Mrs. Gloria Jean Carter

Gloria Jean Carter, affectionately known as "Jean," quietly left us Oct. 15, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by Charles Thompson Jr.; her children, Charlotte Mbaye, Charles Thompson III (Terri), Mary, Michael (Eugenia), Cynthia and John Thompson, Tahjia Carter, Millie Heffner-Thompson and Tyshieka Smith; sisters, Timmi Cunningham (Robert), Catherine Hogan and Bessie Carter (Carroll); 27 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanette Jackson.

Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick.

A home going service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 98 All Saints St., Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent directly to Rollins Funeral Home.

Arrangements are by Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Eva Leatherman

Mrs. Eva Esther Leatherman, 90, of Middletown, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home, Boonsboro. She was the wife of Charles Edward Leatherman, who died Dec. 25, 1996.

Born in Middletown, on May 14, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Ralph and Ruth Schildknecht Kepler.

She was employed by the Hanover Shoe Co. in Middletown for many years and retired from the Middletown Elementary School after 13 years in the cafeteria.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown for more than 70 years and a member of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Co. where she served as chaplain for a number of years.

She is survived by one brother, Daniel Kepler of Middletown; two sisters, Betty Swope of Boonsboro and Hazel Early of Wolfsville; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Alberta Kepler, Cleo Bowman, and Miriam Wolf.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in the chapel at Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, from the church. Rev. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman, her pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in Zion Lutheran cemetery, Middletown. There will also be a viewing one hour prior to the church service on Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or to the Middletown Volunteer Fire Co.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Swope, Dale Wolf, Wayne Early, Ralph Bowman, Floyd Calvin Leatherman, and Wayne Leatherman.

Arrangements are by Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Mr. Robert R. Furman

Robert R. Furman, 93, a builder and developer in the Washington area for more than 50 years, died Oct. 14, 2008, in Adamstown.

Born and raised in Trenton, N.J., he graduated from Princeton University with a degree in civil engineering.

As a commissioned reserve officer, he served in World War II with the Army Corps of Engineers, where he was construction management assistant under Gen. Lesley Groves while building the Pentagon. Gen. Groves then selected him to work on the Manhattan Project as a chief liaison between the military and the scientists.

He also helped direct efforts to locate and monitor the actions of Axis atomic research, including being deployed to Germany as part of the Alsos Mission. Gen. Groves tasked him to deliver a key component of the atomic bomb to Tinian aboard the USS Indianapolis.

After the war, he opened his construction business in the Washington area, beginning with residential construction and growing into a well-known commercial building and development company.

Furman Builders Inc. built more than 800 commercial and residential projects, primarily in the metropolitan area. He was a five-year leader in sales for Butler Manufacturing.

As a past president of both the Rotary Club of Bethesda and the Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce, Bob has made many lasting friends and associates throughout the metropolitan business community.

He and his wife Mary raised four children, Martha, Julia, David and Serena in Bethesda, where they were active at St. John Episcopal Church. He was president of the Edgemoor Club and Class Agent for his class at Princeton. His love of barbershop music made him a lifelong active member of the D.C. Chapter of SPEBSQA.

They moved to Buckingham's Choice retirement community in Adamstown in 2000, where he continued to manage his holdings, participated in many activities and played tennis through the spring of this year.

He leaves his wife, Mary; children, Martha Keating of Church Creek, Julia Costello of Mokelumne Hill, Calif., David Furman of Kensington, and Serena Furman of Stow, Ma. He leaves five grandchildren, Jonas and Matthew Keating, Nathan, Caitlin and Samantha Furman; and a great-grandson, Charles Keating. He is survived by his brother, Richard Furman of Trenton, N.J.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Buckingham's Choice, 3200 Bakers Circle, Adamstown. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending donations to the Buckingham's Choice Resident Assistance Fund.

Mrs. Alice Thompson

Mrs. Alice K. Thompson, 84, formerly of Frederick, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Mary Jean's, her niece, residence in Edinburg, Va. She was the wife of the late Joseph Morgan Thompson.

