Mr. Luther Horine Jr.

Luther E. Horine Jr., 68, of Walkersville, died after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008. He was at home, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Patricia (Krzysko) Horine.

Born Jan. 16, 1940 in Frederick, he was the son of the late Luther and Louise (Saylor) Horine.

Mr. Horine was a life member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Department and served in the Maryland National Guard. He was also a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Walkersville. He enjoyed farming and raising beef cattle as a hobby.

Luther was a graduate of Walkersville High School and continued his education at Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1963 with a major in forestry. He was employed by the Frederick County Health Department in the Environmental Health division and retired after 35 years of service. He was also co-owner of the family business, T.R. Saylor Hardware Store in Walkersville.

Luther will always be remembered for his greatest passion -- fireworks. He began his pyrotechnic career while working with his father for Zambelli Fireworks Internationale and remained with the company for 54 years. His spectacular fireworks displays have entertained many throughout the years.

Over the years, Luther took great pride in his Fourth of July and New Year's Eve pyrotechnic shows in Baltimore's Inner Harbor and showed that same pride in providing smaller shows such as the Walkersville Volunteer Fireman's Carnival.

Luther has received various awards including most recently the 2008 Associate of the Year award by the Maryland Association of Agricultural Fairs and Shows, Inc. And a certificate of recognition from the City of Baltimore by Mayor Sheila Dixon.

Surviving besides his spouse are three children, Gretchen Horine Smith and husband Brian of Thurmont, Luke Horine of Frederick, and Heidi Horine of Frederick; two granddaughters, Samantha and Mackenzie Smith; and one sister, Lois Poffenbarger of Thurmont; two cousins, Anne (Lovell) Sebastyan of Illinois, and John Lovell of Jefferson; three nephews, William Poffenbarger Jr. of Middletown, Neel Poffenbarger of Myersville, and Matthew Poffenbarger of Lewistown.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick and at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 19 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville. Rev. Mark L. Foucart will officiate.

Interment will follow in Glade cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Luther E. Horine Jr.'s name to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 19 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville, MD 21793.

Mrs. Lenore Humberson

Lenore E. Humberson, 92, of Frederick, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 3, 1916 in Wolfsville, and was the daughter of the late Jasper W. and Mae R. Grossnickle Morgan.

Lenore was married to the late George B. Humberson, who preceded her in death in 1964.

Lenore was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick; The THEO'S of Feageville, The Retired Teachers Association of Frederick County and the DAR of Frederick. She was an alumni of Frostburg University and the University of Maryland.

Her teaching career was concentrated in the elementary grades at North Market Street and Elm Street schools in Frederick and she retired in 1976 after 34 years of teaching.

She is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Schrodel and her husband, Jack, Martha H. Clingan and Mary H. Martin and her husband, Robert, all of Frederick; eight grandchildren, Chuck and David Schrodel of Plano, Texas, Beth Perry of Monte Sereno, Calif., Richard Clingan Jr. of Frederick, Rebecca E. Nanavati of Millersville, Daniel R. Martin of Frederick, Jennifer M. Hickman, and husband, Geoffrey, of Charlotte, N.C. and Deborah A. Martin of Falling Waters, W.Va.; and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Charles Morgan of New Freedom, Pa., and James Donald Morgan and wife Sue of Hagerstown and one sister-in-law, Garnetta Morgan of Frederick.

Preceding her in death was her brother, Paul Morgan.

Funeral services will began at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wolfsville. Pastor David Oravec and Pastor David Howell will officiate.

Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Ricketts Funeral Home, Myersville, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Mark's, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701 or St. Mark's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 13, Myersville, MD 21773.

Mr. David Wise

David Calvin Wise, 93, of Frederick, passed peacefully on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Glade Valley Nursing Home, Walkersville, with family by his side. Born April 2, 1915, he was the son of the late George A. Wise and Edith Kate Long Wise. He was married to the late Alice Gertrude Zepp Wise on June 21, 1958; they were married for 41 years.

Mr. Wise moved houses in Middletown early in his working career. He then began a career at Price Electric and then worked at Aerojet as a machinist, the company from which he retired.

After his retirement, Mr. Wise taught himself to play the organ — which he did for many hours a day, as he truly enjoyed making wonderful music.

Mr. Wise was an accomplished archer and received numerous awards; they took up an entire room. He belonged to a number of archery clubs, including the Tuscarora Archers Association and was a lifetime member of the National Archery Association. He also belonged to the Cold Deer Hunting and Fishing Club and the Woodsboro Night Owls.

He was a instructor in a hunter's safety course, serving both the State of Maryland and the U.S. Division of Natural Resources. He was an avid fisherman and would take many fishing trips to the bay.

Mr. Wise was the type of person to also help others whether it was taking them to the store or mowing their grass. He loved being outdoors whether it was playing sports as a young child or hunting and/or fishing in his later years. He was a huge fan of the Redskins and Orioles and will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, William L. Zepp; grandchildren, Steve Zepp and his wife, Diane, Richard Zepp and his wife, Pauline and David Zepp and his wife, Ruthie; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Zepp, Bill Timmons Jr., Jamal Johnson, Hunter Zepp, Wendy Reeves, Misty Rich; four great-great-grandsons and one great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by three nieces and nephews. Mr. Wise also leaves behind special friends, Jo Ann Dickinson, Hazel Miller and Rich Fry. He was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Zepp; great-grandson, Randy Zepp; and 13 brothers and sisters.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home.

