Mr. William Crone

William E. Crone, of Frederick, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at the Vindobona Nursing Home, Braddock Heights. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Jean P. (Oland) Crone.

Born on Nov. 5, 1930, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Charles Crone and Blanche (Shull) Crone Tracey.

Mr. Crone attended Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served in the Korean War. Bill was employed as a lineman with Potomac Edison Company, retiring after 391Ú2 years of service. He was an accomplished baseball player and was recruited for spring training with the Baltimore Orioles. He also played for Ijamsville and the Old Timers of Frederick. Mr. Crone was an experienced sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, golf and the outdoors in general. He loved animals especially his "Girls"(dogs).

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Bethany Vandervoort of N.J., and Patricia Goetz and husband, Terry, of Frederick; two sons, C. Bruce Crone of Calif., and William E. Crone II of Reisterstown; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Cross, Richard W. Harris, Terry E. Goetz Jr., Sandra Goetz, Oliver S. Goetz, Katie C. Goetz, Eric Crone and Amanda Crone; and 13 great-grandchildren. Bill will also be missed by his many friends and coworkers of Potomac Edison and his Roy Rogers "Breakfast Club." He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Crone.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opos-sumtown Pike, Frederick. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, held at the funeral home with the Rev. Dave Oravec officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Memorial contributions may be made to Frederick County Humane Society, 217 W. Patrick St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Allen Magaha

Allen David Magaha, 58, of 410 Key Circle, Hagerstown, passed away, Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Sunday, Sept. 3, 1950, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Charles Morgan Magaha of Hagerstown, and the late Caroline Virginia Morgan Magaha.

He was a 1968 graduate of Smithsburg High School and later attended Hagerstown Junior College and also went onto receive a certificate from Perdue University. He was employed in the pest control business for 38 years and self employed for many of those years as owner of Valley Pest Control, Key Home Inspections and Pest Zero. Allen was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Pest Control Assn. of Maryland and the former Hagerstown Moose Lodge. He will be greatly missed, especially by his granddaughters who he loved and was so devoted to. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 38 years, Teresa Ann (Fishack) Magaha; one daughter, Sharie S. Buffington of Hagerstown; and son, Shawn Allen Magaha of Clear Spring; four granddaughters, Allyson Buffington of Hagerstown, Morgan Magaha of Clear Spring, Gracie Magaha of Clear Spring, and Olivia Buffington of Hagerstown; two aunts and one great-aunt.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, from St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Edward Heim and the Rev. Shawn Bushman officiating. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown. Interment will be in the Boonsboro cemetery, Boonsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Academy Race for Education, 13321 Cearfoss Pike, Hagerstown, MD 21740, or the Clear Spring Elementary PTA, 12627 Broadfording Road, Clear Spring, MD 21722.

Miss Virginia Brown

Virginia Donlean Brown, 83, of 1045 Beechwood Drive, Hagerstown, passed away, Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Saturday, Nov. 1, 1924, in Thurmont, she was the daughter of the late Paul Harbaugh Brown and the late Belva Ruth Finneyfrock Brown.

She graduated from Thurmont High School and Hagerstown Business College. She was employed with Fairchild Aircraft & Rohr Industries, retiring in 1992 after 50 years of service.

She is survived by her sister, Beatrice Hess, of Westminster; and brother, Donald L. Brown, of Hagerstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters Kathryn Lewis, Dorothy Baker and Evelyn Houff, and brothers Leon Brown and Reuben Brown.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Wayne Frum officiating. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29. Interment will be in the Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church 19731 Shiloh Church Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742 or the Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Mr. Lester Jackson Jr.

Mr. Lester Robert Jackson Jr., former member of the personal staff of the late Walt Disney and one-time head of public relations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital of leukemia. He was age 77.

Mr. Jackson joined Disney in the early 1960s and handled media coverage of the four Disney shows at the New York World's Fair from 1964 to 1965, moving on to be in charge of the initial announcement of plans for Walt Disney World in November 1965. He was also responsible for publicity and special events at Disneyland until the mid 1970s.

Joining the Department of Commerce under the Nixon administration, he served as international media coordinator for the United States Travel Service, the government's national tourism promotion agency for this country. He traveled extensively through the world during his USTS tenure. At the request of the late Roger Stevens, chairman and CEO of the Kennedy Center, Mr. Jackson became the director of public relations and advertising for the national cultural facility, where he remained for several years before accepting the position of publicity director for General Mills Inc., in Minneapolis, Minn.

