Mr. Matthew Creekmore

Mr. Matthew Stewart Creekmore, 26, of Anaheim, Calif., passed away in his sleep of a seizure Friday, Nov. 21, 2008.

Born June 2, 1982, at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, he was the son of Stephen and Jane Creekmore of Frederick.

Matthew graduated from Gov. Thomas Johnson High School in 2000. He attended the University of Illinois as a math and computer science major and was currently working as a web page developer, his ultimate job.

Matthew loved music and formally began to study piano at the age of five. He played competitively as a child and was selected as a finalist to perform at the Weinberg Center with the Frederick Optimist Club when he was 11 and again when he was 12. He often accompanied his brothers on the violins and his sister on her cello. He later enjoyed music composition, which he added to his web pages.

Matthew had a love of life and people. In addition to his parents, he will be greatly missed by his brother, Robert Creekmore and wife, Julie, and daughter, Laura, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; his sister, Elizabeth Creekmore Wu and husband, Charles, and daughter, Kaili, and son, Nicholas, of Chicago, Ill.; his twin brother, Benjamin Creekmore of Los Angeles, Calif.; his grandmother, Dorothy O'Bryan of Calif.; his grandfather, John Stewart of Texas; and his uncle, Nelson Stewart and wife, June, and daughters, Alison and Amanda of Texas; his uncle, Mark Creekmore and wife, Julie, and son, Peter, of Michigan; and his domestic partner, Brian Rand, of Anaheim, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made in Matthew Creekmore's name to Abilities Network/Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region, 8503 La Salle Road, Towson, MD 21286.

Mrs. Anne Morrissey

Mrs. Anne Mae "Nanny" Morrissey, 104, of Libertytown, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Kline Hospice House near New Market. Born May 13, 1904, in Northern Ireland, she was the eighth of eleven children of the late David and Mary Tomlinson Collins. In 1922, at the age of 18, she came to America and resided with her sisters, who had previously come to Philadelphia. There she met and married Benjamin Joseph Morrissey in 1926. In 1936 they moved to a family farm near Libertytown, and in 1940 into town, living in the same house for more than 50 years. They were married for 63 years prior to his death in November 1989.

Mrs. Morrissey was an active and faithful member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Libertytown, for 72 years. She worked diligently for the church and its activities, especially sewing and crocheting to raise money, and in earlier years with the church dinners and the annual St. Peter's Libertytown Tournament Day. She was also a member of the Sodality B.V.M. In 1984 she received the Rock Award for long and generous service to St. Peter's Parish. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Co. and in 1987 received an award for her help with fundraisers and the carnival. Anne was a unique person with a sharp mind, a great sense of humor and an outspoken manner of always saying what she thought. She was lovingly referred to as the "Mayor of Libertytown" and "Queen Mother."

Surviving are two daughters, Bernice M. Cooper of Walkersville, and Madeline F. Stevens of Libertytown; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She will also be fondly remembered by her many friends. She was preceded in death by sons-in-law, Andy Cooper and George Stevens; and a grandson, Joseph Cooper.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Msgr. John Dietzenbach as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Peter's cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown, where the rosary will be recited at 3:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of St. Peter's Catholic Church, P.O. Box 278, Libertytown, MD 21762, or Libertytown Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 33, Libertytown, MD 21762, or Kline Hospice House, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mr. Thomas Kennedy

Mr. Thomas Kennedy, 77, of Thurmont, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Glade Valley Nursing Home. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maureen Kennedy, and his brother Roger Kennedy.

He was born on October 23, 1931, in Long Island, New York, and was the son of the late Thomas and Gertude (Reed) Kennedy. He later lived in Montana and in Washington, D.C., before moving to Thurmont eight years ago.

He was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Thurmont.

He was a graduate of Carroll College, Helena, Mont., and of the University of Montana School of Law, Missoula, Mont. He served under the county attorney of Missoula and later moved to Washington, where he served in the Department of Defense, specializing in labor management. He also was employed by the Veterans Administration and the Department of Justice. An avid student of politics, he had the deep pleasure of being a member of the staff of several subcommittees in the House of Representatives. With the change of administrations in 1980, Tom went into private practice both in D.C. Superior Court and the Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia.

He was honored to serve his country in the United States Army and was stationed at a number of posts within the United States and also the Panama Canal Zone.

Mr. Kennedy was formerly a member of the Montana State Society, twice serving as president, the Democratic Club of D.C., the John Carroll Society and the National Press Club.

Friends will be received from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at which time there will be a prayer service at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, 18 Altamont Ave., Thurmont MD 21788, or to the Carroll College, 1601 N. Benton, Helena, MT 59601.

Mrs. M. Elizabeth Myers

Mrs. M. Elizabeth Myers, 101, formerly of Union Bridge, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Golden Living Center, Westminster. Born Oct. 28, 1907, in Union Bridge, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Messler McKinstry. She was the wife of C. Preston Myers, who predeceased her in 1981. Mrs. Myers was a member of Linwood Brethren Church, where she had previously taught Sunday school for many years, and had been a member of the Women's Missionary Society and the Ladies Quilting Group. She had been formerly employed as a clerk for several local stores. She had been a resident of Golden Living Center since June 2000.

Surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was predeceased by sister, Joanna Hesson; and brothers, Evan McKinstry and Edward McKinstry.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, with the Rev. Dan Ceary, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Pipe Creek cemetery, near Linwood. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Linwood Brethren Church, 575 McKinstry Mill Road, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Mr. Billy Ray

Mr. Billy Joe Ray, 65, of Damascus, died suddenly on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at his residence.

Born April 5, 1943, in Murphysboro, Ky., he was a son of the late Morgan Neal and Virginia Gladys Ramey Ray. He formerly owned and operated B. J. Roofing and Sheet Metal.

Surviving are his children, Shelley Freeze and husband, Jeff, of Frederick, and Eddie Ray and wife, Cathy, of Germantown; grandchildren, Warren, Darren, Dalton and Samantha; as well as sister, Evelyn Salyer of Richmond, Va.; and numerous cousins, including Roland Ray of Damascus.

Arrangements are by Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus. There will not be calling at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at the Clarksburg Church of God, 23900 Clarksburg Road, Clarksburg. The Rev. J.D. Hyman will officiate. Inurnment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Bill Joe Ray Memorial Fund for Grandchildren, sent in care of PNC Bank, 1305 W. Seventh St., Frederick, MD 21201. This fund has been established to help his grandchildren with their education.

Mr. Ernest Swann

Mr. Ernest J. Swann, 70, of Germantown, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008. He is survived by daughters, Constance D. Breen and Catherine A. Rowe; two sisters, Lillian Fraley and Margaret White; grandchildren, Amanda Krot, Jay Breen, and Jacob and Carly Row. He was predeceased by sisters, Virginia Stup and Doris Lingerfelt.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454 Alexandria, VA 22312. Please make checks payable to American Diabetes Association.

Mrs. Lorraine MacArthur Monnier

Mrs. Lorraine MacArthur Monnier, 88, of Frederick, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Dwight C. Monnier, who passed away Jan. 22, 1979.

Lorraine was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1919, at home in East Haven, Conn. She was the daughter of the late Margaret and Russell MacArthur.

Mrs. Monnier attended the University of Connecticut and graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts degree from American University, Beirut, Lebanon in 1968. She was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church for fifty years and chaired missions many times. Active politically and philanthropically, Lorraine was a charter member of P.E.O., Mount Airy Chapter. She was president four times of the Damascus Republican Wom-en's Club and vice president of the Montgomery Federation of Republican Women.

In her youth, Lorraine was a long-distance swimmer and competed in the pre-Olympic trials of 1938. She was a world traveler and international hostess. Lorraine lived with her husband and family in Karachi, Pakistan (1955 to 1957) and in Beirut, Lebanon (1966 to 1973).

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Taylor Loeb, and Linda Purdom, and son-in-law, Allan Purdom, of Frederick; a son, Dwight Monnier and daughter-in-law, Shirley Monnier, of Hagerstown; three grandchildren, Tanya Taylor Rubinstein and husband, Donald Rubenstein, of Santa Fe, N.M., Tiffany Monnier of Frederick, and Bill Purdon of Tennessee; and five great-grandchildren, Chloe of Santa Fe, N.M., and Brittany, Brandon, Bonnie and Nadia of Frederick.

Lorraine is survived by her brother, Graham MacArthur; sister-in-law, Jean, of Rochester, N.Y., and three nephews, Jim, Scott and Russ MacArthur. She was predeceased by her sister, Virginia MacArthur Hammond.

Lorraine was a wife, mother, consummate bridge player, an athlete, a gracious hostess and a knitter. She loved children, poetry, animals, reading, music and art. Lorraine was in a knitting club and had just completed her first preemie cap. Lorraine leaves many special cousins, dear, dear friends and family behind, both in the United States and abroad. She was loved by many people. She will be missed.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A private burial will be held for family and close friends in East Haven, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702 or the Damascus United Methodist Church, 9700 New Church St., Damascus, MD 20872.

Mrs. Estelle Virts

Mrs. Estelle May Virts, 79, of Knoxville, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born April 24, 1929, in Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Elmer Norris Windsor and Mary Jane Simmons Windsor Morgan.

Mrs. Virts liked to play bingo, cards and doing crossword puzzles.

Surviving are her daughters, Patricia Kisner and Lily Virts; her sons, Dean Cooper and Dane Cooper; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a sister, Lilly Blanche Leach, of Westminster. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Kisner, and her brother, Elmer Windsor Sr.

Mrs. Virts is at the Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick. There will be no calling or visiting at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the funeral home, with Raymond Lee Windsor officiating.

Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Mr. Charles Stimmel

Mr. Charles Eddie "Frog" Stimmel, 61, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at his home.

