Mrs. Lorraine Monnier

Mrs. Lorraine MacArthur Monnier, 88, of Frederick, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Dwight C. Monnier, who passed away Jan. 22, 1979.

Lorraine was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1919, at home in East Haven, Conn. She was the daughter of the late Margaret and Russell MacArthur.

Mrs. Monnier attended the University of Connecticut and graduated with a bachelor's of arts degree from American University, Beirut, Lebanon in 1968. She was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church for fifty years and chaired missions many times. Active politically and philanthropically, Lorraine was a charter member of P.E.O., Mount Airy Chapter. She was president four times of the Damascus Republican Women's Club and vice president of the Montgomery Federation of Republican Women.

In her youth, Lorraine was a long-distance swimmer and competed in the pre-Olympic trials of 1938. She was a world traveler and international hostess. Lorraine lived with her husband and family in Karachi, Pakistan (1955 to 1957) and in Beirut, Lebanon (1966 to 1973).

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Taylor Loeb, and Linda Purdom, and son-in-law, Allan Purdom, of Frederick; a son, Dwight Monnier and daughter-in-law Shirley Monnier of Hagerstown; three grandchildren, Tanya Taylor Rubinstein and husband Donald Rubenstein of Santa Fe, N.M., Tiffany Monnier of Frederick, and Bill Purdon of Tennessee; and five great-grandchildren, Chloe of Santa Fe, N.M., and Brittany, Brandon, Bonnie and Nadia of Frederick.

Lorraine is survived by her brother, Graham MacArthur; sister-in-law, Jean, of Rochester, N.Y., and three nephews, Jim, Scott and Russ MacArthur. She was predeceased by her sister, Virginia MacArthur Hammond.

Lorraine was a wife, mother, consummate bridge player, an athlete, a gracious hostess and a knitter. She loved children, poetry, animals, reading, music and art. Lorraine was in a knitting club and had just completed her first preemie cap. Lorraine leaves many special cousins, dear, dear friends and family behind, both in the United States and abroad. She was loved by many people. She will be missed.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A private burial will be held for family and close friends in East Haven, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702 or the Damascus United Methodist Church, 9700 New Church St., Damascus, MD 20872.

Mr. Lloyd B. Murphy

Lloyd B. "Pat" Murphy, 87, Burkittsville, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. He was the husband of Helen McGowan Murphy, who died March 23, 2008.

Born in Frederick Sept. 2, 1921, he was a son of the late Baxter and Norma Trout Murphy. He was employed as a truck driver with Ideal Farms and then Dairy Maid in Frederick until his retirement, and then worked as a courier with F&M; Bank. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Burkittsville, and was an Army veteran in World War II serving in the following theaters: Tunisia, Central Europe, Sicilian, Normandy, Northern France, and Ardennes Rhineland.

He is survived by a daughter, Brenda K. House and husband, David, of Middletown; two granddaughters, Amy E. House and Katie A. House; and a brother, Bernard Murphy and wife, Polly, of Frederick.

He was predeceased by siblings, Leonard Murphy, Estella Stoker and Catherine Snider Bruchey.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Burkittsville.

There will also be a viewing one hour prior to the church service on Tuesday. Rev. Kimberly Nunberg, his pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Locust Valley Bible Church cemetery, Middletown.

Mrs. Joan M. Payne

Joan M. Payne, 51, of Detour, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick.

Born July 10, 1957, in Mount Airy, she was the daughter of the late Sterling E. and Naomi (Elderidge) Stultz. She is survived by her husband of three years, Louis W. Payne.

Joan was a 1975 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School, Union Bridge. Joan worked for the U.S. Army Postal Service in both Europe and at Fort Detrick in Frederick. For many years, she worked as a nurse at a number of nursing facilities, and later was a deli clerk at Trout's Market in Woodsboro, and a bookkeeper for her and her husband's business "Blue Ridge Decorators."

Joan loved everything with the outdoors, including camping, gardening, crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay, and watching her fish and birds. She also loved all kinds of music, and collected teddy bears and owls.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are children and spouses, Bobbi Jo Leister Silver and husband, Matthew, of Lexington, Ky., Christina Marie Leister Kelley and husband, David, of New Oxford, Pa.; a stepson, Ryan Lee Payne, of Detour; grandchildren, Elisabeth Clair Silver, Jacob Preston Silver, Mikayla Marie Stockman, and Brenton Elijay Kelley; siblings, David L. Stultz, Barbara E. Miller, Marion S. Hunt, Phillip E. Stultz, Wilbur L. Stultz, Janet E. Kern, Timmy Stultz and Steve Stultz.

Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by siblings, James Stultz and Daris Ann Stultz.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, with the Rev. Glenn Morman officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ruby Nichols Jackson

Mrs. Ruby Nichols Jackson, 84, of Frederick, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife for 54 years to Mr. Charles Lacey Jackson. Born June 29, 1924, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Albert Owen and Bessie E. (Coleman) Nichols.

Mrs. Jackson attended classes and studied at Frederick County Community College, Penn State University, as well as Hood College.

She was a lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Frederick, and held numerous positions on the church staff. Some of these positions included activities director of children and youth, secretary, and more recently as the director and teacher of the Calvary Weekday School. Mrs. Jackson sang in the Chancel Choir at church for many years and was also a member of the original community chorus under the direction of the late Dr. Earl Blasklee.

Other areas in which she served in the church and community where church school teacher and counselor, the Wesleyan Service Guild, member of the administrative board, church records and history committee, education and school committee, Girl Scout and Brownie leader, primary and junior craft club leader, councilor for the Frederick County Interdenominational Youth Council, member of the original Frederick County Choral Society, and served on the leadership staff of The American Youth Foundation in Muskegon, Mich.

In her free time, she enjoyed hobbies such as music, beading, ceramics, egg art, reading, crafts and especially the fellowship of family and friends. Her family remembers her telling many jokes during these times.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her son and daughter, Stephen Charles Jackson, and Cynthia Jackson Yeager and husband, Mark. She has two granddaughters, Emily E. Yeager and Hannah Rebecca Yeager. She was sister-in-law to Virginia Snyder, of Williamsport. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Norman Smith and wife, Gail Montplasir, of Washington, and Norman Snyder and wife, Betty, of Vienna, Va. Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her siblings, Albert Nichols Jr., Owen Albert Nichols and Ethel D.E. Nichols Smith. She is also leaving behind special friends, Rev. Ken and Lois Tyson, Rev. Julian and Telli Tavenner, Marlee Richardson and Beverly Jackson.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 W. Second St., Frederick. The Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington will officiate.

Interment will follow at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Jackson's name to the Calvary United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Helen Lowe

Helen "Ermie" Lowe, 82, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Buckingham's Choice retirement home. Ermie and her late husband, "Bill" Lowe, to whom she was married for 42 years, resided in Laytonsville for most of those years. Born in Suiter, Va., on Dec. 18, 1926, she was the youngest of 12 children of the late William and Susie Webb of Urbana.

Ermie had many, many friends in Laytonsville, as well as Edenton and Buckingham's Choice, where she resided after her health failed. She was a member of Mount Tabor Methodist Church in Etchison. She was a very loving and caring soul, who never knew a stranger.

Ermie is survived by one dauther-in-law, Kaaren Kerrigan of Gaithersburg; one stepson, Thomas Lowe of Hawaii; one sister, Louise "Dobbie" Zarnstorff of Mississippi; one brother, Hyter Webb of Laytonsville; five grandchildren, Keith Lowe of Hawaii, Jeremy B. Lowe of California, Jeremy G. Lowe of California, Barbara Lowe of N.C., and Tony Lowe of S.C.; an abundance of nieces and nephews, to whom she was always a very special aunt.

She was preceded in death by one stepson, Billy Lowe; two sisters, Edna Hubble and Vivian "T" Gregg; and seven brothers, Herman, Ernest, Earl, Willis "Bill," Arthur "Riggs," Steward "Pete" and Frazier "Fay" Webb.

The viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home.

Those desiring, may send memorial donations to the Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, 24115 Laytonsville Road, Etchison.

Mr. Wayne Reeder

Wayne L. Reeder, 63, of Lewistown, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 at 3 a.m. in the Lewistown Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born Feb. 28, 1945 in Frederick, as the son of the late Austin L. and Irene (Lawson) Reeder.

He is survived by his wife, Susan (Keefer) Reeder, they were married Oct. 19, 1983. He is also survived by a brother, Richard L. Reeder of New Market and a sister, Bonnie McMichaels of Newport News, Va.

He graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science in dairy and animal husbandry. He was employed as a marketing representative and salesman for Select Sire Power, Rocky Mount, Va. for 20 years.

