Mr. Conrad Link

Conrad B. Link, Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at the University of Maryland, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at home in Gaithersburg.

Born March 5, 1912, in Western New York, he was the son of Conrad and Mae Barnett Link.

A graduate of Ohio State University, he was on the faculty of Penn State, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the University of Maryland. He was a 75-year member of the American Society of Horticulture Science and a charter member of University United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was survived by beloved wife of 59 years, Kathleen Barber Link; father of Helen Chang, Leora (Michael) Caporaletti and the Rev. Conrad O. (Catherine) Link. He was the brother of Dorothy (John) Fitch and the late Leonard (Emeline) Link. Also survived by nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life memorial service Friday at The Guild Chapel, Asbury Methodist Village, 201 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with the service beginning at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Foundation, University United Methodist Church, 3621 Campus Drive, College Park, MD 20740. Interment will be private.

Mr. James Dove Sr.

James Allen Dove Sr., 71, of Frederick, was called to heaven Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Jim was the recipient of a heart transplant 15 years ago at Johns Hopkins, for the last five years he was a regular at dialysis in Frederick three days a week.

Mr. Dove was the son of the late Herbert Dove and Charlotte Runion Dove. Born June 15, 1937, in Gaithersburg. He was raised by Charlotte and his late stepfather, Woodrow (Pud) Dove. He was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School and an advocate of continual learning.

Jim Dove retired from both Suburban Trust Company after 22 years and from Montgomery County Government after more than 19 years. He was a member and past president of both the National Association of Power Engineers (N.A.P.E.) Chapter 5 and the Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends by phone, working on the computer, video taping and recording family. He enjoyed keeping up with news of his cousins, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was previously married to Betty Lou Windsor (deceased) and Jeanne Derato.

Survivors include his companion of 10 years, Shirley Grant; daughter, Brenda Dove Ernst of Winchester, Va.; son, James (Jamie) Allen Dove Jr. of Wardensville, W.Va.; and daughters, Denise Dove Alderman of Delray, W.Va. and Deanne Ingrid Dove of Winchester, Va.; three brothers, Larry Dove of Monrovia, Mike Dove of Walkersville and Ronald (Ronnie) Dove of Quicksburg, Va.; grandchildren, Jeremy Dove, Jessica Ernst, Katie Ernst, James Heath, Eddie Ray Heath, Stephen Denu, Karen Goodwin, Josey Iler and Delilah Rivera; great-grandchildren, Veronica Dove, Jaden Denu, James Heath Jr., E.J. Heath, Devin Heath, Drake Heath and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. The funeral service will follow. Interment at St. Luke's cemetery, Derwood.

Mrs. Arbutus Spring

Arbutus Spring, 85, of Lucketts, Va., died Sept. 11, 2008, at Loudoun Hospital.

Mrs. Spring was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Lucketts, to the late Ode and Virgie Frye.

She was a devoted housewife and loving mother. She enjoyed working outside and tending to her flowers and her yard. And she also enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.

Mrs. Spring was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Spring Sr., and a daugher, Rosie Lee Roles, Winchester, Va.

Survivors include one daughter, Patty Benfield of Brunswick; one son, Ralph T. Spring Jr. of Brunswick; two brothers, Jimmy Frye and Kenny Frye; five sisters, Marie Lawson, Goldie Bates, Violet Cooper, Francis Austin and Helen Funk; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a special dear friend, Abe Kesner of Lucketts.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Colonial Funeral Home. A service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, with burial to follow at Union cemetery.

Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 124 Park St., SE, Vienna, VA 22180-0699 or the Lucketts Volunteer Fire Company, 423676 Lucketts Road, Lucketts, VA, 20176.

Mr. James Waldron Sr.

Mr. James Robert Waldron Sr., 82, of Thurmont, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at his son's residence in Martinsburg, W.Va. He was the husband of Opal Mae Blankenship Waldron, who died Feb. 12, 2006.

Born Nov. 10, 1925, in Jolo, W.Va., a son of the late Gus and Viola Bailey Waldron.

Mr. Waldron attended the Catoctin Church of Christ in Thurmont. He had been employed as a coal miner for 21 years and as a truck driver for 26 years.

