Mrs. Esther Barthlow

Mrs. Esther A. Phelps Barthlow, 87, of Frederick, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Citizens Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 13, 1921, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Clara G. and John L. Pittinger.

Twice married , she was the wife of the late Charles A. Phelps and the late Millard E. Barthlow.

Esther was a homemaker for most of her life. She worked for Price Electric and also the Frederick County Department of Social Services where she provided home health care to the elderly until her retirement in 1981. She also cared for many children in her home as a day care provider.

She loved beautiful flowers and gardening. She spent many nights canning fresh fruits and vegetables for her family for the winter months. She also loved to read and recite poetry.

She is survived by her seven children, Nancy L. Bell and husband, Harry, of Rohresville; John C. Phelps and wife, Linda, of Pensacola, Fla.; Anna S. Etchison and husband, Lee, of Frederick; Trudy Printz and husband, Ernest, of Frederick; Regina Graber and husband, Mark, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; Charles W. Phelps and wife, Linda, of Brunswick; and Kenneth A. Phelps of Frederick. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles L. Bell.

Esther also leaves behind very dear and lifelong friends, Katherine Lake and Ruby Neel of Frederick and Jim and Regina Raun of Barra Do Pirai, Brazil.

She will be sadly missed by those who loved her.

She was a member of New Market United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Raymond Moreland officiating.

Interment will be in St. Paul's cemetery, Point of Rocks.

Mrs. Kathleen Snowden

Mrs. Kathleen Irene Snowden, of New Market, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at her home. Born in Mount Airy on Aug. 1, 1933, she was the wife of the late William Kenneth Snowden and daughter of the late Grafton Ignatius and Goldie Irene Dorsey.

Mrs. Snowden was a member of Simpson Christian Community Church, New Market. She retired from the National Institutes of Health after 42 years of service as a branch chief. Kathleen was the first African-American woman elected to the New Market Town Council. She was an avid collector of black history memorabilia and was the author of four books, "The Town of New Market Along the Old National Road," "History of the African-American School," "History of the African-American Church" and "Through the Years with Edward 'Jack' and Martha White." Mrs. Snowden owned and operated the African-American Specialty Shop in New Market in the early 1970s.

She is survived by a son, Steve Morrison, Frederick; granddaughter, Natasha Morrison, Westminster; one sister, Toni Dorsey, Frederick; three brothers, Grafton Dorsey, Woodbine; Asa Dorsey, Gaithersburg; Larry Dorsey, Halifax, Va.; devoted niece, Midge Thomas, Mount Airy; and devoted nephews Jeffrey Morrison, New Market; Randy Snowden, Frederick; and Monroe Morrison, Westminster. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Betty Wilson, Rose Warden, Sandra Morrison, Penny Ziegler, and Dorothy Voorhees; four brothers, Alvin Dorsey, Buddy Dorsey, Hildred Dorsey, Herman Dorsey, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20 at the funeral home with Pastor Sherman Mason officiating. Interment will be at Simpson Christian Community Church, New Market.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Kathleen Snowden to Simpson Christian Community Church, New Market, MD 21774.

Mrs. Betty Jane Flohr

Mrs. Betty Jane Flohr, 81, of Rocky Ridge, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at her home. Born June 8, 1927, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Charles Vernon and Mary Nettie Moberly Fulmer.

She was the wife of Thomas A. Flohr, her husband of 56 years. Mrs. Flohr was a member of Keysville Lutheran Church. She and her husband were dairy farmers in Keymar. She enjoyed bus trips and traveling to Amish country with her sisters and to the farmers market.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth L. and Karen Flohr of Thurmont; Michael A. and Karen Flohr of Emmitsburg; three grandchildren, Lauren McCloskey and husband, Josh, and Joshua Flohr, of Emmitsburg, Jacob Flohr and wife, Tracy, of Thurmont; two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Alice Flohr; three sisters, Dorothy Droneburg and Effie Fulmer, both of Frederick, and Bonnie Kardeen of Xenia, Ohio; brothers, George Fulmer of Frederick and Robert Fulmer of Georgia; devoted niece, Kathy Clabaugh of Detour; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Claude Fulmer; and sisters, Eleanor Fulmer and Mary E. Culler.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, with the Rev. James Russell officiating. Interment will be in Union cemetery, Keysville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home Sunday, Oct. 19. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Elsie Burkett

Mrs. Elsie Virginia Stockman Burkett, 95, of Frederick, died Thursday Oct. 16, 2008, at the Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Charles Arthur Burkett, her husband of 35 years.

