Mr. Richard Shelor

Richard Scott Shelor, of Chesapeake, Va., passed away Oct. 13, 2008, after a long illness. He was 83 years old, born June 7, 1925, in West Chester, Pa.

He graduated from West Chester High School, and then spent six years in the Army Air Corps. While enlisted, he also attended Penn State University for one year.

While serving his country during World War II, Richard was stationed in the Azores. After the war, he worked in Frederick, where he met and later married Mary Madelyn Gilbert in July 1948. They have one son, Thomas Scott Shelor of Virginia Beach.

Richard worked at Fort Detrick in Frederick, and most recently at the NARF in Norfolk, Va. He retired from government service in 1983 and also owned and operated a saw sharpening business in Great Bridge for nine years. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 11 in Frederick, attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Great Bridge and was active in the AIDS cook-in ministry.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 233 Mann Drive, Chesapeake, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Organ Fund.

Interment will be at a later date in Frederick at Mount Olivet cemetery.

Arrangements are by Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, Chesapeake.

Mr. James Herrell Sr.

James R. Herrell Sr., 73, of Jefferson, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was married to his loving wife of almost 53 years, Bettye Herrell. Born Jan. 3, 1935, in Jefferson, he was the son of the late Claud R. and Ruth (Taylor) Herrell.

Mr. Herrell worked for 29 years for Ausherman Construction Co. He was a loving and caring father, husband and family member.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his four children, Bonita Simmerman and husband, Danny, Brenda Cole and husband, John, Michelle Hill and significant other, Walt, and James Herrell and wife, Kimberly. He was the grandfather of seven, Maria, Andrew, Mariah, D.J., Jared, Madison, and Mason. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Myers and Rebecca Shry and brother, Alvin Herrell, all of Virginia. Additionally he is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Keeney & Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel.

The interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made directly to the family during this difficult time.

Mr. Emory Remsberg Jr.

Mr. Emory Earl Remsberg Jr., 82, of Adamstown, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of 61 years to Mary Toms Remsberg.

Born in Buckeystown on Jan. 22, 1926, he was a son of the late Emory Earl Sr., and Dorothy Derr Remsberg.

Mr. Remsberg was a graduate of the Frederick High School, Class of 1943 and proudly served his country from 1944 to 1947 in the United States Navy. He had been a dairy farmer for many years in Buckeystown, and had worked for Massey-Ferguson Inc., as the district manager, and for International Harvester as the service manager in Baltimore, also for the government at Fort Detrick and for the Frederick Motor Co.

He was a 61-year member of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, the Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers, the Frederick County Farm Bureau and was a past director, a member and past president of the Carroll Manor Lions Club and a past director of the Federal Land Bank.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is one brother, Robert T. Remsberg of Woodbridge, Va.; two sisters, Marianna Shea of Naugatuck, Conn. and Rachel L. Ford of Frederick; two grandchildren, Garry Lee Remsberg Jr. and wife, Amra, of Juneau, Alaska, and Deanna Lynn Remsberg Ridgely and husband, John, of Frederick; three great-grandchildren, Valerie Faye Remsberg, Natasha Leighanne Remsberg and Grayson Daniel Ridgely; and many nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by a daughter-in-law, Anna Remsberg of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his son, Garry Lee Remsberg Sr.; two brothers, Willis D. Remsberg and Paul D. Remsberg; and one sister, Virginia Schwartz.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. The Rev. Barbara Kershner Daniels, pastor of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, will officiate. Those wishing to attend should assemble within the main gate of the cemetery by 9:45 a.m., to proceed to the gravesite.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 W. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Julie Briggs

Julie Ann Briggs, T.O.C., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008.

Survived by her children, Bill, Robert, Daniel and Julie Silver and was preceded in death by her son, Jon Silver.

She is also survived by three sisters, Joyce Bladen, Mary Lou Carta, Margaret Jane Hetherington and two brothers, Michael and Joseph Carta.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD (hiltonfh.com).

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, P.O. Box 67, Barnesville, MD 20838 with viewing one hour prior.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Julie Ann's name to St. Mary's.

Mrs. Helen Snook

Mrs. Helen Biser Snook, 91, of Walkersville, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 19, at Northampton Manor, Frederick. She was the wife of Grayson Palmer Snook, who predeceased her Sept. 5, 1970.

Born in Adamstown, Sept. 9, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Erie Calvin and Lizzie Adaline Coblentz Biser. Helen was an amazing mother and grandmother, who loved knitting and watching a variety of sports. She also played women's field ball in Adamstown during her teens.

She was a member of the Adamstown Community Church: Trinity Evangelical and Reformed, where she was a faithful member of the choir, often singing solos and duets on Sunday mornings and at special services. She was also actively involved with the Willing Workers and Adamstown Homemakers for many years. Helen assisted her husband as distributor of The Washington Post for 30 years, was employed at Woolco, and more recently by the Department of Aging at The Taney Village.

