Mr. Victor Woodward
Mr. Victor Junior "Bill" Woodward, 65, of New Market, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Frances Ann Burdiss Woodward, his wife of 46 1Ú2 years.
Born Feb. 24, 1943, in Clarksburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Victor and Leoma Marie Cross Woodward.
Bill was fortunate enough to explore several successful careers, beginning as a truck driver with Woodruff Airco, then with the Clarksburg W.Va. Police Department, where he was a member of the local FOP, and in the automotive glass industry with Adamston Glass Factory, Fourco Glass Co., Asahi Glass Co., Banner Glass Co. and Royal Glass Co. Bill was an avid reader, and enjoyed golf and watching westerns and the news, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and granddaughters who he loved dearly.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Lori Ann Short and husband, David of Bridgeport, W.Va. and Vicki Michele Woodward-Smith of New Market; two grandchildren, Ashton Nicole Short and Jade Madison Smith; a sister, Barbara Walton and husband, David of Bridgeport, W.Va. and a brother, Keith Woodward and wife, Patsy of Hanover, Pa. Mr. Woodward was preceded in death by a grandmother, Anna Gabbert Woodward and a nephew, Kevin David Walton.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
A memorial service and interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his wife, Frances to help with expenses.
Mrs. Louise Patterson Dean
Louise Patterson (Pat) Coulehan Dean, 97, died Dec. 12, 2008, in the Record Street Home in Frederick. Mrs. Dean had been a resident of the Record Street Home since 2001. Born April 7, 1911, in Connellsville, Pa., she was the only child of the late Matthew McKinstry Patterson and Nell Donnelly Patterson.
Mrs. Dean graduated from Connellsville High School, Class of 1928, and Hood College, Class of 1932. She was active in college affairs and served as class president her last three years. She was appointed by her class to serve in this position following graduation. She remained devoted to Hood College throughout her life.
In 1933, she married
Edward Walsh Coulehan in Cumberland. Mr. Coulehan died in 1934. Her two children from the marriage are Eleanor 'Susie' Carroll Coulehan Donovan of Catonsville, and Louise 'Sissy' Patterson Coulehan Madden of Mercer Island, Wash.
In 1942, she married
Hugh Albert Dean of Frederick. Mr. Dean died in 1971. Her two children born of this marriage are Jane Reynolds Dean McClellan (Mrs. James R.) of Frederick, and William Albert Dean (Kitty Dickenson) of Ellicott City.
Mrs. Dean served as home service secretary for the Allegheny County Red Cross from 1936 to 1948 in Cumberland.
In the mid 1950s, Mrs. Dean worked for WFMD radio station in Frederick and had her own show called 'Listen Ladies.' Mrs. Dean served as executive director of the Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1959 to 1978 in Frederick. She received many acknowledgments from the National Red Cross for her work with servicemen, veterans and for the blood program organization. The Department of the Army issued a Patriotic Civilian citation at the time of her retirement.
She was a member of St. John's Evangelist Catholic Church and served as a regent of the Catholic Daughters.
Mrs. Dean was an avid bridge player, who enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, watching sports, and mostly being with her family, especially the annual summer trip to the beach at Ocean City. She had a quick wit and an amazing sense of humor.
In addition to her four children, she is survived by the following 14 grandchildren, Susan Marie Valderas (Mark), of Catonsville, Ray Donovan (Dawn) of Bogart, Ga., Kate Srour (Greg), Tim Donovan, Jane Griffith (Vince) and Dan Donovan (Sheila), all of Catonsville, Meghann Harjer (Brandon), of Fernley, Nev., Marr Paul Madden (Karen), of Bellevue, Wash., Megan Jane March (Clay), of Mercer Island, Wash., Robert Dean McClellan (Lisa), of Clifton, Va., Brian Sean McClellan (Robie Lynn), of Jupiter, Fla., Andrew Patterson McClellan (fianc? Laura Paris), of Washington, Katie Diane Dean, of Miami, Fla., and Stephanie Dean, of Ellicott City.
She is also survived by the following 21 great-grandchildren, Alex, Brendan and Spencer Madden, Hayley and Taylor March, Jackie, Maria and Michael Valderas, Rachel, Sheila and Ray Donovan, Matt, Anna and Jenny Srour, Adam Donovan, Quinn, Charlotte and Ian Griffith, Joe and Margaret Donovan, James Timothy, Tristan and Corbin, and Quinn Audrey McClellan. Mrs. Dean was predeceased by a grandson, Matt Donovan.
A memorial mass will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 17, at St. John's Catholic Church, Frederick.

