March 23, 2001

On March 23, 2001 Sandy MacGlashan of Church Hill Md. died at the Memorial Hospital in Easton Md. He was 74 years old.

Mr. MacGlashan was born in West Palm Beach, Fla. on July 3, 1926. The son of Archibald Alexander MacGlashan, Jr. and Georgia Marie Teeple MacGlashan, he graduated from Kent School in Kent Connecticut; class of 1945. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he later attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Mr. MacGlashan joined his father in farming on Plain Dealing in Talbot Co. where he married Elizabeth Jeanne Kirby of St. Michaels, Md.

Mr. MacGlashan and his father then purchased Parson Green Farm in Church Hill, engaging in a dairy and grain partnership. In the early 1960’s he purchased Kings Town Tractor near Chestertown Md, retiring in 1998 after 38 years in business. During this time he served the Queen Anne’s Zoning Board of Appeals for 26 years, Member of the Church Hill Vol. Fire Co., Queen Anne's County Library Board, Church Hill Lions Club; Past President, Sudlersville Skeet Club, Queen Anne's County Airport Advisory Board, Queen Anne's County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital Board of Trustee's; serving as President, Queen Anne's County Magistrate Court Justice of the Peace, and was elected in 1990 as a Queen Anne's County Commissioner.

He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church serving as Vestryman, Senior Warden, and was appointed as the Bishop's Warden when the Church was absent a rector. He was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed flying J-3 Cubs and other aircraft from his farm. He was a licensed real estate broker.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Kirby MacGlashan, his son Scott MacGlashan, and wife Carolyn, of Church Hill, two daughters, Dr. Susan M. Fieldman, of Oakton, Va. and her husband Russell A. & Margaret (Molly) M. Tobin and husband William R. III of Church Hill, & a brother Donald W. MacGlashan of Chevy Chase. Ten grandchildren, Steven G., David H., Marcus S. MacGlashan, D. Alexander & Ryan A. Fieldman, William R. IV, Anna S., Parker M., James A., & Elizabeth R. Tobin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2001 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Church Hill, Maryland at 11:00 A.M. The Reverend's William P. Chilton and David F. Gearhart will officiate.

March 21, 2001

Joseph Thomas Bugaj of Chestertown, Maryland died on March 21, 2001 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home. He was 80.

Born in New York on November 30, 1920, he was the son of the late William and Felicia Wielichowski Bugaj. Mr. Bugaj was a 1939 graduate from Roslyn High School in Roslyn, NY and a 1941 graduate from New York Agricultural College with an associates degree. On November 13, 1943 he married Helen Mosior.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He served from 1942 until 1946 when he was honorably discharged. Upon his return, he worked for G.L.F., which later became Agway, as an area sales manager for 45 years retiring in the 1980's. He and his wife lived for several years in Pennsylvaina before moving to Chestertown, Md. in 1973.

Mr. Bugaj was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chestertown, Md., Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36 in Chestertown, Md. and was past Exaulted Ruler and secretary of the Honesdale Pennsylvaina Elks Lodge. He enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling, and was an avid historian.

In addition to his wife of 58 years he is survived by 4 sons: Stephen J. Bugaj of State College, PA, Ronald M. Bugaj of Honesdale, PA, Joseph Bugaj, Jr. of St. Charles Missouri, and William C. Bugaj of Crumpton, Md. 2 brothers: Theodore Bugaj of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Henry Bugaj of Floral Park, NY; 5 sisters: Antoinette Kokernak of Queens Village, NY, Jane Brown of Merien, Ohio, Helen Hillard of Louisville, KY, Sophie Caprariello of Princeton, NJ, and Lottie Nartowicz of Westbury, NY. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday March 26, 2001 at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday March 25, 2001 between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 and from 6:00 to 8:00 at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Interment will be held in St. John's Church cemetery in Rock Hall, Md.

Esther E. Dorsey of Easton, MD formerly of Catonsville and Howard County died on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at William Hill Manor. She was 97.

Born June 29, 1903 in Secretary, MD, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Elsie McMahan Sard. Following graduation from East New Market High School, she attended Salisbury State University where she graduated in 1929. She then taught in public and private schools in Howard County. In 1994 she moved to William Hill Manor in Easton, MD. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Elkridge, MD. Her husband, William Painter Dorsey, died August 3, 1979.

Mrs. Dorsey is survived by a sister, Sylvia Kemp Sard of Easton, MD; three nieces, Sylvia L. Hackett of Queenstown, MD, Ann Dorsey Allison of Churchville, MD and Gisela Dorsey of Columbia, MD; one great-niece, Elise Allison of Bradenton, Fl. She was predeceased by a sister, Hazel V. Hackett, who died July 23, 2000 and a nephew, Hammond B. Dorsey. Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 26, 2001 at 2 PM at St. John's cemetery, Ellicott City, MD.

Maynard Max Milleman of Preston died at Memorial Hospital Easton, on Wednesday, March 21, 2001. He was 81.

Born in Preston on February 25, 1920 he was the son of the late John and Henrietta Thieroff Milleman. After attending public school in Caroline County, he joined the U.S. Army where he served in both WWII and Korea. Following his release from active duty he completed a mechanic's course and later started his own excavating and bulldozing business where he worked until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Preston, where he served as a member of the Church Council, the Senior Choir and as an usher. He was also a member of the E.E. Streets post 5118 V.F.W. Easton. For many years he was associated with the area steam shows.