Surviving are four sons, Roger Lee Waldron and wife, Rebecca, of Colonial Heights, Va., James Robert Waldron Jr. and wife, Merrill, of Hampton, Va., Jerry Lynn Waldron and wife, Connie, of Thurmont, and Bruce Dwayne Waldron Sr. and wife, Virginia, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Cecil Waldron and wife, Sis, of Princeton W.Va., Johnny Waldron, and Ray Waldron and wife, Freeda, all of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Clifford Waldron and wife, Nancy, of Dumfries, Va. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont; services will follow with the Rev. Dr. Carroll A. Doggett Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Waldron to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784.

Mr. Galen Eyler

Mr. Galen Ray "Jake" "Jakie" Eyler, 78, of Walkersville, died suddenly, near his home, Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008.

Born Aug. 8, 1930, in Walkersville, he was the son of the late James Albert and Anna Mary Irene Keeney Eyler.

Mr. Eyler was a dairy farmer for almost 50 years on the Zimmerman dairy farm on Daysville Road until his retirement. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, enjoyed playing dominos with family and friends, taking care of wildlife; feeding the birds and squirrels and taking care of his cats. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and he will be dearly missed by all.

He is survived by one brother, Harry Eyler and wife, Mary, of Woodsboro; one sister, Peggy D. Eyler of Walkersville; one brother-in-law, George Ruthvin of Frederick; a special niece, Bonnie S. Snyder and husband, Jim, of Libertytown; one special great-niece, Nicole L. Norwood and husband, Robbie, of Thurmont; one special great-great-niece, Cheyenne V. Norwood of Thurmont; one niece, Nancy Bradley and husband, Paul, of Jefferson; four nephews, Wayne Eyler of Woodsboro, Kenny Eyler and wife, Mildred, of Falling Waters, W.Va., Gary Eyler of Libertytown and Hayes Ruthvin Jr. of Frederick; and two special cousins, Gary and Joyce Young of Walkersville. Many great nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He will also be remembered by special friends and neighbors Johannah Zimmerman, Ryan Zimmerman and family, Connie Roderuck and family, Sonny Zimmerman, Joann and Emerson Burrier and many more friends. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Wilma "Boots" Eyler, Hallie Ruthvin, Pauline Eyler and Alice Eyler; two brothers, Roland "Tom" Eyler and Rudell "Shorty" Eyler; and one sister-in-law, Louise Eyler.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, with Rev. Jerry Cline officiating.

Interment will be held at Rocky Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Julia Flook

Julia Naomi Flook, 51, of Ijamsville, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She was the wife of John D. Flook. They were married Aug. 18, 1979, and were married for 29 years.

Born Nov. 2, 1956, in Frederick, she was the daughter of Glenn Brubaker of Ijamsville and the late Bertie Bussard Brubaker.

She was a member of the Bush Creek Church of the Brethren in Monrovia and attended Locust Grove Church of the Brethren in Mount Airy. She graduated from Prospect Hall High School. She previously worked for the Maryland State Highway Administration and she was employed with the Frederick County Board of Education Food Service.

She was a member of the Urbana Fire Department. She loved and admired her new grandson, crafts, quilting, knitting and going to livestock auctions. She had a great love for her farm animals, especially her goats.

In addition to her loving husband, John, and her father, Glenn, she is survived by her two daughters, Jodie Grove and husband, Daniel, of Frederick, Jessica Flook of Ijamsville; one grandson, Jackson Grove of Frederick; a sister, Ruth B. Cline of Frederick; and her numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Bertie Bussard Brubaker; a sister, Daisy Brubaker; and her brother-in-law, Ronald Cline.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, 4821 Green Valley Road, Monrovia, with Rev. Wayne Hall, Rev. Wallace Lusk and Rev. Charles Beekly officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery at the Bush Creek Church.

The family wants to give a special thanks to Dr. Kanan Hudhud and all of the nurses and staff at the Frederick Cancer Care Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Mr. Joseph Reid

Mr. Joseph W. Reid, 47, of Walkersville, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick.

He was the loving husband of Cathy Reid.

Born March 4, 1961, in Washington, D.C., Joe was the son of the late Jay Herbert and Virginia Helen Galliher Reid.

Surviving besides his wife is one daughter, Monica Stevens of Walkersville; three brothers, Jack Reid of Beallsville, Jay Reid of Charlestown, W.Va., Jim Reid of Laurel; and one sister, Cynthia Reid of Bowie.

The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, MD 20838.

Internment will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Oliver Clark

Oliver M. "Buddy" Clark, 86, of Silver Spring, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.

