October 9, 1999

On October 9, 1999 Janet Sue Neithercott of Stevensville, MD. died at her home in Stevensville, MD.She was 49.

Born in Baltimore on March 16, 1950 the daughter of John A. and the late Dixie Williamson Hockman.She graduated from Patapsco High School in Dundalk and then attended Essex Community College. On July 23, 1972 she married Robert W. Neithercott Jr. of West Chester, PA.Mrs. Neithercott worked as a floor manager for Hutzlers Department Store in Baltimore. She raised her family in the Gardenville area of the city and moved to Stevensville in 1991.

Mrs. Neithercott was a member of the Safe Harbor Presbyterian Church of Stevensville and the Walkersville Christian Family School of Thurmont.

In addition to her husband and father, Mrs. Neithercott is survived by two sons, R. Matthew Neithercott and Brandon M. Neithercott, both of Stevensville; one daughter, Jennifer L. Neithercott of Stevensville; one brother, John Hockman of Edgewood; and one sister, Ruth Ann Maier of Baltimore.

Funeral Service will be held onWednesday October 13,1999 at the Island Alliance Church in Stevensville, MD. Interment will follow in Stevensville cemetery.Family and friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. on Tuesday October 12, 1999 from 7pm to 9pm.The family request that memorial contributions be made to Walkersville Christian Family Schools 4 west Main Stret Thurmont, MD. 21788-1824 or Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Ave. Queenstown, MD. 21658.

October 7, 1999

Samuel Percy Thomas of Baltimore, MD died Thursday, October 7, 1999 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.He was 61.

Born on April 2, 1938 in Stevensville, MD, he was the son of the late Ira R. and Anna M. Roe Thomas.He attended Chester Wye Institute in Grasonville and later attended Barc School in Baltimore, where he participated in daily work assignments.

Mr. Thomas is survived by one sister, Catherine Sparks, of Greensboro, MD and many nieces and nephews.He is predeceased by three brothers:John Ira Thomas, William Thomas and Charles Thomas; and four sisters: Mary Thomas, Betty Callahan, Florence Russ, and Deborah Kelly.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 11, 1999 at Stevensville cemetery in Stevensville, MD.Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD.

October 6, 1999

Charotte T. Hampshire of Easton died at her home on Wednesday, October 6, 1999. She was 77.

Born in Baltimore, MD on May 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Marie Luers Allen. After attending public school she worked as a domestic and as a patient sitter until retiring in the early 1980's. Prior to moving to Easton in 1992 she had lived in Baton Rouge, LA since the late 1980's. She was a resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland for the majority of her life.

She had attended the Calvary United Methodist Church, Queenstown and was very active at the Talbot Senior Center, Easton.

Her husband, Douglas "Happy" Gernert died in 1971 and her next husband, Walter Hampshire died in 1991.

Mrs. Hampshire is survived by a brother, William Allen, Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA. A sister, Marie, is deceased.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 9, 1999 at 11:00 Am at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home Easton where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Senior Center,400 Brookletts Avenue, Easton, MD 21601.

October 4, 1999

Raymond Joseph Kroeger of St. Michaels died on Monday, October 4, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Easton. He was 78.

Born in Milwaukee, WI, on February 15, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph and Antoinette Buxbaum Kroeger. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 as a Naval Aviation Cadet. He was commissioned in 1943 and served as a Naval Aviator until his release from active duty in 1945. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1964 as a Lieutenant Commander.

He graduated from Ohio State University and then earned his Masters Degree in Business from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH. He retired in 1983 after 35 years as a U.S. Steel salesman. Prior to moving to St. Michaels in July 1985 he had lived for 17 years in Hudson, OH. His first wife, the former Shirley Woodward, whom he married August 27, 1949, died in December 1968.

He was a member of First Congregational Church of Hudson, OH, the U. S. Navy League, Talbot Country Club and was the current MISGA District One Director. He had served as the President of the Quail Hollow Condominium Association, the President of the Board of Martingham Utilities and a Board Member of the Martingham Property Owners Association.

Mr. Kroeger is survived by his wife, the former Peggy King Jones whom he married April 14, 1973; three sons, Steven R. Kroeger of Raleigh, NC, Bruce W. Kroeger of Columbus, OH, and Bradley J. Kroeger of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Connie Sue Kroeger of Maiden, NC; a step-son, Stephen K. Jones of Jacksonville, FL; a brother, William Kroeger of Hartland, WI; a sister, Shirley Lamprecht of New Berlin, WI; three grandsons, 2 step-granddaughters and one step-great-grandson.

Graveside services will be held at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, WI, on Sunday, October 10, 1999, at 1:00 PM.

Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, MD, on Wednesday, October 13, 1999, at 11:00 AM.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Michaels Volunteer Fire Dept., St. Michaels, MD 21663 or the Talbot County Heart Association, c/o Sheila Bateman, 501 Dutchmans Lane, Easton, MD 21601.

October 3, 1999

Daniel James "Jim" Lawler of Easton died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Sunday, October 3, 1999. He was 63.

Born in Baltimore, MD on March 17, 1936, he was the son of Mary Hagan Lawler Meeks of Easton and the late Daniel S. Lawler. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 - 1957.

He was a former member of the Bay County Moose, the American Legion Post, Stevensville and a member of the Easton Moose Lodge #1520 where he was serving as Governor.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Lawler is survived by three daughters, Colleen Parks of Catonsville, Linda Engle of Easton and Bobbi Shorter of Cambridge; 2 grandchildren and a special friend, Florence Cahall of Easton.

Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday, October 7, 1999 at 6:00 PM

Burial will be at New Cathedral cemetery, Baltimore.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Easton Moose Lodge #1520, Easton, MD 21601 or the Easton Volunteer Fire Dept., Creamery Lane, Easton, MD 26101.

October 1, 1999

Mildred Blunt Whaland of Rock Hall, Maryland died on October 1, 1999 at Corsica Hills Nursing Center. She was 87

Born in Centreville, MD on January 17, 1912 the daughter of Joseph and Sadie Blunt. She attended school in Centreville and Baltimore. She married Joseph Lawrence (Lonnie) Whaland of Kent County. Mrs. Whaland raised her family and lived in Rock Hall, MD. Her husband died in 1959. During her career, she worked in a florist shop in Baltimore. Upon moving to Rock Hall, she worked as a nanny for the Guastivano family. Mrs. Whaland was noted in the Rock Hall area for making down pillows and homemade preserves. She was a member of the Rock Hall United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school. Mrs. Whaland worked was a camp counselor at Camp Pecometh near Centreville and as a judge at the voting polls during elections.

Mrs. Whaland is survived by a stepbrother, Daniel Blunt; four grandchildren; Bonnie Whaland Edwards of Centreville, MD, Debbie L. Whaland of Prospect Park, PA, Donald Whaland of Rock Hall, MD and Mary Lou Christian of Chestertown and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Whaland ‘s son, Norman Lawrence Whaland, died in 1990.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 4, 1999 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Rock Hall, Maryland at 2:00p.m.. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, October 3, 1999 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chestertown, Maryland.

November 30, 1999

Mary Ann Lafferty Sanders of Easton died at the Genesis Eldercare-The Pines in Easton on Tuesday, November 30, 1999. She was 98.

Born in Canmer, KY on November 11, 1901, she was the daughter of the late William Alvis and Josephine Davis Lafferty. After graduating as valedictorian of the class from Horse Cave High School in 1918, she went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Berea College in 1922 with a B.A. Degree. She taught high school for three years and then received her Masters in Social Work from Western Reserve University. She did social work in Louisville, KY and Yonkers, NY. She lived in Mt. Vernon and Eastchester, NY for 68 years before moving to Easton in 1999.

Mrs. Sanders was a member of the Reformed Church of Bronxville, NY for over 50 years and a Sunday school teacher for over 20 years. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters and the Eastchester Women’s Club.

Her husband, Vernon T. Sanders, whom she married on September 9, 1930, died in 1968.

Mrs. Sanders is survived by a daughter, Mary-Beth Sanders Goll of Easton; a son, Robert Lafferty Sanders of Pelham, NY; two sisters, Avaleah L. Combs of Van Nuys, CA and Frances L. Falkenstine of Berea, KY; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Four brothers, John H. Lafferty, Edward M. Lafferty, William A. Lafferty, Jr., and Wilburn D. Lafferty are deceased.

Graveside services will be held at the Pearl Webb cemetery in Canmer, KY, on Friday, December 3, 1999 at 2:00 PM.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Wednesday, December 1, 1999 from 4:00-5:00 PM.

Anna C. Wysocki Kratfel of Chestertown, Md. formerly of Baltimore, Md. died on November 30, 1999 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation center. She was 86.

She was born on January 31, 1913, the daughter of the late Adam A. and Josephine G. Augustyniak Wysocki. In 1932 she married Frank John Kratfel, they made their home in Baltimore, Md. where Mrs. Kratfel was a homemaker. In 1970, Mr. Kratfel predeceased his wife and in 1995 she moved to Chestertown, Md.

She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Highlandtown.

She is survived by 2 Sons: Norman Francis Kratfel of Bethlehem, Pa. and Ronald George Kratfel of Chestertown, Md.; a daughter: Joanne McQuigg of Annapolis, Md.; One sister: Eleanor Wlodarski of Baltimore, Md. along with eight grandchildren: Kimberly, Robert, Jennifer, Michael, Sandra, Kristin, Jeffrey, and Michael, and 5 great grandchildren: Tegan, Martin, Christinia, Mikayla, and Natalie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday December 3, 1999 at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Baltimore, Md. Relatives and friends may call at Lilly and Zeiler Funeral Home 700 S. Conkling St. Baltimore, Md. from 2:00 – 4:00 and from 7:00- 9:00 PM a Christian wake will be held at 7:30pm. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus cemetery in Baltimore, Md. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association 711 Washington Ave. #29-174 Chestertown, Md. 21620.

Richard W. Lednum, Sr., a lifelong resident of Tilghman died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Tuesday, November 30, 1999. He was 82.

Born in Tilghman, MD on June 20, 1917, he was the son of the late Edgar Daniel and Mary Alice Ferguson Lednum. He attended public school in Talbot County and on June 24, 1939 married Mary Emily Cooper. They made their home in Tilghman. Mrs. Lednum died August 1996.

He was a former member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Tilghman and a past member of the Tilghman Volunteer Fire Department. He is a member of the Maryland Waterman's Association.

Mr. Lednum is survived by two sons, Richard W. Lednum, Jr. of Tilghman and Charles Lednum of Hurlock; three daughters, Florence M. Gowe and Charlotte L. Covington, both of Tilghman and Mary Kelly of Vineland, NJ; two brothers, Marion Lednum of Claiborne and Vernon Lednum of McDaniel; two sisters, Estelle Harrison of St. Michaels and Isabel Kleine of West Virginia; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by four brothers, Matthew Lednum, Herman Lednum, Guy Lednum and Taylor Lednum.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Friday, December 3, 1999 at 2:00 PM.

Burial will be at Tilghman Wesleyan cemetery, Tilghman, MD.

Friends may call on Thursday evening from 7-9 PM and one hour prior to the service.
