Ms. Linda Wiles

Linda Lou Wiles, 56, of Myersville, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at her home after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. She fought and persevered as long as her body would allow.

Linda was born Dec. 29, 1951, in Frederick, and was the youngest daughter of Lucille Bowser Wiles, whom resided with her, and the late Charles Ellsworth (Hambone) Wiles.

As a child, Linda was a Girl Scout of Troop 1250 in Yellow Springs. Throughout her school years, she was a member of the girls chorus at West Frederick Junior High School, the girls chorus at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, a member of the FTA Club, the Gov. Thomas Johnson High School volleyball team and the National Honor Society.

Becoming a young adult, Linda played on the Assorted Nuts volleyball team of Frederick. Later, she joined a secret pal group that was a part of her life for more than 30 years. Linda was very artistic and taught ceramics at the Eaglesnest Ceramic Studio, Braddock Heights, for many years. She enjoyed crafting and painting and giving the items as gifts to others as well.

Linda graduated from Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, Class of 1969, and continued her education at Frederick Community College, graduating in 1971 with an Associate in Arts degree. In 1973, she graduated from Towson State College with a Bachelor of Science degree. She then continued her education by earning a Master of Education degree from Western Maryland College, Class of 1976 (now McDaniel College).

She paid her way through college working at AAA, waitressing at the Peter Pan Inn, and working as a clerk at Peoples Drug Store on Jefferson Street. In 1986, Linda became a licensed real estate agent.

Linda touched thousands of lives as she was a well known educator in Frederick County public schools for more than 35 years. Her teaching career began at Elm Street School for one year, then South Frederick Elementary School, Building B, for nine years.

The next 15 years were spent close to home teaching at Wolfsville Elementary School. She then transitioned from teaching children to administration and was appointed to the position of assistant principal at Spring Ridge Elementary, followed by Waverly Elementary.

The next milestone of her career was the appointment to principal at Liberty Elementary School. At the end of her career, came her ultimate desire and dream job, Linda came back home to Myersville and was appointed to the position of principal at Myersville Elementary School.

Due to the vicious disease she fell victim to, Linda retired after 35 years of dedicated service to the children of Frederick County. Throughout her 35-year career, she earned the respect of many colleagues and became a mentor to most of them.

She was a member of the NEA and MSTA.

In addition to her mother, Lucille Bowser Wiles of Myersville, she leaves behind a sister, Elizabeth (Libby) Bowers and husband, Jim; and a brother, Charles (Chuck) Wiles, all of Myersville. She is also survived by two nieces that she helped raise just the same as if they were her own, Mary Heatherly and friend, Tom Tobery, of Frederick, and Lisa Heatherly Montgomery and husband, Dave, of Urbana. She is also survived by her brother's children, nephew Charlie Wiles, and nieces Nicole Cramer and Jessica Ryce; and two great-nieces who were a very special part of her life, Reva Heatherly and Kaylyn Horner. Reva was truly the light of her life, as she raised Reva as her own. Also surviving is a nephew, Darryl Bowers; two aunts, Hilda C. Wiles of Frederick and Yvonne Carr of Cumberland; three uncles, Lloyd Bowser Jr. of Florida, Fred Bowser of Oakland and Frank Bowser of Pennsylvania; and many cousins.

As a result of her caring, giving, unselfish ways of life, Linda leaves behind many, many close friends and colleagues.

Linda was preceded in death by her "King," her father, Hambone in 1988; uncle, Ray T. Wiles; and cousins, Alan Wiles, Stevie Wiles, Harland Bowser Jr.; and aunt, Mary Katherine Wiles Eyler. Linda's uncle, Harland Bowser Sr., also fought a courageous battle with cancer and died at 6:15 a.m. on the same day as her passing.

Linda was a very loving and generous soul who saw the best in everyone and every situation. She will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity. She was truly a courageous, honest, unselfish soul, who put others ahead of herself. She lived her life for others, not herself, and always used an unconditional approach to every situation.

The Wiles family is grateful for the support of their extended family and friends. A special thank you to Dr. Sajjad Aziz for the ongoing care he provided, the staff of Myersville and Wolfsville Elementary Schools, and the community of Myersville. A special heartfelt thank you to Pastor Kathy Vitalis Hoffman of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, and also Pastor Dick Thomas of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Middletown.