Mr. Milleman is survived by his wife the former Irene Faulkner, two daughters; Judy North and her husband Charles of Bowie, MD., Doris Welborn and her husband Fred of Virginia Beach, VA. one son; Stanley Johnson of Easton, 2 grandsons; Richard L. Jones Jr. and Kenny Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Preston, on Monday March 26th at 11:00AM. Friends may call on Sunday March 25th at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home P.A., Easton from 2 to 4 PM and at the Church on Monday, one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Junior Order cemetery, Preston.

March 20, 2001

Earl S. Richardson of Stevensville died at Calvert Memorial Hospital on March 20, 2001. He was 86.

Born in New Hampshire on April 9, 1914, he was the son of the late Earl E. and Janette Smith Richardson. He was raised in New Hampshire and later Florida. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a private during W.W.II. After being honorably discharged in 1945, he returned to civilian life and worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington D.C, working at the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. Mr. Richardson moved to the Eastern Shore after retiring. On December 5, 1942, he married Eva May Richardson (that was her maiden name). She predeceased him on February 18, 2000. He was a member of Kent Island United Methodist Church, Chester.

Mr. Richardson is survived by a son, Edwin James Richardson of Owings; and five grandchildren. two sisters, Madeline Lacass and Irene Richardson predeceased him. Services will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chester. Family and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Stevensville cemetery, Stevensville.

Louise Roe Smethurst, 92, died at the home of her daughter, Sarah B. Sadler, in Oxford, MD, in the early evening of March 20, 2001.

The former Washington, D. C., resident moved to the Easton, MD, area in 1992. She was born in Spring Hill, AL, the daughter of the late James Knox Roe and Jessie May Blair. Her husband, Raymond S. Smethurst, died in April 1974. She attended the Barton Academy in Mobile, AL, but, after moving with her family to Washington, D. C., graduated from Central High School there in June, 1928. Graduating first in her class, she received her L.L.B. degree from National (now George Washington) University Law School in March, 1934.

A woman with firm Christian beliefs and a long-time member of Metropolitan Memorial Methodist Church in Washington, she had a broad range of professional and civic interests and was known for her indomitable "let's get it done" spirit. Although she curtailed her nascent legal career upon the birth of the first of her four children, Mrs. Smethurst became and remained very active in volunteer work. She served the Florence Crittendon Home, served as Secretary and legal counsel for the Washington Aid Association for the Blind and prior to moving to Easton she also served as a volunteer at Iona House. During World War II she served as a volunteer in the American Red Cross.

In the early 1960's with her youngest child in school, Mrs. Smethurst resumed her law practice, primarily handling domestic relations and zoning matters. Mrs. Smethurst also enjoyed traveling and gardening at the family's summer home near Rehoboth Beach, DE.

She is survived by her four children, Raymond S. Smethurst, Jr. of Salisbury, MD, Sara B. Sadler of Oxford, MD, Robert G. Smethurst of Woodberry Forest, VA, and Susan O. Smethurst of Hamilton, Ontario, ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and her sister, Mary Helen Roe, of Easton, MD. Her other sister, the late Bernie B. Roe, died in February, 1997.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 200 S. Harrison Street in Easton on Saturday, March 24th, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. W. Daniel Rich, the pastor of the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Salisbury, a former Washington, D. C., neighbor, officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. A private interment in the family plot will follow at the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church near Rehoboth Beach, DE.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Evergreen Cove Holistic Learning Center, Inc., P. O. Box 744, Easton, MD 21601.

Margret A. "Peg" Ward of Easton, MD, formerly of Baltimore, died on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 70.

Born March 12, 1931, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Walter G. and Mary Baker Cooper. She attended public school in Baltimore and on December 17, 1950 she married Walter "Moose" Ward. In 1982 she and her husband moved to Easton. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church where she formerly sang in the choir. In her spare time she enjoyed singing and performing plays and skits throughout our community.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Ward is survived by two children, Brenda Coyne of Catonsville, MD and W. Lee Ward of Dayton, VA; a brother, Warren Cooper of Catonsville, MD; and four grandchildren, Andrew Bounds, Adam Coyne, Brooks Ward and Sarah Ward.

Funeral services will be held at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Friday, March 23, 2001 at 11 AM. Friends may call on Thursday, March 22 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans cemetery Eastern Shore, Hurlock, MD.

Samuel Merritt Willis of near Kennedyville, Md. died Tuesday March 20th. 2001 in the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chestertown, MD. of heart failure. He was 79.

Mr. Willis was born in Kent Co. Maryland the son of the late Samuel Merritt and Clara L. Walbert Willis. Mr. Willis farmed for many years . Mr. Willis was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII serving in Pearl Harbor. He was one of 3 founding members of the V.F.W. Post 652 in Millington, Md. He and Sam Roland and William Payne worked diligently in forming the new Post through the National Headquarters. In 1993-94 Mr. Willis was appointed National Aid de-Camp by National Commander George R. Cramer for Mr. Willis’s continued support and work for the V.F.W. Locally Mr. Willis served as Post Commander several times and held many high honors within the state of Maryland and Delaware. He also served as the Post’s Quartermaster for many years.Mr. Willis loved nature and the outdoors and enjoyed watching plants grow and the colors of each season.

Mr. Willis is survived by his wife of 61 yrs. Thelma Willis, 1- daughter, Wiladeen Willis of Kennedyville, Md. and 1- son Leo Wayne Willis and his wife Rose of Pleasanton, Ca. 1- Sister, Grace Phillips of Virginia Beach, Va. And 1- Brother Harry Willis of Bethany Beach, DE. 4- Grandchildren Burton Willis, Jae J. Duffy, Wanda Lynn Clough and Jeanette Renee Ames, and 5- Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday March 23rd. 2001 at 2pm from the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, MD. Where friends and family may call after 1pm. Interment will be private in the Eastern Shore Veterans cemetery, Hurlock, MD.