Surviving are one son, Dennis Irvin Snook; granddaughters, Nikki Martin and husband, Amos Martin, and Natalie Scolnick and husband, Todd Scolnick; great-granddaughters, Shyra Jane Martin and Logann Jane Scolnick. Helen was the fourth of 11 children. Her siblings being Richard C. Biser, Elizabeth Biser Henn, Margaret Biser Ringer, Marietta Biser Lewis, Joseph E. Biser, Paul M. Biser, M. Roland Biser, Dorothy Biser Southerly Libby, Lorraine Biser Duncan and extremely devoted sister, Katherine Biser Houff.

Private graveside services will be announced at a future date.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Mr. James Hawse Sr.

Mr. James Oliver "Bill" Hawse Sr., 83, of Damascus, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. He was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Layton Hawse.

Born July 3, 1925 in Lewisdale, he was a son of the late William Hamond and Mary Ellen Keith. In his younger years, Bill worked on various area farms. He later retired from the Montgomery County Street Department, Silver Spring, with 30 years of service.

Not only was his job of great importance to him, but also his family and church, Bethesda United Methodist Church, Damascus.

Besides his wife, he is survived by children, Jeannie Bullough of Outer Banks, N.C., Linda Elizabeth Taylor and husband, Steven, of Keedysville, Cathy Fine and husband, Dave, of Braddock Heights, James Oliver Hawse Jr. of Bethesda and David Eugene Hawse and wife, Melissa, of Frederick; grandchildren, Heather Elliott of Boonsboro, Katie Wright of Ohio, Shawn Wright of Gaithersburg, Joshua Hawse of Fairfield, Pa., Olivia Hawse of Baltimore and Kyle Hawse of New Market; and a great-granddaughter, Angel Hawse of Fairfield, Pa.; as well as siblings, Louise Rhine, Hazel Miller, Marie Jones and John, Wayne William and Allen Hawse; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Roy Bullough in July 2008 and six siblings.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, 11901 Bethesda Church Road, Damascus.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the church. Rev. Dr. Henry G. Butler will officiate. Interment will take place in the church cemetery.

Arrangements are by Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the church in Mr. Hawse's name.

Mrs. Mary House Boyer

Mary V. House Boyer, 98, of Jefferson and recently of Homewood Health Care Center, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 5, 1910, in Brookville, she was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Mamie (Musgrove) Nicholson. She is predeceased by her two husbands, T. Nathan House Sr., and Hershel T. Boyer Sr.

Mary worked for Price Electric as well as the United States Post Office in Jefferson. She was a member of the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Jefferson.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas N. House Jr. and wife, Shirley, of Littleton, N.C., Robert W. House and wife, Judith, of Frederick and Ronald L. House and wife, Rosemary, of Frederick; stepdaughter, Mary L. VanSant and husband, Edward R., of San Antonio, Texas, and stepson Michael E. Boyer and wife, Jenny, of Jefferson. She is the grandmother of Randall L. House, Jeffrey T. House, Brian W. House, Nathan E. House, Aaron K. House, and Linda A. House-Ellen. She was the stepgrandmother of Deborah A. Proffitt, Lynda J. Boyer, Brian E. Boyer, Mark K. Boyer, Laureen M. Boyer, and Julie M. Humbel. She survived by five great-grandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Charles T. Nicholson Jr. and wife, Margaret, of Damascus. In addition to her parents and husbands, she is predeceased by her brother, Allen L. Nicholson; stepson, Hershel T. Boyer Jr.; granddaughter, Anita L. House; and stepgrandchildren, Stephen E. VanSant, Patricia A. VanSant and Jeffrey A. Boyer.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, 3864 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, with services beginning at 1 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church cemetery, Jefferson. Officiating will be the Rev. Katrina L. Holland.

Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas House, Robert House, Ronald House, Michael Boyer, Randall House and Mark Boyer.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Boyer's name to the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church at the above address. Arrangement conducted by the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mrs. Mildred Tawney

Mrs. Mildred "Millie" Elizabeth Tawney, 84, of Frederick, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at her residence. She was the wife of the Late Herman Calvin Tawney. Born June 21, 1924, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late John Melvin and Katherine (Roberts) Stone.

Mrs. Tawney was a 1942 graduate of Frederick High School and a graduate of the St. Francis School of Nursing. She spent her career as a Registered Nurse at many different locations. Mrs. Tawney served as a nurse for 11 years in Baltimore, 10 years at Frederick Memorial Hospital and the last nine years at the Home for the Aged.

Later in life, she worked as an operator for the C & P Telephone Co. in Charleston, W.Va. She belonged to the American Association of Nursing and The Maryland Association of Nursing. She was a life member of the F.S.K. Post #4 American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Women of the Moose #371, and Chapter 101 Order of the Eastern Star. She volunteered for a number of years with the American Red Cross.

