Mr. Kelly Clapsaddle

Mr. Kelly Steven Clapsaddle, 41, of Union Bridge, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. Born May 1, 1967, in Westminster, he was the son of Bonnie Broadwater Clapsaddle of Union Bridge and the late Steven K. Clapsaddle. Mr. Clapsaddle was a 1985 graduate of Linganore High School. He enjoyed car restoration, especially his Mustangs, fishing, woodcrafting, playing games with his niece Emily, competing in drag races at 75/80 Dragway and the family dog, Jake.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother, C. Scott Clapsaddle and companion, Michelle Druin, of Union Bridge; paternal grandmother, Daris V. Kelly Clapsaddle, of Westminster; uncles and aunts, Michael and Brenda Clapsaddle, of Taneytown; Burnie and Sandy Broadwater, of Union Bridge; niece, Emily T. Clapsaddle, of Littlestown, Pa.; and cousins, Chris Kelly and Robert Selby and family. He will be fondly remembered by Robert Handley, Connie Jones and Kristy L. Wingate.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Uniontown. There will be no visitation nor funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland, 1107 Kenilworth Drive, Suite 202, Baltimore, MD 21204-2136.

Mr. Edgar Cook

Mr. Edgar Grant Cook, 85, of Frederick, passed away Nov. 23, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Miriam S. Cook, his wife of 62 years.

Born June 15, 1923, in Circleville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Frank M. and Olivia B. Cook. Mr. Cook served in the South Pacific during World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard, aboard LST 765. Ed worked as a mechanic for Chevy Chase Chevrolet for 45 years, until his retirement. He loved NASCAR, country music, and the Washington Redskins, and he was an avid Chesapeake Bay fisherman.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Cook is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Pearce and husband, Bill, of Richmond, Va. and Cindi Wirick and husband, George, of Walkersville; two sisters, Ruby Phares and husband, Robert, and Jane Cook; four brothers, Raymond Cook, Morris Cook and wife, Jean, Richard Cook and Charles Cook; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Cook and Charles McDonald.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Walkersville United Methodist Church, 22 Main St., Walkersville. Committal services will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Cook's name may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Ms. Vicky Oxenham

Vicky Lynne Oxenham, 56, of Crofton, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, as a result of a long illness. Vicki was born Dec. 3, 1951, and grew up in Horseheads, N.Y., as the daughter of Jean and Kenneth Shull.

She graduated in 1970 from Horseheads High School, then went to Hood College. After graduating in 1974 from Hood, she was employed by NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, where she continued to work until her recent death.

Vicki is survived by her cousin, Tom Shull; family friends, Regina Haase, Carol and David Haase, other friends or co-workers, Linda and Larry Zeigenfuss, Paulette Banks, Sue and Phil Hoge, Pat Rapach, Vicky Gardner, Mary Lou Wadsworth, and Marcie Baer.

She was very active in Hood College Alumni Association and enjoyed gardening, yoga and spending time at her family cottage at Keuka Lake.

An open house will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008, at her home, 1019 Shire Court, Crofton, in celebration of her life. Anyone who knew her is welcome to attend.

Donations in Vicki's honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Lab Rescue of LRCP, or to a shelter for women.

Mrs. Beverly Zienda

Mrs. Beverly Zienda, 68, of Thurmont, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center, Emmitsburg, surrounded by her loving family. She died following a hard-fought 14-year battle with cancer.

She was born Sept. 10, 1940 in Lebanon, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Claude and Rachael Cox May.

She graduated in 1958 from Lebanon High School. Following school, she was employed by the government at Olmstead Air Force Base in Middletown, Pa. and at the Valley Forge Army Hospital.

She was married June 13, 1964, to Alphonse A. Zienda of Thurmont, and was welcomed into the Zienda family with open arms, all of whom she loved immensely.

She was a lifelong seamstress and was involved in many local craft shows during the past 30 years.

For the past 29 years, she served as president of the Catoctin Colorfest in Thurmont. Her efforts and dedication to this festival have produced a positive impact on numerous individuals and organizations. She also was an avid bowler.

She was a member of the Thurmont Amvets Auxiliary and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish. In 2005, she received the Baltimore Archdioceses Medal of Honor for her volunteer work in the church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by their son, Mark Zienda, of Thurmont.

She will be remembered by many friends too numerous to mention, including lifelong friend, Judy Long.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont.

The rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Zienda will repose from 8:45 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at St. Anthony's Shrine Parish, 16150 St. Anthony Road, Emmitsburg. A mass of Christian burial will follow and the Rev. Dr. David W. Shaum will serve as celebrant. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel cemetery, Thurmont.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Thurmont Ambulance Company, 27 N. Church St., Thurmont, MD 21788 or to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, 18 Altamont Avenue, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mrs. Judith Underwood

Mrs. Judith "Judy" K. Underwood, 62, of Frederick, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Georgetown University Hospital. She was the wife of Larry Underwood.

Born Aug. 26, 1946 in Port Huron, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Hazel Langolf.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her son, Scott Underwood and father-in-law, James A. Underwood of Frederick.

