Mr. William Ziegler

Mr. William "Kneedeep" Mark Ziegler, 53, of Middletown and formerly of Olney, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Shurleen C. (Carlen) Ziegler.

Born Sept. 22, 1955, in Baltimore, he was a son of the late John and Lillian (Koch) Ziegler.

Mr. Ziegler was a graduate of St. Johns' College High School, Washington, D.C., and was a member of the Junior ROTC. His career was in the IT industry as a computer programer.

In his earlier years, he worked for the National Park Service and was a member of their Living History Program at Great Falls. He liked history and was active in Civil War reenactments.

"Kneedeep" was a self taught musician, enjoying Bluegrass and played with the band Brandystation. Mr. Ziegler dedicated much of his time to service work for Alcoholics Anonymous.

Surviving beside his wife are two daughters, Adrienne Ziegler and Valerie Ziegler; two brothers, James Ziegler and wife, Carolyn, Kurt Ziegler; one sister, Carol Ziegler; and one niece, Jaclyn Ziegler.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. the Rev. Marina Flores will officiate.

Interment will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Parklawn cemetery, Rockville.

Mrs. Jessie Broadhurst

Mrs. Jessie Elizabeth Broadhurst, 94, of Frederick, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at her home. She was the wife of the late Ralph R. Broadhurst.

Born April 29, 1914, in New York, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Emma E. Fuller Wiseman.

Mrs. Broadhurst was a member of Emmanuel Alliance Church. Prior to moving to Frederick, she was a member of Forcey Memorial Church in Silver Spring.

She is survived by her children, Marjorie Amren and husband, Richard, of Frederick, Elaine Shoemaker and husband, Bud, of St. Inigoes, Marian Allen and husband, Ralph, of Martinsburg, W.Va., Richard Broadhurst and wife, Carolyn, of Frederick and Donald Broadhurst and wife, Sue, of Taylors, S.C.; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jeannette Wiseman and a brother, Jack Wiseman.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the funeral home. Pastor Gerald Small will officiate.

Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan, Travis, Timothy and Jace Broadhurst, William Allen Sr., Michael and Daniel Shoemaker.

Contributions may be expressed to the Forcey Memorial Church, 2130 E. Randolph Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904 or the Emmanuel Alliance Church, New Design Road, Frederick, MD 21703.

Mr. Harry Phillips

Harry George Phillips, 74, of Meadow Lane Thurmont, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at his home.

Born June 17, 1934 in Salamanca, N.Y., he was the son of the late Harry C. and Louwella M. (Nitz) Phillips.

He attended school in Ellicottville, N.Y. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was employed by the Fitzgeralds Auto Mall in Frederick. He was a member of Moose Lodge 2025 in Bowie.

He is survived by his companion, Lorrain Shipley of Thurmont; daughter, Patricia Davidson of West Virginia; son, Harry J. Phillips of the Carolinas; sisters, Margaret Razey and Louise Hightenwriter, both of Dayton, N.Y.; brother, Charles (Chuck) Phillips of Thurmont; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son, Patrick Phillips; sister, Janice Libby; and brother, Frederick Phillips.

There will be no viewing.

Services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Of Frederick County, 516 Trail Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.

Arrangements are by J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Mrs. Sophie Sandy

Mrs. Sophie Margaret Sandy, 86, of Bethesda, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Daniel L. Sandy.

She was born in Coral, Pa., July 9, 1922, as a daughter of the late Gasper and Pauline Kaleta Vilchek.

Mrs. Sandy had worked for several years in food service for the Montgomery County Public Schools.

Surviving her are her six children, DeeDee Sandy of Cumby, Texas, Jim Sandy and wife Connie of Lafayette, Ind., John Sandy and wife Shannon of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Joe Sandy and wife Mikie of Chester, Va., Ricky Sandy and wife Terry of Thurmont, and Ray Sandy and wife Terry of Winchester, Ky.; one sister, Pauline Gatskie of Coral, Pa.; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel L. Sandy Jr.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, from St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Emmitsburg. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Mrs. Sarah Brower

Sarah Kate Brower, 84, of Taneytown, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at the Golden Crest Assisted Living in Westminster.

Born March 30, 1924 in Hillsville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Peter L. and Gladys Velma (Kenley) Shockley. She was the wife of the late Paul F. Brower, who predeceased her in 1992.