Mrs. Tawney is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Mount Olivet cemetery. Those wishing to attend should assemble at the FSK Chapel of the cemetery by 12:45 p.m.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mrs. Charlotte Abrecht

Mrs. Charlotte L. Abrecht, 86, a resident of Smith Health Center, Mountaintop, Pa., and formerly of Frederick, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at the Smith Health Center. She was the wife of the late Norman Edgar Abrecht Sr., who died Jan. 9, 2005.

Born March 3, 1922, in McKaig, she was a daughter of the late Robert Pikney and Martha Catherine Mayne Droneburg. Mrs. Abrecht was an active member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren for many years where she was a member of the BYDANHO Sunday School Class, the women's and quilter's guilds, and the Fellowship Committee of the Church and she enjoyed gardening.

She worked at Frederick Tailoring for a number of years, and later with American Optical Co., Frederick. She was also self-employed for many years as a seamstress.

She is survived by one son, Norman E. Abrecht Jr. and wife, Temple, of Frederick; two daughters, Jacqueline Kay Matthews and husband, Ron, of Drums, Pa., and Laverna Troxell and husband, Bernard, of Laurel; six grandchildren, Chad Abrecht of Frederick, Holly Franz and husband Eric of Frederick, Mitchell Matthews and wife Dawn of Hanover Township, Pa., Lucas Matthews and wife, Kerry, of Warrior Run, Pa., Craig Foster and wife, Barbara, of Harper's Ferry, W.Va., Peggy Foster Strange, of Salisbury; 14 great-grandchildren, Vinny, Emily, Lily, Samuel Matthews, Kaiden and Mason Matthews, Amanda, Catlin, Dale and Olivia Foster, Wyatt and Owen Franz, Jessica and Robert Strange; and a number of nieces and nephews including a special niece, Eleanor Foy and husband, Sonny, of Baltimore.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Louise Foster, in 2001; two sisters and six brothers.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, from the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick.

Friends may also call from 10:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Rev. Dr. Paul Mundey, and Rev. Dr. James S. Flora, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in her name to the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Rebecca Williams

Mrs. Rebecca "Becky" (Fifer) Williams, 61, ended a long struggle with pancreatic cancer Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008. She was in hospice care during her last weeks and went to eternal sleep at home with her family at her side. Surely she is now back in the presence of our Lord in Heaven. She is survived by her husband of more than 41 years, Larry Williams.

Becky was born the fourth of five children to Mary Fries Fifer and the late Dr. Jesse S. Fifer at 3:42 a.m. Oct. 27, 1946, in Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore.

Surviving beside her husband and mother are her daughter, Jessica Fachler and husband, Michael; her son, Joshua Williams and his wife, Christie; four grandchildren, whom she adored, Mark Fachler, Allyson Fachler, Matthew Williams and Tyler Williams; two sisters, Rogina Isaacs and husband, Ray, Robin Nelson; a brother, Jay Fifer and wife, Virginia; a brother-in-law, Ronald Wachter. Becky will also be remembered by numerous nephews, nieces and many caring and loving friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Wachter.

When she was 9 months old, the Fifer family left Baltimore and moved to Buckeystown. When Becky was 15, the family moved once more to a new home in western Frederick.

Becky has been a life-long member of the Church of the Brethren and has participated in many church activities and committees, most recently she has dedicated herself to the church of the Brethren Disaster Ministries helping rebuild homes and caring for children of victims.

Becky attended the two-room Buckeystown Elementary School, West Frederick Jr. High and Frederick High. Following high school, she attended Bridgewater College in Virginia and graduated with at bachelor's degree in sociology. While at Bridgewater, she participated in varsity tennis and field hockey. She later attended Hood College and earned a master's degree in education, specializing in math and science.

As the consummate career educator, she recently completed a 30-year tenure with Frederick County Public Schools. Her first two years were at Parkway and Walkersville Elementary Schools. She then took leave to stay at home and raise her two children. During those years, she worked part-time teaching at the Glade Valley Church of the Brethren preschool. When she returned to the school system she spent the next 28 years at New Market Elementary, retiring in June 2007.

During her teaching career, she was a member of FCTA, MSTA and NEA. Following retirement, she joined Frederick Co. Retired School Personnel. She also was granted lifetime membership in PTSA.

To all those who met, knew or worked with Becky, she was the one who would care for those in need. She could always be relied on for support and caring whether professionally or personally. While assisting, she would do her best to avoid any recognition in the form of awards or accolades. She truly was an example of an Angel sent to Earth to demonstrate how to live and share love with others.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

A service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Paul Mundey, Rev. Dr. Mike Watson and Pastor Brian Messler will officiate. Interment will be in Glade cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made in her name to one of the following: Mid-Atlantic District Disaster Fund, P.O. Box 480, New Windsor, MD 21776; Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCan), 2221 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 131, El Segundo, CA 90245; or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