Mrs. Thelma Michael
Thelma Marie Michael, 82, of Emmitsburg, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at her home following an extended illness.
Born March 1, 1926, in Stanley, Va., she was the daughter of the late Scott D. and Irene M. (Jenkins) Harris. She was the wife of the late Harvey Edward Michael who predeceased her Aug. 11, 2000.
She was employed as a clerk for 34 years by the Daughter's of Charity Religious Community at St. Joseph's Provincial House in Emmitsburg. She was a member of St. Anthony's Shrine Parish in Emmitsburg. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are daughters, Doris M. Cornett of Hagerstown, Connie L. Furhman and husband, Ronald, of Hanover, Pa., and Barbara J. Little of Emmitsburg; siblings, James Harris of Rocky Ridge, Wilson Harris of Nanticoke, Glen Harris of Frederick, Wanda May of Timberville, Va., and Martha Cooley of Frederick. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by siblings, Homer and Kent Harris, Florabell Nusbaum, and Iva Mae Koontz.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at St. Anthony's Shrine Catholic Church, 16150 St. Anthony Road, Emmitsburg. Interment will follow in the St. Anthony's Catholic cemetery in Emmitsburg.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg. A Christian wake will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Helen Ann Owens
Mrs. Helen Ann Kidwell Owens, 73, of Germantown, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Williams Richard Owens Sr., who preceded her in death on May 14, 2007.
Born Jan. 11, 1935, in Fairfax, Va., she was a daughter of the late Ernest Augustus and Dolly Rosalie Costello Kidwell. She graduated from Gaithersburg High School, Class of 1954, and was a lifetime member of Boyds Presbyterian Church.
It was a strong wish that with her death, would come the reunification of her family.
Surviving are three children, Beverly Owens Heflin and husband, Robert E. Sr., of Damascus, Wanda J. Bowens and husband, Thomas C., of Ijamsville, and Larry L. Owens and fianc?e, Tina Marie James, both of Damascus; grandchildren, Robert E. "Bobby" Heflin Jr., of Damascus, Whitney Ann Bowens, of Ijamsville, William Brody Heflin, of Damascus, and Taylor Ann Bowens, of Ijamsville; siblings, Thelma Hungerford, of Maryland's Eastern Shore, James Kidwell ,of Knoxville, Ernest Kidwell of Boonsboro, Flora Kidwell Testerman, of Frederick, and Vernon Kidwell, of Ijamsville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by two children, William R. "Willie" Owens, who died Aug. 4, 1984, and a baby boy, who died shortly after birth; as well as siblings, Elmer, Virgil and Leonard "Dickie" Kidwell, and Margaret Clem.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Boyds Presbyterian Church, 19901 White Grounds Road, Boyds, MD 20841. The Rev. Merritt W. Ednie will officiate.
Interment will be in the churchyard.

Mr. Charles Gearinger
Mr. Charles Edward "Stick" Gearinger, 72, of Frederick, died Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Mary Ann Brush Gearinger, his wife of 48 years.
Born April 8, 1936 in Frederick, he was the son of the late Raymond and Florene Gearinger Kline.
He was a member of Centennial Memorial United Methodist Church.
Charlie spent most of his adult life in service to the public. He served as a volunteer with Hospice, and volunteered at Waverly Elementary School, working with the children, and telling stories. He completed a two-year Bible course with Liberty University and was ordained as an independent Christian Clergy with World Christianship Ministries.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Air Force.
Charlie, as Jeremiah Trees, dressed as a mountainman and would travel far and wide telling stories of his adventures, and retelling of Indian Legends, in schools, Scout Troops, and Pow Wows. As Jeremiah, he also had a Sunday morning radio show for a couple of years in the 1990's on WFMD.
Charlie was extremely proud that Jeremiah Trees was made an honorary member of the Lumbee Indian Tribe, based in Robeson County, N.C. He received this award because of his work on behalf of the Lumbees and Indians in general.
Even in his death, Charlie continued to give of himself, as he had requested his body was donated to Living Legacy. Mr. Gearinger was the last of his immediate family.
Surviving besides his wife at home are two children, David Scott Gearinger and wife Sedija of Arkansas and Autumn Beth Stitely and husband Todd of Boonsboro; five grandchildren, Danny Stitely, Rachael Stitely, Nicholas Gearinger, Holly Gearinger, and Elvisa Dedich; he is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Centennial Memorial United Methodist Church, 8 W. Second St., Frederick. His pastor, Rev. George Earle Jr., will officiate.
As per Charlie and his family's request, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Centennial Memorial UMC, 8 W. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701 or to the Waverley Elementary School, 201 Waverley Drive, Frederick, MD 21702.
Mr. Benjamin Black
Mr. Benjamin "Ben" Hoffman Black, 69, of Cascade, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the Waynesboro Hospital in Waynesboro, Pa. He was the husband of 42 years to Norma Irene Moreland Black.
Born in Prince Georges County on March 28, 1939, he was the son of the late Mary (Hoffman) and John Black. He was a former quality assurance manager with Marsh McBirney in Gaithersburg and also in Frederick for a number of years. Ben had also worked with the Frederick County School System, but most recently he was with SAIC at Fort Detrick where he received his 10-year certificate.
Ben served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, where he obtained an interest in airplanes and flying. He was a faithful founding member of Living Word Ministries in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting coins and knives.
The most important aspect of his life was his family. He was devoted to his wife, his children and his grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all of them. His giving heart was his greatest attribute.
In addition to his wife Norma, Ben is survived by his children, Cheryl Hooper and husband George of Blue Ridge Summit, Richard Black and wife Lisa from Smithsburg, Jennifer Beck and husband Eric of Fairfield, Sarah Miller and husband Jeff of Waynesboro, and Maria Black of Charleston, Maine; his son-in-law, Michael Beans of Smithsburg; his loving grandchildren, Rachal, Angela, Megan, Alisha, Kristen, Joshua, Gabriel, Elijah, Joel, and Nathan; his siblings, Sarah Ann Black, John Jeremiah Black, Harry Bradfield Black, David George Black, Mary Margaret Black and William Lloyd Black.
Ben was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Susan Irene Beans, Aug. 28, 2008. He will also be faithfully missed by his dog, "Pooh Bear."
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Evangelical Bible Church, 14698 Albert Staub Road, Thurmont, MD 21788. Rev. Warren Rice, Rev. Frank Turner and Rev. Virginia Saavedra will officiate. Interment will be private.