Born Nov. 11, 1912, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Martin Luther and Julia Catherine Marsh Stockman.

Mrs. Burkett was a member the Mount Zion Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Order # 371, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1067 of Frederick and a member of the Owls Club Nest 4002 of Frederick.

Mrs. Burkett is the last of her immediate family and is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kathleen "Billie" Burkett, a special niece and care giver, Anna Mae Miller and many other loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Burkett was preceded in death by her son, Floyd A. Burkett, her brother, Guy Floyd Stockman and her half-sisters, Carrie Sheppard and Bessie Heffner.

Visitation with family will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday Oct. 19, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, from the funeral home. The Rev. Kenneth G. Gill will officiate. Interment will be at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Jane Seibel

Mrs. Jane Leishear Seibel, of Damascus, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. She was born March 7, 1927.

She was the beloved wife of the late Charles T. Seibel. Jane is survived by her sister, Priscilla Roth; daughters, Margaret Lynne Seibel, Charlene Seibel Edwards; and son, John Miller Seibel; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and an abundance of family and gracious friends.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Carmel cemetery.

Mrs. Mary "Beth" Uppercue

Mrs. Mary "Beth" Uppercue, 40, of Thurmont, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Daniel Uppercue.

Born Dec. 5, 1967, in Frederick, she was the daughter of Brenda Morris, Lonny Shaffer and Andrew Adams.

Beth is survived by her daughters, Taylor-Shea Toms and Larissa Shaffer; her sister, Amy Parker and husband, Donnie; brother, Jason Adams and wife, Tammy; sister, Julie Adams and brother Patrick Adams; her grandparents, Dorothy and Earl Toms; a special aunt and uncle, Maudeva and Steve Frey and a special friend, Shirley Yoe. She was additionally survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial services will held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Mr. Edward Gentile Jr.

Mr. Edward Gentile Jr., 66, of Orrtanna, Pa., died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 16, 2008 at his home.

A funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at the St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Church Road, Orrtanna, Pa. with the Rev. Fr. Ken Smith celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Ignatius Church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, Pa., as well as one hour prior to the liturgy, Monday morning, at the Loyola Center at St. Ignatius.

Mr. Elzie Bullington

Mr. Elzie B. Bullington, of Rockville, died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008. He was the beloved husband of Helen L. Bullington; father of James L. Bullington, Barry C. Bullington and Gale E. Cummings; brother of Travis Bullington, Wanda Piper and Carolyn Casey; grandfather of Sarah, Lisa, Ginna, Brooke, Andrea, Ashley, Lindsey and Alexandra. Mr. Bullington is also survived by his five great-granddaughters and seven great-grandsons.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave. (Rte 28, exit 6-A just off I-270), Rockville. Service will be held 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 20, at Crusader Lutheran Church, 1605 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20851. Interment Parklawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Crusader Lutheran Church at the above address.

Mr. Donald Minnick Sr.

Donald Minnick Sr., 68, of Maggie Valley, N.C., died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, following a brief illness with cancer at his residence.

Mr. Minnick was born in Frederick and was a former resident of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. from 1973 to 2006, when he became a part-time resident of Maggie Valley, N.C. He was the son of the late George Minnick and Pauline Stottlemeyer Minnick. He had a two-year associate degree and was the president and founder of Speedy Concrete Cutting, Inc. He was a retired veteran of the Vietnam era with 23 years service in the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Minnick of Lititz, Pa.; three sons, Donald Minnick Jr. and his wife Suzi of Davie, Fla., Jeffrey Minnick of Boca Raton, Fla. and Todd Barna of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Darlene M. Diaz of Maggie Valley; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a significant partner, Angela Pecorino, of Maggie Valley, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

Arrangements are by Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Waynesville, N.C.

