Mr. Donald Roscoe Mackley

Mr. Donald Roscoe Mackley, 86, of Gettysburg, Pa., died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at the Genesis Gettysburg Center, Gettysburg, Pa. He was the husband of Mary Annabelle Wood Mackley, who died June 14, 2008.

Born April 12, 1922, in Union Bridge, he was a son of the late Clarence and Edna Frock Mackley.

Mr. Mackley had been employed as a furniture maker at Hoke Furniture. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church of Rocky Ridge.

Surviving is a half sister-in-law, Shirley Bowman and husband, Bruce of Rocky Ridge. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Wayne Mackley; and a brother, Roland Mackley.

Mr. Mackley is at the Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 14.

On Monday, Dec. 15, Mr. Mackley will be removed to the Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 10043 Longs Mill Road, Rocky Ridge, where he will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. at which time services will begin with the Rev. James Russell officiating.

Interment will be in Rocky Ridge Lutheran cemetery.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Mr. Mackley to the Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 10043 Longs Mill Road, Rocky Ridge, MD 21778.

Mr. William Shook

Mr. William Irving "Pete" Shook, 68, of Amory, Miss., a former Monroe County coroner, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after an extended illness. Born Sept. 8, 1940, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of Jacob Murray and Helen Knill Shook. In 1963, he married Carolyn Jenkins, who survives him.

He lived in Frederick until the age of 18. He also lived in Columbus, Miss., and settled in Amory for 45 years. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Amory where he also served on the Administrative Board and the TV team.

He had been an officer for the Amory Police Department, chief deputy for the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, worked for CASA and then as a police officer for Itawamba Community College. He also was Monroe County coroner for 10 years, a scout master, a Master Mason, member of the Kiwanis Club and Survival Inc. He was a member and past president of the Mississippi Deputy Sheriff's Association, and he enjoyed woodworking and hunting.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, William Patrick Shook (Mitzi) of Amory; one daughter, Patti Shook Cumberland of Amory; one sister, Betty Marie Beeby of Erie, Pa.; three nieces, Missy Barnes, Kim Minnaugh and Brianna Schneider; 10 grandchildren, Angela, Holly, Jessica and Emily Shook, Wesley Robinson (Stephanie), Brett and Maci Faulkner, and Jake, John-Isaac and Luke Cumberland; and one great-grandchild, Alex Robinson. He is also survived by a close cousin, Franklin E. "Butch" Stockman Jr. and wife, Pat, of Frederick.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were Pat Patterson, Steve Hunt, Prentiss Wigginton, Jerry Conwill, Ronnie Bowen, Don Meridith, Tim Rutledge, John Robinson and Barry Ford. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy and John Callihan, Donald Steed, Phil Roberts, Daniel Monaghan, Earl Henson, Jerry McKee and Roger Wigginton.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 147, Amory, MS 38821 or the Amory Fire Dept., 109 Front St., Amory MS 38821.

Mr. Leon Koiro

Mr. Leon "Lee" Vincent Koiro, 73, of Frederick, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at home. Born Oct. 14, 1935, in Edwardsville, Pa., he was the son of the late Catherine Peterson Koiro and Leo M. Koiro.

He was an active member of St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church in Walkersville, and a 4th degree Knight of Columbus.

He leaves behind a loving wife of 50 years, Marguerite "Maggie" Koiro; six children, Thomas Koiro and wife, Claire of Sacramento, Calif., Barbara Daye and husband, Michael of Frederick, Joan Savoy and husband, Rich of Sinking Spring, Pa., David Koiro and Karen Zunski of Fleetwood, Pa., Mark Koiro and wife, Christine of West Lawn, Pa., and Michael Koiro and wife, Tamara of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, Gerald Koiro of Yantis, Texas, Richard Koiro of Northampton, Pa., and Robert Koiro of Hellertown, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Lovingly known as "Pop-Pop," he is survived by 10 grandchildren, Michael Daye II, Eliza Daye, Brian LeRoy, Corinne Koiro, Matthew Savoy, Nathaniel Savoy, Daniel Savoy, Joshua Koiro, Andrew Koiro and Ruth Koiro.

