Mrs. Judith King

Judith Lee (Muth) King, 61, of Hagerstown and formerly of Frederick, died peacefully at John Hopkins Hospital Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008.

She was born Aug. 14, 1947 in Waynesboro, Pa., to Doris Muth and the late LeRoy Muth.

Judith (known to everyone as Ms. Judie) was a great mother, grandmother, daughter, and friend. She loved people, animals, and the Dallas Cowboys.

She was a 1965 graduate of Severna Park High School.

She was a member of West End Baptist Chapel, Hagerstown.

She is survived by her six children, Anthony "AJ" L. King Jr. and wife, Ronda King of Maugansville, Brandie King of Hagerstown, Michael Weedon and fianc? Kendra Brooks of Frederick, William Gilbert of Hagerstown, Wendy and husband Chris Long of Rutherfordton, N.C. and Raymond "Chip" L. Muth of Annapolis.

She had 14 grandchildren, Anthony, Aalayah, Allison, Makayla, Aniyah, Delont?, Khy-le, Brooklyn, Tyleah, Kara, Michael, Emily, Joey and John Ross.

Along with her mother, Doris Muth, she was survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She also left behind to cherish her devoted memory, Anthony Carroll.

She was preceded in death by her father, LeRoy Muth and sister, Vicky Lucile Muth.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at West End Baptist Chapel, 101 Buena Vista Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Shane Wilt officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family in care of Anthony L. King Jr., P.O. Box 81, Maugansville, MD 21767.

Mr. Dennis M. Goetz

Dennis M. "Denny" Goetz, 53, of Fairfield, Mont., died Thursday, Oct. 2.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Oppossumtown Pike, Frederick. Reception will follow at AMVETS Post 2, 702 E. South St., Frederick.

Mr. Ronald Biser

Mr. Ronald W. Biser, 67, of Gettysburg, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at the Gettysburg Hospital.

He was born Aug. 31, 1941, in Waynesboro, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Madeline Davis Biser. Mr. Biser is survived by his wife, Carol Wade Biser.

Mr. Biser was a member of Germantown Church of God in Cascade. He was a 1959 graduate of Smithsburg High School, Smithsburg. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict serving in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence. Mr. Biser worked for a number of years at Doubleday Inc in Smithsburg and later at NVR Homes in Thurmont, until his retirement in 2003. He was a member of the Cascade American Legion, AARP and TRA of Gettysburg. Mr. Biser will also be missed by his dogs, Misty and Luke and his cat Smokie.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Biser is survived by three daughters, Jeanna Hess and her husband, Bob, of Thurmont; Janeen Nichels of Baltimore; Ann-Dee Day and her husband, Kevin, of Hagerstown; three grandchildren, Amber Rudisill, Kayla Fotta, and Tyler Fotta; two brothers, Delbert Biser and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesboro, Pa.; Michael Biser and his wife, Robin, of Waynesboro, Pa.; a number of nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Rita "Pete" Wagaman.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, from the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, Pa., with the Rev. Mark Hosler officiating. Memorials can be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325.

Mr. John Berryman

Mr. John W. Berryman Sr., 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at his home with his loving wife Peggy Zembower at his side.

Berryman was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Jane (nee Harris) Berryman. He is survived by daughter, Sharon; son, John W. Jr. and daughter-in-law, Donna L. Berryman; his stepchildren, Martha L. Buchman, Nancy S. and Kevin E. Moore, Beth M. and Robert Wieser, Bruce R. Jr. and Kimberly S. Zembower; his grandchildren, Christopher and Emily Bull, Lori Robinson, Darryl and Kevin Buchman, Melanie and Chris Hardesty, Michael and Dawn Miller, and Katy and Jenna Zembower; his great-grandchildren, Claire, Clark, Mark, Corey, Dakota, Julia and Maria; and his sister, Hilda McCusker. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Donald L. Bull.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road (at Franklin Blvd.), Reisterstown, with the Rev. Phillip Fogarty, of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, officiating.

Interment will be private. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Pikesville Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a memorial service at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Roy Nelson

Mr. Roy M. Nelson, 77, of Frederick, died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008. Born in Detroit, Mich., Mr. Nelson lived in Michigan for 40 years, before moving to Naples, Fla., in 1971. He and his wife, Gretchen, moved to Frederick in 2004.