He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy V. Clark; father of Carol M. Andre; father-in-law of Ronald E. Andre; brother-in-law of Ann Clark and Elizabeth Doyle; grandfather of Karen L. (Darren C.) Ritter, Brian C. (Christine E.) Andre and Kristen M. Andre; great-grandfather of Jordan Chandler, Justin Clark and Jensen Christine Ritter; brother of the late Edward K. and Joseph C. Clark.

Buddy was an avid golfer and a member of Argyle Country Club for 61 years. Relatives and friends may call from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 10103 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, where mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. Interment St. John's cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Home Care & Hospice, 11800 Tech Road, Suite 240, Silver Spring, MD 20904.

Arrangements are by Collins Funeral Home.

Mr. Robert Parker

Mr. Robert Wayne Parker, of New Market, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008. Born July 24, 1925, in Middletown, Ohio, he was son of the late John and Hortence Parker.

Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ethel Theo (Smith) Parker and is survived by his longtime companion, Ruth Scurto. He was the loving father of Gary W. Parker Sr. and wife Darlene, and the late Stephen Parker. He was the grandfather of Gary W. Parker Jr. and wife Dee and Stephanie Parker of Enid, Okla.; and the great-grandfather of Meagan, Trey and Seth Parker. Mr. Parker is also survived by brothers, Tip Parker and wife Phyllis of Long Island, N.Y. and John Parker and wife Liz of Havre de Grace and sister, Dorothy Drier of Pelham, N.H.

He served his country during World War II by enlisting in the United States Navy, later becoming a life member of AMVETS, VFW and the Woodsboro American Legion. Mr. Parker worked as a Medical Cataloger for the United States Department of Defense.

After his retirement from the DoD, he remained active in the community by serving as a councilman for the town of New Market. Mr. Parker also worked part-time at Lake Linganore and at Bio-Whittaker. He and his wife enjoyed gardening, canning the many fruits and vegetables they grew together. They traveled throughout their entire lives, both with their children and later as just the two of them.

After Mrs. Parker's passing, he found companionship in Ruth Scurto, who gave him love and devotion right up to his final days.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Bishop officiating.

Interment will be at Prospect cemetery, Mount Airy. A reception will follow interment at the Mount Airy VFW Post 2019, 691 W. Lebanon St, Mount Airy.

Mr. Earl Cline

Earl C. "Buzz" Cline, 76, of Woodsboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Jane Cline.

Born in Old Braddock Oct. 15, 1931, he was a son of the late Ira and Mary M. Cline. He had attended Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Airy and attended Bible study with Pastor Chris Libengood.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet Vaughan and husband, Gary, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Brenda Blank and husband, Donnie, of Middletown; three sons, Donald Cline and wife, Linda, of Middletown, Kenny Cline of San Antonio, and David Cline and wife, Kathy, of Middletown; seven grandchildren, Stacy Stream, Donna Blank, Crystal Brandenburg, Donny Cline, Danny Cline, Chrissy Cline, Michelle MiJangaes; six great-grandchildren, Nelson Stream III, Devin Stream, Sara Stream, Travis Brandenburg, Mason Cline, Briana MiJangaes; and one sister, Mildred Cline of Middletown.

Friends may call anytime Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, in Harmony Church of the Brethren cemetery, Myersville. Pastor Chris Libengood will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Donald Cline, 4602 Pinewood Trail, Middletown, MD 21769.

Pallbearers will be: Donnie Cline, David Cline, Kenny Cline, Donnie Blank, Larry Brandenburg, and Nelson Stream Jr.

He was predeceased by a son, Robert Cline.

Mrs. Doris Zimmerman

Doris Jean Zimmerman, 74, of Frederick, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at the Kline Hospice House of Mount Airy.

Born July 9, 1934 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Monroe and Ruth Elizabeth Jones Zimmerman.

Ms. Zimmerman was a lifelong resident of the Frederick area and work for AirPax Company of Frederick for 54 years, until her retirement in 2006.

Ms. Zimmerman is survived by her sisters, Helen V. Hargett and husband, Harold, and Faye McKay and husband, John; her nieces, Ruth Ann Ruffner and husband, Thomas, and Carol Lee Hargett; her nephews, Harold E. Hargett and wife, Betty, Erik L. McKay and wife Lynn, Casey J. McKay and wife Sara; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Arrangements and services are by the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, Frederick.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.

If desired, contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702-1799.