Interment will be at Mount Olivet cemetery.

Mrs. Virginia Nicholson

Mrs. Virginia Elizabeth Nicholson, formerly of Brunswick, died peacefully of pneumonia on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, in Winter Park, Fla. She was 96 years old.

She was born in Frederick County on Sept. 17, 1912, to the late Louis Elmer Frye and Annie G. Snoots. She was the wife of James Edward Nicholson, who died in 1974. She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1930 and attended Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Nicholson was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick.

For many years, she and her husband owned and operated Nicholson's Service Center in Petersville. Later they moved to Feagaville. She and her husband belonged to the Brunswick Moose Lodge, active with the Brunswick Fire Hall, belonged to the Woodsboro Dance Club and attended many dances. They were known as the "old smoothies."

Mrs. Nicholson lived with her daughter in Florida for several years and enjoyed going to dances where her daughter sang and her husband were members of an 18- piece big band, just as they were when they lived in Frederick. After a stroke, she went to live at Village Oaks of Tuscawilla, an assisted living facility in Winter Springs, Fla. She remained active there, while participating in many activities. Her sense of humor often kept the residents and staff laughing and they fondly nicknamed her "peanut."

Mrs. Nicholson was very active with the Women of the Moose, Chapter 347 in Frederick where she served as musician. Moving to Florida, she became active with the Women of the Moose, Chapter 1404, in Sanford, Fla. where she also served as musician. Later in life, she had a very dear friend, Louis Wynkoop, who was also active with the Moose Lodge in Sanford. He passed away in 1998.--

Mrs. Nicholson is survived by her daughter, Connie Twigg Silliman and son-in-law, Dr. Thomas E. Silliman Sr.; grandson, Troy E. Twigg and wife, Jill; great-grandchildren, Olivia Elizabeth Twigg and Adam Joseph Twigg, all of Florida; niece, Bonnie Spann and husband, Jim, and children Kendra and Corey of Palm Harbor, Fla.

Also surviving is ex-son-in-law, Charles Ronald Twigg of Gaithersburg, fondly remembered by Mrs. Nicholson. Dr. Silliman's children, considered as her extended family, are Dr. Thomas Silliman Jr. and his wife, Becky, and children Jeremy, Shannon, Justin of Florida; Barry Silliman and wife, Nancy, and children Stephanie and Jesse of Walkersville; Gregory Silliman of Seven Fields, Pa.; and Gail N. Snyder and husband, Brian, and son Jeremy Carl of Dublin, Ga. Mrs. Nicholson was preceded in death by her brother, Leslie Frye of Knoxville in 1985.--

The viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, with the funeral immediately following at 11 a.m. at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Rev. Tom Claggett will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mr. Ira Burdette Jr.

Mr. Ira Layton "Sonny" Burdette Jr., 63, of Keymar, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at his home after an extended illness. Born July 25, 1945, in Sandy Springs, he was the son of Mildred Gue Burdette Crawford of Bishopville and the late Ira L. Burdette Sr. He was the husband of Elizabeth Darr Burdette, his wife of 43 years.

Mr. Burdette was a 1963 graduate of Mount Airy High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1969. He was formerly employed with S. Lease Warner and was the owner/operator of Sonny's Service Co. of New Windsor. He then was employed by Honeywell in Owings Mills and Johnson Control in Baltimore. He retired in 2007 from R.J.H. Inc. of Beltsville as a field representative for commercial heating and air conditioning. He was a member of the Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Co., Maryland Two-Cylinder Club, Mason-Dixon Historical Society, Howard County Antique Farm Machinery Club, and the Maryland Draft Horse and Mule Association. He was an organizer of the Carroll County Fire Police, life member of V.F.W. Post 8806 of Union Bridge, and a past master of the Linganore Grange. He enjoyed his dog, Hoouch, his John Deere tractors, working his mules and being there for others.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, Kimberly K. Conrad and husband, James of Fayetteville, Pa., and Brenda L. Burdette of Keymar; three grandchildren, Sarah E. Brown, John R. Brown Jr. and Angela J. Brown, all of Fayetteville, Pa.; a great-granddaughter, Alexia E. Franco; two sisters, Ann Cox and husband, Dan of Silver Run, and Joyce Mayne and husband, Jeff of Bishopville; a brother, Kevin E. Burdette and wife, Nancy of Milton, Del.; and sister-in-law, Sally Burdette of Ijamsville. He was predeceased by a brother, David L. Burdette.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Union Bridge Firemen's Building, Whyte and Locust Streets, with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart of Keysville Lutheran Church officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 1050, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Mr. Joseph Hofer Jr.

Mr. Joseph Junior Hofer Jr., 80, of Thurmont, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Sophia Welgan Hofer, whom he married May 17, 1954.

