Mr. George Dampman

George A. Dampman, 36, of Dayton, Ohio, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

He was an avid football player and Michigan fan. The loves of his life were his dog, Killian; his Honda motorcycle; and his friends and family.

He is survived by his father, John Dampman and mother and stepfather, Beverly and Ron Meharg.

A memorial service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bradford-Connelly and Glickler Funeral Home, 1849 Salem Ave., Dayton, Ohio.

Ms. Shelly Ramirez

Shelly Beth Molesworth Ramirez, 38, of Frederick, died suddenly Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was born April 15, 1970 in Frederick.

Shelly graduated from Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, Class of 1988, and from Frederick Community College, Class of 1991. She was the loving mother of Brooke Ashley Molesworth, 17, and McKenzie Kathlyn Ortiz, 3 months.

Shelly had a great sense of humor, an infectious smile and laugh, and saw the good in everyone. She always tried to help others to be their best and wanted to save every animal. Shelly always loved to dance, and we know she is dancing and smiling in Heaven.

Shelly is survived by her parents, Linda and Bill Cleveland of Frederick and Ron and Denise Molesworth of Boonsboro; sister, Lori Dembeck of Walkersville; half-sister, Heather Molesworth; grandparents, George and Catherine VanFossen of Frederick; and grandmother Gladys Molesworth of Mount Airy.

Shelly is also survived by her former husband, Dan Ramirez; her current companion, Roberto Ortiz; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at the funeral home. Rev. Tim May will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to her two favorite charities: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Frederick County Animal Shelter.

Mr. Millard Gartner Jr.

Millard James Gartner Jr., 91, formerly of Gaithersburg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Heartland House Hospice, Wilmington, Del. He was the husband of the late Mary Snowberger Gartner who passed away in 1973.

"Jim" was born in Gaithersburg on June 25, 1917 and was a lifelong resident. He moved to Delaware in 2006 to be closer to his daughter, Judy. He was the oldest son of the late Millard James Gartner Sr. and Helen Nelson and was also preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Thomas Gartner. Mr. Gartner served in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Staff Artillery Sergeant while serving in northern France and Germany.

Mr. Gartner managed his own taxi business and Amoco service station in Gaithersburg before joining the sales force of Reed Brothers Dodge of Rockville. He enjoyed raising beef cattle and participating in the Montgomery County 4H Beef Club with his daughter, Patricia. Mr. Gartner was an avid Heisey glass collector for the past 35 years and a member and past president of the National Capital Heisey Collectors Club.

The accomplishments of Mr. Gartner's daughters and his grandchildren were a great source of pride to him. Jim was a devoted husband, son, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. Family meant everything to him.

Jim will be greatly missed by his daughters, Judith Gartner Curtis of Wilmington, Del. and Patricia Gartner MacDonald and husband Gerald of Houston, Texas; his grandchildren, Matthew Curtis and wife Sonia Dingilian of Brooklyn, N.Y., Elizabeth Curtis and Dan Rogers of Milton, Mass., Sally MacDonald Martin and husband Brandon of Houston, Texas, and Stacy MacDonald Gordon and husband Andrew, Chicago, Ill. He is also survived by his brother, Ernest Lee Gartner and family of Germantown, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Laytonsville.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to St. Paul's Methodist Church or to Heartland House Hospice, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Mrs. Clara Shipe

Clara L. "Sis" Shipe, of Rockville, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008.

She was the beloved wife of the late Harry Shipe.

She is survived by her brother, Melvin Lee Penn (Margaret); nephews and nieces, Blair L. Penn (Vida), C. Patricia Powell (Ronnie), Jerry E. Penn (Joanne), Donald A. Penn (Betty), Sara Clark (John), Michael Tolker (Kerianne), Joseph Tolker (Barbara) and Nancy Berry (Jay). Mrs. Shipe is also survived by her 16 great-nieces and great-nephews and her 12 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She will also be missed by her close friends Dennis, Anne and Michael Riley and many other friends too numerous to mention.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, the late William S. Penn and the late Mary A. Tolker.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Avenue, Rockville.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at First Baptist Church of Rockville, 55 Adclare Road, Rockville.

Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Glenview Mansion Fund, 603 Edmonston Drive, Rockville, MD 20851. Make checks payable to "City of Rockville," and in reference line write, "Glenview Mansion."

Mrs. Doris Kiser

Doris E. Kiser, 81, of Lewisburg, Pa., died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 3, 2008, at the Evangelical Community Hospital after being suddenly stricken at her home Sunday night.

Doris was born in Thurmont on Dec. 9, 1926, as a daughter of the late Albert Merhle and Edith Elizabeth (Tressler) Ecker. She married Charles Jack Kiser, Feb. 2, 1946, and her death breaks a marital union of 62 years.

In her early days she worked for the Taneytown Rubber factory making ponchos for the troops; then Thurmont Clair Frock Co.; and later for her mother-in-law, Margaret Seipler, at the Koffee Kup in Frederick. After moving to Lewisburg in 1961, she worked at the JPM Company until her retirement in 1976.

Doris was a loving and caring person, who never hesitated to give to others -- though she would go without. She dearly loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Doris was a baseball fan, and loved the old Baltimore Colts football team. Doris will be remembered for her warmth and spirit; for her love of life and for her gift in recognizing the special qualities in everyone she met.

She loved watching God's birds and the squirrels that Jack fed, she traveled abroad, but especially enjoyed yearly trips to the beach with nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. She enjoyed a weekly trip to play the punch boards and a yearly trip to Kent Island, to play the slots.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Deone Pawling DeLizio of Lewisburg; a grandson Jason Pawling; and great-granddaughter, Sidney of Elizabethtown; granddaughter, Jennifer and husband Paul McConachy; great-granddaughter, Maddison and great-grandson, Kiser of Brisbane Australia.

Also surviving are nieces, Beverly and Barry Mapp of Harrington, Del., Linda and Ed Skewes of Manassas, Va., Audrey and John Stush of Frederick, and Debbie Ecker of Thurmont; nephews, David and Sue Rayfield of Ocean City, Ronald and Rosie Brown of Selbyville, Del., Andy and Sylvia Coe of Orlando, Fla., Gregory and Peggy Ecker of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Larry and Donna Ecker of Thurmont; sister, Audrie Coe of Silver Spring; and sisters-in-law, Grace Ecker and Janie Ecker of Thurmont.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Merhle "Doc" Ecker and Albert "Abe" Ecker; sisters, Winifred "Wini" Ecker and husband Hiram Brown and Shirley Ecker Baker and husband Donald "Bake" Baker; nephews, Bradley Baker, Steven Ecker and Douglas Ecker; and niece, Barbara Oxenham; and brother-in-law, Andrew Coe.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 13, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 103 E. Main St., Thurmont. Rev. Jan Daffern will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Blue Ridge cemetery.

The family will provide flowers and asks that donations in Doris' memory be made to the donor's local S.P.C.A.

Arrangements are by John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Lewisburg.

Mr. Wayne Reeder

Wayne L. Reeder, 63, of Lewistown, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 at 3 a.m. in the Lewistown Hospital Emergency Room.

The Reeder family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Mount Olivet cemetery Chapel, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at Mount Olivet, followed by graveside services in the cemetery. Rev. David Coakley will officiate.

Mr. James Sanders

James E. "Jim" Sanders, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, of cancer. This year, Jim celebrated the "35th anniversary of his 28th birthday" and his 40th wedding anniversary.

Jim liked to share that he was born in the White House to Paul and Cecelia (Reese) Sanders on July 3, 1945. The White House was another name for the Sisters of Charity Hospital in Emmitsburg. Jim grew up in Emmitsburg and graduated from St. Joseph's High School, Class of 1963.

On Nov. 16, 1968, Jim and Patricia Elizabeth Stitely were married in Emmitsburg. They went on to have three boys, James (Heidi) of Mooresville, N.C.; Kurt (Kirsten) of Lancaster, Pa.; and Paul (Amy) of Iowa City, Iowa. They also enjoy three grandchildren, Mackenzie and Gage Sanders (James) and Kian Sanders (Kurt).

The family has lived in Emmitsburg, Lewisburg, Pa., Gurnee, Ill. and Iowa City, Iowa.

