Mr. Lewis Brandon

Mr. Lewis Lee Brandon, 81, of Frederick, died Thursday, Nov. 27, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth Willis Brandon, his wife of 58 years.

Born Oct. 6, 1927, in Illinois, as a son of the late Mac and Mildred Mahnke Brandon Aleksich.

He was born and raised in the Steger/Chicago Heights, Illinois area, then he moved to Frederick in 1950. His career was in government, civil and military service: Navy Dept., Washington, 1945 to 1951; Army, Fort Detrick, 1951 to 1956; retired from U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant in 1976 with 30 years active duty and reserve; postal service 1978 to 1990. He specialized in manpower management and accounting in his Air Force years and was stationed at Andrews AFB; Anchorage, Alaska; Orlando, Fla.; Tan Son Nhut, Republic of Vietnam; Hawaii; and final tour at the Pentagon.

Surviving, besides his wife is a son, Mark W. Brandon, and a daughter, Laura L. Brandon, all at home. He was preceded in death by a brother, Allan, and two sisters, Joan and Violet.

There will be no visiting or calling at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St.

Services and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Brandon's name to the Jeanne Bussard Center, 555 S. Market St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Penny Nuice

Penny I. Nuice, 63, of Sandy Hook, passed away Nov. 26, 2008, at Washington Hospital Center.

She was born Aug. 17, 1945, in Luray, Va., and was the daughter of the late Marvin Isaac Bartlett and Gaynelle Kibler Carroll Bartlett.

She was a member of the Sandy Hook United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Sue Hoffmaster and husband, David D., of Sharpsburg; two sons, Mervin "Frank" Nuice and wife, Myra S., of Boonsboro, and Wesley Thomas Nuice and wife, Faith L., of Gaithersburg; two sisters, Yvonne Mentzer of Knoxville and Tyrina "Silky" Kenney of Harpers Ferry; one brother, Mervin M. Bartlett of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry "Yock" Nuice, and sister, Carol Ann Longerbeam.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the Eackles-Spencer and Norton Funeral Home, Charles Town and Harpers Ferry, W.Va. Rev. Douglas Fraim will officiate.

Interment will be in Brownsville Heights cemetery at Brownsville.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Skeeter Miller, Jamie Sines, Jerry Poston, William Denny, Tony Johnson and Michael Salatto.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family c/o Mervin Nuice, 221 N. Main St., Boonsboro, MD 21713.

Mr. Allen Knott

Allen Raymond Knott, 84, of Emmitsburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at the Green Acres-Adams County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gettysburg, Pa., following a brief illness.

Born Nov. 9, 1924, in Rocky Ridge, he was the son of the late Austin J. and Nora (Harbaugh) Knott. He was predeceased by his first wife of 58 years, Florence M. (Krietz) Knott. He is survived by his current wife of five years, Elizabeth Enright.

Allen was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was inducted into the 303rd Air Service Group on March 17, 1943, and served as a medical corpsman, where he earned the rank of corporal and was awarded five medals.

He was discharged from active duty on Nov. 24, 1945. He continued his working career with the U.S. military at the Department of Defense as a laboratory technician at Fort Detrick, Frederick, until his retirement. He then worked part time at Mount St. Mary's University and St. Anthony's cemetery. Allen was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Emmitsburg, Emmitsburg Memorial V.F.W. Post 6658, the American Legion Francis X. Elder Post 121, and the senior center in Emmitsburg.

He enjoyed hunting, gardening, bowling and playing cards.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughters, Joyce Orndorff and husband, Paul, of Rocky Ridge, Mary Topper and husband, Jack, of Emmitsburg, and Gloria Blackburn and husband, James, of Lake Mary, Fla.; grandchildren, Jean Marie Joy and husband, Barry, of Emmitsburg, Jeffrey D. Topper and wife, Theresa, of Emmitsburg, Doug Orndorff of Fairfield, Pa., Sandy Umbel and husband, Chad, of Emmitsburg, Mark Topper and wife, Sherry, of Rocky Ridge and Richard Brashears and wife, Lori, of Lake Mary, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Erica and Ian Orndorff, Zachary, Jay, Brian, Courtney and Melanie Topper, Justin, Benjamin and Stephanie Andrew, Kayla Umbel, Rylyn, Luke, Sophie and Wade Brashears; siblings, Joseph Knott of Hagerstown, Corrine Woods of Thurmont, and Nora Hilton of Thurmont; stepchildren, Jim Enright of Tenn., Joe Enright of Cumberland, John Enright of Leesburg, Va., and Mary Enright of Mount Airy.

