February 2, 2001

William P. Carter Jr. of Atlantic Beach Florida died Friday, February 2, 2001 at the Baptist Beach Medical Center. He was 82.

Mr. Carter was born in Nutley, NJ the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. William Carter. Mr. Carter attended the University of Virginia and then the University of Maryland Dental School. From there he went on to the University of Montreal for Orthodontistry. He was married to Margaret Ford Carter for 54 years.

Some of his most passionate interests included golf and sailing. William Carter was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Ford Carter in 1997. He is survived by 2 sons, William Page Carter III of Lutherville, Md. and Richard Ford Carter of Atlantic Beach, Fl.and 2 grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at 1:00 pm from Shrewsbury Episcopal Church in Kennedyville, Md. Friends and family may call from 11:00am to 12:00 pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. 21651. Interment will be at Shrewsbury cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association Eastern Shore Chapter, P.O. Box 2233 Salisbury, Md. 21802-2233. Or any Alzheimer's Association located near you.

Frank Edward Wetzel of Chestertown died on Friday, February 2, 2001 at the Kent-Queen Anne Hospital in Chestertown. He was 80.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on December 20, 1920, he was the son of the late Thomas Andrew and Mabel Shade Wetzel. He spent his formative years in Manoa, PA and, after completing public school at age 17, he attended Haverford School in Haverford, PA. While attending Haverford School and during his years at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance, he crewed on an 8-man shell. He was also an outstanding member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. While in college, he took Civilian Pilot Training and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force.

Following his graduation in 1943, he began active duty with the U.S. Army Air Force serving for three years as a cryptographer with Top Secret clearance in Brazil and the Assention Island. After the war, he married his wife of 45 years, the former Nancy Sheaffer, and then started a long successful career in insurance.

In 1965, he went to work for the American Automobile Association in Washington, D.C. where he reorganized the insurance department and was instrumental in organizing the American Automobile Association Life Insurance Company. After his retirement in 1983, he and his wife moved to Oxford.

While residing in Oxford for 18 years, he was a member of the vestry and past Junior Warden at the Church of the Holy Trinity, a volunteer and past President of the Oxford Museum, and served as a Chairman on the Election Committee for the Town of Oxford. He was also an avid boater who loved to cruise the many tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, T. Andrew Wetzel, II and his wife Janine of Church Hill; a step-daughter, Margaret Ann Shea Hilton and her husband Thomas of Ithaca, NY; a step-son, Charles Robert Shea and his wife Nancy of Colorado Springs, CO; and four grandchildren, Brook, Christopher, Lindsey, and Bobby.

Memorial services will be held at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Oxford on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Inurnment in the church columbarium wall will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Holy Trinity, P.O. Box 387, Oxford, MD 21654.

Roland L. Bennett (Pop) of Dover, DE, formally of Chestertown, MD died on February 1, 2001 at Kent General Hospital, Dover, DE. He was 86 years old.

Born in Broadneck, Kent County, MD, he was the son of the late Leonard F. and Bertha Hynson Bennett. He was the husband of Ethel S. Bennett, whom he married on Dec. 14, 1940. Mr. Bennett drove a transport for D & R Supply Co. for 27 years. Upon his retirement, he returned to his previous occupation, as a commercial waterman until 1990. He was a member of the Maryland Watermans Assoc. and the Kent County Watermans Assoc.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Mr. Bennett is survived by 6 sons; Roland Lee Bennett and his wife Linda of Greensboro, MD, Richard Wayne Bennett and his wife Mary Lee of Chestertown, MD, Michael Brian Bennett of Chestertown, Barry Craig Bennett and his wife Debbie of Chestertown, Leonard "Kerry" Bennett of Leonard Town, MD, Danny Sewell Bennett and his wife Bonnie of Rock Hall, MD, one sister Naomi Davis and her husband Julian of Chestertown and 1 brother Leonard Bennett and his wife Estelle of Chestertown, MD. He also survived by 17 grandchildren; Lori, bonnie Roland, John, Curtis, Dawn, R. Wayne, Robbie, Melissa, Brian, Jody, Bryan Scott, Jenna, Nicholas, Danny and Tobie and 12 great grandchildren; Robbie, Anthony, Levi, Dylan, Roland, Chelsea, Morgan, Travis, Brittney, Ryan, Curtis and Sara. And many special nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland. Friends and relatives may call one hour prior to service (1:00-2:00p.m.). Interment will be at Chester cemetery. Memorial

Clyde Ellingsworth of Millington, Md. died Thursday, February 1, 2001 at the Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, Md. He was 85.