Sarah was raised in the Emmitsburg area and graduated from the Emmitsburg High School before moving to Taneytown. For a time, she worked in the Borenstein's Sewing Factory in Taneytown.

She was a founder and early vendor with the Westminster Farmers Market. Sarah was a member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau and the Taneytown Planning group of the Farm Bureau for many years, as well as a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Taneytown. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing.

Surviving are a son, Donald E. Brower and wife Lisa of Taneytown; a sister, Bertha Shockley of Emmitsburg; grandsons, Adam and Eric Brower, and several nieces.

She was pre-deceased by a sister, Mary Reaver.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown. Her pastor, Rev. Steven Ostendorf-Snell, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Grace U.C.C. cemetery in Taneytown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and at noon Sunday, until the time of service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made either, Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157, or to Grace United Church of Christ, 49 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD 21787.

Mr. Harry Smith

Mr. Harry Thomas "Doodle" or "Smitty" Smith, 86, of Frederick, died suddenly Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 20, 1922 in Libertytown, he was the son of the late Harry and Mary Catherine Rippeon Smith.

He was the husband of Madeline Morgan Smith, his wife of 59 years. Mr. Smith had been formerly employed as a mechanic, electrician, carpenter and farmer. He enjoyed attending antique tractor shows and the Woodsboro auctions.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Wayne Thomas Smith and wife Kellie of Walkersville; three grandchildren, Jennifer Harris and husband Rhea, Micheal Thomas Smith and Amelia Smith; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jacob and Tyler Harris; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Glenn and Mary Morgan of Frederick; sisters-in-law, "Boots" Smith of West Virginia and Hazel Smith of Union Bridge. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Kenneth Smith.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown. Rev. Dorothy Lundgren, pastor of Chapel Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in Chapel cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home.

Ms. Vicky Lynne Oxenham

Vicky Lynne Oxenham, 56, of Crofton, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, as a result of a long illness. Vicki was born Dec. 3, 1951 and grew up in Horseheads, N.Y., as the daughter of Jean and Kenneth Shull.

She graduated in 1970 from Horseheads High School, then went to Hood College. After graduating in 1974 from Hood, she was employed by NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, where she continued to work until her recent death.

Vicki is survived by her cousin, Tom Shull; family friends, Regina Haase, Carol and David Haase, other friends or co-workers, Linda and Larry Zeigenfuss, Paulette Banks, Sue and Phil Hoge, Pat Rapach, Vicky Gardner, Mary Lou Wadsworth, and Marcie Baer.

She was very active in Hood College Alumni Association and enjoyed gardening, yoga and spending time at her family cottage at Keuka Lake.

An open house will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008, at her home, 1019 Shire Court, Crofton, in celebration of her life. Anyone who knew her is welcome to attend.

Donations in Vicki's honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Lab Rescue of LRCP, or to a shelter for women.

Mr. ManFred Palm

ManFred Max "Fred" Palm, 72, of Sharpsburg, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at his home.

Born March 3, 1936 in Duesseldorf, Germany, he was a son of the late Alfred Magnus and Margarete Ida Baumbach Palm.

Fred had formerly been employed in electric motor maintenance and repair, Rodell Studio, Maryland Public Television and retired from the National Park Service in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

He was a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church Praise Team in Boonsboro.

Fred is survived by his wife, Shirley Joyce Deavers Palm, whom he married Sept. 15, 1956; one son, Jeffrey W. Palm and wife Shari of Keedysville; one daughter, Melissa A. Dougall and husband David of Bloomington, Ill.; one brother, Herbert C. Palm Sr. of Frederick; four grandchildren, Andrea L. Horton and husband Zach of Keedysville, Brad E. Palm of Seattle, Wash., and Kristin N. Dougall and Jessica L. Dougall, both of Bloomington; and two great-grandchildren, Mia G. Horton and Dylan J. Horton.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert G. Brennan Jr. will officiate. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing or visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, building fund, 134 S. Main St., Boonsboro, MD 21713.

Mrs. E. Madeline Moxley

Mrs. E. Madeline Moxley, 96, of Damascus, went to rest on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at the Casey House in Derwood, after spending a day surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the wife of her late husband, Raymond M. Moxley, who died Oct. 1, 1990, after 63 years of marriage.