He was predeceased by siblings, Regina Sweeney and Clarence Knott.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg. Rev. Vincent O'Malley, C.M. will serve as celebrant.

Interment with military honors will follow in St. Anthony's Shrine cemetery in Emmitsburg. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8219 Town Center Dr., P.O. Box 43025, Baltimore, MD 21236.

Mr. Miles Clemons

Mr. Miles C. Clemons, 69, of Mount Airy, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore. He was the husband of Janice M. Clemons.

Mr. Clemons was born July 2, 1939, in Montgomery County. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Eunice Lantz Clemons.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughters, Sherri Shaw, Wendy Friend and her husband, Richard, all of Middletown; brothers, Daniel of Silver Spring, Alvin of Damascus, and Thomas of Florida; sisters, Deloris Douglas of West Virginia, and Judi Girr of North Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Prospect United Methodist Church, 5923 Woodville Road, Mount Airy. Rev. Vicki Curry will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church, 5923 Woodville Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771 or to the University of Maryland Medical Center (BMT Unit), P.O. Box 64573, Baltimore, MD 21264.

Mrs. Louisa Batman

Louisa Satchwell Batman, 75, of Williamsburg, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at her home.

A Roanoke, Va., native, Dr. Batman graduated from Roanoke College in 1954 before attending the Medical College of Virginia and graduating in 1958 as an obstetrician/gynecologist. She has lived in Richmond, Va., Boonsboro, Damascus, Newark, Del., and finally retiring to Williamsburg in 1998. She was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, the American College of OB/GYN, American Medical Association, and the Delaware Medical Society. She was a talented quilter and member of many quilting and appliqu? groups.

She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Richard; her children, Stephen B. Batman, David R. Batman, and Anne Batman Holder; three sisters, Edith S. Bonfanti, Shirley S. Keiper, and Susan Satchwell; a brother, Charles Satchwell; grandchildren, Kathleen Batman, Owen Batman, Connor Batman, Isabelle Holder and Jackson Holder.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, in the St. Stephen Lutheran Church. Pastor Andy Ballentine will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Luray, Va. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd, Suite A-102, Newport News, VA 23606.

Arrangements are by Bucktrout Funeral Home.

Mr. William Ellsworth

William Martin Ellsworth, 87, engineer and innovator in the field of modern naval ships and crafts, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, in Adamstown.

Born on Nov. 5, 1921, he was the son of the late William Martin Ellsworth Sr., and Anna (Buck) Ellsworth. He was the loving husband of the late Annette (Degnan) Ellsworth, who passed away on March 8, 2007.

Mr. Ellsworth was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. and moved with his family to Washington, D.C. in 1932. He was a resident of Bethesda for more than 50 years. Mr. Ellsworth served in the army for four years during World War II, where he fought on the European front, including the Battle of the Bulge and achieved the rank of second lieutenant.

After the war, Mr. Ellsworth attended the State University of Iowa on the G.I. Bill and received a bachelor's and master's degree in engineering, majoring in fluid mechanics. While an instructor at Iowa, he met Annette Degnan who became his wife of 60 years.

Upon graduation in 1948, Mr. Ellsworth joined the staff of the David Taylor Model Basin in Carderock, Md. He held various positions in the hydromechanics laboratory, advancing to technical manager of the Hydrofoil Development Program Office, and eventually associate technical director for systems development and head of the systems development department.

Recognizing the need for a more formal organization to test, evaluate and develop military hydrofoils, Mr. Ellsworth conceived the Hydrofoil Special Trials Unit which was established at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. This establishment formed the basis for the technical and operational development of the U.S. Navy's hydrofoils.