Mr. Ellingsworth was born in Sudlersville, Md. the son of the late Millard and Emma Ellingsworth "Short". He was a graduate of the Sudlersville High School Class of 1934. Six years later he married Margaret Graham and they were married 60 yrs. Together they farmed near Sudlersville, then Locust Grove and then Millington, Md. Mr. Ellingsworth was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Marydel, MD. He was preceded in death by his son David Ellingsworth in 1969.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Ellingsworth of Millington, MD, 2 sons, Benjamin Ellingsworth of Millington, MD. and Clyde Ellingsworth of Millington, MD., 5 daughters, Christina Chance of Salisbury, MD, Mary Ellingsworth of Catonsville, MD, Rebecca Hyla of Glen Burnie, MD, Theresa Rhea of Newark, DE, Monica Simpler of Millington, MD, and 19 grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday, February 5, 2001 at 11:00 am at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Marydel, MD. Friends may call 1 hour prior. Interment will be held at the Sudlersville cemetery following services at the church.

Denise H. Harris of Millington, Md. died on Monday February 1st. 2001 in the Kent & Queen Anne's hospital, Chestertown, Md. of an apparent heart attack. She was 44.

Mrs. Harris was born in Chestertown, Md. the daughter of the late Frank Henry and Ella Yellowdy Henry of Middletown, De. Mrs. Harris was a Department Manager for the Millington Food Rite, in Millington, Md. She was a member of the Graves Chapel UAME Church; Millington, Md. Mrs. Harris served as an usher at the church, and was also a member of the Ladies in White and the Sisterhood Society. She attended the Boulden Institute of Biblical learning and was an Evangelistic Minister. Mrs. Harris enjoyed working with computers and helping others. In her quite time she enjoyed sewing.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Harris is survived by her Husband Rev. Donald F. Harris, 3- Sons Richard Harris of Smyrna, De. Brian Harris of Elkton, Md. and Donald Fredrick Harris of Ewingtown, Md. and 1- daughter, Trina Henry of Wilmington, De. 3- Brothers Frank and Michael Henry both of Cecilton, Md. and Darnell Henry of Millington, Md. and 2- sisters Deborah Queen of Elkton, Md. and Beverly Wilson of New Castle, De.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday February 6th. 2001 at 1pm from the Faith Unity Church, Millington, Md. where friends and family may call after 11 is. Friends and family may also call Monday Evening from 7-9pm in the Fellows Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md.

Edith Mae Marshall, of Easton, died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Thursday, February 1, 2001. She was 79.

Born in Caroline County, May 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Ola Vickery Eaton. She attended public school in Caroline County. Prior to moving to Easton in 1991, she had resided in Greensboro. She had worked in the meat department at Food Fair in Easton and then Pantry Pride in Easton and Dover, Delaware before retiring in the mid-70's. She was a member of FELRA UFCW Union.

Mrs. Marshall is survived by her husband, W. Raymond Marshall whom she married on July 1, 1955; a son, Gilbert M. "Sonny" Passwaters of Macclenny, FL; two step-children, W. Raymond Marshall III of Newcomb and Lynda L. Marshall of Harmony; four sisters, Florence Windsor of Seaford, DE, Catherine Robb of Harrington, DE, Jane Kibler of Denton and Doris Towers of Federalsburg ; a granddaughter, Tammy Wooters of Denton, two great-grandchildren, Charity M. Mullen and Danielle S. Wooters, both of Denton and two great-great grandchildren, Destiny C. Collie and Joshua Lee Mullen.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 5th, at 11 A. M. at the Chapel of the Md Veterans cemetery-Eastern Shore at Hurlock. Burial was in the Md. Veterans cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 209 E. Market St., Salisbury, MD 21801.

Mrs. Florence Della McCraw, 82, of Millington, Maryland, died at University Hospital Medical Center on February 1, 2001

Born in Carroll County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Henry & Haley Spencer. She spent her formative years in Virginia and later moved to Elkton, Maryland with her husband, Rufus M. McCraw. She was a seamstress who was employed by Nanette's in Elkton, where she made children's clothing.

In 1968 she moved to Millington, MD. She went to work for the Dutch Deli where she worked as a waitress for many years. She was a very active member of the Chestertown Baptist Church in Chestertown, MD Mrs. McCraw was very family orientated. She enjoyed being with her husband and relatives. In her spare time she enjoyed listening to country music and reading. Her husband Rufus M. McCraw who died in 1983 precedes her in death.

Surviving her is her son Roger McCraw of Womelsdorf, PA, a brother Clarence Spencer of Laurel Fork, VA, a grandson Brian Bench and his two children, Kelly and Samantha Bench all of Marshall, Missouri.

Funeral Services will be held @ 11:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 7th at the Chestertown Baptist Church. Interment will be in Crumpton cemetery.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday evening, February 6th from 7 - 9 p.m.. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 Cypress St., Millington, MD
