medical school and shared the joys and rigors of his practice in pediatrics and child psychiatry. Together, they built a home of full of love, fun, and encouragement.

Memories of Lou are cherished by her family: son, Michael and wife, Barbara, of Frederick and their children, Chelsea, Stephen, and Anne; daughter, Lynn West and husband, Thomas, of Roseboro, N.C. and their children, Matthew (wife, Marissa), Patrick, and Andrew (partner, Danya and their children, Irie and Willow); son, Gregory and wife, Deborah, of Frederick and their children, Colleen, Daniel, and Katharine; daughter, Elizabeth Pollack and husband, Thomas, of Frederick and their son, Jonathan; and son, Eric and wife, Liliane, of Singapore and their children, Phillip and Frederick. She will also be remembered by relatives, Patricia and William Grove of Frederick, the Vrahiotes family, and many close friends. All felt "Mama Lou's" warmth in every hug and every bowl of vegetable beef soup.

Lou's love of people and life found expression in many ways. She volunteered for the Frederick Memorial Hospital, the Salvation Army, and numerous PTAs. Along with friends, she opened the first gift shop at Schifferstadt. Lou was a master flower arranger who participated actively with the Green-Walled Garden Club. She hosted great dinner parties and family gatherings. An outstanding cook in any cuisine, her Greek meals were always special.

Lou's humor, indomitable spirit, beauty, and generosity — her goodness of heart — will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the The Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 W. Church St., Frederick. A reception at the church will follow. Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lou's honor to The Willows Fund — Homewood at Frederick care of the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
