Ms. Mary Burrier

Mary "Adelene" Burrier, 83, of Mount Airy, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at Citizen's Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Mount Airy, as the daughter of the late Emerson E. Burrier and the late Edith Gertrude (Garver) Burrier.

She was a music teacher in Frederick for Sperry Storm and gave private lessons at her home. She has a degree in music and piano from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Ms. Burrier was a member and deacon of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren in Mount Airy, where she played organ for 26 years.

She is the last living member of her immediate family and is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771, with the Rev. L. Ross Kirk and Pastor Wayne Hall officiating.

A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, MD 21784.

Entombment will be in Clustered Spires cemetery, formerly Linden Hills Memorial, Frederick.

Those desiring may make contributions to Locust Grove Church of the Brethren or the Arthritis Foundation Maryland Chapter 1777, Reisterstown Road, Suite 150, Baltimore, MD 21208.

Mr. Edward Leonarczyk

Edward Adam "Big Ed" Leonarczyk, 61, of Citrus Hills, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at his residence under the loving care of his family and the Hospice of Citrus County.

Mr. Leonarczyk was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Oct. 6, 1946, to the late Edward and Eleanor Leonarczyk and moved to Florida in 2002 from Frederick.

He was a retired heavy equipment salesman for Valley Equipment and Supply. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Beverly Hills, Inverness Elks Lodge #2522 and Inverness Moose Lodge #2112.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Betty L. Leonarczyk; two daughters, Jennifer Queen of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Kelly Zerphy of Hagerstown; three step-sons, Shawn, Scott and Wes McIntosh, all of Frederick; one brother, Paul of Manchester, N.H.; and six grandchildren.

A celebration of life memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the family's home. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations.

Private cremation arrangements are under the care of the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness.

Mr. Carroll Smith

Carroll W. “Smitty” Smith, 92, of Myersville, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at Vindobona Nursing Home, Braddock Heights.

He was born Dec. 28, 1915 in Dayton, Ohio and was the son of the late Carroll W. Sr. and Myrtle Shelton Smith.

Smitty was a member of Manor Lutheran Church, Church Hill, Adamstown; a life member of Myersville Vol. Fire Co. where he had served as chief and was a past member of the Board of Directors. He was past president of Frederick Co. Vol. Fire and Rescue Association.

He was employed by James Shaff Sawmill and Custom Work and retired from H. B. Duvall after 37 years as a mechanic.

Surviving is his wife, Irene E. Frushour Smith; one son, Nelson C. Smith and wife Joan of Brunswick; one granddaughter, Brandy Greenawalt and husband Jason of Charlestown, W.Va.; and one grandson, Scott Smith of Brunswick; one foster brother, Arthur Cook and his wife Nellie of Adamstown; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Smith Leatherman; his foster parents, John and Nora Cook; and two foster brothers, Melvin Cook and Richard Cook.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren. Pastors Donna and Tim Ritchey Martin will officiate.

Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville.

Mr. Dennis Goetz

Dennis M. “Denny” Goetz, 53, of Fairfield, Mont., a heavy equipment operator, died of cancer Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at his residence.

Denny was surrounded by his loving friends and family at his death. He was born May 27, 1955, in Frederick, and attended Linganore High School. As a young boy, he worked for many years on local farms.

He and his loving wife, Debbie, were married March 9, 2002, and spent a total of 20 wonderful years enjoying their life together.

He spent 10 years with Lehigh Cement in Union Bridge, and has been a heavy equipment operator for the last 23 years. He was currently employed with Dave Dickman Excavating in Great Falls, Mont.

Denny loved NASCAR races, farm auctions, his donkeys (Poker Jack, Biscuit and Bandit), old Chevy trucks, tinkering in his workshop, traveling on cruises with friends, but most of all, time spent on his Farmall tractor.

He loved working and spending time with his family and was looking forward to his first grandchild. He was a wonderful and very supportive Dad, but most of all a best friend. Denny was always the life of every gathering and brought laughter to every occasion. He cherished the many friendships he had forged from state to state. He was best-known to all for his great work ethic and unique sense of humor.

Our hearts are broken. There will never be another person like Denny that can fill the void in our hearts. He will be greatly missed by everyone he loved and touched throughout his life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Goetz and two stepdaughters, Misty Myers, Parkville, and Dana Gernand, Harris, Minn.; his extended children, Katryna Cieslicki, Jesse Nickos, and Katie Wilson; his mother, Dorothy Tyeryar; his three sisters, Sandy (Martin) Hargett, Lori (Tony) Rippeon, and Crystal Tyeryar; his brother, Terry (Pat) Goetz, all of Frederick, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Laura Boone, who helped raise him.

His memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Solid Rock Bible Church in Great Falls, Mont. There will also be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Oppossumtown Pike in Frederick. Schnider Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

Memorials in Denny’s name are suggested to Sletten Cancer Center, 1117 29th St. S., Great Falls, MT 59405.

Mr. Robert Sharer Sr.

Mr. Robert E. "Bob" Sharer Sr., 69, of Thurmont, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Ann Harbaugh Sharer.

Born Oct. 31, 1938, in Thurmont, a son of the late Harry Lee and Marie Elizabeth Krietz Sharer.

Mr. Sharer was a former farmer and his latest occupation was as a maintenance engineer with Hood College. He was a member of the F.F.A. and the Grange. He enjoyed raising cattle and mowing the lawn on his tractor. Mr. Sharer got most of his enjoyment in life by spending time with his family and many friends.

Surviving besides his wife at home are two children, Robert E. "Bobby" Sharer Jr. and wife, Candy, of Fairfield, Pa., and Rebecca Elizabeth Sharer-Long and husband, Raymond "Chip", of Thurmont; three grandchildren, Crystal Wiles and husband, Adam, of Fairfield, Pa., Carrie Long and Logan Long of Thurmont; two great-grandchildren, Camron Wiles and Alyssa Wiles both of Fairfield, Pa. Three sisters, Ann Fraley and husband, Joe, and Joyce Sharer, all of Thurmont, and Lottie Trigg and husband, Wayne, of Frederick; a brother, Harry L. Sharer Jr. of Sabillasville, numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Special friends include Roscoe and Mary Ann Harbaugh, Larry Stull, Donnie Keilholtz, and Leroy Hoovermale, and his many friends at the Kountry Kitchen in Thurmont.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Linda Sharer.

Mr. Sharer is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 East Main St., Thurmont, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oc. 7 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Barry Taylor, Deerfield United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment to follow in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

The family wishes that memorials may be made in Mr. Sharer's name to the Deerfield United Methodist Church, 16405 Foxville-Deerfield Road, Sabillasville, MD 21780.

Mrs. Doris Grossnickle

Doris Eileen Wiles Grossnickle, 89, of Middletown, died Thurday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Ralph U. Grossnickle, who died Jan. 14, 1988.

Born in Myersville, Aug. 29, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Russell Peter Sr. and Letha Alice Grossnickel Wiles.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren, first a member of the Grossnicle church and later the Frederick church, who was absorbed in restoration of original theological beliefs, doctrine and thought. She loved farming, painting, sewing, cooking and all aspects of domestic and agricultural related activities. She was an active participant in Middletown and Walkersville community interests and was well known in the Frederick city area for her interests in historical restoration.

She was dedicated to her family and acted as a surrogate parent to her siblings and friends.

She is survived by one son, Monroe F. Grossnickle and wife, Ruta M., of Walkersville and Australia; two grandchildren, Ona Nicola Amber Grossnickle and Elliott Zyle Grossnickle, both of Australia; and brothers and sisters, Pauline A. Grossnickle of Walkersville; Russell P. Wiles Jr. of Wirtz, Va.; Marie F. Harshman of Frederick; Janice M. Hawkins of Braddock; Regean P. Fogle of Cearfoss; Yvonne F. Georg of Brunswick; Thomas M. Wiles of Middletown and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Austin C. J. Wiles.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday Oct. 6, at the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the church service on Monday. The Rev. Dr. James S. Flora, a retired Church of the Brethren minister, the Rev. Tim Ritchey Martin, pastor of Grossnickle Church, and the Rev. Mike Watson of the Frederick Church of the Brethren, will officiate. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren cemetery Fund, Marion Leatherman, 3526 Bittle Road, Myersville, MD 21773.

Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Katherine Nicolet

Katherine L. Nicolet, 66, of Annandale, Va., died on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at the home of her daughter in Emmitsburg, following an extended illness.

Born Oct. 29, 1941, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Louis C. and Marvis L. (Manuel) Walters. She is survived by a stepmother, Polly Torpy of Florida.

She loved design and to garden. She loved her family and friends, but most of all loved the Lord.