Born Jan. 24, 1924 in Kemptown, she was the daughter of the late Ivy (Davis) and Charles Nehouse. Alice was a dietitian for many years at the Asbury Methodist Home in Gaithersburg.

She attended the First Church of Columbia Furnace in Edinburg, and in her spare time love to enjoy the music at the Woodstock Moose Club. Alice's hobbies included collecting owls, salt shakers, lamps, playing both BINGO and dominos. She was a former member of the Senior Citizens Club in the Beltsville/Clarksburg area.

Survivors include her three daughters, Josephine Dove and husband Jerald of Adamstown, Ivy Jane VanWinkle and husband Henry of Boonsboro, and Ruth Ann Mowell of Poolesville; four sons, Joseph Makel Thompson and wife Jo of Martinsburg, W.Va., Albert Lee Thompson of Poolesville, John Morgan Thompson and wife Dorothy of Frederick and Donald Wayne Thompson and wife Connie of Frederick; 24 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Anna Payne and husband Elwood of Baltimore; a daughter-in-law, Linda Thompson of Inwood, W.Va.; a sister-in-law, Cathryn Nehouse of Mount Airy; her niece Mary Jean Hall of Edninburg, Va. and several other nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Ronnie William Thompson; a sister, Mildred Keeney; a brother, Edward Nehouse; a daughter-in-law, Mary Thompson; and a son-in-law, Donald Lee Mowell.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, Pastor Brian Duncan will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Columbia Furnace Youth Group, c/o Pastor Brian Duncan, 855 Hickory Lane, Fort Valley, VA 22652.

Mrs. Bonnie Edwards

Mrs. Bonnie Louise Edwards, 65, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008. She was the wife of Lawrence Edwards Sr.

Born Aug. 19, 1943 in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of Helen Cade Smith of Richmond, Va. and the late William Thomas Smith.

Bonnie enjoyed walking, gardening and spending time with her family. She was an animal lover, especially cats. Mrs. Edwards will be remembered for her famous smile.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Don Edwards and wife Mary of Walkersville and Vickie Lynn Edwards of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren, D. J. Edwards, Joey Edwards, Nicholas Edwards, Tyler Martin and Laila Edwards; a sister, Fay Tyler and husband George of Louisa, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She will also be remembered by her many friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Owen Edwards Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in her memory, to the Jefferson County Humane Society, P.O. Box 147, Charles Town, W.Va.

Mrs. Pauline Haugh

Mrs. Pauline C. (Clopper) Haugh, 88, a resident of Quincy Village, Quincy, Pa. and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died at 6:45 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, in the nursing home.

Born March 24, 1920 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Dallas R. and Agnes (Boswell) Clopper. She moved to the Roadside area of Washington Township, Franklin County, Pa. at the age of 2.

Mrs. Haugh was a graduate of Waynesboro High School, Class of 1938.

She and her husband, the late Mr. William L. Haugh Sr., were married July 5, 1940 in Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro. They lived on Main Street in Waynesboro for many years before moving to North Woodlea Drive, Waynesboro in March of 1991. Mr. Haugh died Oct. 1, 1994 and she subsequently moved to the Cottages at Quincy Village in December 1995 and entered the nursing home Sept. 25, 2007.

Mrs. Haugh spent most of her life as a homemaker.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where she was a member of Mrs. Knupp's Sunday school class, sang in the choir and served on various committees within the church. She also was a member of South Chapter AARP #2977, Waynesboro, where she sang with the Southern Aires Choral Group and National AARP.

Mrs. Haugh enjoyed reading and was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles.

She is survived by her son, William L. Haugh Jr. and his wife Mary of Middletown; two grandsons, Robert A. Haugh and his wife Karan of Monte Rio, Calif. and Daniel W. Haugh of Frederick; two great-grandsons, Brody W. Haugh and Reese J. Haugh of Frederick; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Klages, Edith Galloway and Dallaseyne Pensinger; and one brother, Franklin Clopper.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, in Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church St., Waynesboro PA 17268 or Quincy Village, P.O. Box 217, Quincy, PA 17247.