He was a member of Linganore United Methodist Church, Unionville; The Pennsylvania and National Holstein Association; Pennsylvania and National Brown Swiss Association; National Rifle Association; North American Hunting Club; life member of Buck Masters -- he was an avid hunter. He loved and was very knowledgeable in dairy science.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, in Mount Olive cemetery, Frederick. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Pennsylvania Holstein Association Youth Scholarship Fund, 839 Benner Pike, State College, PA 16801.

Mr. Robert Harrison

Robert Emory Harrison, 84, of Woodbine, died on his mother's birthday, Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster.

He was born Sept. 21, 1924 in Carroll County, Mount Airy, as the son of the late Freddie Eugene Harrison and the late Catherine Mary Broderick Harrison.

He was a life-time farmer — delivering a load of soybeans to Keymar on the morning he went into the hospital — and a member of Carroll County Farm Bureau, Frederick Moose Lodge #371, Sons of the American Legion Post #191 Mount Airy, life member of Westminster Elks Lodge #2277, life member of Jeffersonian Patriotic Club of Frederick Co., charter member of Mount Airy VFW Post #10076 Men's Auxiliary, member of Mount Airy Vol. Fire Co. and a charter member Winfield Vol. Fire Company.

He was the husband of Shirley Ann Harrison (nee Evans); father of Michael Robert Harrison Sr. and wife Ann of Woodbine, Patsy Harrison Koontz and husband Thommy of Mount Airy and Laura Langhage and husband Chris of Woodbine; brother of Francis Edward "Johnnie" Harrison of Union Bridge, Loretta M. Widerman of Sykesville and the late Fred Eugene "Gene" Harrison; loving grandfather of Melissa Schulze and husband Bret, Cara Harrison, and Michael R. Harrison Jr. and wife Marla, Brandi Barth and husband Brian and Catherine Gregory and husband Jacob, and Dalton and Tyler Langhage.

He is also survived by three great-grandsons, Kyle Schulze and Hunter and Connor Barth and two great-granddaughters, Alyson Schulze and Makayla Gregory.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A. 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield.

Interment will be in St. Michael's R.C. Church cemetery, Poplar Springs.

A Catholic prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the funeral home. Fr. Michael J. Ruane will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Winfield Vol. Fire Company 1320 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD 21784 or favorite charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Barbara Simmons

Mrs. Barbara Jean Simmons, 76, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at her home on Dec. 4, 2008, after a short illness. She was born July 29, 1932 in Garrett Park, and was the daughter of Gladys Noreen Goggans.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Marvin Wheaton Simmons Jr. They were wed Feb. 9, 1950. Both she and her husband were natives of Bethesda and resided in Montgomery County for many years before moving to Frederick.

Mrs. Simmons in also survived by her children, Debra Jean Simmons Dove, Lawrence Marvin Simmons, Donald Wheaton Simmons and Laura Jean Simmons Allen; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She is remembered as a loving, dedicated spouse and mother. She will be dearly missed.

Private family services and interment will be held Monday, Dec. 8, at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. Malcolm Barger

Mr. Malcolm Barger, 84, of Homewood/Crumland Farms, Frederick, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008. He was the husband of Pat Haller Barger, his wife of 56 years who preceded him in death in2003.

Born Nov. 19, 1924, he was the son of the late Marshall E. and Claudia Mohler Barger.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. After the war, he was employed for several years with Litton Chevrolet of Brunswick as a parts manager, and then was a fireman for the railroad. He then spent 35 years as the Sales Manager of Industrial Products with the M.J. Grove Lime Co. of Frederick.

Following his retirement, he was an avid golfer with the seniors group at Beaver Creek Country Club in Hagerstown. He also spent many hours as a tour guide with the Brunswick Railroad Museum. Many came to know him as "Mac the Fireman."

Surviving are three sons, Laurence E. Barger and wife Patricia of Boonsboro, C. Jeffrey Barger and wife Brenda of Damascus, and Steven W. Barger and wife P.J. of Frederick; one daughter, Kay I . Etzler and husband Bill of Monrovia, 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, C. Riley Barger and Marshall J. Barger; and two sisters, V. Deloris Barger and N. Janice Good.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Ave., Brunswick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Grace Episcopal Church, 114 A St., Brunswick. Rev. Frank Fortkamp will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 114 A St., Brunswick, MD 21716; Brunswick Railroad Museum, 40 W. Potomac St., Brunswick, MD 21716; or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