Born Feb. 16, 1947, in Frederick County, he was the son of the late Charles Andrew and Ethel B. Harding Stimmel. He was a carpenter for over 41 years. A giving person, Eddie was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf.

Surviving are a sister, Joyce Printz, of Frederick; a nephew, Ron Printz Jr. and wife, Shannon, and their son, Marcus, all of Frederick; an uncle, Casper Harding Sr. and wife, Thelma, and their son, Casper Harding Jr.; a cousin, Terry Harding and wife, Doris, of Florida; and a stepsister, Diane Whitmore and daughter, Tonya Smoot. He will also be remembered by special friends, Kenneth Fox and wife, Billie, and their son, Kenny, and Walter Mills; and neighbors, Ann Crutchley and her mother, Mable. Mr. Stimmel was preceded in death by a sister, Patsy Goodsell; a stepfather, Paul Streams; two grandmothers, Mamie Stimmel and Zennie Harding; a grandfather, Elmer Harding; and an aunt, Catherine Soper.

Services and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Joyce Printz, 120 Key Parkway, Frederick, MD 21702.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. Donald Harbaugh

Mr. Donald Harbaugh, 79, of Sabillasville, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the Village of Laurel Run nursing facility, Fayetteville, Pa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane (Green) Harbaugh, in 1996.

Mr. Harbaugh's life career was farming in the Sabillasville area. He was mechanically inclined and in his earlier years worked as a mechanic. He was a life member of the Blue Ridge Sportsman Club and volunteered his butchering skills for the Catoctin FFA.

He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie DeLauter, of Sabillasville; two granddaughters, Robin Sharer, of Pennsylvania, and Karen L. DeLauter, of Sabillasville; two sisters, Dorothy Valentine and husband, J. Richard, of Emmitsburg, and Mary J. Seiss and husband, Sterling, of Thurmont; son-in-law, Harry Sharer Jr., of Sabillasville; and his caregivers, Evelyn Smith, Melody Coulter, Mary Gouge, Susie Rodriquez and Mary Jo Dewees.

Mr. Harbaugh was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Sharer, and two infant brothers, William and Henry Harbaugh.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Monday with Evangelist Richard Long officiating.

Interment will be in Creagerstown cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of one's choice or Catoctin FFA, c/o Catoctin High School, 14745 Sabillasville Road, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mrs. Freda Shifflet

Mrs. Freda M. Shifflett, 65, of Falling Waters, W.Va., former1y of Mount Airy, went to rest on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008. Born at home on Feb. 15, 1943, in Maryland, she was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Viola Sexton.

Freda is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Suttie Shifflett Jr. Along with her husband, Freda is survived by three sons, Mark Shifflett, of Falling Waters, W.Va., Mike Shifflett, of Mount Airy and Kevin Shifflett, of Falling Waters, W.Va. Freda is also survived by five grandchildren, Steven Shifflett and wife, Ashley, Jeff Shifflett, Ryan Shifflett, Bailey Shifflett and Bethany Shifflett; one great-grandson, Gunner Shifflett; and one sister, Virginia F. Thompson and husband, Joseph, of Stanardsville, Va.

Freda will be missed by her nieces, nephews and many friends, including Jimmy, Sally, Emily and James Jones, as well as Carol Leith.

Freda touched many lives with her kind heart and loving spirit which we will all miss.

Rest in peace, our most beloved Freda.

Arrangements are private.

Mr. Andrew Maught

Mr. Andrew "Andy" Franklin Maught, 26, of Jefferson, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008.

Born August 3, 1982, in Frederick, he was the son of Charles and Daphne Maught of Jefferson.

Andy was a 2000 graduate of Brunswick High School and a 2005 graduate of West Virginia State College. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling and he was an avid Oriole and Steeler fan.

Andy's life was baseball. He had a great love and passion for the sport. He was on the last 12-year-old team from Brunswick to win the Little League State Title in 1995. He played for Brunswick High School, where they won many regional and district championships. His senior year in high school, Andy was picked for an all-star team where he played at Camden Yards. He was awarded the Merriman Scholarship to play ball at West Virginia State. While playing at West Virginia State he was named 1st Team All State. He then played for the Brunswick Orioles where they won the 2004 World Series and he was named the MVP.

In addition to his loving parents, he is survived by a brother, Matthew Maught, and a sister, Danielle Maught, both of Jefferson; a paternal grandmother, Thelma Maught, of Jefferson; a maternal grandmother, Regina Carey, of Knoxville; and three uncles, Allen Carey, Randy Carey and Vince Carey.

He will also be remembered and missed by all of his friends and his baseball family.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Andrew "Jack" Maught and Ralph Carey.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Ave., Brunswick. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, with Pastor Katrina L. Holland officiating.

Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetery, Jefferson.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Brunswick Junior Baseball, c/o Gary Wigfield, 3548 Sigler Road, Jefferson, MD 21755 to be used for the lights at Merriman Stadium or to the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3864 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755.