Nelson is survived by his wife, Gretchen; children, Deb Nelson and her husband Dave Splaine of Rhode Island; Lisa Edwards, her husband, Jim, and their two children, Jimmy and Sarah of Frederick; Ted Nelson of Washington; his grandsons, David and Billy Nelson of Naples, Fla.; and his brothers, William and Donald Nelson, both of Naples, Fla. Nelson was predeceased by his oldest son, Bill.

Nelson graduated from Hillsdale College in Michigan in 1955. He had a career in advertising in Detroit and Chicago, and later owned Nelson Marine with his brother in Naples, Fla. A competitive sailor and golfer, his passions were skiing and boating with his family. Volunteer activities included the Naples Rotary, YMCA of Collier County, Collier Automotive Museum, and the Collier County Conservancy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mr. Louis Wilcom

Mr. Louis Weber Wilcom, 68, of Adamstown, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at his residence.

He was the husband of Hazel Wilcom.-- Born in Urbana on Oct. 29, 1939, he was the son of the late Charles Francis and Catherine Murphy Wilcom.

He graduated from Frederick High School, class of 1959. Mr. Wilcom worked as a dairy farmer in the family business, before working as a mechanic and welder for CANAM Steel.--Along with his father and brothers, he established the 75-80 Drag-A-Way and was a partner in the Wilcom Family Partnership. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Association, serving as vice president/negotiator of his local chapter. In his free time, Mr. Wilcom enjoyed fixing anything and everything he could get his hands on and reading about historical events and science books.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Keith Wilcom, of Frederick and a daughter, Anita Wilcom Moore and her husband, Patrick, of Olney; his grandchildren, Hunter and Sydney Moore; four siblings, Jerome Wilcom and wife, Carol, of Monrovia; William Wilcom and wife, Betty, of Monrovia; Anthony Wilcom and wife, Alice, of Walkersville; and Charlotte Miller and husband, John, of Columbus, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Michael James Wilcom and Charles Francis "Tucker" Wilcom Jr.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.-- Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home, Deacon John L. Manley officiating.-- Serving as pallbearers will be Patrick Moore, Douglas Wilcom, Gary Moxley, Chris Wilcom, Alan Wilcom, and Mark Wilcom.--Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702-1799.

Mrs. Mary Wastler

Mrs. Mary Wastler, 92, a resident of St. Catherine's Nursing Center and formerly of Thurmont, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center, Emmitsburg.

She was the wife of the late Charles W. Wastler, who died May 14, 1971. Born June 15, 1916, in Lantz, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Anna Adelsberger Wilhide.

Mrs. Wastler was a lifelong member of Deerfield United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Thurmont Senior Citizens and a member of Graceham Ladies Fellowship for many years. She retired from Claire Frock in 1987 after 43 years, at age 71. She liked reading, traveling, crafts and baking cakes.

Mrs. Wastler was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter, Elsie M. Secrest and husband, Richard, of Mercersburg, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Rachael Wastler; a brother-in-law, Leo Wastler and wife, Phyllis; and five grandchildren, Vicky Linton and husband, Charles; Kimberly Conder and husband, Greg; Anna McManus and husband, Chris; Tracey Depasquale and husband, Eugene; Richard T. Secrest and wife, Kelly; six great-grandchildren, Chasity Linton, Justin Conder, Bradley Conder, Amber McManus, Benjamin Depasquale and Sarah Depasquale. Several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Jenette Needy, also survive. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles J. Wastler; a great-grandson, Hunter McManus; two brothers, Albert Wilhide and Calvin Wilhide; and two half brothers, Lloyd Wilhide and Chester Wilhide.

Mrs. Wastler is at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, where friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27 at the funeral home with the Rev. Ernest Thayil, Catoctin United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

Mr. Ora Delauter

Mr. Ora Franklin Delauter, 94, of Cavetown, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at Fahrney Keedy Home and Village in Boonsboro. Born March 22, 1914, on Highland School Road in Myersville, he was the son of the late Charles and Emma Cora Hoover Delauter.

Ora was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Goldie Pearl Smith Delauter, whom he married on Nov. 20, 1942.

He retired from the Washington County Board of Education Aug. 22, 2008. Earlier, he and his wife operated a grocery store in Cavetown for many years. In 1942, he entered the United States Army and served in World War II as a staff sergeant in the Fifth Armored Division, known as "Patton's Ghosts." He participated in the Normandy Invasion and fought in northern France. While in the military, he received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of Grossnickle Church of the Brethren of Myersville, Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company, the Disabled American Veterans and the Fifth Armored Division Association.