Jim earned his associate's degree from Fredrick Community College in business management in 1970. He enjoyed lifelong learning, earning more than 160 college credits from Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania and The University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Jim retired from Moore Business Forms in Iowa City in 2004, after working for the company for more than 37 years. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City, and attended the Newman Center. Jim was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Marquette Council 842 and treasurer of G.W.L.A.

Jim would want you to know that he was a closet cowboy, watching old spaghetti westerns and listening to country music. He also loved muscle cars and could tell you how to cook an egg on the manifold.

He is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; brother, Charles (Mary) Sanders of Taneytown; half-brother, Ron Sanders of Canada; five stepbrothers and five stepsisters; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul and Gary; and sister, Mary Ann.

Jim was much loved and will be missed by all.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmitsburg. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in Emmitsburg.

A memorials fund has been established in Jim Sanders name.

Mrs. Norma Checkley

Mrs. Norma June Checkley, 83, of Comus, died at her family home on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, surrounded by her husband, her four daughters, and her grandchildren. She leaves behind her loving husband of 60 years, G. Robert (Bob) Checkley. Born Nov. 28, 1925 in Raymond, Neb., she was the beloved daughter of the late Marion L. and Dorothy Springer Bagley.

Surviving besides her husband are her four daughters, Carol Checkley of Comus, Janice Connell (Charlie) of Houston, Texas, Gini Guentner (Bob) of Vernon Hills, Ill., Sharon Skipper (Rick) of Comus; one sister, Lois Boston of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; 11 grandchildren, Katie, Celeste, Charles, Sean, Joshua, Brian, Jonathan, Emily, Nathan, Brandon, and Robbie; and three great-grandchildren, Jadon, Katelyn, and Eli. Mrs. Checkley was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Sandra Sue and Lauren.

Norma lived a full, joyful, and rich life. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 with a bachelor of science in nursing from the College of Nursing. It was at the University of Michigan that she met her husband, Bob.

Norma was a full-time homemaker, mother, and hostess extraordinaire, but she also opened "Knits 'N Bolts," a store that showcased her incredible talent as seamstress. She delighted in making all of her daughters' clothes, including wedding and bridesmaids' dresses, and was a creative crafter in all areas of the arts.

She was truly a Proverbs 31 woman. "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.'" She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

As God welcomed her home, He surely said "Well done, good and faithful servant." Matt. 25:21.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Norma's name to the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area Chapter, 11240 Waples Mill Road, Suite 402, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Mr. Franklin Kline

Franklin Eugene Kline, 71, of Boonsboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Washington County Hospital after a long illness. Born Sept. 4, 1937, he was the son of the late Alvey Woodrow Kline and Alverta May (Pryor) Kline of Myersville.

He was employed by Wolfe Brothers/Wolfe and Sons for more than 40 years.

He served in the military for two years.

He was a member of Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville.

He is survived by his wife, Delores (Palmer) Kline; and one son, Gregory Kline; four brothers, Edgar Kline Sr. and wife Miriam, Ronald Kline and wife Carol, Marvin Kline and wife Kaye, Gary Kline and wife Jorja, all of Myersville; two sisters, Patsy Miller and husband Kenneth and Joyce Forsyth and husband Jeffrey, both of Hagerstown; sisters-in-law, Delores Kline of Boonsboro and Sandra Kline of Smithsburg; three aunts, Ruth Kline, Miriam Rice and Edna Pryor; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Maurice, Woodrow A. and Hubert, as well as an infant sister, Nancy.

Arrangements are by Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, 11301 Meeting House Road, Myersville, MD 21773. Rev. Tim and Rev. Donna Ritchey Martin will officiate.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Church "Memorial Garden Fund."

A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Mr. John Phillips

John Gregory Phillips, 50, of Walkersville and formerly of Garrett Park-Kensington, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

He was a son of the late Roy and Bette Phillips; loving father of Christian, Elizabeth, Kaitlyn and Timothy Phillips; loving brother of Thomas Phillips, Alma Gordon, Elizabeth Swayne and Jim Phillips and devoted grandfather of Christian Jr. He is also survived by his companion of many years, Daisy Gibson. He is also survived by six nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.

The family received friends Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Cedarbrook Community Church, 23700 Stringtown Road, Clarksburg, MD 20871.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
