Mr. Conrad Link

Conrad B. Link, Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at the University of Maryland, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at home in Gaithersburg.

Born March 5, 1912 in Western New York, he was the son of Conrad and Mae Barnett Link.

A graduate of Ohio State University, he was on the faculty of Penn State, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the University of Maryland. He was a 75-year member of the American Society of Horticulture Science and a charter member of University United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was survived by beloved wife of 59 years, Kathleen Barber Link; father of Helen Chang, Leora (Michael) Caporaletti and the Rev. Conrad O. (Catherine) Link. He was the brother of Dorothy (John) Fitch and the late Leonard (Emeline) Link. Also survived by nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life memorial service Friday, at The Guild Chapel, Asbury Methodist Village, 201 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with the service beginning at 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Foundation, University United Methodist Church, 3621 Campus Drive, College Park, MD 20740. Interment will be private.

Mr. Charles Hawk

Charles "Chuck" Preston Hawk, 76, of Henderson, Nev., passed away after a very brief and courageous battle with cancer Sept. 15, 2008, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nev.

Chuck was born in Rockford, Ohio and grew up in Troy, Ohio. He lived in Frederick and eventually moved to Las Vegas. Chuck was a hard worker his entire life, working as an insulator in both Local 24 in Maryland and Local 135 in Nevada. He was also a building superintendent in Nevada. Chuck also served in the United States Navy for four years. Additionally, Chuck was very active in AA for more than 23 years and was a great inspiration to all his sponsorees in the program.

Chuck will be greatly missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents, AJ and Fay Hawk as well as his brother, Paul Hawk. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Katz Hawk; sons, Casey (Kim Savage) Hawk of Spokane, Wash., and Mark (Lisa) Katz of Henderson, Nev.; daughters, Julie (Dr. Steven) Hymovitch of Phoenix, Teri (Pat) Gregg of Maryland, and Audrey Grisez of Maryland; brother, Lee (Bev) Hawk of Ohio; sisters, Anita (Dick) Clutter of Ohio and Joanne Miller of Ohio; and sister-in-law, Judy Hawk; grandchildren, Noah and Zachary Katz of Henderson, Nev., Stefanie, Hannah, Hallie, David and Evan Hymovitch of Phoenix, Delaney Gregg of Maryland, Jamie (Monica) Grisez of Maryland; Geoffrey (Wendy) Grisez of Maryland; Andy (Krystie) Grisez of Maryland and Ashley (Shane) Grisez of Maryland. He was also the proud great-grandfather of eight, all of Maryland. Chuck will also be missed by his former stepchildren, Alexis, Andrea and Justin.

There will be a private burial ceremony for family only Friday, Sept. 26. A celebration of Chuck's life will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, in Nevada. For location and time, contact the family.

Mrs. Lois Llewellyn

Lois "Tiney" (Simmons) Llewellyn, 56, of Brunswick, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008.

Born July 7, 1952, in Keyser, W.Va., she was a daughter of Freda Louise (Steward) Simmons and the late William Marvin Simmons. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Steward.

With the help of our Lord and Savior, Tiney fought and won a courageous battle with an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer. She was attacked by multiple rare blood infections and beat each one. She was attacked by a leaking bowel that developed into a disease that ate away at her spine, and the Lord delivered her from it. Through it all, she remained unmovable and steadfast in her faith and the Lord worked many miracles on and through her. She has been a testimony to all who have had the pleasure of knowing her. Tiney was a member of Gapland Christian Church in Knoxville, and a 1971 graduate of Keyser High School.

Surviving in addition to her mother, Freda Simmons of Keyser, W.Va.; are her husband of 35 years, David Llewellyn, of Brunswick; and her three sons, David William Llewellyn, Brian David Llewellyn, both of Frederick; and Christopher Brian Llewellyn of Brunswick. She is also survived by two sisters, Norma Lee Davy of Piedmont, W.Va., and Maureen Lupis of Short Gap, W.Va.; and four brothers, Roger William Simmons Sr. of Cumberland; Charles Lee Simmons of Stafford, Va.; Roger William Simmons Jr. and Gary Allen Simmons, both of Keyser.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at the Markwood Funeral Home, 111 S. Mineral St., Keyser, W.Va. Services will be conducted at at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Assembly, Newton Street, Keyser. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.