Mr. Duke Snyder III

Mr. (Duke) Rowland F. Snyder III, 65, of Frederick, died peacefully at his home Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008 after a four-year battle with cancer. He was the husband of Linda Joyce Snyder, his wife of 14 years. Born Oct. 25, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Rowland F. and Nina (Aucott) Snyder.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a master chief cryptologic technician until 1984. His military decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal and two Navy Achievement Medals. A follow-up career as a senior software design engineer/consultant with Data Systems Analysts at Fort Detrick.

He was an avid skier who enjoyed the cold windy slippery slopes of New England, traveling with his wife, banging on the piano, walking, gardening, and especially the company of his grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two children from a previous marriage, son, Russell Snyder of Los Angeles, Calif. and daughter, Rachel Snyder and grandson, Naquoia Meister of Eugene, Ore.; his sisters, Jane Anne Stefan of Olympia, Wash., Doris Patricia McGuckin and husband Hugh of Skipjack, Pa.; his current wife's children, Deborah Coates and husband Gary of Jefferson, Kimberly Rhodes and significant other Cornell T. Lewis Jr. of Walkersville; the children of Deborah and Gary Coates (always his grandchildren), Andrew, Alley, and Juliana. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Iona McGrew; brothers-in-law, Ronald McGrew and wife Mary, and Dennis McGrew of Clarksburg; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nina Eileen Snyder.

A casual memorial gathering will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at the barn in Eastview. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lance Armstrong Live Strong Foundation, Johns Hopkins Foundation Baltimore, or Hospice of Frederick County.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mr. Joseph Brashears

Mr. Joseph O. Brashears, 94, of Frederick, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at his home. He was the husband of Vivian Stottlemeyer Brashears, his wife of 34 years.

Born Dec. 30, 1913, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Alice and John Brashears.

He was a member of Oak Hill Church of God. Mr. Brashears retired, after 14 years of service, from Mack Truck. He raised horses and collected pencil sharpeners.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Jeanette Eckard of Westminster; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three step-children, Susan Saunders, Sandra Eyler and Samuel Morgan. He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters, and a grandson, Gary L. Eckard.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23.

Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Woodsboro.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Oak Hill Church of God, 10053 LeGore Bridge Road, Keymar.

Mr. John Duvall

Mr. John Brewer Duvall, 89, of Mount Airy, died Sunday evening, Oct. 19, 2008, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Mount Airy. He was the husband of the late Lois Elaine Brown Duvall, who preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 2004.

Born Jan. 3, 1919, in Montgomery County, he was a son of the late Franklin E. and Irene King Duvall. He retired from Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.

Mr. Duvall was a longtime member of Montgomery United Methodist Church, Damascus. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing; as well as hunting. He was also an avid collector of guns and knives.

He is survived by three daughters, Shirley Devilbiss and husband, Jim, of Frederick, Darlene Hernandez and husband, Steve, of New Mexico and Donna Schoenberg and husband, Herb, of Mount Airy; as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. The funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, from his church, Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus. The Rev. Dr. Wade A. Martin will officiate.

Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Helen Moulder

Mrs. Helen Rae Moulder, 79, of Frederick, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Washington County Hospital, in Hagerstown. She was the loving wife of the late Henry Harrison "Hank" Moulder, who died March 1, 1999.

She was born in Ludlow, Ky., Sept. 19, 1929, and she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Hattie Darby Cummins.

Mrs. Moulder was a homemaker for most of her life and was an active member of the Women of the Moose Lodge # 371, Frederick.

Surviving her are her two children, Charles E. Moulder of Hagerstown and Judith A. Miller of Layton, Utah; two brothers, James Cummins and Elmer Cummins Jr., both of Kentucky; three sisters, Virginia Brandon of Kentucky, Eleanor Bell of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Lou McNeil of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Jessica Childs of Pennsylvania and William Moulder of Elkton; one great-grandson, Abram Childs; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Cummins.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Moose Lodge will conduct a memorial service at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Burnis D. Barrett, will officiate. Interment will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Life Care Center, c/o Moose Charities Inc., Moose International, Moose Heart, IL, 60539.