He is survived by a foster son, Harry G. Morningstar and his wife, Louise Ray, of Waynesboro, Pa.; grandchildren Harry Morningstar Jr. and wife, Jill; Ora Ray Morningstar and wife, Teresa, of Waynesboro, Pa.; and Misty Ray Morningstar Lucente and husband, Richard, of Ijamsville; great-grandchildren, Dr. Valera Ray Morningstar Hess, Emily Victoria Morningstar, Elizabeth Clair Morningstar, Victor Ray Morningstar, Christian Ray Lucente and Rebecca Ray Lucente; his sister, Letha Delauter of Frederick; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Delauter Main, Eva Delauter Schultz, Clair Delauter Grossnickle, and brothers, Silas, Charles Welty, Chester, Aaron Russell and Lee Delauter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27 fromJ.L. Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg, with the Revs. Tim and Donna Ritchey Martin officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, with military services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742, or Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, 11318 Meeting House Road, Myersville, MD 21773.

Mr. Denis Goetz

Mr. Dennis M. "Denny" Goetz, 53, of Fairfield, Mont., died Thursday, Oct. 2.

Mrs. Jean Markward

Jean A. Markward, 87, went to Heaven while in the loving care of her family on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

Born July 10, 1921, in Norfolk, Va., she was the daughter of the late Mary Agnes (Millar) and Richard Alexander Ayers. Jean was, for a number of years, an investigator of credit card fraud for the Sears Roebuck Co. She also volunteered at the Shady Grove Hospital in the gift shop.

A loving mother and grandmother, she will be missed by her family, including two daughters, Francie Smaroff and husband, Mike, of Adamstown, and Sandra Gamble of Frederick; a son, Chip Markward and wife Jude of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lauren Smaroff of Adamstown, Matt Blocher of Washington, and David Blocher of Potomac Falls, Va.; she is also survived by several nieces. Jean was preceded in death by a daughter, Pam McDonald and a brother, Richard Ayers.

A memorial service celebrating Jean's life will held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Interment will be private.

Memorials in Jean's name may be sent to Alzheimer's Association, Western Maryland Chapter, 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Gertrude Candela

Mrs. Gertrude Candela, 90, of Frederick, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at home. She was the wife of the late Joseph Candela, who died July 7, 1993.

She was born March 7, 1918, in Port Chester, N.Y., and was the oldest daughter of the late John and Gertrude Delvy. Raised in Rye, N.Y., she graduated from Rye High School and later from Barnard College (Columbia University) in 1940. She also earned a master's degree in education from George Washington University and taught elementary school in Montgomery County.

Gertrude married Joseph March 15, 1942, and worked in Westchester County and New York City while he served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. After the war they moved to Washington where their daughters, Jacqueline and Judy, were born.

They moved to Bethesda in 1953, after their first overseas assignment, with the U.S. State Department in Frankfort, Germany. They also lived in Manila, the Philippines, from 1960-1962 and in Athens, Greece, from 1965-1968.

Gertrude served with the Red Cross at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt and later as a Gray Lady at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. She was a Girl Scout leader in Bethesda and Manila, and the Girl Scout coordinator for Greece and Turkey in Athens. She was a community Bible study group leader in Montgomery for many years. She belonged to the Woman's Club of Chevy Chase, the Barnard Alumnae Association of Washington, AARP in Bethesda and Frederick, the Frederick Woman's Civic Club, New Friends of Frederick, Rainbow Belles and Worman's Mill Bible group.

Gertrude had many varied interests: Bible study; bridge; book club; painting; and quilting. She loved to travel and learn about the history, art and culture of other countries. She traveled with her family during their assignments overseas throughout Europe and the Middle East, including Hong Kong and Japan in the Far East.

After her husband's retirement in 1973, she and Joseph traveled together nationally and internationally, and after her husband's death, she continued traveling with her daughters.

She is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline and Judith, both of Frederick; and her sister, Violet Liberty and her husband, Frank, of Locust Grove, Va.; and 11 nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Marie Carducci.

She will be lovingly remembered by her family and her friends. She was a great teacher, a wonderful friend, a confidant who was always ready to listen, providing love, comfort, support and valuable advice.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville. Father Andy Aaron will officiate. A reception will follow at the church.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gertrude's name to St. Timothy's Catholic Church or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