Surviving are children Kimberley Nicolet of Emmitsburg; Christopher and wife, Karen Nicolet, of Amissville, Va.; and Darryl Nicolet of Gaithersburg; siblings, Robert, Dennis and Phillip Walters of Maryland, Richard Walters of Virginia, Sherry Dermer and Tracy Allen of Texas, Carolyn Krym of Florida; and stepgranddaughter Natalie Ruybal.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in The Smith Center of McLean Bible Church, in Vienna, Va., with Pastor Edward W. Few and Pastor Richard C. Parke co-officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, Md. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to McLean Bible Church, c/o: Benevolence Fund, 8925 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA 22182.

Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Emmitsburg, Maryland, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Aida Vail

Aida Elizabeth Vail, 93, passed away Oct. 2, at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. She was the wife of the late Earle L. Vail, her husband for 69 years.

From 1951 to 1996, she and Earle resided on the family farm near Boyds prior to moving to Asbury Methodist Village. In addition to raising four children and serving as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, Mrs. Vail was employed as a sales associate for many years with the Hecht Company and Garfinckel's department stores. She was also a Licensed Practical Nurse. Among her patients was the renowned author Upton Sinclair. After her retirement, she was a volunteer at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, contributing over 8, 000 hours of service, twice being named Volunteer of the Year.

Surviving are children Vernon Vail of Marion, S.C.; Keith Vail of Boyds; Roger Vail of Columbia; and Janet Vail of Washington, D.C.; and brothers, William Barnhart of Piqua, Ohio; and George R. Barnhart, of Fresno, Calif. Grandchildren are Steven Kelly of Glendale, Ariz.; Janet Kelly Goins of Columbia, S.C.; Vallery Vail of Mount Airy; Sandra Vail of Frederick; and Tracy Pauter of Frederick; stepgrandchildren are Bruce Breen of San Antonio, Texas; Laurie Breen of Silver Spring; and Julie Breen of Hagerstown. There are six great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mrs. Vail was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Olney.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday Oct. 4, at Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Boyds Presbyterian Church, Boyds. Officiating will be the Rev. Merritt Ednie and the Rev. Dr. Pat Carlson. Interment will follow in the Boyds Presbyterian cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, P.O. Box 280, Olney, MD 20830-0280 or the Boyds Presbyterian Church, 19901 White Ground Road, Boyds, MD 20841.

Mrs. Mabel Thompson

Mabel Catherine Thompson, 97, of New Windsor, passed peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, Pa.

Born Oct. 6, 1910, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest C. and Mamie Runkles Mullinix. She was the wife of T. Arthur Thompson Sr., who predeceased her on July 2, 1982, after 54 years of marriage.

Mrs. Thompson was a 1928 graduate of Mount Airy High School. She was a member of Linganore United Methodist Church, Unionville, for more than 55 years where she was an active member of the Women's Society. She was also a member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau and a homemaker's club. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson were prominent dairy farmers on Singing Springs farm on Clear Ridge Road near New Windsor for 43 years until retiring in 1971.

In 1985, Mrs. Thompson, moved to Middlebrook Apartments in Westminster, where she enjoyed baking for residents in her building. In 2003, she entered Assisted Living at Homewood at Plum Creek, Hanover. She enjoyed baking, cooking, canning, gardening and spending time with her family. She volunteered annually for the New Windsor Fire Dept., baking pies and helping to make crab cakes for the carnival and patting oysters for their public suppers. Surviving are four children, Doris Troxell and husband, William "Bill" Sr., of Westminster, Truman "Sonny" Thompson and wife, Thelma Lee, of New Windsor, Janet Arbaugh and husband, Randy, of Hampstead, and Jo Ann Myers and husband, Tim, of Fairfield, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Deborah Rosebrock of New Windsor, Michael Thompson of Hanover, William "Biff" Troxell Jr. of Westminster, Melissa Reed of Hanover, Jennifer Singer of Westminster, Joshua Myers of Fairfield, and Brad Arbaugh of Kailua, Hawaii; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Edna Brandenburg of Middletown, and Mattie Haines of Mount Airy; two brothers, Ralph Mullinix of Frederick, and Ray Mullinix of Walkersville.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 at Hartz-ler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with the Rev. David Coakley, church pastor, and the Rev. Michael Leftwich, former pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Prospect cemetery, near Mount Airy. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.

Bearers will be Michael Thompson, William Troxell Jr., Joshua Myers, Roy Singer, Joseph Rosebrock and Russell Reed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Linganore United Methodist Church, 8921 Clemsonville Road, Union Bridge, MD 21791.