Mr. Ellsworth retired from the government in 1983 and subsequently worked as a consultant in naval engineering and vice president of Engineering and Science Associates, Inc. Mr. Ellsworth was a licensed professional engineer, an honorary life member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a charter member of the North American Section of the International Hydrofoil Society.

He was also the author of numerous publications in the field of naval engineering, including the book Twenty Foilborne Years. Mr. Ellsworth was awarded the ASNE Gold Medal in 1973 and was the recipient of the Distinguished Civilian Service Award, Presidential Meritorious Rank, and the David Taylor Award for Scientific Achievement.

Mr. Ellsworth is survived by his daughter, Joan McConville and husband Sean of Damascus; and two sons, Michael William Ellsworth and wife Patricia of Germantown and Peter Joseph Ellsworth and wife Kathleen of Washington, D.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church on Carrollton Manor, 5843 Manor Woods Road, Frederick, MD 21703. A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 am. at the church. Father Lawrence K. Frazier will officiate.

Interment will follow at All Soul's cemetery in Germantown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the loving memory of Mr. Ellsworth's wife Annette to the American Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 60 Bay St., Suite 401, Staten Island, NY 10301.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. Vernon Stup

Mr. Vernon Eugene Stup, 86, well-known farm equipment and machinery dealer of Frederick, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Joyce D. Martin Stup, who were married March 30, 1951.

Born in Frederick County on Dec. 11, 1921, as the son of the late Archie Franklin and Ruth Ellen (Clay) Stup. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member and officer of the men's club of the church. He was also a member of the B.P.O. Elks No. 684, Frederick; formerly served on the advisory board of the Thurmont Bank; and was a member of the A.F. and A.M. Philanthropic Lodge, New Market.

Mr. Stup attended Washington Street and Church Street schools and was a 1939 graduate of Frederick High School. In 1947, he established the Vernon E. Stup Company and specialized in hauling lime and fertilizer for the farming community. He would soon begin specializing in agricultural equipment and for many years was the Allis Chalmers franchise dealer. The company has grown to a full service equipment sales and rental facility operating two locations, the original here in Frederick and another outside Winchester, Va., currently also featuring Case Power Equipment.

Mr. Stup was a longtime member and past president of the MAR-DEL-VA Farm Power Equipment Association and served on the J.I. Case Company Dealers Council. He loved to travel and had won many awards for sales and promotion of the companies he represented during the years.

In earlier years, he was an avid photographer; he enjoyed reading and spending time at their home at the river.

Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a daughter Suzanne J. Stup; and a son, Dwayne V. Stup and wife, Cheryl, all of Frederick; three grandchildren Amanda Hill and husband, Craig, of Frederick, Sarah Stup, of Litchfield, Ill. and Bryan Stup, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two great-granddaughters Adrianna and Mia Hill, of Frederick; three sisters, Blanche Hargett, of Frederick, Grace Garver, of Union Bridge and Virginia McClain, of New Market and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Stup and one sister, Mildred Harris.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Etchison Memorial Chapel, Frederick. Pastor W. Phillip Fogarty and Pastor Albert K. Lane III will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in his name to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1332 N. Halsted St., Suite 201, Chicago, Illinois 60642 or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Mrs. Madelin Harbert

Mrs. Madelin Mae (Knaupp) Bowen Harbert, of Frederick and formerly of Laurel, passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick, at the age of 98. She was born on May 25, 1910, in Troy, N.Y., to the late John Frederick and Henrietta Louisa (Salisbury) Knaupp.

Madelin was married to Thomas B. Bowen Sr. for 33 years, until his death in 1964. She was employed by Grady Management as a property manager for more than 20 years. Upon her retirement in 1973, she married Ross B. Harbert and they spent five years together until his death in 1978.

Madelin was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Laurel and served on the Altar Guild for more than 20 years. She often attended meetings of the Laurel Senior Friendship Club while residing in Laurel. In 2000, she moved to Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick, and was among the first to take up residence.