Mr. Hugh McGovern Sr.
Mr. Hugh A. McGovern Sr., 71, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville. He was the husband for 42 years to Olive V. Beadling McGovern.
Born in Palmyra, N.J. on Feb. 25, 1937 he was the son of the late Mary C. (Bradley) and Joseph H. McGovern Sr. Hugh served in the United States Marine Corps during the Cuban Missel Crisis and into the Vietnam War. He was a powder processor for Trans-Tech.
Hugh was a lifetime member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Department. His hobbies included collecting milk bottles and he was an avid golfer.
Besides his wife survivors include his son, Hugh A. McGovern Jr. and wife Frances A. of Andrews Air Force Base; his two loving grandchildren, Keelin F. and Ewen J. McGovern; two sisters, Mary C. Paull of Sarasota, Fla. and Margaret M. McCay and husband Ronald of Osteen, Fla.; three brothers, Joseph McGovern Jr. of Osteen, Fla., Msgn. James McGovern of Sarasota, Fla. and William J. McGovern and wife Donna of Cobleskill, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by his special fiend Randy "Judge" Smith of Libertytown, and all his friends at Trans-Tech in Adamstown.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville. His brother, Monsignor James McGovern will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Glade cemetery.

Mrs. Aline Margaret Scott
Mrs. Aline Margaret Scott, 95, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at The Willows, Homewood at Crumland Farms, from complications of pneumonia. Aline was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Sugar Creek, Ohio, and was a graduate of the Aultman School of Nursing, Canton, Ohio, class of 1934. After a career in industrial nursing, she served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky.
She was the beloved wife of the late retired Maj. Adrian Scott, and daughter of the late Charles Walters and Mary Renner, Canton, Ohio.
She is survived by her daughters, Sue Scott Nisenfeld and husband, Frank, of Frederick and Ann Scott Coakley and husband, Robert, of Springfield, Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer Nisenfeld and husband, Antonio Guerrero, Scott A. Nisenfeld, all of Frederick, Robert A. Coakley and wife, Eneli of Alexandria, Va., and Edward S. Coakley, of Springfield, Va.; and a great-grandson.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jeannette Scott Day and nephew, C. Lance Nealy.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, John C. Scott; grandson, Andrew D. Nisenfeld and brother, Delmar Walters.
The funeral and burial will be at Arlington National cemetery at a future date.

Mr. James Downes
Mr. James O. "Puggie" Downes, 74, of West Virginia, formerly of Rockville and Cabin John, lost his battle with brain cancer on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at his daughter's home in Rockville. He was surrounded by his family as he peacefully left this earth to be with God in heaven.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Janet Mills Downes; daughters, Gale Riner and husband, Larry of Hedgesville, WVa., and Judy Butts and husband, Glenn of Rockville. J.O. leaves one grandson, who he loved dearly, J.C. Butts and wife, Kyla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Thomas Downes Sr., his brother Thomas Downes Jr., and his sister, Catherine Downes.
J.O. was a Volunteer Fireman with the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department for nine years and the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years. He was recently honored with the presentation of a plaque commemorating his 50 years of service to RVFD. He worked as a route salesman for Coca-Cola for many years.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at the Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville. A fire department memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, during the evening visitation at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Barber Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at the Darnestown Presbyterian Church cemetery, 15120 Turkey Foot Road, Darnestown.
