February 7, 2001

Leroy Milton Royer of Easton died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Wednesday, February 7, 2001. He was 89.

Born in Cordova on June 13, 1911, he was the son of the late Samuel and Bessie Barto Royer. He graduated from Cordova High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 as a Technical Sergeant in the 179th Signal Repair Company.

As part owner of Royer & Barto and later as sole owner of Royer Electronics, both in Easton, he was a salesman and repairman for TV's and other electronics for over 50 years. He was responsible for bringing the first TV to Easton, which was in the Oak Hill Diner. Mr. Royer retired when he was 80.

In addition to his wife of 51 years, the former Louisa Hall, he is survived by two sons, James S. Royer of Syracuse, NY and Stephen H. Royer of HERNANDO, FL; a daughter, Betsy R. Swanson of Whitefish, Montana; and 7 grandchildren, Martin Royer, Daniel Royer, Nina Walker, Ted Walker, Erick Swanson, Bryan Royer, and Christina Royer. A brother, Charles Royer, is deceased.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Saturday, February 10, 2001 at 1:00 PM. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

February 8, 2001

Betty Watt Connors passed away at her home on February 8, 2001.

Born on August 7, 1926 in El Paso, TX. She was the daughter of Ray and Ann Watt. Betty grew up in El Paso and Scranton, PA. She attended schools in both areas: Marywood and Texas Western College. In 1943 she married Air Force pilot Arthur F. (Bud) Connors. Betty enjoyed air Force life with her family in Japan, Texas, Puerto Rico, North Carolina and Maryland. She was an enthusiastic volunteer in a variety of organizations over the years as well as avid bridge player, attaining Life Master in the ACBL. Upon Bud's retirement, the Connors made Chestertown their home.

For the past ten years, Betty thoroughly enjoyed her role as Manager of the Nearly New Shop (the charitable thrift store benefiting the local hospital), where she made many dear friends. Under her leadership, the shop's revenues increased significantly. Betty frequently remarked "I love my home;" so we, her family are very grateful to the Kent Hospice Foundation for helping to make it possible for her to remain home.

Beloved mother of Patricia Connors of San Antonio, TX; Kathleen Connors of Atlanta, GA and Stephanie McPherson and her husband Scott of Destrehan, LA. Cherished Gram of Barbara and Robert Snell; and Anna Connors, all of New York City.

Memorial Contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 4141 North Henderson Plaza, Suite 3, Arlington, VA 22203; or to the Kent Hospice Foundation, 103 Dixon Drive, Chestertown, MD 21620

Graveside services will be at Arlington National cemetery on Tuesday, February 20th, at 11:00 a.m.; the family will receive friends at home from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. that afternoon.

February 6, 2001

Phyllis Frances Clark of Easton died on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at the William Hill Manor in Easton. She was 91.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on August 22, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Marjorie MacGachen Allan. As a young girl living in Winnipeg, she graduated from the Ruperts Land Ladies College. In 1929, she married Dr. William H. Clark and they eventually made their home in South Bend, Indiana in 1933. She became a member of the Cathedral of St. James in South Bend, a member of the Junior League of South Bend, a founding member of Planned Parenthood of South Bend, and a founding member of the Coffee Corner of the Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Dr. Clark died in 1985. In 1997, she moved to Easton where she has been a resident of William Hill Manor.

Mrs. Clark is survived by a son, William M. Clark of Ft. Worth, TX; a daughter, Catherine C. North of Baltimore, MD; two brothers, Beresford Allan of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and Peter Webb of Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada; 9 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Martha C. Olt, is deceased.

Memorial services will be held at the William Hill Manor Auditorium in Easton on Saturday, February 10, 2001 at 2:00 PM. Services to be officiated by Rev. Nathan T. Southworth. Entombment will be private at the Riverview cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.

Memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood of South Bend or a favorite charity.

James R. Jennings of Centreville, Maryland died at his home on Tuesday, February 6, 2001. He was 88.