Born Aug. 6, 1928, in Freeman, S.D., he was a son of the late George G. and Mary Kleinsasser Hofer.

Mr. Hofer was a U.S. Navy Petty Officer, retiring after 22 years. He was a contractor with Page Communications in Vietnam. He was a foreman with East Alco, retiring after 18 years and employed at Catoctin Laboratories since 1986. He was a member of the American Legion in Woodsboro and a life member of the VFW in Bath N.Y.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Holly J. Tressler and husband, Terry of Thurmont, and Kelly B. Nowalk and husband, John of Frederick; sister, Connie M. Hofer of Baltimore; three grandchildren, Seth Smart of Canton N.Y., David and Cory Nowalk, both of Frederick; and two step-grandchildren, Tiffany and Cody Tressler, both of Thurmont. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Holgerson.

Mr. Hofer is at the Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at which time a memorial service will be held.

Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Hofer to the American Lung Association of Maryland, Executive Plaza I, Suite 600, 11350 McCormick Road, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.

Mrs. Helen Erwin

Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Erwin, 95, of Frederick, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, surrounded by her many loving friends at Somerford House Assisted Living, where she has made her home for the past two and a half years. She was the wife of the late Frank L. Erwin, who died in October 1990.

She was born in Virginia, on Oct. 19, 1913, a daughter of the late Isaac and Pearl Mae Bowbeer.

Mrs. Erwin, in her younger days, worked with her husband in a paper delivery business and after moving to Frederick, she and her husband started the Erwin and Shafer Beer Distributors of Frederick. She enjoyed entertaining, playing cards, crocheting, needle work and working in her flower garden and yard.

Surviving her is one son, Frank L. Erwin Jr., and wife, Betty, of Frederick; one grandson, Frank L. Erwin III, of Jefferson; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Bruce Shreve and wife, Sara, of Minnville, Ore.; and a special niece, Sandra Shorrow, of Virginia.

She will also be remembered by special friends, Grace Routzahn, Helen Biehl, Fern Mercer and her very special care givers, Sylvia Mercado, Juanita Gomez, Marta Patino and Ursula Mauro. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Private funeral services with interment will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Mrs. Lillian Miller

Mrs. Lillian Mae Miller, 75, of Frederick, died after a courageous battle with leukemia on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008. She was at home surrounded by her children.

Born July 16, 1933, in Pottsville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Caroline Miller. She is survived by two sisters, Frances Wagner and Alice DiCello; and one brother, Robert Miller Jr. She was blessed with two sons, Charles and Richard Miller; and two daughters, Jody Mangum and Caroline Johnson. She was also blessed with ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Lillian was a licensed practical nurse and retired in March 2006 after 25 years of service with National Lutheran Home of Rockville.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Frederick Memorial Hospital, Regional Cancer Therapy Center.

Infant Armany Williams

Infant Armany Renee Williams, six weeks, of Sabillasville, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Nov. 10, 2008, in Frederick, she was a daughter of Damien R. Williams and Tory Wantz both of Sabillasville.

Surviving besides her parents is halfsister, Taniyah Thomas; grandmother, Julie Wantz of Thurmont; grandfather, Tim Wantz and wife, Lois of Littlestown; great-grandmother, Deanna Shuff of Thurmont; great-grandfather, Curtis Shuff of Waynesboro; great-great-grandmother, Mildred Shire of Thurmont; and aunt, Stevi Wantz of Littlestown.

Armany is at the Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home. The Rev. Steve Burdette will officiate.

Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Armany to the family to help defray the funeral expenses.

Mrs. T. Marlene Springer

Mrs. T. Marlene Springer, 71, of Emmitsburg, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at her home.

Born Oct. 17, 1937, in Emmitsburg, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Maggie C. (King) Trent. She was predeceased by her former husband, Raymond Springer in 1980.

She was a member of Elias Lutheran Church in Emmitsburg. She graduated from Emmitsburg High School in 1955, and was a teacher's aid at Emmitsburg Elementary School in the late 1960s. Marlene co-organized the establishment of the Seton Day Care Center in Emmitsburg and worked there until 1981. She was a short-order cook at Summit Plaza Restaurant in Blue Ridge Summit from 1982 to 1986, and then worked at Martin's grocery/restaurant in Gettysburg, Pa., before retiring.

Surviving are six children and their spouses, Bob and Deb Springer of Fairfield, Pa., Jess and Lynda Springer of Emmitsburg, Karen and Gene Miller of Orrtanna, Pa., Lois and Bryon Short of Fairfield, Pa., Connie and Leroy Forsythe of Fairfield, Pa, and Linda and Arlis Sowers of Keedysville.

She was one of 20 siblings, survived by Leonard Trent of Hanover, Pa., Sarah Green of Emmitsburg, Fred Trent of Hanover, Pa., Judy Althoff of Hanover, Pa., Linda Lutz of York, Pa., and Brenda Shultz of Gettysburg, Pa.

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant son, Samuel Springer in 1961.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg. Inurnment will be at a later date in Emmitsburg Memorial cemetery in Emmitsburg. There will be no funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Heartley House, P.O. Box 857, Frederick, MD 21705.