Concurrently, Mr. Jackson was prominent on the speaker's circuit, presenting more than 700 speeches, seminars, workshops, panels and academic discussion groups throughout the nation. His topics were primarily on the creativity process and application and on organization and operation of major events. With Steven Woods Schmader, he co-authored "Special Events: Inside And Out, " the industry's first full compilation of the creation and operation of major events. Later, he was the sole author of "Making Special Events Fit In The 21st Century, " an expansion of the Schmader-Jackson book. Following his retirement to Frederick, he was elected to the Hall of Fame of the International Festivals and Events Association in 2003.

In addition to Marie, his wife of 55 years, he is survived by two sons, Lester R. Jackson III and wife, Sheri, of Ryland Heights, Ky.; and Gregry Thomas Jackson of Huntington Beach, Ca.; a daughter, Shawna M. Capotosto and husband, John, of Frederick; eight grandchildren, Travis, Brandon, Ryan, Trevor, Kurtis, Rachael, Lindsey and Colin; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Ronald Jackson and wife, Katie, of Deer Park, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Marilynn Jackson, of Brownwood, Texas. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Jackson.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, with the Rev. Richard J. Murphy as Celebrant.

Interment will take place in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. James Svehla

James R. Svehla died Sept. 28, 2008.

He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Svehla (nee McNair); dear brother-in-law of Marie Svehla, Clara Svehla and Anne Svehla; loving uncle of John J. Svehla, Patrick J. Svehla, Christopher J. Svehla, Janet Svehla, Christine Regner, Jane Weidaw, Jody Svehla, Michael Svehla, Steven Svehla, James Svehla, Albert Svehla, Joseph Svehla and Elizabeth Spencer. Also survived by the following members of his wife Patricia's family (all of the Frederick area), brother-in-law, Donald Smith and his wife Polly; niece, Donna Kolb and her children Jamie, Andrew, Bradley and Dustin Kolb and Mellisa Bassler and her children Madison and Rylee; niece, Anita Koontz and her husband Tom and their children Alixa and Riggin Koontz; nephew, Dennis Kolb and his wife Robin and their children Stacy White and her daughter Michelle, Shana Lasley, Aimee Liller and Dennis Alan Kolb.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 York Road. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Gardens of Faith.

Mr. Kenneth Stoner

Kenneth H. Stoner, 71, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at his home.

He was born Oct. 13, 1936 in Elizabethtown, Pa. and was the son of the late Harry E. and Virginia M. Colvin Stoner.

Mr. Stoner was a 1954 graduate of Elizabethtown High School and was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Myersville. He retired from High Steel Structures, Inc., Lancaster, Pa.

He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1958.

Surviving is his wife, Deb Rowe Stoner; four daughters, Joy Fisher and her husband Scott, Wellsville, Pa.; Jenifer Burrell and husband Dave, Harrisburg, Pa.; Ivy Rose Stoner and Brett Winders, Smithsburg and Tealah Mae Stoner and Robert LaGrave Jr. of Hagerstown; three grandchidren, Waylon Fisher, Kendra Winders and Destany Winders; one great-granddaughter, Ariyanna Fisher; two sisters, Kay Ulrich and husband Jay of Marietta, Pa. and Virginia Edwards and husband Abe of Girard, Pa.; and one brother, Roy Stoner of Elizabethtown, Pa. He will be sadly missed by his many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Myersville, the Rev. Mary K. Worrel will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Maryland, 1107 Kenilworth Drive, Towson, MD 21285.

Arrangements are by Ricketts Funeral Home, Myersville.

Mr. Roy Teller

Mr. Roy Austin Teller, 86, of Frederick and formerly of Arlington, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at the Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Walkersville. He was the loving husband of Jacqueline Scruggs Teller.

He was born in Austin, Texas, Feb. 2, 1922, he was a son of the late Franklin and Bertha Teller.

Mr. Teller proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He was retired as a commercial artist and art director for the U.S. News and World Report magazine, publishing divisions. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Fairfax, Va., the Fort Myers Officers Club and was a member and officer of the Washington Art Directors Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Carole Grissom and husband, Dr. James S. Grissom, of Frederick and Claudia Teller of New York; one sister, Beatrice Kessler of Uvalde, Texas; granddaughter, Kristine Grissom of Frederick, and great-granddaughter, Kayla Grissom; and several nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his care giver, June Snowden.

Mr. Teller was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Katharine Grissom and a brother, Howard Teller.

Private funeral services and interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Online condolences may be shared with the family at KeeneyBasford.com.