Interment will follow in the Duling cemetery, New Creek, W.Va.

Ms. Minnie Houck

Ms. Minnie Lee Houck, 81, formerly of Germantown, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 in Scottsburg, Ind.

Born on March 13, 1927, in Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late Manuel and Alpha (Johnson) Adkins.

She is survived by eight children, Geri Houck and husband, Charles; Veda Hemingway and husband, Gary; Joe Mathis and wife, Roxie; Albert Dreslein; August Dreslein; Tina Jacob and husband, John; Lisa Femenia and husband, Luis; Pearl Gerlich and husband, Henry; also surviving are 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, three sisters and two bothers. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

Family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 20, from 3:30 to 4 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, at which time the memorial service will held.

Mrs. Julia Whitmore

Julia C. Whitmore, 94, of Walkersville, passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Northapmton Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late John F. Whitmore.

Born June 19, 1914, in Walkersville, she was the daughter of the late George Ramsbug and Maude Cramer Ramsburg.

Julia was an active member throughout her life in the Glade United Church of Christ in Walkersville. She was a member of Walkersville Homemakers and she volunteered at the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company. She was well known for her knitting.

She is survived by a son, Ralph Whitmore and wife, Irene, of Walkersville; a daughter, Jean Elizabeth Whitmore of Walkersville; and two grandchildren, Betsy Brannen and John Whitmore. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Frantz.

Friends may call the from 4 to 9 p.m. where the family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Glade United Church of Christ, 21 Fulton Ave., Walkersville, with the Rev. Eugene P. Bartell officiating. Interment will be in Glade cemetery, Walkersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Glade United Church of Christ Building Fund, PO Box. 236, Walkersville, MD 21793, or to the charity of ones choice.

Mr. Ernest A. Priest

Ernest A. Priest, 75, of Rutland, Vt., formerly of Germantown, passed away on Sept. 10, 2008, at the Genesis Mountain View Center.

He was born in Mount Holly, Vt., Nov. 22, 1932, the son of Erwin and Edith (Witham) Priest.

After graduating from Rutland High School in 1950, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He was employed by IBM in Gaithersburg and retired in 1991. Mr. Priest enjoyed fishing, woodworking and gardening. He volunteered at the Montgomery County Fair, and was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Day and husband, Kenneth, of Emmitsburg; and Melanie Priest of Windsor Mill.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 14, at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland, Vt. He was buried at the Mechanicsville cemetery in Belmont, Vt. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post 36.

Mrs. Ernestine Jones

Ernestine Jones, 72, of Hagerstown, formerly of Beaufort, S.C., was the oldest child born to the late Rev. E.J. Shepard and the late Rosa McLeod on July 28, 1936. She was married to Mr. Cephas Adderley, who preceded her in death on May 3, 2002. She entered into the eternal rest of God on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the home of her daughter in Frederick.

Mother Jones, as many called her, was born in Seabrook, S.C. At the age of five, she went to live with her aunt, Rebekah Campbell, in Miami, Fla. She gave her life to the Lord at a young age and continued to service God whole heartedly until she transcended from this earthly life into her eternal life.

She leaves her legacy and memories to her children, Paulina (David) Harris of Frederick, and Paul (Linda) Adderley of Beaufort, S.C.; five grandchildren, Terrance (Alisha) Adderley of Beaufort, S.C.; Marina Harris of Frederick; Bertina (Jack) Weible of Charlestown, S.C.; David Paul Adderley; and Jordan Cephas Adderley of Beaufort, S.C.; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, George (Patricia) Habersham, and Herbet Lee Habersham, both of Hardeeville, S.C.; four sisters, Sarah Habersham of Miami, Fla.; Ida Habersham and Elizabeth Habersham, both of Beaufort, S.C.; and Mary Habersham of New York; a special niece, Daisy Joseph of Miami, Fla.; nieces and nephews in Nassau, Bahamas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and numerous friends.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at New Dimension Worship Center, 919 B E. St., Frederick, where services will begin at 3 p.m. with overseer Alexander J. Hardy officiating. Interment will be private.

Arrangements are by Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mrs. Pauline McClain

Pauline "Polly" W. McClain, 84, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at her home.

Born Thursday, Oct. 25, 1923, in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Edgar L. Warrenfeltz and the late Ilga M. Rice Warrenfeltz. Her husband, Walter E. McClain, preceded her in death in 1991.