Madelin was a faithful woman, who enjoyed studying the Bible. She also enjoyed traveling, painting with watercolors and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas B. Bowen Jr. and his wife, Ginny, of Frederick, and William E. Bowen Sr. also of Frederick; five grandchildren, William E. Bowen Jr. of Annapolis, Katherine Bowen Mangum of York, Pa., Robert D. Bowen and wife, Missy, of York, Pa., Sandra Bowen Abernathy of Crofton, and Deborah Bowen Ford and husband, Aaron, of Frederick; nine great-grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley Mangum, Alexis and Carly Bowen, Grant and Drew Abernathy, Christianna Sanbower and husband, Jamie, Corey Valdivia and Abby Ford; one great-great-grandchild, Cayden Sanbower; and a daughter-in-law, Jean Bowen. Madelin was preceded in death by her brother, John Frederick Knaupp Jr. and sister, Marion Knaupp Willetts.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Margaretta Slayman Chapel at Homewood at Crumland Farms, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Philip's Episcopal Church Altar Guild Fund, Sixth and Main streets, Laurel, MD 20707.

Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Cremation and Funeral Care, P.A., Annapolis.

Mr. William Welch

Military services were held Thursday, Nov. 13, at the National cemetery in Baltimore for Mr. William Rayen Welch who died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, at the Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center in Frederick.

Born in 1909, in Orenco, Oregon, he was the third of seven children born to John Rayen Welch and Emilie Rose Fingado Welch. His father was a Presbyterian minister. The family moved back east to Dansville, N.Y., in the 1920s. Bill was a graduate of Alfred College in New York. He worked at various jobs during the Depression but was most proud of traveling around the southwest with Ed Plunket's (one elephant) Circus. He played trombone in the band.

During World War II, he proudly served in the Merchant Marines. After the war, he settled in Los Angeles, Calif. While teaching school at Garvy, he met and married a fellow teacher, Mable McBee, from Dorchester, Texas. They had three children together. He became employed as a Los Angeles County probation officer in the 1950s, retiring in the 1970s. He always said he liked his job and was admired as one of the best in the department. He was president of the Probation Officers Union in the early 1960s. He spent some very enjoyable years in Tuscon and Mt. Lemon, Ariz., after retiring. He later moved to Maryland to be near his children and grandchildren.

Surviving from his immediate family is Maurice (Pete) Welch and wife, Bette, of Brockport, N.Y.; former wife, Mable Wedberg, of Rockville; daughter, Deborah Bryant, of Frederick; son, Thomas Welch, of Washington; daughter, Susan Schwarz, of Bethesda; grandchildren, Maggie (Sibert) Snowberger, of Hagerstown, and Michael Schwarz, of Salisbury; also many nieces and nephews including Katherine Lanier and friend, Judi Ford, of Syracuse, N.Y., Emilie Welch of Ulm, Mont., and Julie Welch of Seattle, Wash., who enjoyed corresponding with him, and many more.

He was a favorite uncle, and the best dad and grandpa in the whole world. We love him and miss him very much.

Mrs. Mary Harrison

Mrs. Mary Gross Harrison, 93, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Homewood at Crumland Farms. She was the wife of the late Thomas Woodrow Harrison, who died in January 1985.

Born Oct. 29, 1915, in Jefferson, she was a daughter of the late Leslie G. and Elsie G. Heffner Gross.

Mrs. Harrison was a homemaker for most of her life. She enjoyed baking, canning, crocheting and working in her garden. She was a member of the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ and a former member of the Pleasant Hill Reformed Church in Yellow Springs.

Surviving is one brother, Meredith Gross, of Taneytown; as well as nieces, nephews and her devoted friends from 12th Street. Additionally, she will be fondly remembered and missed by her faithful niece, Mary Louise Krepps and husband, Gil; and devoted friends, Tom Disque and wife, Robin, and their son, Andy.

Mrs. Harrison was preceded in death by seven brothers, Austin, Elwood, Wilbur, Guy, Walter, Carroll and Donald Gross; and eight sisters, Helen Lightner, Evelyn Pickett, Betty Royer, Dorothy Wentzel, Margaret Malone, Doris Gross, Mildred Virts and Katherine Kramer.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Barbara Kershner Daniel, pastor of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, will officiate. Interment will be in the Reformed cemetery, Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 W. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.