Born in Lynchburg, VA on June 14, 1912, he was the son of the late Clarence and Josie Bolton Jennings. He is survived by a daughter, Sherron A. Patterson of Severn, MD; two sons, James R. Jennings, Jr. of Centreville and David A. Jennings of Colorado Springs, CO; five grandchildren, Victoria L. Spiegel, Courtnei L. LaRue, Yvonne M. Jennings, David R. Jennings and Kelli A. Patterson and six great-grandchildren, Alexander, Connor, McKenzie, Taylor and Tyler Spiegel and David Jennings. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Catherine S. Jennings, his son, Paul C. Jennings and a granddaughter, Tara L. Jennings.

A graveside service will be held in Monticello Memory Gardens, Charlottesville, VA on Friday, February 9, 2001 at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 605 Windmill Road, Easton, MD 21601 or the American Lung Association of Maryland, 1840 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093.

Cora Elizabeth "Granny" Pyles of Centreville, MD, died on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Inc., Chestertown, MD. She was 88 years old.

Born in Ellenboro, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Franklin and Pleasy Garrison Wigner. She married Elver Benson Pyles on July 26, 1929; they made their home in Ellenboro, WV until 1943, when they moved to Maryland. She worked for a couple of years driving a taxicab in Washington D.C. She moved to Chestertown in 1968, then in 1973 they moved to Centreville, MD. In 1990 her husband predeceased her.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Chestertown, MD, where she was very active in both the church and the ministry since 1935. She enjoyed sewing, listening to bible tape recordings. Mrs. Pyles cared for numerous children over many years becoming known as "Granny Pyles."

Mrs. Pyles is survived by 3 sons; Gary Pyles of Centreville, MD, Joe Pyles of Titusville, FL, Jay Pyles of Locust Grove, VA, 1 daughter; Loretta Kidwell of Centreville, MD, 13 grandchildren; Joe Jr., Mike, Patty, Lindy, Robin, Brooke, Jeffrey, Tommy, Cheryl, Donald, Debra, Pamela, Lori. 40 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren also survive her. One Sister Betty Lee Locke of St. Mary's, VA. In addition to her husband she is preceded in death by 11 siblings and one grandson, Jamie.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 10th, at Kingdom Hall, Chestertown, MD at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Fort Lincoln cemetery, Brentwood, Maryland.

Isadore Silverman of Stevensville, MD. died Tuesday February 6, 2001 at his home. He was 87.

Born on September 27th, 1913 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of the late Louis & Minnie Silverman. He was a graduate from Central High School in Philadelphia where he was an all city soccer player. He enlisted in the Army and served during WWII in Germany & France.

On November 29th, 1942 he married Molly Kitter. Returning home to Philadelphia Mr. Silverman worked for the International Ladies Garment Works Union. His wife predeceased him in 1960.

In 1962 he married Olga Gulkowitz and later retired in 1978. In 1996 his wife predeceased him and he later moved to Stevensville to live with his daughter. Mr. Silver enjoyed bingo and bowling and was a member of the Jules E. Mastbaum Lodge # 389 and was an auxiliary policeman for the Philadelphia Police Force.

He is survived by his daughter Adrienne Fuss, two sisters Charlotte Bowman & Reba Clark, two grandchildren John & Michael Fuss and three great grandchildren Jordan, Tyler and Christopher.

Graveside services will be held 1PM Thursday February 8, 2001 at Mt. Sharon cemetery in Springfield, PA.

Ruby E. Thomas of Grasonville died on February 6, 2001 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville. She was 93.

Born in Grasonville on August 4, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Lemuel and Mary Smith Gardner. On May 3, 1924, she married William H. Thomas of Grasonville. He predeceased her on January 4, 1983. Mrs. Thomas worked for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union Local #585 at Perfect Garment in Grasonville.

She was a charter member of the Church of God, Grasonville. Mrs. Thomas will always be remembered for her rolls that would sell first at local bake sales, and as a fine seamstress who loved helping people.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by three sons; John R. Thomas of Grasonville, Charles L. Thomas of Long Island, NY, and Edward Y. Thomas of Chester; one daughter, Bette Adams of Centreville, one sister, Mary Lou Ewing, of Grasonville; twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. A son, William C. Thomas died in 1984, and a daughter, Mary Louise Thomas died at the age of 1.

Services will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, February 9, 2001 at the Church of God, Grasonville. Family and friends may call at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chester, on Thursday, February 8, 2001 from 2 pm till 4 pm and from 7 pm till 9 pm. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Avenue Queenstown, MD 21658.