Polly was a graduate of Middletown High School in 1940. She was employed as a sales clerk at Hopkins-Gruber Men's Clothing store in Hagerstown. She was a member at St. John's Lutheran Church where she served on the council and various committees. She volunteered at the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary. She belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, served on the Board of Directors for the Women's Club, was a member at the Legion Auxiliary and the Lady Elks Club. Polly also loved to travel.

She is survived by a sister, Anna M. Wilson, of Hagerstown; a brother, Paul Warrenfeltz, of Hagerstown; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; caregivers Lori Schmidt, Mary Harbaugh and Phyllis Layhue. She was preceded in death by one brother, Clay E. Warrenfeltz.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, from the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North Hagerstown, with the Pastor Edward Heim officiating. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Mount Zion United Methodist cemetery, Myersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740, or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Judge Robert Lucke Sr.

Robert Numsen Lucke Sr., a resident of Severna Park, died Sept 16, 2008, at The Peartree House, Pasadena, where he had resided for nine months. Previously, he resided at Charlestown Retirement Community, Catonsville, from 1998 to 2006. Judge Lucke was born in Washington, D.C., March 1, 1924, to George Albert and Jesse Numsen Lucke Sr. After living in Baltimore from 1928 to 1930, the family moved to their summer home in Round Bay, Severna Park, in 1939. He lived nearly his entire life in Anne Arundel County. He was married to Lois Klakring Lucke, of Annapolis, for 50 years, who died in 1998.

Upon graduating from Annapolis High School in 1943, Judge Lucke enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1943 and was seriously wounded in France -- earning a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1950; he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He worked in the Investigative Dept., U.S. IRS, from 1950 to 1953, after which he assumed the position of Agent-In-Charge of the Alcohol Beverage Enforcement Unit, Maryland Dept. of Treasury until 1962. Judge Lucke graduated from the University of Maryland Law School in 1959, where he was a member of the Delta Theta Phi law fraternity. He was a founding partner in the law firm of Smith & Lucke from 1962 to 1977, at which time he was appointed Judge, Maryland District Court. He retired from the court in 1991, but continued to sit part-time during retirement.

He was a founding member of St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park and served as a vestryman and as assistant superintendent of the church school, past president of the Severna Park Rotary Club, past YMCA board member and served in other volunteer organizations. He was a 57-year member of the Free Masons, Glen Burnie Lodge 213, and Boumi Temple, and was a co-founder of the Severna Park Old Timers Club.

Judge Lucke is survived by one sister, Ella Louise Greenhood of Silver Spring; two daughters, Jennifer Lucke Patton and husband, James, of Severna Park; and Suzanne Lucke Turner and husband, Richard, of Salisbury; and one son, Robert N. Lucke Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Walkersville; seven grandchildren, Cleveland Hyatt, Emily Hyatt, Suzanne Hyatt, Katy Turner, Molly Turner, Erin Lucke and Abbey Lucke.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, 495 Gov. Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 22, at St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church, 375 Benfield Road, Severna Park, with a memorial service at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to Severna Park Assistance Network (SPAN), 400 Benfield Road, Severna Park, MD 21146.

Mrs. Dorothy Murray

Dorothy Christiana Murray, 97, of Lime Kiln, died on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at the Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, in Frederick.

She was the loving wife of the late Austin Calvin Murray, they were married on Dec. 11, 1929, and he died on Nov. 4, 1997.

She was born in Doubs Sept. 4, 1911, the daughter of the late Murray E. and Nina Hickman Houck.

Mrs. Murray had worked for many years as the cafeteria manager for the Muse Tailoring Company, until 1952, and then was employed with the G. L. Baking Company, both in Frederick. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick, and a chartered and life member of the Carroll Manor Fire Company and the auxiliary to the fire company.

Surviving her is one sister, Helen H. Biehl, of Frederick; two brothers, Francis Houck, of Doubs, and Raymond Houck, of Jefferson; and five nieces, Barbara Biehl Baker and husband, Nelson, of N. Fort Myers, Fla., Glenda Biehl Green and husband, Brooke, of Winchester, Mass., Martha V. Houck, of Jefferson, Carol Houck, of Jefferson and Mary Louise Hughes and husband, Robert, of Frederick; and one nephew, Paul Francis Houck and wife Linda, of Keedysville.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. W. Philip Fogarty, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. The Carroll Manor Fire Company will conduct a memorial service 8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home .