Judy enjoyed making crafts, cooking and spending time with her family. She was employed at the Golden Coral for many years.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel. Rev. Tim May will officiate.

Contributions may be expressed to the American Liver Foundation, 95 Maiden Lane, Suite 603, New York, NY 10038.

Mr. Edward Beckett Sr.

Edward Lee "Sonny" Beckett Sr., 68, of Golden Living Center Frederick, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 10, 1940 in Ellicott City, he was the son of the late George Edward and Louise S. (Johnson) Beckett.

He attended Clarksville High School; was employed by Halley Construction for 23 years retiring in 1995; and was a member of the Frederick VFW post 3285, Frederick moose Lodge 371, Frederick Eagles Aerie 1067 and Redman Club of Frederick.

Beckett is survived by daughter, Shelly Lynn Beckett Burke of Smithsburg; son, Edward Lee Beckett Jr. of Buckeystown; sister, Sandra E. Lindsay of Falling Waters, W.Va.; brother, George A. Beckett and wife Charleen of Mount Airy; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four nieces; two nephews and special friends, Helga Fox and Regina Roberts.

There will be no viewing.

Services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 800 Wyman Park Dr., Suite 110, Baltimore, MD 21211.

Arrangements are by J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Mrs. Iva Johnson

Iva Lee Johnson, 83, of Frederick, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, among family in Rohrersville.

She was born Dec. 20, 1924, at Charles Town, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late John H. Foster and Beatrice M. Snapp Foster.

She was the wife of Jacob M. Johnson Jr. who passed away Nov. 26, 2007. They were married 64 years.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Buckeystown United Methodist Church (Route 85), Buckeystown. She was a homemaker and loved helping and being with her family and friends. She volunteered with Frederick Memorial Hospital at the information desk and was a member of the auxiliary for 25 years. She was also a life member in the Auxiliary of the Carroll Manor Fire Company in Adamstown.

She is survived by one son, Jacob "Jakie" Middleton Johnson III and wife Catherine of Thurmont; one daughter, Phyllis Lee Baker and husband David of Rohrersville; two sisters, Evelyn Alger of Boonsboro, and Meta Foster and husband Robert of Martinsburg, W.Va.; grandchildren, Kimberly Reed and husband Alan of Braddock Heights, Jacob "Jay" Johnson IV and wife Laura of Keymar, Paul Houck Jr. and wife Heather of Jefferson, Patricia Shoemaker and husband James "BJ" of Rohrersville, Mark, Dawn, and Erick Baker of Frederick; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Alason, and Arianna Reed, Justina Johnson, Anthony Harrison, Robert Poleto, Camden and Carson Houck and Jamie Shoemaker; and a number of nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered by Melody Castle and her children, Todd, Jenna, and Ryan of Sykesville.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by an infant son; two brothers, Hesbia C. Foster and Clyde W. Foster.

Her family expresses their gratitude to her doctors and Hospice of Washington County.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. and family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Linda W. Healy, pastor of Buckeystown United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Interment will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery. Bearers will be Jacob "Jay" Johnson IV, Paul Houck Jr., Mark Baker, Erick Baker, Alan Reed, and James "BJ" Shoemaker Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Buckeystown United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 399, Buckeystown, MD 21717.

Mrs. Mary Goodwin

Mary Avlynne Goodwin, of Silver Spring, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

She was the beloved wife of the late Francis L. Goodwin Jr.; devoted mother of Linda (Alan) Einsenstadt; sister of Nancy (Robert) Maloney; aunt of Brian Maloney, Lynn Cerasoli and Jennifer Allen.

Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Inter-Faith Chapel, 3680 S. Leisure World Blvd., Silver Spring and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd., West, Silver Spring.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Colesville Road and Highland Drive, Silver Spring.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, 2626 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20037 or to St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Mrs. Floretta Cook

Floretta M. Cook, 80, of Frederick, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at the Kline Hospice House of Mount Airy. She was the widow of the late Wilbur F. Cook, who died in 1990.

Born June 22, 1928 in Frederick. She was the daughter of the late Grayson M. and Mary Lee Johnson Miss.

Mrs. Cook was a lifetime resident of Frederick and was employed with Sagners Incorporated and Litton Bionetics of Fort Detrick. She was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose # 371 of Frederick, a former member of the AM Vets Post 2 of Frederick and a former member of the American Legion Francis Scott Key Post 11 of Frederick. Mrs. Cook enjoyed hobbies and her collections, she was an avid reader and valued her special times spent with her family.

Mrs. Cook was survived by her son, Richard F. Cook of Frederick; her daughter-in-law, Beverly Cook; her grandchildren, James and Jessica Cook; her great-grandchildren, Cyrus, Drexel, Ava and Remy; her brother, Timothy M. Miss; her sister, Lorraine Ramsburg; her nieces, Shari Seek and husband Kevin and Amanda Seek; and her nephew, Michael Perkins. She was additionally survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Miss and Barbara Frye and her brothers, Martin, Charles and William Miss.

The family will received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. from the funeral home. Rev. Marina C. Flores will officiate. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