Mrs. Ruth Smith

Ruth Eleanor Smith, 95, of Adamstown, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Raymond E. Smith Sr.

Born May 5, 1913, in Adamstown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Edith Thomas.

She was a member of Adamstown Community Church formerly known as Evangelical Reformed Church.

She retired as a secretary from the Frederick County Board of Education where she worked at Carroll Manor Elementary School.

She enjoyed crafts, crocheting and decorating for the holidays.

She is survived by her four daughters, Betty Charron of Frederick, Patricia Clark of Florida, Carole Warner and husband, Dale, of Frederick and Peggy Shaver and husband, Daniel, of Adamstown; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Smith; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She will also be remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by a son, Raymond E. Smith Jr.; a grandson, Timothy Clark; a sister, Helen Shook; and a brother, Joseph Thomas.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the funeral home, with Rev. Maxson officiating.

Interment will be held at Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Green

Mrs. Margaret Pauline Green, 92, of Frederick, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Thomas Patrick Green who passed away in 1982. Margaret was born in Feagaville, March 28, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Vernie (Stockman) Young.

Margaret was a lifelong member of the Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Feagaville, involved in the Ladies Aid Society. She was a quiet person who was a wonderful mother to her daughter and son.

Margaret was the mother of Dot Harris and husband, Casper, of Old Bridge, N.J. and Patrick Green and wife, Mary, of Frederick. She was the grandmother of Joe Cascio, Patty Gee, and Sandy Turner. She was the great-grandmother of 11 and the great-great-grandmother of five. Additionally, she is survived many, many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by her grandson, Tom Cascio.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. The Rev. Kenneth E. Gill Jr., of the Mount Zion Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Green's name to the Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 5709 Mount Philip Road, Frederick, MD 21703 or to Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 56 W. Frederick St., Walkersville, MD 21793.

Mrs. Helen Burdette

Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Burdette, 87, of Frederick, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at the Northampton Manor Health Care. She was the wife of the late Grayson C. Burdette.

Born in Frederick, on Oct. 23, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Charles E. and F. Idella Gearinger Kline.

Mrs. Burdette was a homemaker for most of her life and a longtime member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick.

Surviving is one sister, Betty L. Grove of Frederick; two brothers, Charles E. Kline Jr. and Donald E. Kline and wife, Martha, all of Frederick; also surviving are many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Terry L. Kline Sr. and wife Patsy, of Frederick; and great-nephew, Terry L. Kline Jr. and wife, Doreena; and great-great-niece, Brittany Leeann Kline, all of Frederick. She will also be remembered by a special friend, Beatrice Cole of Frederick.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Miller and Catherine Snyder.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. David G. Oravec, pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Pallbearers will be: Terry L. Kline Jr., Donald Kline, Randy Kline Rusty Main, Steven Main and David Grove Jr.

Mr. Adrian Leatherman

Adrian B. Leatherman, 92, of Round Rock, Texas, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at his home in Round Rock following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Louise Sinclair.

Born Oct. 14, 1915, in Myersville, he was the son of the late Roy Lester and Vada Elizabeth Grossnickle Leatherman.

Mr. Leatherman was a graduate of Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Va., and held a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Siboney in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a retired chemist with the Food and Drug Administration in Washington, D.C.

Prior to moving to Texas in 2003, Mr. Leatherman had been a resident of Washington, N.C. for 25 years. Before moving to North Carolina, he had lived in Frederick and Rockville. The things Adrian most enjoyed in life were playing bridge, going to the beach cottage at Port Aransas, Texas, fishing, playing golf -- he even had a "hole-in-one" -- and especially his family.

Surviving are two daughters, Adrienne Bee Flagg and husband, Richard, of Round Rock, Texas, and Carolyn Bradley Richardson and husband, Judd, of Hendersonville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Todd Lee Flagg and wife, Misti, of Greenbrier, Ariz., Anthony Marc Flagg and wife, Diana, of Austin, Texas, and Lori Richardson DeGeus and husband, Tim, of Raleigh, N.C.; four great-grandsons, Connor and Paxton Flagg of Greenbrier, Ariz., and Nathan and Ryan Flagg of Austin, Texas; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley DeGeus of Raleigh, N.C. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Eugene Leatherman.

Adrian will be buried next to his beloved wife, Dorothy, on Oct. 8, which is the 68th anniversary of their marriage. Friends are invited to join the family between 10 and 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Francis Scott Key Chapel in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Frederick and then will proceed to the graveside where services and inurnment will begin at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, 4029 Capital of Texas Highway, Austin TX 78704 or to the charitable organization of your choice.