Madeline was born Jan. 14, 1912 on "The Range" farm in Browningsville. She was the late of 12 children of the late James and Laura Helen Davis Day. Madeline enjoyed recalling childhood memories growing up with her siblings. In recent years, nieces and nephews enjoyed hearing her stories and referred to her at "The Matriarch" of the family.

Raymond and Madeline were married Dec. 25, 1927. In 1931, they purchased Friendship Farm from the late George and John Moxley, were she resided until her death. She enjoyed working on the farm, gardening, working with her flowers and planting wormweed. She enjoyed doing needlework and making crafts. In earlier years, she was active at her church, patting oysters, making apple butter and preparing church dinners.

Madeline was a member of the Montgomery United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of her beloved Heritage Circle and a member of Damascus Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Madeline is survived by her three children, Gloria Warfield and husband, Merhle Warfield Jr., Leonard Moxley and companion JoAnn Norris, Donna Isaacs and husband Skip Isaacs. She also raised a foster daughter, Catherine Farrell Warfield, from the age of 11. She had seven grandchildren, Wayne Warfield and wife Sharon, Curtis Warfield and wife Nancy, Kevin Moxley and wife Diane, Col. Kris Moxley and wife Elizabeth, Kelly Moxley and wife Kathy, Aaron Isaacs and wife Leigh and Chad Isaacs. She leaves 11 great-grandchildren, Curtis Warfield Jr. and fianc?e Melissa, Brandi Warfield, Jason Warfield and fianc?e Suzi, Kristin Warfield, Daniel Moxley, Christopher and Nathaniel Moxley, Kerri and Kelsey Moxley, Logan Howser and Brandon Isaacs.

She will be lovingly remembered by Fredia Moxley and her special neighbors, Jeannie and Harold Mullinix. She will be missed by her weekend caregiver, Megan Durbin of Moutn Airy and her loving and caring "buddy" for almost five years, Brenda Teaford of Roanoke, Va.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Dec. 1, at Montgomery United Methodist Church. Rev. Wade Martin, Rev. Galen Menne and Rev. Bob Braden will officiate. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Honorary bearers are Harold Mullinix and Ray Mullican. Interment will follow at Montgomery United Methodist cemetery, Damascus.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus or Beverly Shipley and Damascus Vol. Fire Dept. Auxiliary, 26334 Ridge Road, Damascus.

Arrangements are by Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, Damascus.

Mr. Vernon Stup

Mr. Vernon Eugene Stup, 86, well-known farm equipment and machinery dealer of Frederick, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Joyce D. Martin Stup, who were married March 30, 1951.

He was born in Frederick County on Dec. 11, 1921, as the son of the late Archie Franklin and Ruth Ellen (Clay) Stup. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member and officer of the men's club of the church. He was also a member of the B.P.O. Elks No. 684, Frederick; formerly served on the advisory board of the Thurmont Bank; and was a member of the A.F. and A.M. Philanthropic Lodge, New Market.

Mr. Stup attended Washington Street and Church Street schools and was a 1939 graduate of Frederick High School. In 1947, he established the Vernon E. Stup Company and specialized in hauling lime and fertilizer for the farming community. He would soon begin specializing in agricultural equipment and for many years was the Allis Chalmers franchise dealer. The company has grown to a full service equipment sales and rental facility operating two locations, the original here in Frederick and another outside Winchester, Va., currently also featuring Case Power Equipment.

Mr. Stup was a longtime member and past president of the MAR-DEL-VA Farm Power Equipment Association and served on the J.I. Case Company Dealers Council. He loved to travel and had won many awards for sales and promotion of the companies he represented during the years.

In earlier years, he was an avid photographer; he enjoyed reading and spending time at their home at the river.

Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a daughter, Suzanne J. Stup; and a son, Dwayne V. Stup and wife, Cheryl, all of Frederick; three grandchildren, Amanda Hill and husband, Craig, of Frederick, Sarah Stup, of Litchfield, Ill., and Bryan Stup, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two great-granddaughters, Adrianna and Mia Hill, of Frederick; three sisters, Blanche Hargett, of Frederick, Grace Garver, of Union Bridge, and Virginia McClain, of New Market; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Stup, and one sister, Mildred Harris.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, one hour prior to funeral services at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Etchison Memorial Chapel, Frederick. Pastor W. Phillip Fogarty and Pastor Albert K. Lane III will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in his name to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1332 N. Halsted St., Suite 201, Chicago, Ill. 60642 or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