He graduated from St. Vincent's High School in Plymouth, Pa. He attended St. Albert's Jr. Seminary in Middletown, N.Y., King's College of Wilkes Barre, Pa. and Syracuse University. He was employed in the restaurant industry as a supervisor for 35 years retiring in 1993.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at the Stauffer Funeral Home on Opossumtown Pike. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at St. Timothy's in Walkersville, with the Rev. Andy Aaron and the Rev. Richard Murphy officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Timothy's building fund would be appreciated. Interment will be private.

Mrs. Margaret E. Strickland

Mrs. Margaret E. Strickland, of Myersville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at Washington County Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Clifford A. Strickland, who died on Sept. 25, 1978.

Born Sept. 26, 1926, in Pensacola, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Carl C. and Mary C. Higgins. Margaret graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Fla. Her greatest pleasures were all her grandchildren. She referred to them as her "beautiful doll babies."

She is survived by four children, Susan E. Rhodes and husband, Tom, Glenn M. Strickland, Karen M. Flook and husband, Joe, and Richard L. Strickland and wife, Rhonda; 11 grandchildren, Lance Strickland and wife, Sherry, Clay Strickland, Sarah Bailey and husband, Zane, Andrew Strickland, Justin Flook, Brian Rhodes, Kimberly Ward and husband, John, Joseph Flook, Kayla Strickland, Ashley Strickland and Meghan Strickland; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Carl C. Higgins Jr. and Robert Higgins.

Visitation will be held privately for the family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 112 E. 2nd Street, Frederick. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Floral tributes are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., in Frederick.

Mrs. Aline Margaret Scott

Mrs. Aline Margaret Scott, 95, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at The Willows, Homewood at Crumland Farms, from complications of pneumonia. Aline was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Sugar Creek, Ohio, and was a graduate of the Aultman School of Nursing, Canton, Ohio, class of 1934. After a career in industrial nursing, she served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky.

She was the beloved wife of the late retired Maj. Adrian Scott, and daughter of the late Charles Walters and Mary Renner, Canton, Ohio.

She is survived by her daughters, Sue Scott Nisenfeld and husband, Frank, of Frederick and Ann Scott Coakley and husband, Robert, of Springfield, Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer Nisenfeld and husband, Antonio Guerrero, Scott A. Nisenfeld, all of Frederick, Robert A. Coakley and wife, Eneli of Alexandria, Va., and Edward S. Coakley, of Springfield, Va.; and a great-grandson.

She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jeannette Scott Day and nephew, C. Lance Nealy.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, John C. Scott; grandson, Andrew D. Nisenfeld and brother, Delmar Walters.

The funeral and burial will be at Arlington National cemetery at a future date.

Mr. Herbert Elsworth Michaels Jr.

Mr. Herbert Elsworth Michaels Jr., 78, of Thurmont, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Kline Hospice House, near New Market, after an illness of several weeks. Born Jan. 18, 1930, in the Johnsville district of Frederick County, he was the son of the late Herbert E. Sr. and Cora A. Rippeon Michaels.

He was the husband of Miyoko Michaels, his wife of 52 years. Mr. Michaels was a 1948 graduate of Elmer A. Wolfe High School, Union Bridge.

After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 18 years, part of the time in Japan where he met his wife. He retired from the service in December 1966 as a senior chief engineman.

After the service, he was employed by the city of San Diego, Calif., in air conditioning and refrigeration.

In 1977, he and his wife moved to Thurmont when he began employment with Fort Detrick, retiring in 1991 as a refrigeration shop foreman.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 168 and Amvets Post 7, both of Thurmont; V.F.W. Post 8806 of Union Bridge; a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 142 of Frederick; and he was a plank owner of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and remodeling projects with his brothers, Marlin and Lawrence.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Steven A. Michaels and wife, Norma, of El Paso, Texas, and Thomas E. Michaels and wife, Nancy, of San Diego, Calif.; seven granddaughters and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Rita Roundtree of Virginia; and three brothers, Lawrence L. Michaels, of Tennessee, Marlin R. Michaels and wife, Vivica, of Manchester, and Leonard A. Michaels and wife, Tina, of California.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Ricky Lee Michaels in 1959, and three brothers, Ronald, Bernard and Gene Michaels.

A funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro. Military interment will be in Rocky Hill cemetery, near Woodsboro. The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Ms. Sabrina Shamein Jackson

Sabrina Shamein Jackson, 45, of Hagerstown and formerly of Frederick, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, after a lengthy illness.

Born June 6, 1963, in Frederick, she was the daughter of Lena Edwards and Charles Jackson.

She attended school in Frederick.

She leaves to cherish her memory her six children, Lynetta Thompson, Amanda Gilford, Michael Hackey, Anthony Hackey, Shennetta Hackey and Danielle Hackey; four grandchildren, Shatavia Williams, Andre Cooper, Jamari Wise and Jamere Wise; three brothers; one sister; a host of nieces, nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon, at which time services will begin in the above chapel. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery, Frederick.

Mr. James O. Downes

Mr. James O. "Puggie" Downes, 74, of West Virginia, formerly of Rockville and Cabin John, lost his battle with brain cancer Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at his daughter's home in Rockville. He was surrounded by his family as he peacefully left this Earth to be with God in heaven.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Janet Mills Downes and daughters, Gale Riner and husband Larry of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Judy Butts and husband Glenn of Rockville. J.O. leaves one grandson, who he loved dearly, J.C. Butts and wife Kyla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Thomas Downes Sr.; his brother, Thomas Downes Jr.; and his sister, Catherine Downes.

J.O. was a volunteer fireman with the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department for nine years and the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years. He was recently honored with the presentation of a plaque commemorating his 50 years of service to RVFD. He worked as a route salesman for Coca-Cola for many years.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at the Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville. A fire department memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, during the evening visitation at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Barber Funeral Home.

Inurnment will be at the Darnestown Presbyterian Church cemetery, 15120 Turkey Foot Road, Darnestown.

Mrs. Betty Kathleen Payne

Betty Kathleen Payne, 73, of Burkittsville, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy. She was the wife of Clifton E. Payne.

Born in Burkittsville, Aug. 8, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mazie Long Mentzer. She was a member of the Grace Community Church, Frederick.

Surviving, in addition her husband, are eight children, Kenneth Eugene Payne, of Sharpsburg, Michael Eugene Payne, of Hedgesville, W.Va., Ricky Lee Payne, of Charles Town, W.Va., Brenda Kay Griffith, of Keedysville, Dwayne Eddie Payne, of Brunswick, Tina L. Delauter, of Frederick, Jerry Lee Payne, of Brunswick, and Christopher Clifton Payne, of Keys Ferry Acres, W.Va.; two brothers, George Mentzer, of Middletown, and Robert Mentzer, of Burkittsville; two sisters, Peggy Burns, of Burkittsville, and Darlene Carey, of Brunswick; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Joel Delauter.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, from Grace Community Church, 5102 Old National Pike, Frederick.

Pastor R. Dallas Greene will officiate. Interment will be made in the Union cemetery, Burkittsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kline Hospice House, 7001 Kimmel Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Mrs. Audrey Clipp

Audrey Mae Green Clipp, 76, of Boonsboro, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at her home.

Born Jan. 17, 1932 in Lovettsville, Va., Audrey was a daughter of the late Daniel and Lillian Conner Green.

She had formerly owned and operated Audrey's Motel and Restaurant at Lake Anna in Spotsylvania, Va.

Audrey was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren.

She was a member of Brunswick Moose Lodge 660 Ladies Auxiliary, Brunswick Eagles Aerie 1136 Ladies Auxiliary, Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Boonsboro, Pythian Sisters in Brunswick and Purple Martin Society of Frederick.

Audrey is survived by seven daughters, Dianne Rhinaman of Boonsboro, Vicky Dinges of Frederick, Penny Rhea of Kentucky, Dawn Ruppert of New Market, Kathy Conner of New Jersey, Pam Barnhouse of Sharpsburg, and Linda Butts of Hagerstown; one brother, Eugene Green of Brunswick; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Cannon, Evelyn Howard, and Bernice Comer; one brother, Ernest Green, and a grandson, William Rhinaman.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Brownsville Church of the Brethren. Rev. Alan Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Bast Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.