Mrs. Ruth Crawford

Mrs. Ruth Evelyn Crawford, 98, of Frederick, daughter of the late Rev. Charles H. Shull and Cora Little Shull, died at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, Friday, Oct. 17, 2008. She was able to stay at home until July 7, 2008.

She was preceded in death in 1983 by her husband of 50 years, Meredith A. Crawford; also by one brother, William Luther Shull; and two sisters, Hazel Taylor and Emma lames.

Mrs. Crawford was born in Massillon, Ohio July 5, 1910. She moved to Frederick County in 1924, when her father was appointed to churches here.

She graduated from Frederick High School, Class of 1928 and from the Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1932. Mrs. Crawford nursed at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She served as superintendent of Frederick Emergency Hospital and also when it became the Frederick County Chronic Hospital, which was the forerunner of what is now Citizens Nursing Home.

She served on the Governor's Council for the Aging under Gov. Tawes, which founded the Senior Citizen Centers. She opened what is now College View Nursing Home as the administrator. She worked as an assistant for dentist, Dr. Raymond Damazo. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church for a number of years, was a member of BPW, and the Soroptomist Club.

She was a member of the School House Quilters, which met in the Senior Center that she helped to found. She loved handwork and crocheted from when she was five years old, knitted bandages and socks during World War II, and made more than a thousand baby hats for the hospital.

Surviving are, one daughter, Mary Lynne C. Thomas of Braddock Heights; one grandson, Seth G. Thomas and wife Juliet and one great-grandson, Grant Crawford Thomas of Waynesboro, Pa.; one sister, Alma Fogle of Frederick; nieces and nephews; and friends, Sara Lynn Grandstaff, Margaret and Earl Bere, and Ann and Charles Smith.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. The Rev. Rebecca J.P. Hoover, will officiate. Those wishing to attend should assemble within the main gate of the cemetery by 9:45 a.m. All attending are invited to join the family for lunch after the ceremony at the family's home, 6827 Maryland Ave., Braddock Heights, MD, 21714.

In remembrance, donations may be made to the Braddock Lutheran Church in care of Margaret Bere, 7009 Edgemont Road, Frederick, MD 21702.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Mrs. Lucille Ponton

Mrs. Lucille Harbaugh Ponton, 89, of Frederick, died Friday, Oct. 17, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of John Lee Ponton, who died Jan. 20, 1999.

Born Oct. 22, 1918 in Frederick County, she was a daughter of the late Norman and Hazel Green Harbaugh.

Mrs. Ponton was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1937 and graduate of the Frederick Academy of the Visitation. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, and a member of Alvin G. Quynn Sports Hall of Fame because of her expert marksmanship with small bore rifles.

She was a member of the Frederick, Maryland, United States and International Women's Rifle Teams. She was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Frederick where she served as president and state president of the Maryland Federation. She was co-owner of Mar-Lu Restaurant on East Patrick Street for 36 years.

Surviving is a stepson, Gerry Lee Ponton and wife Betty of Frederick; several cousins, James M. Green of Frederick, Marlin Green and wife Gloria of Thurmont, Clifford Green and wife Evelyn of Lewistown, Laura Virginia Wilhide of Walkersville, Laura Spencer Nottingham of Nassawadox, Va., Margaret Green Lebherz and husband Joseph of Frederick, Maxine Hornberger and husband Robert of Sinking Springs, Pa.; and Gene Green of Walkersville.

She will be remembered by special friends, Rosemarie Evans of Frederick, Phyllis Trickett of Oakland, Mildred Basore of Hagerstown, Charles and Beverly Austin, and Gregory and Joann LaCoste of Frederick. Also her many friends at Bob Evans Restaurant of MD-40 West; and the VFW Golf Club Ladies Nine Hole Group; and the nursing staff at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, who provided wonderful care for Lucille.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Vada Harbaugh; cousins, Charles Edward Green, Charles Victor Greene, Susan Green Dukes, Elizabeth Schwien, Helen Conner, and Daisey Isabel Conner.

Family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick; services will follow with the Rev. Kenneth Dunnington officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Ponton to the Arthritis Foundation, 22 S. Market St., Suite 2A, Frederick, MD 21701 or the Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 W. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701.