Pallbearers will be: Nelson Baker, Brooke Green, L. Edward Johnson, Eddie Arnold and Glenn Young Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Carroll Manor Fire Company, P. O. Box 7, Adamstown, MD 21710.

Mr. William Spriggs

Mr. William (Billy) Edward Spriggs, 70, of East Mountain Road, Knoxville, died, Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008.

He was born Feb. 15, 1938, in Frederick County. He was the son of the late George Michael Spriggs and Mary Frances Spriggs.

He graduated from Lincoln High School class of 1956 in Frederick County. He was a member of St. Mary's and St. Francis Catholic Churches for many years. He was employed by the B & O Railroad in Brunswick and Washington D.C. and the Frederick Fencing Company. His passing was a result of various years of health issues.

He is survived by two step-children, Kevin and Michele of Virginia; two brothers, George M. Spriggs Jr., and wife, Nadine, of Laurel, Alfred F. Spriggs and wife, Georgia, Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Patricia A. Smothers, of Knoxville, Hannah E. Pearson and husband, Ernest of Jamestown, N.C.; and a dearly beloved niece and nephew, Patricia M. Henderson and husband, Van A. Henderson and daughter, Jessica, of Frederick, and Eric L. Smothers of Brunswick. He was loved by many nieces and nephews, family and close friends, Bill Mundy, Douglass Scott, Mary Sappington Naylor and Charlie Powers.

He had a great love for catering and playing music all day. His hobbies were raising his chickens, butchering, taking care of his yard growing beautiful flowers and caring for his beloved dog "Princess" and admiring and feeding the beautiful birds daily. The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Gregory Rausch and staff; Dr. K. C. Lee and staff, Dr. Bolarum; Dr. Paul Chomick, North Hampton Health Care Center staff, and all the medical staff that were related to Mr. William Spriggs' care.

Friends will be received at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. Memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. L. P. Teixeira. Interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be sent to St. Francis Catholic Church or St. Mary's Church, 115 First Ave., Brunswick, MD 21716.

Mr. Carl Weakley

Mr. Carl Weakley, 90, died Sept. 17, at his home in Frederick. He was the husband of M. Elinor Stevanus Weakley.

Born March 4, 1918, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Norman Charles and Hallie Mae Vanscoy Weakley.

Mr. Weakley attended Alleghany High School in Cumberland, and graduated in 1937. He was employed by the Celanese Corporation in Cumberland from 1937 to 1942. He volunteered for military service in May, 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force and served in the ninth Airdrome Squadron. Several years later, the squadron landed on Omaha beach on D-Day plus two and established the first air strip on the coast of France. Mr. Weakley was discharged in October of 1945 at the rank of staff sergeant. Following his discharge, he married Elinor Stevanus of Cumberland. The service was performed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Cumberland Nov. 11, 1945.

Mr. Weakley was employed by the C&P; Telephone company of Cumberland, in 1946. He held several positions with the company and in 1955 he was transferred to Frederick, as the commercial manager, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. Throughout his career with the telephone company, Mr. Weakley was highly active in community affairs. He was a member of the Frederick Rotary Club and served as its president from 1958 to 1959. He was also the executive director of the National Alliance of Business Men, a member of the Hood College Board of Associates from 1975 to 1987, the founding president of Monocacy Valley Goodwill Industries from 1970 to 1975 and in 1965 he was elected to the Frederick Memorial Hospital board of directors and served as the chairman from 1973 to 1981. Not wanting to give up on his service to the community, Mr. Weakley joined the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in 1991 and accumulated over 3000, hours of service.

In addition to his wife Elinor; he is survived by his daughter, Leslie Michele Jenks and her husband, John, of Albany, Oregon; son, Stephen Weakley and his wife, Patricia, of Walkersville; three grandchildren, Carlie Jenks, Morgan Stump and Sarah Weakley; and sister, Geraldine Statler. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Weakley and siste, r Mildred Freeman.

A private family service will be held.

Memorial contribution may be made in Mr. Weakley's name to the Frederick Memorial Hospital, 400 W. 7th Street, Frederick, MD 21701 or the Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
